WASHINGTON — Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who led the burgeoning Department of Homeland Security through a host of policy changes in the post 9/11 era, is resigning to head the University of California system.
Napolitano, just the third person to lead the 10-year-old department, told her senior staff Friday she would be leaving for California. She will become the president of the University of California system, which includes UCLA and the University of California, Berkeley, among other campuses. The University of California also announced Napolitano’s nomination to be the 20th president of the statewide system.
“The opportunity to work with the dedicated men and women of the Department of Homeland Security, who serve on the front lines of our nation’s efforts to protect our communities and families from harm, has been the highlight of my professional career,” she said in a statement. “After four plus years of focusing on these challenges, I will be nominated as the next president of the University of California to play a role in educating our nation’s next generation of leaders.”
“I thank President Obama for the chance to serve our nation during this important chapter in our history,” Napolitano said, “and I know the Department of Homeland Security will continue to perform its important duties with the honor and focus that the American public expects.”
Obama issued a statement commending Napolitano for “her outstanding work on behalf of the American people over the last four years.”

Two kinds of cells, the inner and outer hair cells, work together to transduce mechanical vibrations into action potentials. Sound energy is detected and transmitted by the inner hair cells, while properties like gain and frequency selectivity, are controlled by the mechanical adjustments of vibrating outer hair cells. The business end of these cells, known as the hair bundle, is comprised of 30 or more stereocilia, that serve as the transducers. To date, physiologists are at odds to explain how the hair bundle can respond to mechanical stimuli whose energy is an order of magnitude below the energy level of the background thermal motion. A new study from Dolores Bozovic‘s lab at UCLA takes theoretical look at the mechanical vibrations of hair cells. Their analysis, recently published in Physical Review Letters, does not close the book on the noise-busting capabilities of the hair cell system, but it does provide a framework to qualitatively describe their motion, and extend current models of their behavior.

The school’s athletic department released a statement Monday saying 18-year-old Hakop Kaplanyan (HAG’-op kuh-PLAH‘-nee-ahn) was arrested without incident April 2, the same day the woman gave the report to campus police.

It isn’t clear whether he has an attorney, and a home phone listing was not available.

City Councilman Eric Garcetti earned the endorsement of former rival Kevin James on Tuesday, giving him the backing of all of the other major candidates from the March 5 primary for his runoff mayoral campaign against City Controller Wendy Greuel.
Greuel on Tuesday, meanwhile, offered a more detailed policy rundown of her platform in a major speech on the UCLA campus, outlining plans to reduce the budget of the mayor’s office and City Council by 25 percent and establish a $50 million fund to create tech jobs.
Both candidates are seeking to differentiate themselves, firm up their bases, and attract voters before the May 21 runoff.

LOS ANGELES — The Food and Drug Administration has fast-tracked human tests of what may be the first cure for methamphetamine addiction. The drug also may be the first non-opiate drug treatment for heroin and opiate addiction.
In a trial of 11 non-treatment-seeking meth addicts, UCLA researchers administered the treatment Ibudilast, or MN-166, to some of the addicts and a placebo to others. The trial, the first of three phases of Ibudilast human testing required for FDA approval, was meant to test the safety of the drug taken in combination with meth. Researchers said the treatment appears to have passed the safety test and eased the addiction.
“Very preliminary results would indicate that Ibudilast may dampen craving and improve cognitive functioning,” said Dr. Aimee Swanson, co-investigator on the trial and research director at the UCLA Center for Behavioral and Addiction Medicine.
