Video: Behind the scenes of a car rollover stunt

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

With Transformers 4, Fast & Furious 7 and Need for Speed bringing hundreds of millions of dollars of carnage to the Summer of 2014 – and Getaway coming next month – we should probably start learning our car-stunt grammar. We can start with this behind-the-scenes video of a car rollover stunt that provides more that ten minutes of detailed info on each part of the process.

The star – after stunt driver Tom Harper and that Crown Vic – is the air ram that takes just 1.1 seconds to propel and retract a giant ‘foot’ onto the ground to get the car flipping. It is apparently Harper’s own design and supplants the cannon system that launches a projectile in order to launch the car. You can watch Harper and crew explain it all in the video below.

Fast and Furious 6 not out yet, but next installment already has a release date

By Zach Bowman

Fast & Furious 6

Filed under:

Good news, Fast & Furious fans. The cast of the sixth installment of the street-racing film franchise recently took the stage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas to preview a few more clips from the newest installment of the franchise and answer a handful of fan questions.

More importantly, Vin Diesel confirmed that we won’t have to wait very long for the next installment. Diesel said, “The next one, which is probably going to be the biggest one of all, is going to be in theaters on July 11, 2014.”

That puts Fast & Furious 7 out just a year after Fast & Furious 6 hits theaters. James Wan is set to direct number seven with both Neal H. Moritz and Diesel staying on as producers. Beyond that, details are scarce, with no word on the plot or the cast. Stay tuned for more info, and check out the latest trailer for Fast & Furious 6 below.

Fast 6 Chase Sequence Wows CinemaCon

Universal left their biggest summer 2013 release until last at their presentation today at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The studio showed an extended sequence from the middle of Fast & Furious 6 to the auditorium full of theater executives, exhibitors and press, an action-packed chase scene previously highlighted in some of the movie’s trailers. Fast 6 opens May 24.

Some spoilers follow, but if you’ve seen the trailers then it’s nothing you didn’t already know.

The sequence takes place midway through the film and follows Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew’s attempt to foil bad guy Owen Shaw’s (Luke Evans) hijacking of a military convoy on a desert highway. As you surely know by now, Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) is not dead after all and is instead part of Shaw’s crew. This puts her on a literal collision course with her former lover Vin.

Fast 7 Release Date Announced

Earlier today at CinemaCon, Vin Diesel announced that Fast & Furious 7 will be hitting theaters on July 11, 2014.

IGN‘s own Jim Vejvoda was on the scene, reporting from Vegas. As of right now, no other film is scheduled for that day, although Fast 7 does open one week after Disney’s Maleficent and the week before Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.

James Wan is directing the seventh entry in the action series, with Diesel and Paul Walker set to star. But first up is Fast 6, which debuts stateside on May 24.

Max Nicholson is a writer for IGN, and he desperately seeks your approval. Show him some love by following @Max_Nicholson on Twitter, or MaxNicholson on IGN.

'The Hangover 3' vs. 'Fast & Furious 6' in Summer 2013's Dumbest Movie Face-Off

By Scott Mendelson, Contributor

Coming off relatively successful prior installments, both The Hangover part III and Fast and Furious 6 could arguably be expected to secure two of the bigger opening weekends of the summer 2013 season. The Hangover part III opened with $85 million over its Fri-Sun portion of its Memorial Day weekend 2011 debut, pulling in a total of $137 million over its Thursday-to-Monday debut, good for the second-best five-day total and Fri-Sun total for an R-rated film (behind the $144 million five-day total and $91 million Fri-Sun debut of The Matrix Reloaded). Fast Five opened with $86 million during the last weekend of April 2011, a record for an April debut and the largest Fri-Sun opening in Universal’s history. Both films earned over $200 million domestic and well-over $500 million worldwide. The sheer goodwill for Fast Five sets Fast & Furious 6 up for a monster debut under normal circumstances. And if critics and (to a lesser extent) audiences felt that The Hangover part II was basically a warmed-over remake of The Hangover, the promise if both a very different kind of plot and the fact that this is absolutely the finale of this particular trilogy arguably compensates with most of the burn out from part II. So yeah, under normal circumstances, both of these films targeted mostly young men would be on course for sky-high debuts. Except these are not normal circumstances. Both of these films are opening on the exact same day, over this upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

Saw Director for Fast 7

With Justin Lin stepping down from the Fast & Furious franchise after directing four consecutive films in the series, including this summer’s Fast & Furious 6, Universal has been on the prowl for a new helmer to steer the upcoming seventh movie. And now they seem to have found their man with Insidious and Saw director James Wan.

