ETC: San Jose driver arrested for racing under the influence

By Brandon Turkus

Don't Drink and Drive

Filed under: Racing, by its very nature, is a dangerous activity. It requires a high degree of concentration and focus on what the car is doing, what the track is like, and 1.2 million other tiny, constantly changing variables. And while a little liquid courage might help you win with the ladies the night before, it most certainly won’t aid you on the track. In fact, it’s probably the stupidest decision we’ve ever heard of anyone making.

Which would make a 64-year-old San Jose resident, named Leslie Charles Hunter, one of the stupidest people we’ve ever heard of. Hunter was arrested on Saturday after a race at Watsonville Ocean Speedway. The charges? Suspicion of driving under the influence and driving with a blood alcohol content level higher than 0.08 percent, according to the Santa Cruze Sentinel.

The police were called after other racers were forced off the track by Hunter’s aggressive and reckless driving during a race. Thankfully, no one was injured by this nitwit. Watsonville Ocean Speedway is a quarter-mile dirt oval. The results of Saturday’s race haven’t been posted yet, but we looked through Watsonville’s results archive and it appears that Hunter was a regular, running as Charlie Hunter (because who wouldn’t drop the name Leslie?) and routinely finishing in the bottom half of his class.

Nearly 100 cats killed in fire at California home

Nearly 100 cats died in a San Jose house fire that also nearly killed the woman who lived there.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that firefighters early Tuesday had to cut through metal netting to save the woman in her 70s who had installed the fencing to keep the cats from escaping.

The woman is a volunteer cat rescuer who cares for and neuters the felines for adoption.

She woke up to the sound of her lone dog barking after her fire alarm failed to sound and saw smoke billowing from a bedroom.

A fire dispatcher told her to stay low until crews got there and cut through the fencing that trapped her.

About six cats survived.

Apple-Samsung phone battle to hit appeals court in August

A court’s decision not to prevent multiple Samsung handsets from being sold in the U.S. despite their being found to infringe Apple patents will go before an appeal’s court in early August.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., said Monday it will hear 15 minutes of oral arguments in the case from Samsung and Apple attorneys on August 9.

The hearing comes almost a year after a jury at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in San Jose rejected arguments from Samsung and found that the company willfully set out to copy elements of Apple’s iPhone when designing hardware and software for 26 of its phones and tablets.

The case, which saw Apple awarded more than $1 billion in damages, captivated the technology industry, and the appeals process is expected to be equally closely watched.

Pixar, Lucasfilm said to settle employee no-poaching lawsuit

Pixar and Lucasfilm have settled a lawsuit by workers alleging an illegal cartel formed by seven technology companies including Apple, Google and Intel, lawyers have informed the court.

The class counsels have informed the court in a letter that a settlement was reached, Judge Lucy Koh of U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose division wrote in an order on Sunday.

Details of the settlement were not mentioned. The parties expect completing documentation of the proposed settlement and will submit it for court approval “in the near future,” according to the letter to the judge on Friday.

Five engineers alleged in the lawsuit, individually and on behalf of a class of all those similarly situated, that Adobe Systems, Apple, Google, Intel, Intuit, Lucasfilm and Pixar, all high-tech companies with principal place of business in the San Francisco-Silicon Valley area of California, were involved in an “overarching conspiracy” to fix and suppress employee compensation. The companies are alleged to have restricted employee mobility by setting up “Do Not Call” lists and putting each firm’s employees off-limits to the other companies.

How to seek help to replace air conditioning indoor blower motor?

By jgy2001

I have a Trane XE 1200 central air conditioner with gas furnace. I am in San Jose, CA area.
The indoor blower motor is getting quite noisy lately. Originally, this blower motor was supposed to have two speed, and run normally in slow speed. But the installer made it only run on high speed most of time, except when the air conditioning is turning off, and slow speed kick in for the last 20 seconds. Now the blower is rattling noisily. What should I do to find out more so that I can seek contractor to replace with another quieter motor?

Lawyer: Girl's assault was shared in photos, texts

The parents of a 15-year-old California girl who took her own life after she was sexually abused and an explicit photo of the assault circulated among her classmates want the three boys who have been arrested in the case prosecuted as adults, a lawyer for the family says.

Authorities arrested the three 16-year-olds on suspicion of sexual battery against Audrie Pott, a Saratoga High School sophomore who hanged herself in September. The arrests this week shocked many in this prosperous Silicon Valley suburb of 30,000 as new details of the case emerged.

“We’re talking about, other than murdering someone, the highest degree of a crime you could possibly do, which is to violate them in the worst of ways…and then to effectively rub her face in it afterwards,” Robert Allard, the attorney representing the teenager’s mother, father and step-mother, said Friday.

But lawyers for the three boys, whose names have not been released because they are minors, released a statement Friday asking the public to withhold judgment until their clients can give their side of the story, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

“Much of what has been reported over the last several days is inaccurate. Most disturbing is the attempt to link (Audrie’s) suicide to the specific actions of these three boys,” the statement from San Jose attorneys Eric Geffon, Alan Lagod and Benjamin Williams reads. “We are hopeful that everyone understands that these boys, none of whom have ever been in trouble with the law, are to be regarded as innocent.”

Allard said the trouble started over Labor Day weekend while Audrie was on a sleepover at a friend’s house where the parents were gone and the unaccompanied teens got into the liquor.

“Audrie, by all accounts, consumed some of that alcohol and eventually went upstairs to go to sleep and woke up to the worst nightmare imaginable,” concluding that she had been molested, he said.

She soon found an abundance of material online about that night, including a picture and emails. She also discovered that her attackers were three boys she considered friends — young men in whom she had confided, the lawyer said. On Facebook, Audrie wrote that the whole school knew what happened, and she complained that her life was ruined, Allard said.

Eight days after the party, she hanged herself.

Trey Burke, Michael Carter-Williams Battle At Heart Of Syracuse-Michigan Final Four Matchup

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Most basketball coaches will tell you that winning comes down to either of two things: execution and whether or not a team makes its shots. Well, matchups often determine both of those things, so it’s only fitting for us to examine two crucial matchups between the University of Michigan and Syracuse teams.

Mitch McGary and Glenn Robinson III vs. Syracuse Bigs

Michigan’s freshman bigs have been terrific, especially McGary, who has been a double-double machine of late and is shooting 73 percent on 2-pointers during the tournament, per ESPN. But handling the length and sheer size of the ‘Cuse front court is quite a task. One Western Conference scout recently told me he was “very surprised” by the size of Syracuse’s players after seeing them in San Jose.
