Something odd is going on with benchmark testing and Samsung’s Galaxy S4. After reports of strange results, the team at Anandtech took a closer look at the data returned by two Exynos 5 Octa-based international versions of the Galaxy S4, with a PowerVR SGX GPU. The GPU in these models is capable of running at 533MHz, but the evidence shows Samsung may only allow such speeds while running particular benchmarking apps.

NFC technology as a mobile pay technology never lived up to high expectations. Never mind, say analysts, because NFC, which stands for near field communications, as a wireless technology that can transfer data at short distances, may be the starter for innovative applications to come. A Kickstarter NFC-enabled, NFC Ring project now under way is a case in point. This is a ring made to be worn on the finger at all times, like a wedding band. The promotional video says that the ring allows the user to unlock a door lock that is NFC-enabled, unlock a smartphone just by touching it with the ring, or, for those so inclined, can hold your bitcoin address. Having spent some time with the BB10 powered Z10 and Q10 handsets from BlackBerry, I can see a lot of promise, but there’s a lot of work for the Canadian smartphone company to get through to bring BB10 up to the standards on show from Android, Windows Phone, and iOS. If BlackBerry is to reclaim the title of ‘the third ecosystem’ back from Windows Phone, there are a few areas I think they need to address. Developers, Developers, Developers The smartphone in 2013 is all about the apps. That’s where the extra functionality comes in, that’s where third parties can get their services into the handsets, and that’s what people go looking for in the stores. BlackBerry’s initial approach of bolstering their numbers with the ability to side-load Android apps is a nice touch, but it’s a stop-gap solution at best. Apps designed for BB10 are needed, and BlackBerry need to invest to build up the developer ecosystem. Make Sure There Are Lots Of Trial Versions This is one of the few areas where everyone can learn from Windows Phone – which has a trial version available for the vast majority of the applications in the store. For BlackBerry, where many functions are provided by second tier apps (such as ebook reading – where’s the Kindle or Nook readers?) there’s no way to try before you buy. Building up the confidence of users in third party apps is just as important as evangelising the developer community towards the platform. Stop Relying On Gestures Yes, I get it, the swiping gestures are the big marketing push – but it’s nothing more than a different implementation of a home button in your user interface. At least it’s not as gimmicky as the air gestures on the Samsung Galaxy S4, but relying on this upward move (with a twist to the left or right to open the hub) is not going to drive the PR message through the rest of 2013 and into 2014. Send In A Ninja Across The UI While I’m talking about the user interface, BlackBerry needs to get someone who’s entire job is to make sure every single part of the user interface works in the same way – in some menus you have to keep your finger on the screen as you slide through options, while others need you to lift from the screen. BB10 needs to mature and work in the same way in every area. Physical Keyboards Mean Too Much Scrolling While we’re at it, is there a way that BB10 can reduce the need for scrolling? It’s not that noticeable on the Z10, but on the physical keyboard devices such as the Q5 and Q10 there’s a huge amount of vertical scrolling, from the menu ribbons and setting screens to flicking through the Hub and reading emails. Samsung’s Galaxy S4 has great hardware and some great added functionality — but some of its new features are baffling or downright silly.

For a prominent company that’s frequently in the news, BlackBerry is one of the most misunderstood stocks in the market today. Too much attention focuses on the company’s past missteps — which allowed Apple and Google to rapidly overtake it — rather than BlackBerry’s future prospects. Similarly, now that the new BB10 OS has come to market, too many people are focusing on the success or failure of the Z10 (BlackBerry’s first BB10 device) rather than the ecosystem’s overall potential.
To be “successful,” the Z10 would need to sell perhaps 2 million units per quarter — just a tiny fraction of Apple’s iPhone sales or Samsung‘s Galaxy S series sales. However, even that level of sales is not necessary to justify a higher valuation for BlackBerry, because the Z10 is just a small part of BlackBerry’s future. The much more important Q10 smartphone — equipped with BlackBerry’s signature QWERTY keyboard — is just hitting the market now. Furthermore, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins has already revealed that lower-cost BB10 smartphones will come to market later this year, probably in the fall. Extremely low market expectations and a strong product roadmap will most likely combine to generate strong returns for BlackBerry investors.
Cheap stock
The investment case for BlackBerry is straightforward. First — and most obviously — the stock trades for $15, which is below book value. In other words, the company is priced to never earn a profit in the future and eventually go bankrupt. This is a big change from 2011, when the stock peaked above $70, or 2008, when BlackBerry shares briefly traded for more than $140:

To put it another way, for the past year, investors have been able to buy BlackBerry stock at prices that had not been seen since the company was a small start-up.
Great product
Second, BlackBerry has a competitive product again. The BB10 operating system is great for multitasking and includes several unique features that may appeal to current iPhone or Android users. Many people already claim that iOS is getting stale and that Apple has lost its touch for innovation since Steve Jobs passed away. More recently, Samsung’s Galaxy S4 has underwhelmed many reviewers, who see it as a great phone, but not a big improvement over the SIII.
In all likelihood, most iPhone users will stay within the iOS ecosystem, and most Android users will stay within Android going forward. But consumer desires for something “fresh” could drive a significant number of people to BlackBerry over the next couple of years. This may get BlackBerry to only 10% market share, but the smartphone market has grown tremendously since the original BlackBerry went out of fashion. Today, having 10% market share would involve having BlackBerry sell more phones than it did at the peak of its popularity.

