Official: Seat Leon ST longroof revealed

By Damon Lowney

Filed under:

Seat has officially unveiled the Leon ST – the first estate/wagon version of the Leon ever offered – which expands the third-generation Leon and Leon SC lineup that went on sale last year.

With the introduction of the ST (Sport Touring) comes driver-assistance technology new to the Leon range, including adaptive cruise control, adaptive chassis control and progressive steering. But the main reason you’d opt for the estate is probably for its cargo capacity, which starts at 20.7 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and stretches to 51.9 cubic feet when they’re folded down. Seat did a good job keeping the Leon’s identity after revising it into wagon form, but despite the ST’s clean lines, it comes very close to looking like a small minivan to our eyes. Perhaps that opinion will change after we view the new wagon in person.

Volkswagen-owned Seat uses the Golf’s chassis for the Leon series, as well as VW engines. Seat claims the ST was designed with fuel efficiency in mind, and its light weight (for a wagon, at least) of 2,718 pounds for the base model and range of small, direct-injected, turbocharged petrol and diesel engines support that claim. Engines range from 1.2 to 2.0 liters in size and have between 104 and 182 horsepower. All told, Seat claims the Leon ST with the worst fuel efficiency will still net drivers a stellar 53.3 miles per gallon on average, using the European cycle.

Since Seat doesn’t sell cars in the US, you’ll have to wait for the next VW Jetta SportWagen if you want something like this Leon ST package. For more details, check out Seat’s press release below.

New Molded M12 Right-Angle Connectors from Belden’s Lumberg Automation Brand Have 360° Shielding

Reliable data transmission even in extremely demanding environments

ST. LOUIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Belden Inc., a global leader in signal transmission solutions for mission-critical applications, has extended its Lumberg Automation product program in the Americas region to include new molded M12 male and female right-angle connectors with 360° shielding. These connectors permit the reliable transmission of analog and digital data, even in environments with strong electromagnetic fields. The connectors are available as either single-ended or double-ended cordsets for actuators/sensors, PROFIBUS and Ethernet cables, and connection cables. The angular design of the connectors facilitates quick installations, even where space is at a premium.

Product features include an operating temperature range of -25 °C to +85 °C, high shock and vibration resistance, and IP67, IP68 and IP69K ratings approvals. Capable of withstanding high-pressure/steam-jet cleaning, the male and female connectors can be used even in the harshest environmental conditions. Already including straight connectors with 360 degree shielding, the Lumberg Automation program can now provide an ideal M12 connection cable for actuators/sensors, passive distributors or PROFIBUS/Ethernet modules in almost any installation scenario.

For these new 360° shielded connectors, actuator/sensor connection cables can be obtained with four, five or eight poles. Depending on the version, the rated voltage is 30, 60 or 240 V AC/DC and the rated current is 4 or 8 A. Insulation resistance is >109 Ω for all versions. The connectors for PROFIBUS and Ethernet cordsets and connection cables are B or D coded, and have a rated current of 4 A and a rated voltage of 60 or 240 V AC/DC.

The molded body and housing are made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The insert is either of the same material (PROFIBUS cordsets) or polybutylene terephthalate (PBT). The contacts are gold plated. The molded cables, made of PUR or PVC, are available in lengths of 2, 5, 10 and 15 meters. Other lengths are available on request.

According to Lumberg Automation Product Manager Hiyam Wakeem, product manager for Lumberg Automation, “For restricted space applications, these new right-angle connectors provide an efficient solution. The cables also stand up to the harshest environmental conditions with their patented shielding solution especially in EMC sensitive areas.”

Ecolab Reaches Consent Agreement with U.S. Department of Justice on Champion Acquisition

Ecolab expects to close on Champion purchase in the next several days

Acquisition will strengthen Ecolab’s position in fast-growing energy services market

ST. PAUL, Minn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Ecolab Inc. announced today that it has entered into a consent agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), which has been filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia. As a result, Ecolab expects to complete the Champion acquisition within the next several days.

The consent agreement with the DOJ requires Ecolab to take certain steps designed to ensure continued independent competition utilizing Champion technology for deepwater Gulf of Mexico energy services. The steps include divesting, to a suitable third party, Champion patented technology related to a single product used in the Deepwater Gulf of Mexico, licensing certain other Champion deepwater chemistry to the third party for use in the Deepwater Gulf of Mexico, providing an option to the third party to purchase a Champion chemical blending facility, manufacturing relevant products for the third party for a limited period and enabling the third party to recruit certain Champion employees needed to support the business. Importantly, the consent agreement impacts only about 3% of Champion’s business. Also, going forward Ecolab will continue to be able to serve customers in the Deepwater Gulf of Mexico region utilizing the Nalco team and technology.

Douglas M. Baker, Jr., Ecolab’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer commented on the announcement, saying, “We are pleased to have reached an agreement with the DOJ on this matter. We also remain very excited about the potential of this transaction. The reasons we were attracted to Champion in the first place remain solidly in place. Champion strengthens our position in the fast-growing oil and gas services industry. It bolsters our ability to better serve customers by bringing important and complementary geographic and technology strengths to our Global Energy business – particularly in the upstream production area – and enables us to more fully capitalize on the significant developing oil and gas market opportunities. In addition, we expect that it will provide attractive earnings accretion, adding approximately $0.07 to 2013 earnings per share and rising to $0.50 by 2016.

