The state of the Windows Store: How useful are those 100,000 apps?

More than nine months into the great revamping known as Windows 8, a clear vision of its core is finally starting to emerge. The baked-in apps have been streamlined and Windows 8.1 looms, ready to polish the numerous rough edges found in the original release of the operating system. But Microsoft alone can’t improve what is truly the beating heart of Windows 8: The Windows Store.

Windows 8 revolves around the Windows Store. Every Live Tile that glimmers on the modern-style Start screen is the iconic representation of a Windows 8 app—and you can only snag Windows 8 apps in Microsoft’s own Windows Store. As the Windows Store goes, so goes the Windows 8 experience.

How, exactly, is the Windows Store doing? The obvious indicators are mixed. Windows RT devices can run only modern-style apps, not desktop apps, and they’re tanking hard. But app submissions picked up steam around the time of Microsoft’s Build conference, culminating in the shattering of the 100,000-app barrier in early July, and they’re still going (relatively) strong.

That’s a great milestone for Microsoft, but it’s still paltry compared to the approximately 1 million apps in Google Play and 900,000 apps in Apple’s App Store. So it’s a good time to take the pulse of the Windows Store again: Is 100,000 apps enough to keep a body happy? As I did last February, I spent days scouring the Windows Store and taking notes in five major categories: games, music apps, video apps, social apps, and a catch-all “other” category—to see how well Microsoft covered each. Here’s how they all measured up.

Google Play store inundated with scam apps, Symantec says

A steady stream of questionable applications is flowing daily into Google’s Play store for Android devices, according to security vendor Symantec.

Over the last seven months, Symantec found more than 1,200 suspicious applications in the Play store. Google removes many shortly after they’re published, but others stay in the store for a few days.

“Although they have short lives, the apps must provide ample profit for the scammers as they show no signs of halting their development of new ones,” wrote Joji Hamada of Symantec.

The applications can be difficult to assess and employ a series of maneuvers and layers in order to attempt to rip off users.

How to Float Multiple Widgets Over Any Android App on Your Samsung Galaxy S3

Running multiple applications at the same time is one of the Samsung Galaxy S3’s and S4’s biggest advantages over Apple devices, and it’s a fact that Samsung certainly harps on constantly in their well-targeted commercials.

Plus, there’s the whole widgets thing. There are zero widgets available for the iPhone, but thousands of them in Google Play for Android users. If you have a ton of really useful widgets on your GS3 like I do, why not multitask like a pro and have access to them anytime, anywhere?

Head of Google China leaves post, to be replaced by executive from Europe

Google’s leader for its China operations, John Liu, is leaving his position as the company continues to maintain a low-key presence in the nation following heated disputes over online censorship.

Liu has “decided to pursue other opportunities,” Google said in an email on Monday. Liu had been at Google for nearly six years, and originally was head of sales for the company’s Greater China operations. In 2009, he was elevated to head of Google’s Greater China business after the departure of his predecessor, Kai-Fu Lee, a tech entrepreneur well-known in the country.

Liu worked at Google as its search business in China slowly grew to compete with the country’s largest search engine Baidu. But in 2010, Google decided it would no longer agree to China’s demands for online censorship, and initiated a partial retreat from the Chinese market.

Since then, Google’s presence in China has diminished. The company’s market share for search is at 3 percent, according to Chinese analytics site CNZZ.com. In addition, many Google services, such as Google Play, YouTube or Google Plus are either blocked or not offered in the country.

How to Get Rounded Screen Corners on Your Samsung Galaxy S3 or Other Android Device

Tired of your Samsung Galaxy S3 being a square? Make it more well-rounded by ditching those 90-degree corners on your screen for new adjustable round corners instead. It may be a minor tweak, but the psychological effects of a more circular screen may help you feel more connected, safe, and, well…perfect. If you prefer the logic, order, and security of your sharp-cornered screen, then stick with what you got. Otherwise…

Go ahead and download the free RoundR app from Google Play. The only permissions it requires is to draw over other apps and to run at startup.

