LG's Curved OLED TV Launches in the U.S. for $15k

lgcurvedoled

If you’ve been waiting patiently since CES to grab a first-of-its-kind HDTV, now’s your chance. During an event in Minnesota today, LG announced its 55-inch curved OLED would begin showing up in select U.S. Best Buy stores over the next several weeks. The $15,000 HDTV launched in Korea back in April, and LG executives feel the move gives the company an “early lead” on the OLED market in the United States. Moreover, Best Buy will also be the first major American retailer to carry OLED sets.

How DisplayPort multi-streaming delivers new levels of multi-monitor madness

When a vendor sends us a demo system, it typically take great care to ensure that we experience the system exactly as the maker intends us to. So when VESA, the trade group responsible for the DisplayPort standard, said that it was sending PCWorld a multiple-monitor demo system similar to the one it exhibited at CES in January, I expected it to arrive bundled with a detailed guide and all the software needed to present DisplayPort in its best light.

Imagine my surprise when an MSI GX60 gaming laptop, two 24-inch Dell U2413 displays, and a 21.5-inch HP Elite L2201x showed up in the PCWorld Labs without so much as a user manual for any of the four devices. “Wow,” I thought. “They must be pretty confident that setting all this up will be self-evident.”

Robert Cardin
The Mini DisplayPort connector is located on the MSI GX60’s rear panel, between the VGA and HDMI ports.

As things turned out, setup was pretty much self-evident. The GX60 has HDMI and VGA video outputs, but obviously I was more interested in its Mini DisplayPort. Both of the Dell monitors have full complements of digital video inputs (HDMI, DVI, and full-size DisplayPort, along with ports labeled ‘DisplayPort In’ and ‘DisplayPort Out’), but the HP display has only a DisplayPort input.

I connected the full-size DisplayPort on the first Dell to the notebook, plugged a second cable to that monitor’s DisplayPort Out, and connected that to the other Dell’s DisplayPort In. Then I attached a third cable to the second Dell’s DisplayPort Out and plugged it into the HP display to complete the chain.

Mind-controlled helicopter takes some serious brain power

Puzzlebox Productions and its mind-controlled helicopter are easy to spot at tech events like this week’s Robot Block Party at Stanford University. After all, the company’s Puzzlebox Orbit is the device that’s whirling above everybody’s heads—provided the person controlling it is concentrating hard enough.

The Puzzlebox Orbit and the app that helps control it.

The Orbit pairs up with a NeuroSky EEG Mindwear mobile headset which communicates with a mobile app. The headset communicates brain activity to that app loaded onto a phone. Give your brain a challenge and your brain activity goes up, eventually triggering the helicopter, which is linked to the phone through infrared.

(If this sounds familiar, Puzzlebox has demoed the Orbit at shows like the CES 2013 event in Las Vegas this past January.)

A Mature Android Smartphone – The Sony Xperia Z Review

By Ewan Spence, Contributor

Sony’s latest Android handset, announced at CES 2013 and reaching a number of markets during February this year, is an impressive continuation of Sony’s Android line of smartphones. While it is not the Android device to rule over all other Android devices, it shows a steady progression from Sony’s first Android handsets last year. The Japanese company know how to build up all the elements of a solid smartphone. While I might lack a spark that makes it special, it’s capable and dependable handset that I can recommend. …read more

T-Mobile's Legere on "Greedy Hedge Funds" Trying to Stop the MetroPCS Merger

By Dan Radovsky, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

T-Mobile USA CEO John Legere is trying to rebrand the nation’s No. 4 wireless carrier as the only one seeking not to pull the wool over unsuspecting customers’ eyes. By using some colorful language in his characterization of the other mobile operators’ pricing policies in January at the CES, Legere is branding himself as an unfiltered straight-shooter.

And Legere has continued along that path in his remarks yesterday regarding his company’s proposed merger with MetroPCS , a transaction that has seen some vocal and insistent opposition from unhappy shareholders.

The merger has already passed regulatory scrutiny from the Federal Communications Commission, the Department of Justice, and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, but still has to be approved by shareholders in a vote taken at a special meeting to be held on April 12.

