Former Finnish diplomat Max Jakobson dies

Max Jakobson, a former Finnish diplomat who helped shape his country’s policy of neutrality during the Cold War, has died. He was 89.

Jakobson was born into a Jewish family in the Finnish city of Vyborg, which was ceded to the Soviet Union after World War II.

His family later moved to Helsinki, the capital, where Jakobson launched an international career that took him to London as the correspondent of a Finnish newspaper in 1948-1953, and later to Washington, where he served as Finland‘s ambassador to the United Nations for six years. In 1971, Jakobson ran for the post of U.N. secretary general, but he was defeated by Kurt Waldheim of Austria.

Jakobson wrote widely about Finnish politics in the Cold War and was a major shaper of public opinion about it.

He died in Helsinki on March 9, and was buried a few days later. Jakobson is survived by three adult children.

Home towns struggle with legacy of Stalin and Hitler

By hnn

The birth towns of Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler are divided on the issue of how to deal with the legacy of the dictators who slaughtered millions.

In some ways it would be hard to imagine two more different places than Gori in Georgia and Braunau am Inn in Austria.

Gori, with its crumbling Soviet-era apartment blocks, is set in the foothills of the Caucasus mountains.

You can still see scars from the 2008 war between Georgia and Russia, when Russian troops entered the town.

It is poor. Even in winter, pensioners try to earn a few pennies, helping cars to park.

Braunau, by contrast, is a comfortable little Austrian town, with a beautifully preserved medieval centre.

Cross the bridge over the Inn river, close to the main square, and you find yourself in Germany, in Bavaria – one of the wealthiest parts of Europe….

Mexico may drop out of world's tourism top 10

Mexico‘s top tourism official says the country may be dropped from the list of the world’s top 10 tourist destinations, a spot it has held for years.

Tourism Secretary Claudia Ruiz Massieu hasn’t said why the drop has occurred, but there were declines in 2012 in two areas that have been affected by violence — border tourism and cruise ship stopovers.

The country has shown an overall drop in the number of international tourists arriving.

The regional director for the World Tourism Organization said Tuesday it may be less a story of Mexico losing tourists than about other countries such as Russia, Malaysia and Austria making big gains.

Despite the drop in visitors, he noted that tourism revenues to Mexico have been growing.

Cerus Signs INTERCEPT Platelet Agreements With Two Key Blood Component Suppliers in Germany and Austria

  • TILAK, University Clinics, Regional Hospital Innsbruck (LKI), one of the largest hospitals in Austria, signs one year agreement for Cerus’ INTERCEPT platelet system.
  • ZIT GmbH Hamburg (Zentralinstitut Hamburg), the largest in-house blood component supplier of the German Asklepios Group, signs four year agreement for the INTERCEPT Blood System for pathogen inactivation of platelet components.

CONCORD, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Cerus Corporation (NAS: CERS) announced today that the TILAK, University Clinics, Regional Hospital Innsbruck (LKI) in Austria and ZIT GmbH Hamburg in Germany, signed one and four year purchase agreements, respectively, for the INTERCEPT Blood System for platelets.

LKI is one of the largest hospitals in Austria, with its Central Institute for Blood Transfusion supplying an estimated 6,000 platelet units annually to the federal state of Tyrol. LKI is the second facility in Austria to adopt INTERCEPT for platelets. Together with the General Hospital of Vienna (AKH), an estimated total of 12,000 platelet units, or 30% of the Austrian platelet market, could be treated with INTERCEPT. Implementation of the INTERCEPT platelet system at LKI is expected to start in March 2013.

ZIT Hamburg supplies roughly 10,000 platelet units annually and is the largest in-house blood component supplier to the Asklepios Group, one of the three largest operators of private hospitals in Germany. Implementation is expected to occur upon ZIT Hamburg’s receipt of regulatory approval from the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut to produce INTERCEPT-treated platelets.

“Considering the inherent limitations and increasing cost of the current testing strategies used for platelets, we believe the INTERCEPT Blood System for platelets offers a strong value proposition that combines patient safety with commercial benefits,” stated O. Schertges, CEO of the ZIT Hamburg.

“We believe the breadth of clinical and routine-use data for INTERCEPT platelets accumulated over the last 10 years may have positively influenced the decisions made by LKI and ZIT Hamburg,” said William ‘Obi’ Greenman, Cerus’ president and chief executive officer. “It is this clinical experience and hemovigilance data that led to FDA‘s recent agreement to allow Cerus to proceed with a modular PMA submission for INTERCEPT platelets without the need to conduct another prospective clinical trial.”

Should I Buy Royal Dutch Shell for My ISA?

By Roland Head, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

LONDON — Not many companies can currently provide you with a 5.5% dividend income from a payout that hasn’t been cut for more than thirty years.

One company that can, however, is Royal Dutch Shell  , the world’s third-largest oil company. In 2012, Shell delivered net profits of $26.5 billion on sales of $467 billion — that’s more than the GDP of Finland and Austria.