More companies have signed on for ARM‘s Big.Little chip design technology, which mixes low-power and power-hungry cores for more efficient energy use of chips in smartphones, tablets, servers and other equipment.
Seventeen companies have so far licensed Big.Little, ARM said in a statement Wednesday. That is a jump from seven companies announced at the Mobile World Congress in February.
Big.Little is meant to preserve battery life on faster smartphones and tablets. Its design reserves high-power cores for demanding tasks like video playback, while the low-power processors take on mundane tasks like answering phone calls or playing audio. That effectively provides power-efficient use of processors and better performance per watt.
Samsung is using the Big.Little design in its Exynos 5 Octa chip, which combines four high-power ARM Cortex-A15 cores with four low-power ARM Cortex-A7 processors. The Octa 5 chip is used in some Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphones. A prototype tablet displayed by ARM at MWC also demonstrated the processor, with the low-power cores largely handling background tasks.

Sprint and T-Mobile customers won’t have to wait long for Samsung’s Galaxy S4, as both carriers have announced that the new Android smartphone will be available starting next week.
Sprint will begin selling its version of Samsung’s latest flagship on April 27th, with pre-orders being accepted starting tomorrow. The 16GB model of the Galaxy S4 will be sold for $249.99 on contract, and new Sprint subscribers who switch their service from another provider will get an additional $100 credit.

U.S. carriers have started nailing down the release dates and prices of Samsung’s new flagship phone, the Galaxy S 4.
UPDATE: AT&T has begun accepting pre-orders for the Galaxy S4 on its official website with shipments expected to begin on Tuesday, April 30th. New or existing subscribers can pick up the 16GB S4 for $199.99 with a 2-year contract or for $449.99 on a 1-year contract. Those who want to shed the commitment all together can pick up the unsubsidized version for $639.99.

Just before the Samsung Galaxy S4 hits the streets, it’s probably worth pointing out that the handset, while available in a number of memory sizes, is pretty poor value for money as you climb up the memory stakes when you look at the alternatives.
Attention folks—the Samsung Galaxy S4 is coming soon to a cellular provider near you. Though the official release date for the GS4 here in the states has been closely guarded, a recent leak from a Staples store training document has revealed some possible days that the GS4 could land in your hands—and it’s not that far away! Mobile chip giant Qualcomm has now received three bullish research notes from Street analysts. Qualcomm is set to capture more content in Samsung’s Galaxy S4, with its chips in more variants. Last year, Qualcomm faced competition from NVIDIA‘s Tegra, but this year, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 seems to be holding its own quite well in current Android devices. With the Samsung Galaxy S4 slated to debut later this month, Engadget reports that the smartphone manufacturer has released a sleek new campaign that shows off the S4’s newest features.
These commercials are a noticeable pivot from the not-so-subtle jibes at the iPhone that the company used upon the release of the Galaxy S III. Instead, there are three 30-second clips that show off the freshest features on the S4: S Translator, Sound Shot and Group Play.

If you’ve been eager to replace your start screen with a scrolling Facebook feed, your day has finally come. The HTC First is the first smartphone with deep enough Facebook integration to be dubbed the “Facebook phone.” It uses an Android OS primed with Facebook’s baby-blue interface, sending you directly to the familiar news feed, photo service, and messaging system that used to hide in a dedicated app.
Reviews for the HTC First “Facebook phone” started appearing on the web today, with largely positive reactions. Its specs are on par with what smartphone users expect, and some have expressed an appreciation for the way it puts Facebook front-and-center without making it difficult to use other Android programs.
Early comparisons to the Samsung Galaxy S4 are pitting the HTC First against stiff competition, and showing serious promise for the fledgling smartphone. Although not full 1080 HD like the S4, it does run at 720p on a 4.3-inch screen. A 5 MP primary camera and 1.6 MP secondary camera, 16 GB of storage, and Jelly Bean 4.1 OS run on a cutting-edge Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor, with an Adreno 305 GPU and 1 GB of RAM.
Since a Facebook app has been available for a long time, the HTC First doesn’t have an entirely unique selling point, except that Facebook comes preloaded and dominates the interface. The appeal may lie mostly with extremely active Facebook fans, but with Facebook reporting more than 1 billion active users, that may be more than enough.