Legere was asked about the merger’s prospects at yesterday’s T-Mobile event. The proceedings were focused on kicking off T-Mobile’s new LTE network, touting the iPhone, and announcing its new “Uncarrier” pricing policies.

“It will be approved,” Legere said of the merger, “despite the greedy hedge funds that are trying to take a double-dip out of that process.”

He was referring to Paulson & Co., controller of 9.9% of outstanding MetroPCS shares, and P. Schoenfeld Asset Management, or PSAM, controller of 2% of MetroPCS shares.

Paulson has already flatly said he will vote against the proposed deal as it is currently structured, and PSAM has filed a series of proxy statements with the Securities and Exchange Commission imploring other shareholders to vote the transaction down.

In addition, PSAM, has also called for the resignations of MetroPCS Chairman and CEO Roger Linquist, as well as director Kevin Landry, for “aggressively selling down their positions in PCS stock while simultaneously recommending the T-Mobile transaction to PCS stockholders.”

“I get what they are doing,” Legere said. “If you are an investor, and it’s before the vote, you are rattling your saber around to get more money.”

If this is just the beginning of John Legere‘s open-mouth policy, he may become the most interesting communications executive since… well, since DISH Network‘s Charlie Ergen.

Piloting a Hawken Mech with the Oculus Rift

The last time I saw the Oculus Rift, it was just hand-made prototype, wrapped in electrical tape and running Epic Citadel at CES 2013. But this week at GDC, Oculus is showing off the new Rift development kit — factory-made units with larger displays and other improvements to latency and performance. What’s more, they’re showing off the system with new games, including Hawken and Team Fortress 2.

While Epic Citadel was a demonstration of the Rift’s impact on environmental immersion, Hawken showcased how the VR headset could be used in combat. In my brief experience piloting a Hawken mech, the Oculus team emphasized how the Rift’s perspective control could allow users to visually identify when the weapons wielded by the machine’s arms were reloaded and ready to fire. To enhance the experience, the HUD was removed, but I can see how combining visual references and on-screen data could be combined for a more satisfying and realistic experience.

Samsung's 85-inch Ultra HD TV Available in March for $39,999

Sometimes, new tech is really expensive. After all, getting into a new line of hardware at the jump takes some serious commitment, not to mention cash. But in the case of Samsung’s new 85-inch “floating” Ultra HD TV, you could also buy a really nice Chevy Camaro for about the same price. According to Engadget, Samsung has marked the S9 UHD TV with a price tag of almost $40,000.

No, really, that’s how much it costs. Just sit and think about $40,000 dollars for a moment, and what it must feel like to spend that kind of money on a television. IGN checked out the 4K-resolution TV on its swivel easel at CES earlier this year, and yes, it’s very pretty.

Here’s What the 2014 Audi A3 Looks Like Under a Sheet, Plus a Glimpse of Its Back Seat

By Alexander Stoklosa

2014 Audi A3 sedan teaser

Today, Audi released the photo above and announced that the unspecified mystery car in it is an all-new ride. Given the absence of any scale-providing objects, it could be argued that literally any Audi sedan could be hiding under that sheet—admit it, they all look pretty similar—but it’s a pretty safe bet that this is a peek at the 2014 A3 sedan. After all, the A4 was just recently refreshed, a new A6 arrived for 2012, and the A8 isn’t due for an update for another year or two.

2014 Audi A3 sedan teaser

The A3 sedan and a two-door cabriolet are the only two A3 variants guaranteed to come to the U.S.; the three- and five-door hatchbacks likely will stay in Europe. As are the A3 hatches, the sedan is based on the Volkswagen Group’s new MQB modular front-drive architecture. Based on an A3 sedan test mule our spy photographers caught out in the wild, the production model largely will look like a scaled-down, stumpier A4. Audi also released a brief peek at the the aft quarters of the A3′s interior, which promises to be more luxe than what the brand previewed at CES last year (we expect the dashboard to mimic the hatchback’s)—all the better for going up against Mercedes-Benz’s new CLA250.

Audi says it will provide fans with a sneak peek at the 2014 A3 sedan on March 27, which happens to be the first day of the 2013 New York auto show. We’ll bring you more info as soon as it becomes available.

