Jim Larranaga Named AP Coach Of The Year In Second Season At Miami

ATLANTA — Jim Larranaga, who led Miami to the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season and tournament titles and a No. 2 ranking, has been selected The Associated Press’ coach of the year.

Larranaga received 29 votes Thursday from the same 65-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25. Jim Crews of Saint Louis got 19 votes and Mark Few of Gonzaga had 11. The voting ended on Selection Sunday.

ARLINGTON, Texas — SEC champion Florida is going to its third straight NCAA regional final, while the improbable tournament journey for Florida Gulf Coast is over.

The Eagles, the No. 15 seed few people even knew of on Selection Sunday, had their season ended just before midnight Friday with a 62-50 loss to one of the big schools from Florida.

After 52 games, the field of 68 teams in the 2013 NCAA Tournament has been narrowed to 16.

In a typically mad stretch of March, the unheralded Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast University earned a spot in this select group while the team atop the AP poll on Selection Sunday did not. Top-seeded Gonzaga was ousted in the third round by No. 9 Wichita State in the wild West Region. In that same section of your very likely busted bracket, No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast ousted both No. 2 Georgetown and No. 7 San Diego State.

The East Region went a bit more predictably, sending its top four seeds into the round of 16. In the Midwest, No. 1 overall seed Louisville overwhelmed its first two opponents, doing nothing to disappoint the many experts who tapped them to cut down the nets in Atlanta.

Louisville, Kansas, Indiana and Gonzaga claimed the No. 1 seeds, with the Louisville Cardinals earning the top overall seed after completing a 29-5 season out of the Big East. A tumultuous regular season was fittingly followed by another wave of upsets in the conference tournaments. After weighing the merits of all contending teams, 68 invitations to the Big Dance were handed out. The wait is over. Selection Sunday has arrived.

With the conference tournaments wrapped up and the 31 automatic bids in the 2013 NCAA Tournament clinched, it’s up to the selection committee to award the remaining 37 at-large bids. Concluding a five-day ordeal held in Indianapolis, the 10-member selection committee will reveal the 68-team bracket.