AVG releases free 'TuneUp' application for Android devices

Security vendor AVG has released an application for Android that lets users adjust power settings and manage applications to conserve battery power.

TuneUp for Android, which is in Google’s Play store, is free. The power controls can be used to turn off certain phone functions in case the battery is running low as well as monitor the power consumption of applications.

The application’s “Task Killer” shows the applications and services running on a device and lets users stop ones that are consuming a lot of memory, which may also may help an Android device run faster.

Users can set alerts with the “Data Usage” feature so they don’t run over their data limits set by their mobile service provider. The feature lists how much data has been used per application and when the application began consuming data.

Should Google Android Be Broken Up?

By Evan Niu, CFA, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

According to Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, the search giant has clearly won the mobile platform war. That assertion is based in part on the sheer fact that Android is by far the dominant mobile operating system on the planet. That’s indisputable.

Over the past two years, Android doubled its global market share and now powers 70% of all smartphones sold worldwide. That rise is incredible, any way you slice it.

Source: IDC.

The thing is that while Google likes to tout those legitimately impressive headline figures, saying there are now more than 1.3 million Android devices activated every day, the truth is that there are currently so many different distinct Android camps that lumping them all together is somewhat specious where it counts.

Should Android be broken up?

A subtle admission
Google has seemingly acknowledged this. The search giant subtly changed its methodology for measuring version distribution, which resulted in meaningful changes in its reported statistics. The aging Gingerbread fell from 44.2% to 39.8%, while the newest Jelly Bean soared from 16.5% to 25%.

Android version distribution. Source: Google.

The new method now measures the devices that visit the Google Play store instead of including all devices that check in to Google’s servers (i.e., activations). Google says “new data more accurately reflects those users who are most engaged in the Android and Google Play ecosystem.”

Translation: Google wants to emphasize its own Android camp to developers, while minimizing the importance of Amazon.com‘s fork as well as all the Chinese OEM forks out there. Google uses the aggregate figures when they make for good headlines, but it concentrates on its sanctioned Android versions when it matters strategically.

Google doesn’t directly benefit from the different forks out there, and Amazon’s is by far the most successful in tablets. The e-tailer was the No. 3 tablet vendor in the fourth quarter, with 11.5% of the market, and none of those Kindle Fires feed into Google Play. That’s what Amazon’s Appstore for Android is for.

Facebook just launched its Home software suite, which I consider more of a “half-fork,” since Home still feeds into Google Play even though it emphasizes Facebook’s social services over Google’s. From the social network’s perspective, Home is still the right strategy, since Facebook knows better than to compete on a primary platform level.

Even BlackBerry is now piggybacking on Android’s dominance, using ported Android apps to pad its app counts. BlackBerry devices still rely on BlackBerry World for their app fix, and developers have to manually port their apps to the platform to run inside an emulator, so those smartphones were never getting included in Google’s figures. BlackBerry has made some progress getting developers to go native, but the company serves as another example of a third party riding Android’s success with no benefit to Google.

You can’t have one without the other
Device fragmentation has long been cited

Facebook Home panned by some early users

Facebook’s new Home launcher for Android phones isn’t getting a lot of love in some circles, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a whirl.

The social networking behemoth released the offering Friday, but early users so far are giving it significantly more one-star ratings on Google Play than five-star ratings.

Usually, when an app is panned by users it’s a sure sign that something is amiss — either it’s poorly designed or offering little functionality unless you ante up for in-app purchases. That doesn’t appear to be the case here. The disenchanted seem to dislike the fact that Facebook Home “takes over” your phone and makes doing non-Facebook things more difficult.

Well, yeah. That’s kind of the point.

What it must be like to be Dropbox founders Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowski right now.

On the one hand, they’re running one of tech’s greatest success stories: a company whose signature file-syncing software has swarmed large company IT departments in ways not seen since Apple introduced the iPhone.

