Nintendo Direct and 3DS Showcase: Prediction Time!

While things have been rather quiet on the Wii U front – save a stray Toki Tori and LEGO here and there – when it comes to portables, Nintendo has been kicking butt and taking names. The 3DS software library is on fire, and recent releases like the masterful Fire Emblem Awakening (check out our full review here) and the ridiculously enjoyable Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (full review here) have made it hard to put the system down.

And yet it seems things will only keep getting better. Nintendo recently announced not only a 3DS showcase, where members of the press will have a chance to check out a variety of 3DS software, but also a 3DS-focused Nintendo Direct – and it’s all happening tomorrow.

Super Nintendo Video Chat: LEGO, Stars and Secrets

So… something interesting happened on the way to recording Super Nintendo Video Chat this week. We kind of forgot what a Shine looked like. Weird, right?

It’s a bit of a long story, but when Rich forgets precisely what he saw, and our video crew, upon replicating these Nintendo secrets, thought a Super Star was a Shine, disaster is imminent. Suffice to say, we’re going to be talking about the Nintendo secrets, and within that, we’ll be talking about Shines. And wondering if Nintendo is interested in doing more Super Mario Sunshine. And generally looking stupid.

We just wanted to get that out of the way first. No doubt you’ll still mock us in the comments.

Moving along, the crew of Sam, Rich, Altano and – drum roll, please – Jeremy Parish, chat about the many games arriving on Nintendo’s systems, most notably Etrian Odyssey IV, Castlevania, HarmoKnight and a small bit of Luigi’s Mansion. Plus a great deal on LEGO City Undercover. Speaking of those Nintendo secrets, let us show you some of them:

Evan Bacon, 15-Year-Old, Builds Life-Size Superman, Batman, And Iron Man Using LEGOs (PHOTOS)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

It’s a bird, it’s a plane… it’s a life-size LEGO Superman, built by an extremely awesome teenager from Texas.

Evan Bacon, a 15-year-old LEGO enthusiast, finished building the six foot and six inch tall Superman earlier this month. According toTechnabob.com, he used 18,000 individual LEGO pieces to replicate the Superman character in the upcoming film, “Man of Steel,” which premieres in June.

Evan also built a life-size version of Batman when he was 13. The LEGO masterpiece, which took three months and between 10,000 and 20,000 bricks to finish, earned Evan three first place prizes at the 2011 Brick Awards.

LEGO City Undercover Review

LEGO City Undercover faces a burden unlike any previous LEGO game developed by Traveller’s Tales. Not only is this production the first LEGO game by Traveller’s Tales to not feature a major movie or comic book license, it’s the first major Wii U game of 2013 – and the biggest release to come since that system’s launch four months ago. Nintendo fans will not just be looking for a great LEGO game. They’ll be looking for Undercover to deliver a complete and lasting experience that will help end a languishing software drought. In many respects, LEGO City Undercover delivers upon that potential. This is by far the largest LEGO game Traveller’s Tales has produced. Yet, at the same time, it’s held back by a variety of issues, including the fact that its core gameplay doesn’t have much depth.

5 More Games You Won’t Believe Somebody Made

Have you ever come across a game that completely stuns you? Not in terms of quality; rather, the fact that it was actually made in the first place? Just like the top four floors of a seven-storey Tokyo adult shop, there are gaming fetishes out there most of us don’t even know exist. These gamers are being catered to by some remarkably specialised experiences, built just for them.

We’ve dug into several of these before but let’s take a look at a few more.

For most people, the joy of cutting grass is something that wears off extraordinarily quickly. It usually happened around five minutes after your father realised you were tall enough to push the lawnmower yourself, leaving him free to go back to spending Sunday afternoons watching football inside. It’s at this point most kids remember they used to be able to get an ice cream for simply pretending to do your homework and making sure you didn’t leave any upturned LEGO out in the hallway late at night.

LEGO Batman 2 On Its Way To Wii U

Warner has announced that LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes will be released on Wii U in Spring.

