Sweet 16 Teams 2013: Louisville, Indiana, Kansas Survive, Advance In NCAA Tournament

By The Huffington Post News Editors

After 52 games, the field of 68 teams in the 2013 NCAA Tournament has been narrowed to 16.

In a typically mad stretch of March, the unheralded Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast University earned a spot in this select group while the team atop the AP poll on Selection Sunday did not. Top-seeded Gonzaga was ousted in the third round by No. 9 Wichita State in the wild West Region. In that same section of your very likely busted bracket, No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast ousted both No. 2 Georgetown and No. 7 San Diego State.

The East Region went a bit more predictably, sending its top four seeds into the round of 16. In the Midwest, No. 1 overall seed Louisville overwhelmed its first two opponents, doing nothing to disappoint the many experts who tapped them to cut down the nets in Atlanta.

Southwest Philly Floater: Tyrone Garland Game-Winning Shot Lifts La Salle Over Ole Miss (VIDEO/GIF)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

A well-timed Southwest Philly Floater sent Marshall Mania back to Oxford.

Thanks to a game-winning bucket by Tyrone Garland, No. 13 La Salle edged No. 12 Ole Miss in a thrilling third-round tilt in the West Region. With 31 seconds remaining and the score tied at 74, La Salle took possession following a shot-clock violation by Ole Miss. Marshall Henderson claimed he was fouled on that play, but no whistle came.

With the Rebels’ shot-happy gunner pulled for defensive purposes, Tyreek Duren of La Salle dribbled the ball up the floor following a timeout. His teammates spread the Ole Miss defense and Duren let the clock tick closer to zero before dribbling to his left and dishing off to Garland. The 6’1″ Philadelphia native then drove into the paint and banked in a right-handed scoop layup with 2.5 seconds remaining.

Wichita State Win: Gonzaga Upset By Shockers In NCAA Tournament

By The Huffington Post News Editors

After years of toppling Goliaths in the NCAA Tournament, Gonzaga found itself on the wrong end of an upset.

In a scintillating back-and-forth affair, No. 9 Wichita State shocked No. 1 Gonzaga, 76-70, in the third round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The Shockers took a 36-31 lead into halftime but needed to rally late after the Bulldogs went ahead midway through the second half. Ron Baker, Tekele Cotton and Cleanthony Early all sank key three-point shots as Wichita State roared toward the final buzzer. After a three-point shot by Gonzaga’s Kevin Pangos staked the Bulldogs to a 61-54 lead with 5:32 remaining, the Shockers outscored them 22-9 the rest of the way.

Wichita State advances to face the winner of Ole Miss and La Salle in the regional semifinal of the West Region.

Arizona Faces Belmont In NCAA Tournament Second Round: Predict The Winner

By The Huffington Post News Editors

UCLA wing Jordan Adams may have single-handledly shot Arizona out of the Pac-12 tournament, but the Wildcats might want to send him a nice little get-well note today.

Because Adams broke his foot on the last play of UCLA‘s 66-64 win over Arizona on Friday, the NCAA selection committee downgraded the Bruins in NCAA placement — and kept the Wildcats as the top team out of the Pac-12 — according to committee chair Mike Bobinski.

That resulted in Arizona being assigned a No. 6 NCAA tournament seed, with a first game against Belmont on Thursday at 4:20 p.m. in Salt Lake City and a placement in the West Region. That means the Cats could head to the Staples Center in Los Angeles for the Sweet 16 if they can win two games in Utah.