Although there is no guarantee that the firm will maintain its impressive dividend record, Shell’s payout is probably one of the safest in the FTSE 100, with more than three decades of consistency behind it.

A tax-efficient income
There’s no denying that dividend income is the main reason for owning shares in Shell. The firm has provided an average dividend yield of 5.2% over the last five years, 60% higher than the current FTSE 100 average of 3.2%.

Shell pays a quarterly dividend and recently announced a 2% increase to its fourth-quarter payout for 2012, as well a planned 4.7% dividend increase for the first quarter of 2013. In total, analysts expect Shell’s payout to rise by 7.9% in 2013 — more than twice the rate of inflation.

By holding Shell shares within an ISA (just click here for more information about the benefits of ISAs), you can ensure that this generous income does not attract any further tax. This could really boost your returns over the long term, especially if you are a higher-rate tax payer.

Profit from scale
Shell is one of the world’s five super-major oil companies, meaning that it is one of very few that have the combined financial and technical might needed to take on the very largest of projects.

One of the areas the company has focused on is increasing its share of the global gas market, and around half of Shell’s production is now natural gas. This production provides the group with a more diversified production profile and should help it adapt to future changes in demand.

At the end of 2012, Shell was producing 3.4 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, and had proved reserves of around 13.6 billion barrels. Shell reckons these reserves would maintain production for another eleven years, but it’s focused on growth, and is currently developing a further 20 billion barrels of resources across 60 projects.

2013’s top ISA income stock?
If you like the idea of using an ISA to hold high-yielding income shares, then as well as Shell I’d also recommend you take a look at the Motley Fool‘s latest free report, “The Top ISA Income Stock for 2013“.

You see, the company analyzed in this report currently offers a yield of 5.7%, and the Fool’s expert analysts believe that its current share price of 700 pence could be 20% below its true value. Becton Dickinson Buys Cato Software

By Rich Smith, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Franklin Lakes, N.J.-based Becton, Dickinson and Company  has bought medication “safety solutions” software maker Cato Software Solutions for an undisclosed sum, as BD confirmed Tuesday.

Vienna, Austria-based Cato produces software that automates the creation and sharing of data aimed at reducing human error, standardizing practices, and streamlining workflow in the process of delivering drugs in both pharmacy and clinical settings. In essence, the software tells drug dispensers how and how much of a drug to distribute, with the aim of reducing medical errors. As such, the business would tend to enhance BD‘s prefillable drug delivery systems and related businesses. In a statement, BD Medical-Medical Surgical Systems President William A. Tozzi predicted the Cato acquisition would “help us accelerate BD‘s growth, especially in the pharmacy segment.”

Specific financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, although BD did allow that the transaction will probably be “minimally dilutive” in fiscal 2013. In any case, the company confirmed that the Cato purchase will not affect the firm’s earnings guidance for this year.

In BD‘s Feb. Q1 2013 earnings release, the company guided investors to expect 3.5% to 4% revenue growth this year, with diluted earnings per share from continuing operations probably coming in between $5.69 and $5.72, resulting in 6% to 6.5% earnings growth year over year.

Austria marks annexation by Germany 75 years ago

Austria‘s chancellor has urged fellow Austrians to strive to prevent a return of the political climate that allowed Nazi atrocities, in comments marking Germany‘s annexation of Austria 75 years ago.

Werner Faymann joined other government leaders, religious dignitaries and survivors of Hitler’s era at Vienna’s Central Cemetery to unveil a plaque honoring the thousands of Austrians killed by the Nazis for opposing them, before and after the so-called “Anschluss.”

He said Monday that Austrians “have to do their utmost” to prevent a repeat of such crimes by actively supporting democracy and standing up against racism and fascism.

Austrians have moved in recent decades from the widely held postwar belief that they were Germany‘s victims to acceptance that they participated in Nazi atrocities.

No Shareholder or U.K. Hurdles for Avis-Zipcar Merger

By Dan Radovsky, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

The United Kingdom Office of Fair Trading determined there is no need to investigate the Avis Budget Group‘s acquisition of Zipcar for U.K. antitrust law violation, according to a joint announcement yesterday by both companies.

The Avis Budget Group, with 28,000 employees, has more than 10,000 rental locations in approximately 175 countries. Zipcar has almost 10,000 cars for sharing among its 777,000 members in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Spain, and Austria.

The U.S. Department of Justice has essentially approved the transaction by not reviewing it during the 30-day period mandated by the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Act. That window closed on Feb. 11.

A special meeting of Zipcar stockholders held on March 7 upheld the deal, and the companies anticipate that the transaction will become final during the week of March 11.

ING Completes Sale of U.K. Division to Barclays

By Rich Duprey, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Dutch financial institution ING Groep announced it had completed the sale of ING Direct UK to Barclays as part of a year-long process of focusing its operations primarily on retail, direct, and commercial banking in Europe, life insurance, and retirement services.

