Saints Row 4 Had President Colbert, Dragons

In the original version of Saints Row IV, you did not play as the President of the United States.

“We wanted Stephen Colbert to be the President,” Volition creative director Steve Jaros tells IGN. “I have concept art that’s amazing. It’s Stephen Colbert on a battlefield holding the American flag, his sleeves are ripped off, he’s got a bald eagle tattoo. That’s Steven Jr.” he says. “It was badass,but finally it was like, f**k it, you’re the President. Why give it to someone else?”

Numerous things changed between the initial Saints Row IV concept and what we have now. Stephen Colbert as the President of the United States of America is the least crazy of the lot.

Saints Row 4 is Your United States of Whatever

It can’t be easy being in charge of a game series that’s built its reputation on extreme absurdity. After you’ve done missions on mars, excrement-spraying, gigantic purple dildo-bats, Professor Genki’s Super Ethical Reality Climax and all the many, many other ridiculous things that Saints Row 2 and 3 delighted in, and you’ve elevated the player to the most (in)famous person on Earth, where else is there left to go?

The answer for Saints Row 4 is to make you President of the United States, give you superpowers, and introduce a huge-scale alien invasion of Earth. Transporting you to a bizarre version of Steelport in a huge alien-technology-powered simulation, Saints Row 4 wants you to save the world – or just screw with it for fun. Visually, it looks extremely similar to Saints Row the Third, the primary difference being that you’re shooting at aliens rather than rival gang members and cops. And that you can fly, and run at super-speeds, and lift up cars with your mind.

Saints Row IV Release Date and Debut Trailer

The speculation was true: Saints Row 4 will be coming to PC and current-gen consoles (that doesn’t include Wii U) on August 20th in the US and August 23rd in other territories.

To get a sense of the game’s new somber, gritty approach brace yourself for the debut trailer below:

Yeah, that’s a lot to process: robots, guitar case guns, super powers, and Tron-style light cycles. The trailer also refers to the game as “the climactic chapter of the Saga that changed all the rules”.

This time around the game is being published by Deep Silver, which acquired the rights for the popular franchise and its developer Volition after former owner THQ dissolved earlier in the year.

Saints Row 4 Could Come as Soon as August

Saints Row 4 could be headed to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this August, rather than on the next-generation consoles expected to launch this fall. Publisher Deep Silver, who picked up the property following the dissolution of THQ, has yet to confirm any details.

Saints Row, Company of Heroes, Darksiders Devs Acquired

Following THQ’s auction of its assets, the new homes of THQ franchises are slowly being revealed. According to multiple IGN sources as well as reports circulating on Twitter, Koch Media, Take-Two, Ubisoft and SEGA are among the new owners of THQ’s intellectual property and studios.

SEGA has reportedly acquired Relic, developer of Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War.

Koch Media (owner of Dead Island publisher Deep Silver) has reportedly agreed to purchase Saints Row developer Volition as well as the publishing rights to the Metro franchise.