Panasonic’s New SMART VIERA HDTVs Voice Interaction Lets People Find TV Content, Search the Web, Get Access to Apps and More with the Power of Dragon

BURLINGTON, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Nuance Communications Inc. (NAS: NUAN) today announced that Panasonic’s new lineup of SMART VIERA® HDTVs announced at CES 2013 feature voice capabilities powered by Nuance’s Dragon TV. Now people can simply sit back and speak to find content, search the web, control volume and more – creating a more interactive and intelligent television experience. And with Dragon TV‘s text-to-speech, television content and options on the screen can be read aloud.

“Consumers need a simple way to navigate and search the overwhelming amount of TV content,” said Michael Thompson, executive vice president and general manager, Nuance Mobile. “Dragon TV enables Smart TV manufacturers like Panasonic to deliver a differentiated and compelling experience in one of the most intuitive ways people communicate – through voice.”

Will Google and Samsung End Up Frenemies?

By Doug Ehrman, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Depending on who you ask, the reason people love the Samsung Galaxy S4 is because it features the power of Google‘s Android OS; or the one factor holding Samsung back is the fact that it features an undifferentiated OS like Android. As the manufacturer of the single best selling line of Android devices, Samsung is positioning itself to have an increasingly persuasive voice with Google. This is even more notable when you consider that at the recent release party that Samsung threw for the Galaxy S4, Android was not mentioned.

Furthermore, Samsung is developing its own ecosystem that may position it to more directly compete with Google. This development becomes harder to overlook when you consider the steps Samsung is taking to bring its own OS — Tizen — to market with Intel chips. Ultimately, as good a partner as Samsung has been, these two are on a collision course to conflict.

Ecosystems are the new driving force
While there has always been an inexorable connection between software and hardware, Apple has created and executed the current paradigm for consumer electronics with its iOS ecosystem. Going back to the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show, CNET’s Matthew Moskovciak wrote:

The “ecosystem” concept started bubbling up last year at CES. Back then, companies like Samsung and Vizio were talking about creating tablets that talked to their TVs and app stores that could integrate their mobile devices into the entire living room full of devices. Apple is the model, of course, having already closed the loop on what Steve Jobs originally dubbed the “digital hub” back in 2001.

Apple created the model that everyone else is chasing, and it defines some of the critical battle lines between Samsung and Google.

Similar to Apple’s iOS ecosystem, Google’s Android is well established. The Samsung foray into this space is less developed, but is growing rapidly. Specifically designed Samsung Apps allow users to manage their media files between various Samsung devices, and, while they can be accessed by other Samsung devices, they are not accessible on other Android devices . As the company describes it: “The Samsung Media Hub app brings all-star entertainment to the Galaxy S smartphones and the Galaxy Tab. The app is preloaded on your device so you can instantly enjoy a diverse selection of movies and TV shows that start playing while they download.”

Samsung has been slowly testing the waters, including the Media Hub on devices to get users accustomed to using multiple platforms with their devices. This has given the company an unusual ability to work inside an already established ecosystem. These closed environments are extremely difficult to break into — unless you are invited in through the front door. So the seeds of a frenemy-ship are sown.

A new operating system
Samsung recently announced that by August it may release a new smartphone that works on its open source operating system called Tizen. The premium device planned for release at the …read more

Belkin finalizes Linksys acquisition

It’s official: Belkin announced today that it has completed its acquisition of Cisco’s Linksys division. In a pre-announcement briefing, executives from Belkin and Linksys emphasized that the two brands will remain distinct, but that Belkin is focused on developing a premium ecosystem for the connected home, as well as pursuing opportunities in the SMB market.

“This acquisition will help us realize our vision as being the global leader in the connected home market,” said Mike Chen, Belkin’s senior director of networking. “Linksys is a premium brand, due primarily to its dependability, reliability, and proven quality. It will be marketed for use in the home and in the small business environment.”

“Belkin will be more focused on the connected home, through its WeMo home-automation product line,” Chen continued. “Belkin also has great instincts as to what consumers want in terms of accessories for their mobile products and tablets.” Chen also emphasized, however, that Belkin plans to maintain two lines of routers—one under the Linksys brand and a second under the Belkin brand.