ING transferred 13.4 billion euro of ING Direct UK’s savings and deposits, and 6.4 billion euro of mortgages to Barclays, and booked the impact of the transactions in the third and the fourth quarter results of 2012. While it incurred a combined loss of 260 million euro for the transfer of the business and the investment portfolio, that number is better than the 320 euro loss it had expected to incur when the deal was announced last October.

The sale will lead to a capital release of approximately 280 million euro in the first quarter of 2013, due to a reduction in risk-weighted assets, or those assets deemed riskier than others against which a bank should hold more capital to protect against default. This is expected to result in a positive impact on ING Bank’s core Tier 1 ratio of 12 basis points, based on ING Bank’s core Tier 1 ratio of 11.9% at December 31, 2012.

The ING Direct units in Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain are not affected by today`s announcement.

Tyranny Creep: The Liberal State Of Denial

By Dan DeRoeck

obama hitler Tyranny Creep: The Liberal State of Denial

It’s been several months since Barrack Obama was elected to a second term; an inauspicious moment in our history when it was voted by the “majority” to eradicate the definitive democracy, leaving conservative patriots shell-shocked from the imminent “fundamental transformation.” Tyranny creep is now the operative, favored by the most ill-informed voters in our history.

Obama’s first term was disjointed at best; we had to endure only the desultory looting of our capitalist personification. The grand plan had been defined, but they were certainly not going to show their hand. Not yet anyway. Behind the iron curtain, the annexing of the Shadow Party was in motion, setting the stage for an onslaught of our democracy in Obama’s second term and beyond.

The calm before the storm ended abruptly — after the election came an abhorrent unleashing of aggressive, calculating, and fiscally pathetic socialist policies. Everything was now fair game for the Bobblehead-in-Chief and the race was on to use all means and every ploy possible to methodically dismantle our democracy and shred our core principles.

For a country that was once a benchmark of unabashed democracy for over 230 years, Obama’s second term election marked the end of a glorious ride, and the beginning of the radical transformation we feared. ”Birth pangs” resulting from the abatement of our liberties and numerous coups on our constitution, have already begun to change the very fabric of our culture.

To make matters worse, the once steadfast conservative arm of congress abandoned their partisanship. The very essence of our being had been hijacked by a well-defined group of far-left political terrorists that now hold a gun to our head with no surrogate in sight. The political needle has drifted radically to the left, with indubitable disregard from the “conservative” base — our elected officials have left their post for greener pastures.

Let’s call it what it is shall we? Obama is a socialist, with unequivocal tendencies towards fascism. One only needs to look at his past to realize Obama marches to a different beat. The Tyranny-in-Chief and his goons are embarking on a Third Position journey of Fascism. Somewhere between a socialist and communistic state lies Obama’s delusional grandeur that will play out in his warped mind for the next four years; and if the puppet master has any say in the matter, it will become indoctrinated.

Obama has even taken a play right out of Hitler’s playbook. Stay with me here.

Many believe Hitler forcefully overtook Austria. Not so at all. As a matter of fact, Austria elected Hitler into power by a massive 98% of the vote! Embracing Hitler and the Nazi nomenclature meant to many, the promise of employment and the badly needed help for families.

The Austrian people were eventually lulled to sleep by massive entitlements and the promise of “stripping away the evil” …read more

Austrian cardinal: a conservative open to reform

Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn is a soft-spoken conservative who is ready to listen to those espousing reform. That profile that could appeal to fellow cardinals looking to elect a pontiff with widest-possible appeal to the world’s 1 billion Catholics.

His nationality may be his biggest disadvantage: Electors may be reluctant to choose another German speaker as a successor to Benedict XVI.

A man of low tolerance for the child abuse scandals roiling the church, Schoenborn himself was elevated to the its upper echelons of the Catholic hierarchy after his predecessor resigned 18 years ago over accusations that he was a pedophile.

___

EDITOR’S NOTE: As the Roman Catholic Church prepares to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI, The Associated Press is profiling key cardinals seen as “papabili” — contenders to the throne. In the secretive world of the Vatican, there is no way to know who is in the running, and history has yielded plenty of surprises. But these are the names that have come up time and again in speculation. Today: Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn.

___

Multilingual and respected by Jews, Muslims and Orthodox Christians, Benedict XVI’s friend and former pupil was one of the cardinal electors in the 2005 papal conclave that chose the German as head of the Catholic church. A scholar who is at home in the pulpit, Schoenborn also is well connected in the Vatican — and appears willing to make it his home, if reluctantly.

Asked if he would like to succeed Benedict on news of the pontiff’s plan to step down, he said: “my heart is in Vienna, my heart is in Austria — but naturally with the whole Church as well.”

Such reticence is not unusual for a prince of the church known for a quiet management style focused on steering the Austrian church around controversy.

That has not always been possible. The austere Schoenborn owed his own elevation to the scandal involving his predecessor, Hans Groer, who was accused of abusing young boys.