New Wii U features are part of the deal, including an “enhanced interactive map” (surprise! A map!), and it will be playable entirely on the Wii U Gamepad, should you so choose.

We very much enjoyed LEGO Batman 2 at IGN – it got an 8.5. It’s sold 3.4 million on other platforms worldwide to date. And if you’re in the mood for more LEGO and Batman-related things, IGN‘s Daniel Krupa recently got his hands on some Dark Knight Rises LEGO.

LEGO Does Man of Steel

Earlier this week, we got our first looks at Mattel’s new Man of Steel action figure line, including characters like Jor-El and Zod. Now, LEGO has released new images for their Metropolis Showdown set, which pits Henry Cavill’s Superman against Michael Shannon’s Zod in what looks like a mini-fig fight for the ages. Check it out:

Hitman HD Trilogy Review

We don’t know where the Hitman series sits on the list of famous Danish exports. Somewhere beneath Vikings, LEGO and pork products, probably. Less popular than Carlsberg but cooler than Lars Ulrich? That’s just a guess.

Either way the Hitman series, which has moved more than eight million units around the world at last count, certainly has plenty of fans. Hardcore ones, too. The kind that relish tough, intelligent gameplay. To sate said fans, and perhaps muster up a few more, Square Enix and Hitman dev IO Interactive have seen fit to stitch together Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, Hitman: Contracts and Hitman: Blood Money in one convenient package. The PC-only original is absent from the bundle but it’s worth remembering the best parts of it were actually re-imagined for consoles in Contracts.

Apple Might Take a Page Out of the LEGO Playbook As It Plans Its Next "Innovation"

By Allen Adamson, Contributor What comes to mind when you hear the brand name LEGO? Perhaps, it brings back memories of the fun you had playing for hours on end with those little plastic interlocking blocks. Or, it might be thoughts of the kids or grandkids with whom you spent hours on end building cities and airports and castles with those little plastic blocks. Maybe it’s thoughts of picking up, or tripping over, all those colorful blocks of plastic after the kids or grandkids have moved on to other activities. As a father, I think of the playing and the, well, helping to pick up. But, as a marketing professional, I think about what a nifty brand LEGO is; a brand which was launched in a small workshop in Denmark in 1932 and has since become the third largest producer of play materials in the world. The brand keeps its edge, not just because the toy makers at the top continue to come up with imaginative iterations of the simple knob-and-tube connecting system on which the product was originally based, but because it stays connected to its founder’s simple guiding principle that “Only the best is good enough,” whether the best refers to the product, or to the care of its millions of young LEGO enthusiasts.

LEGO Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out on DVD

Following a record breaking debut on Cartoon Network, LEGO and Lucasfilm announced today that LEGO Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out will be getting a DVD release on March 26.

Here’s the official synopsis: “The heroes of the Rebel Alliance including heroic Luke Skywalker, swaggering Han Solo and steadfast Princess Leia have no time to celebrate their victory over the Empire as a new Imperial threat arises. But as Jedi-in training Luke embarks on this next mission, he discovers that his celebrity status as a ‘Death-Star-Blower-Upper’ can be a double-edged lightsaber when he’s constantly mobbed by crazed fans. So much for secret missions! Meanwhile, Darth Vader and Darth Maul are locked in a hilarious ‘Sith-ling’ rivalry as they compete for the Emperor’s approval. It’s an action-packed comic adventure that’s out of this world!”

LEGO City: Undercover Titles Dated

Nintendo has announced the release dates for two titles in the LEGO City: Undercover series on Wii U and 3DS.

LEGO City: Undercover will launch on Wii U in North America on March 18, while the game’s prequel, LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins, will arrive on 3DS on April 21.

While it’s slightly odd that the prequel will release more than a month after the standard game, it’s good to know we won’t have to wait much longer to get a desperately-needed brick fix. When we got our hands on the Wii U title, we found that despite numerous comparisons to Grand Theft Auto, the game resembled it in no way. Finally free from the shackles of its recent licensing agreements, it’ll be interesting to see how well the next game in the LEGO franchises manages standing on its own two feet.
