Swiss papers say US eyes tax info in Liechtenstein

Swiss media report that U.S. prosecutors are poised to step up their probes of wealthy U.S. tax evaders using the tiny principality of Liechtenstein.

Zurich daily newspapers Neue Zuercher Zeitung and Tages-Anzeiger say the U.S. Justice Department has requested statistical data on U.S. clients of Swiss banks with interests in companies or foundations in Liechtenstein.

The reports Wednesday each describe the prosecutors’ request for information by the end of this week as a potential new front in the long-running U.S. probe into more than a dozen Swiss banks, including UBS and Credit Suisse and private banks such as Wegelin & Co., which is closing after admitting to helping American tax cheats.

The papers describe the letter as an informal request that could lead to a formal tax probe.

Independents upset Liechtenstein's 3-party system

Independent candidates have done surprisingly well in a parliamentary election in the tiny Alpine principality of Liechtenstein.

The newly-formed group, The Independents, took 15.3 percent of the vote to come third in Sunday’s vote.

The centrist Patriotic Union of Prime Minister Klaus Tschuetscher suffered the biggest loss of votes compared to 2009 and came second with 33.5 percent.

The center-right Progressive Citizens’ Party came first with 40 percent, slightly less than four years ago, while the left-leaning Free List gained ground with 11.1 percent of the vote.

Observers say the independent’s success results from popular anger about planned austerity measures.

The four independent candidates to win a place in the 25-seat parliament include a banker and a cross-dressing mechanic.

Talks to form a new coalition government are now under way.

Iceland wins court case over Icesave deposits

A court has cleared Iceland of wrongdoing over its refusal to repay depositors’ money lost in the country’s banking collapse.

The Luxembourg-based European Free Trade Association Court said Monday that deposit-guarantee laws did not cover “a systemic bank failure of the magnitude experienced in Iceland.”

Some 340,000 British and Dutch savers lost deposits when Icesave, an online subsidiary of Iceland‘s Landsbanki, collapsed along with the island nation’s other banks in 2008.

The savers were repaid by the British and Dutch governments, who have been trying to get their money back.

The court case was brought by the European Free Trade Association Surveillance Authority, which makes sure that Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway comply with European Union regulations. The countries are not EU members but belong to the European Economic Area.
