Ohio State vs. Wichita State LIVE UPDATES: Elite Eight Matchup In West Region

Wichita State better hope its Elite Eight matchup with Ohio State doesn’t come down to the final seconds. The Buckeyes have already had plenty of practice — and success — in those situations already.

No. 2 Ohio State reached the final of the West Region thanks to a pair of late game-winning shots. Aaron Craft sank Iowa State in the Round of 32. LaQuinton Ross sent Arizona home in the Sweet 16.

In the wildest region of the bracket, Thad Matta‘s team faces the Shockers of Wichita State with a spot in the Final Four up for grabs. No. 9 Wichita State shocked No. 1 Gonzaga in the third round and then overwhelmed No. 13 La Salle in the Sweet 16.

No. 2 Ohio State will take on No. 9 Wichita State in the West Regional final on Saturday with a spot in the Final Four on the line.

The Buckeyes needed a game-winning shot in the final seconds of each of their last two games, but Aaron Craft and LaQuinton Ross delivered in wins over Iowa State and Arizona. Ohio State will take on the Cinderella squad from Wichita State that shocked the top seed in the region.

The Shockers of Wichita State rolled over No. 9 Pittsburgh in their tournament opener and then upset No. 1 Gonzaga to reach the Sweet 16. With Malcolm Armstead and Carl Hall pacing the attack, Wichita State dispatched La Salle without much trouble to set up a date with Ohio State on Saturday, March 30 at 7:05 p.m EST in Los Angeles.

Olympian Lisa Uhl to Make Competitive Debut in Chicago at 2013 Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K

USATF National Club Team 8 km Championships to Feature Country’s Top Teams

CHICAGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)– The Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K today announced that U.S. Olympian Lisa Uhl will lace up her racing shoes for her first competition in Chicago. Uhl, along with fellow Team USA member Dathan Ritzenhein, will lead the way for 40,000 runners in Chicago’s 34th annual kickoff to the running season on Sunday, April 7.

“Lisa is a rising star in the sport, and the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K is a great opportunity for her to test herself on a flat and fast course that is home to the women’s 8K American record,” said Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski. “Coming from neighboring Iowa, she has trained hard throughout the winter and is ready to ring in the spring racing season along with the rest of the Chicago running community.”

Uhl finished 13th in the 10,000-meters in her first Olympic appearance at the 2012 London Games. She first drew international attention in 2010 by running a NCAA collegiate record and world-leading 10,000m time of 31:18.07 as a senior at Iowa State University. She wrapped up her collegiate career with four national track titles, including a rare 5,000m/10,000m double at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, becoming one of only four athletes to have ever done so.

As a professional, Uhl has run personal bests of 31:12.80 for 10,000-meters and 14:55.74 for 5,000-meters, ranking her sixth and seventh, respectively, on the all-time U.S. list. She is sponsored by Nike and currently resides in Ames, Iowa, where she is a volunteer assistant coach for her alma mater and is coached by Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels.

“I am extremely excited to hit the roads at the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K,” said Uhl. “I have always been in love with the energy of Chicago. Not only am I looking forward to testing my fitness on a fast course, but I am thrilled to be part of such a fun Chicago tradition.”

The 2013 Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K will be Uhl’s first competition in Chicago.

Florida Gulf Coast, Wichita State, La Salle Show NCAA Tournament Seeding No Longer Matters

If the NCAA Tournament’s opening weekend taught us anything, it’s that the difference between a No. 1 or 2 seed and a 9 seed, let alone a 14 or 15 seed, is minuscule. Parity clearly rules in college basketball. Though pessimists might say the game is “watered down,” the lack of one elite team (with all due respect to Rick Pitino’s Louisville Cardinals) and the abundance of very good teams both have become more apparent and made the tournament more engaging.

Florida Gulf Coast University and its up-tempo, transition-based attack dominated Georgetown in the second half in the second round and did the same to San Diego State in the third. Wichita State‘s seven straight triples buried Gonzaga (which barely held on against Southern University in the round of 64), and Harvard controlled powerful New Mexico with the long ball as well. Ohio State, playing a de facto home game in Dayton, needed what was at best a questionable charge call to overcome a furious rally from Iowa State in the round of 32. Even Indiana barely survived a nearly fatal scare from 9 seed Temple on Sunday, during a game in which the Owls led by four with less than 3 minutes remaining.

Is this not the beauty of the tournament, though? Is this not why we love March with such conviction?

Aaron Craft Charge: Was Iowa State Robbed By Controversial Call? (PHOTO/POLL)

Aaron Craft’s game-winning shot wasn’t the only play he made that had everyone talking after Ohio State edged Iowa State in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Not long before his game-winning shot, the junior guard was involved in a controversial play that left some, notably Charles Barkley, thinking that the refs had robbed the Cyclones of a spot in the Sweet 16.

With Iowa State leading 75-74 with just 1:41 remaining, Cyclones guard Will Clyburn drove past Sam Thompson and Deshaun Thomas toward the rim. While in the air, Clyburn collided with Craft, who had positioned himself in his path. The driving shot dropped through the net, a whistle sounded. To the dismay of Clyburn and Iowa State, an offensive foul was called on the play. Rather than calling a block and sending Clyburn to the line to add to the ISU advantage, officials waived off the basket and gave the ball to Ohio State. The Buckeyes would tie the game on the ensuing possession and Craft would eventually hit the game-winner in the final second.

“I feel bad because the referees blew the call plain and simple,” Barkley said after the game during the postgame studio coverage on CBS. Like many, Barkley believed that officials should have called a blocking foul against Craft rather than a charge on Clyburn.

The No. 2 seed Ohio State Buckeyes will face No. 10 seed Iowa State in the third round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament in the West Region.

Sam Thompson scored 20 points as Ohio State dominated Iona in the second round, outscoring the Gaels 95-70. The Buckeyes advance to the next round rolling high on a nine-game winning streak. They’ll be joined by Iowa State, who rolled past Notre Dame in a 7-10 upset.

The winner in this matchup on March 24 will advance to the Sweet 16.

Iowa State Dismantles Notre Dame 76-58 In NCAA Tournament Second Round

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — After spending most of the season doing damage from outside the 3-point line, Iowa State moved inside for its first game in the NCAA tournament.

The Cyclones didn’t look out of place at all.

Freshman forward Georges Niang matched a season high with 19 points and Melvin Ejim added 17 as Iowa State, showing there’s a whole lot more than just 3-pointers in its arsenal, dismantled Notre Dame 76-58 on Friday night in the West Regional.

Harkin cuts ties with namesake Iowa State center

Sen. Tom Harkin is abandoning plans to donate his papers to a namesake institute at Iowa State University, his alma mater.

Harkin said in a letter Tuesday that he believed Iowa State leaders were trying to restrict the Harkin Institute of Public Policy’s ability to conduct some research, which they deny.

He says he agrees with its advisory board that “these proposals have damaged the institute to such an extent that it would never be able to flourish at Iowa State.”

Harkin says he and his family will decide where papers covering his 30 years in the Senate and 10 in the House end up. He says he regrets the institute didn’t work out.

The withdrawal comes after a power struggle between Harkin supporters and university leaders.