On the other, Dropbox may be attracting more competition than it can handle. Amazon.com is the latest to introduce file syncing via its Cloud Drive service, which was once intended to help the e-tailer compete with iTunes and Google‘s Play by creating a place to store digital goods such as music and movies.

Will Amazon’s entry into the file-syncing market disrupt Dropbox? And what’s the best stock play on cloud storage right now? Tim Beyers of Motley Fool Rule Breakers and Motley Fool Supernova answers these questions and more in the following interview with The Motley Fool‘s Erin Miller. Google Play Gets Sleek Makeover on Android

Buying new apps, books or music with your Android device may look a bit more swanky now, as Google announced the roll-out for a sharp new look for it’s Google Play store.

“The new design focuses on bigger images that jump off the page,” the company writes on the Official Android Blog. “Similarly themed content is grouped together so you can hone in on a magazine to read or an app to try.”

The redesigned Play Store is now available for Android phones and tablets running Android 2.2 (Froyo) or above, and it’s noticeably sparser and larger. Content is grouped together more closely, and Google has integrated more recommendation-based products to take advantage of the smaller display real estate. Most importantly, it’s much easier to go through checkout on the mobile device, allowing for a speedier purchase of games, books and video.

Google Revamps Design of Google Play on Android

By Evan Niu, CFA, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Search giant Google has unveiled a redesigned interface for its popular Google Play storefront on Android devices.

The company said that the new design features larger images to better illustrate content. Google is also proactively showing more recommendations and simplified the purchasing process.

Phones and tablets running Android version 2.2 Froyo or later will begin seeing the changes roll out today. According to Google’s Android statistics, less than 2% of users are running versions older than 2.2, so the vast majority of the Android user base will benefit from the changes.

Last year, mobile rival Apple similarly revamped its App Store interface with iOS 6 in order to focus more on app discovery. As mobile app repositories continue to grow in size, with iOS and Android both boasting the highest app counts, finding quality content has become increasingly difficult, which is why both Google and Apple have been focusing on recommendations and discovery.

OBJE and Partners Submit First Game to Apple App Store

SARASOTA, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Obscene Interactive, the gaming division of OBJ Enterprises (OTCBB: OBJE), is proud to announce that its debut gaming app, Phantasmic, has been submitted to the Apple (NAS: AAPL) App Store in conjunction with its developer, Novalon Games.

The submission is the culmination of months of hard work by OBJE and its partners to capitalize on the incredible rise in popularity of free-to-play games for both Apple and Android devices. According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, the App Store brings in annual sales of $25 billion, driven largely by gaming titles. Earlier this year, the App Store hit 40 billion downloads since its inception, including 20 billion in 2012 alone.

In a joint venture with Source Street, OBJE formed gaming developer Novalon Games late last year to produce exciting new titles primed to succeed in the App Store and Google Play platforms. Once Phantasmic is approved by the App Store, the company expects to begin earning revenue from in-game purchases by downloaders.

“This is a major milestone in our mobile gaming initiative, and we’re extremely excited to go through the submission and approval process for the very first time,” said OBJE CEO Paul Watson. “Going through this process internally helps us to understand the market and hurdles associated with publishing social and mobile applications so that we can deliver economies of scale to our future gaming partners and indie developers.”

Phantasmic is the company’s first submission, but not the last. Hot on the heels of Phantasmic, OBJE and Novalon plan to submit their second gaming app, Stupid Pixels: an open-ended, puzzle-based strategy game that recalls motifs from the classic Lemmings.

Obscene Interactive is a division of OBJ Enterprises, Inc. that is working to develop innovative gaming products for the Apple App Store and Google (NAS: GOOG) Play platforms alongside companies such as Electronic Arts (NAS: EA) , Glu Mobile Inc. (NAS: GLUU) and The9 Limited (NAS: NCTY) .
