Weekend Box Office: 'The Conjuring' Startles With Record-Breaking $41 Million

It’s a little bizarre that we would call a 2.44x weekend multiplier “exceptional”, but horror films are of course famously front-loaded.  Nonetheless, The Conjuring didn’t completely collapse over the weekend and as such set a new record for an original R-rated horror movie.  The $20 million 70’s-set possession thriller earned a whopping $41.5 million over its debut frame.  Among openings for anything that could reasonably be classified as “horror”, it trails only Paranormal Activity 3 ($52 million) and Hannibal ($58 million). If you want to count horror-tinged thrillers or horror sci-fi, toss in I Am Legend ($77 million), World War Z ($66 million), War of the Worlds ($64 million), Signs ($60 million), and The Village ($50 million) as among the few to have higher debuts in this genre. As for the “why”, this is a case of solid marketing, along with a series of word-of-mouth screenings starting with last months’ Los Angeles Film Festival that helped sell the film’s genuine quality. …read more

Paranormal Activity 5 Delayed Until 2014?

Paramount may be pushing back the release date of Paranormal Activity 5, the latest installment in its popular horror franchise.

The Wrap reports that PA5, which is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 25, could be delayed until next year. One Paramount source reportedly claimed the studio “had already decided to move Paranormal, while another cautioned that the studio was still debating the move.” That insider said Paramount is considering moving the release to January 6, the same weekend as The Devil Inside in 2012.

A Haunted House Sequel

It looks like A Haunted House will be continuing its parody of the Paranormal Activity movies.

THR says that Open Road Films recently acquired the distribution rights to A Haunted House sequel, which will star and be co-written by Marlon Wayans. Filming is scheduled to begin this summer.

The first A Haunted House, which had a production budget of $2.5 million, opened to $18.1 million in January. It has since earned $40 million at the domestic box office.

Paranormal Activity 4 Blu-ray Review

Directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman return to the Paranormal Activity franchise with a new tale of ghostly intervention. In this fourth installment, we pick up where the second film left off, five years after the disappearance of Katie (Katie Featherston) and her nephew Hunter. Now, Katie has reemerged in Henderson, Nevada, where she moves into a house across the street from teenager Alex (Kathryn Newton) and her family. When Alex takes notice of strange occurrences at home, she begins to suspect that her new neighbors may have something to do with it. Soon, she embarks on a documented investigation, along with the help of her good friend Ben (Matt Shively).

As far as the structure is concerned, Paranormal Activity 4 isn’t that much different from its predecessors, and it’s basically all the same schtick: moving doors, swinging chandeliers, levitating bodies — the usual fare. But the creators do a good job of bringing something new to the table with each passing film. In PA2 it was security cameras, in PA3 it was oscillating cameras and in PA4, we now have the addition of modern technology.

Paranormal 2 Director to Helm Stephen King's Cell

Cargo Entertainment has now tapped Paranormal Activity 2 helmer Tod “Kip” Williams to direct the feature adaptation of Stephen King’s Cell, starring John Cusack.

Screen Daily reports that King has already co-written the script with House at the End of the Street scribe Adam Alleca. The story centers on a graphic artist who attempts to reach his wife and son after a devastating pulse transmits through a mobile phone network.

“Tod is a dynamic filmmaker whose work has been both critically acclaimed and commercially successful,” said Cargo CEO Marina Grasic in a statement. “He brings a unique and exciting vision to Cell that will appeal to audiences worldwide.”

AHS, Paranormal Producers' Killer Remake

The producers of American Horror Story and Paranormal Activity are teaming up for MGM‘s remake of the 1976 cult classic The Town That Dreaded Sundown.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, AHS‘s Ryan Murphy and Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum will produce the remake with Alfonso Gomez-Rejon being lined up to direct. Playwright-screenwriter Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (the upcoming Carrie remake) will pen the script.

“MGM is aiming to produce the remake on a low budget and keep the original’s cinema verite style. The remake is said to have horror-movie tones and elements of a procedural in the vein of David Fincher’s Zodiac,” claims THR.

A Haunted House Review

Ever since Abbott and Costello spoofed monster flicks in the 1940’s, the parody film has delivered plenty of memorable movies. Blazing Saddles, Monty Python and The Holy Grail, and Airplane! made smart observations about film genres, mixed with some truly silly moments. These days, however, the spoof movie is sadly missing the element of satire.

Co-written by and starring Marlon Wayans, A Haunted House pokes fun at the subgenre of the found footage horror movie in the vein of Paranormal Activity, The Devil Inside, etc. These films seem perfect for spoofing, with their low-fi look and focus on demonic possession. Unfortunately, instead of trying to poke fun at the clichés within those films, A Haunted House goes for cheap laughs instead.