Deadline reports that the studio has begun negotiations with Wan to helm Fast & Furious 7, with a deal expected to be made this week. Good for Wan — he deserves the chance to scale up with a project (and he’s actually a really nice guy too).

Justin Lin Won't Direct Fast & Furious 7

It was announced today that Justin Lin is finally stepping down from the Fast & Furious franchise and will no longer be directing Fast 7.

According to THR, the filmmaker informed Universal late Wednesday that he wouldn’t be returning for the latest installment of the popular action series. Lin has been the studio’s go-to director for the films ever since 2006’s The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

Lin’s departure reportedly has nothing to do with creative differences, but rather time issues. With Universal putting The Fast and the Furious 7 on the fast track to release next year and shoot this summer, Lin would have to prep for filming while simultaneously continuing post-production on Fast & Furious 6, which is slated for a May 24 release.

‘Fast & Furious 7’ May Be In The Works Soon As Vin Diesel Teases Plans

By The Huffington Post News Editors

With months until the release of “Fast & Furious 6,” Universal may already have plans for a seventh film in the ongoing franchise.

“Fast Six” star Vin Diesel posted a photo of himself to Facebook on Saturday with a caption reading, “There was an early screening in LA this week of ‘Fast 6.’ The crowd reaction was surreal… and their demand for the continuation was powerful.”

Diesel teased plans for an upcoming “Fast & Furious 7” by adding, “It’s remarkable to think I first embodied this character in 1999… and the evolution continues… Filming begins this summer in LA, where it all started… talk about a studio in sync with the audience.”

The Rock Might Get a Fast & Furious Spin-Off

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson says that there could “possibly” be a spin-off movie for his popular Luke Hobbs character that debuted in Fast Five.

Given how Fast Five brought in the biggest box office for the franchise to date — an impressive $209,837,675 global gross compared to the $155,064,265 intake of second place Fast and Furious — it’s clear his presence is a draw for audiences.

Johnson went on to say that if it did happen, the film would hit theaters sometime before Fast & Furious 7.

What the movie would be about is anyone’s guess. A buddy cop film with Gina “Haywire” Carano (who plays his partner in Fast & Furious 6) could be fun, while a more desperate thriller that turns Hobbs into a car thief himself might also work.

Exclusive: Getting to know the cars of Fast & Furious 6

By Michael Harley

Filed under:

The team at Universal Pictures recently invited us check out the real stars – the machinery – of its upcoming action thriller Fast & Furious 6, due in theaters on May 24. On hand at the studio special effects facility were more than a dozen vehicles, each with its own unique story to tell.

Giving us special insight to the logistical nightmare of coordinating the 300-400 vehicles consumed during filming (sadly, nearly all were destroyed) was Dennis McCarthy, the film’s Picture Car Coordinator. McCarthy, a true car guy, explained the difficulty of turning a street car into a Fast & Furious celebrity. Aside from the obvious safety upgrades to keep the stunt crews secure, engines are often upgraded (the small-block LS3 from General Motors is the team’s jack-of-all-trades), differentials welded and slide brakes fitted (allowing precise control of the rear calipers to induce drift). The cars are mostly all modified in the States, and then shipped to shooting locations around the globe.

Eye candy such as the heavily customized 1969 Dodge Daytona (pictured above) is even more impressive up close, when you realize that its side pipes required the entire exhaust system to be packaged within the confines of the passenger compartment. The team purchased seven Euro Mark I Ford Escorts, a celebrated 1970s-era rally car complete with stock fender flares, but only one made it through filming. We were drawn to the LS7-powered Lister, with with its bright livery and 1,800-pound curb weight, but our favorite turned out to be the new three-passenger Flip Car. The one-off handcrafted vehicle features a 500-horsepower LS3 running through a V-drive from a boat with the rear steering mechanism of a monster truck. Simply badass, even if it’s not even remotely street legal.

If you have specific questions about any of the vehicles after clicking through the gallery (all of the images have been labeled to ease identification), post them in Comments.

Fast & Furious: The Joy of Six

“Anything that reaches a sixth version,” declares actor Luke Evans on the set of the new Fast & Furious instalment, “has to be doing something right.” Hmm. Really? Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country? Decent, but hardly bold new Trekkie territory. Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare? Only for fans mourning Elm Street’s depreciation. Police Academy, Halloween, Saw… 6, 6, 6 – truly the number of the beast.

Any exceptions? Harry Potter, sure, albeit underpinned by the books’ phenomenal fanbase. Perhaps even the freak occurrence of Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning. But, almost inevitably, series that rack up multiple episodes without a face-saving/changing reboot (Bond, Bourne, every other superhero), in their desperation to squeeze the last cents from the shrivelled udders of a knackered cash cow, end up artistically and commercially bankrupt.