“Each brand has a distinct identity with different customers,” said Chen. “So we want to assure customers that anything either company announced at CES will be launched. Linksys will be maintained as a separate brand. Customer support will continue unchanged. There will be continuity. From a portfolio standpoint, Belkin remains committed to Linksys customers.”

Is NVIDIA Pulling Away in the Tablet Market?

By Adam Levine-Weinberg, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

For the past couple of years, Qualcomm has dominated the market for smartphone processors, boosted by its leadership in integrated mobile processors. However, new rival NVIDIA has had much more success in tablets. With NVIDIA looking to encroach on Qualcomm’s territory with its first integrated mobile processor — Tegra 4i — Qualcomm would like to reciprocate by gaining share in the non-Apple tablet market. However, from a performance standard, NVIDIA may be pulling away.

Tegra 4: the fastest processor
At the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show, NVIDIA released a new top-of-the-line mobile application processor: Tegra 4. While NVIDIA touted the chip as the “world’s fastest mobile processor,” industry observers were understandably cautious, given the fast-moving pace of mobile processor development. For example, Qualcomm also announced a new high-end chip at CES: the Snapdragon 800, which it touted as 75% faster than the previous-generation S4 chip.

However, a recent analysis from Microprocessor Report suggests that the Snapdragon 800 will not measure up to Tegra 4 in terms of pure performance. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors are designed with power-efficiency in mind, whereas NVIDIA was willing to use more power to generate extra performance. The Microprocessor Report analysts rightly conclude that this differentiation makes Tegra 4 more appealing for tablets, which usually have larger batteries and fewer power constraints as a result.

If Tegra 4 does have a significant performance advantage compared to Snapdragon 800, it suggests that NVIDIA has actually widened its performance lead in the current generation of chips. Last year’s dual-core Snapdragon S4 managed to perform nearly as well as the quad-core Tegra 3, presumably because of its more advanced Krait architecture. NVIDIA upped its game this year by moving from the older A9 architecture to the faster A15 architecture, while also going from just 12 GPU cores in Tegra 3 to 72 in Tegra 4.  This has more than offset the improvements that Qualcomm has made.

Attacking the smartphone segment
NVIDIA was able to maximize Tegra 4’s performance by compromising on power efficiency. This would ordinarily take the company out of the running for smartphone design wins. However, NVIDIA returned to the A9 architecture for its new Tegra 4i integrated mobile processor, in order to be more battery-friendly. The company believes that this will be “good enough”; Tegra 4i still packs 60 GPU cores (five times more than Tegra 3) to complement its quad-core processor. Performance will probably be comparable to or slightly behind the Snapdragon 800, but that should be enough to gain vendor consideration, particularly for mid-range phones.

Foolish conclusion
NVIDIA‘s decision to split its processor line in two was a wise choice. With Tegra 4, it was able to produce a high-performance processor that should bolster its advantage vis-a-vis Qualcomm in the Android/Windows RT tablet market. However, rather than trying to market a power-hungry chip to smartphone designers, NVIDIA designed a much more power-efficient integrated mobile processor in Tegra 4i. This strategy should pay off for investors …read more

Xi3 takes orders for Piston Steam box at sub-$1000 prices

If Xi3’s Piston is any indication, PC-based game consoles that run Steam and other services won’t come cheap.

The Piston, a modular gaming PC that’s small enough to hold in your hand, will cost $1000 and up when it ships near the end of this year. Xi3 is now taking pre-orders on its Website, with a $100 discount on all configurations for anyone who orders by March 17.

The base configuration includes a 3.2 GHz quad-core processor (Engadget says it’s an AMD A10), 8GB of RAM, and a 128 GB solid state drive. A 256 GB solid state drive costs another $340, and a 512 GB drive costs $750 extra. The Piston prototype we saw in January included 12 USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet, 2 mini-DisplayPort connectors, and an HDMI/DisplayPort combination jack.

Xi3 revealed the Piston during CES in January, but didn’t provide many specifics. The device has been referred to as a “Steam box,” because Valve, maker of the Steam PC gaming service, has invested in Xi3 to help bring the Piston to market.