Ten Federally Qualified Health Centers Collaborate with State to Improve Health Outcomes, Reduce Costs in Minnesota Medicaid Program

  • As part of the state’s innovative payment reform effort, FUHN will be responsible for meeting quality and cost benchmarks for about 22,000 Medicaid beneficiaries
  • Optum to provide analytical and predictive modeling capabilities, consulting expertise, and population health management specialists

ST. PAUL, Minn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Ten federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) in the Twin Cities area have formed a coalition to collaborate with the state to improve care and reduce costs for nearly 22,000 Medicaid beneficiaries in Minnesota.

Under terms of the contract with the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS), the Federally Qualified Health Center Urban Health Network (FUHN) will be responsible for meeting DHS-established quality and cost benchmarks for Medicaid patients, and will be eligible to share in cost-savings it achieves during a three-year contract period.

Known as an accountable care organization (ACO), the FUHN model – one of the nation’s first “safety net” ACOs – is one component in Minnesota’s Medicaid Health Care Delivery System (HCDS) demonstration project, a payment reform effort aimed at improving Medicaid outcomes and reducing costs by focusing on integrated and coordinated patient care.

To help achieve its goals, FUHN has partnered with Optum, an Eden Prairie-based health care services and technology company. FUHN and Optum have invested time and resources to develop a care coordination model that emphasizes population health management and increased patient engagement. The model relies on data analytics and the deployment of predictive modeling software, which Optum is providing to FUHN as a component of the collaboration.

“This contract represents a fundamental shift in our relationship with the state, and in our relationship with each other, to better serve Medicaid beneficiaries,” said Dr. Jaeson Fournier, chief executive officer of West Side Community Health Services in St. Paul and chairperson of FUHN. “These 10 FQHCs have come together as FUHN to deliver better, more integrated care to those we serve. Optum’s financial commitment to our project, its health care and Medicaid knowledge, and its technical expertise will support FUHN in achieving its goals of increasing patient satisfaction, improving patient health care outcomes, and reducing the total …read more

Revolutionary War battlefield lies beneath future ballpark village site

By hnn

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Even life-long St. Louis residents may not realize that a big battle was once fought on what is now the site of Ballpark Village, which is in the early stages of development just north of Busch Stadium.

Interestingly, this wasn’t a conflict during the U.S. Civil War, but the Revolutionary War.

The “Battle of St. Louis” — also known as the “Battle of Fort San Carlos” — took place in May 1780, and downtown looked much different 233 years ago.

“The early French city of St. Louis had a wall that enclosed it on three sides, and the fourth side was the Mississippi River,” notes Michael Fuller, history professor at St. Louis Community College-Meramec and one of the foremost experts on the battle….

Ecolab Announces Extension of Champion Close Timing

Closing presently expected to occur before April 15

ST. PAUL, Minn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Ecolab Inc. expects the closing of the previously announced acquisition of Champion Technologies will be delayed beyond March 31 but is expected to occur before April 15. We continue to have productive discussions with the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding our filing under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976 (the “HSR Act”) with respect to the Champion transaction. Discussions with the DOJ have progressed, and we believe the likely resolution will not meaningfully impact the strategic value and economics that originally compelled us to make this acquisition.

While we are confident that we will successfully conclude the transaction, it remains possible that the transaction will not be completed on the timing discussed or at all.

Results of St. Jude Medical’s RESPECT Trial Published in The NewEngland Journal of Medicine

Eight-year study confirms PFO closure was superior to medical therapy alone in reducing risk of recurrent stroke in prespecified per-protocol and as-treated cohorts

ST. PAUL, Minn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– St. Jude Medical, Inc. (NYS: STJ) , a global medical device company, today announced publication of results from its landmark RESPECT trial in The New England Journal of Medicine. The study results show that device closure using the AMPLATZER™ PFO Occluder is superior to antiplatelet medications or warfarin in preventing recurrent cryptogenic stroke (a stroke from an unknown cause) in patients with a common heart defect called a patent foramen ovale (PFO), as measured in the prespecified per-protocol and as-treated patient cohorts of the trial. Patients in the study had a 51 to 73 percent risk reduction in recurrent strokes when evaluated across prespecified measures.

Photo of AMPLATZER PFO Occluder. (Photo: St. Jude Medical, Inc.)

Normal in a developing fetus, the foramen ovale allows oxygenated blood from the placenta to bypass the lungs. This small, flap-like opening typically closes shortly after birth. When this flap remains open, or patent, it is referred to as a PFO. A PFO can potentially allow dangerous clots to pass from the right side of the heart to the left, travel up to the brain and cause a stroke. Studies show that nearly half of all people who suffer a cryptogenic stroke also have a PFO.

“The results of this landmark study are clinically important as we continue to search for solutions for young and middle-aged patients with a long-life expectancy, who are at risk of having a second stroke. The RESPECT trial data shows device closure with the AMPLATZER PFO Occluder, in carefully selected patients, is quite safe, effective in closing the PFO, and lowers the risk of recurrent stroke in two of the three patient cohorts,” said Dr. John D. Carroll, director of the Cardiac and Vascular Center and Interventional Cardiology at the University of Colorado Hospital and lead author of the journal article. “The reduction in stroke achieved in the PFO-closure group exceeds that of several well-established pharmacologic treatments for the prevention of secondary strokes.”

Conducted over the course of eight years at 69 medical centers in the U.S. and Canada, the RESPECT study followed 980 participants who had suffered a cryptogenic stroke that was confirmed by stroke neurologists using routine imaging technologies. The average age of the …read more

Newly Published Data IndicatesSt. Jude Medical Trifecta Heart Valve Closely Resembles the Hemodynamic Performance of a Natural, Healthy Heart Valve

Study in The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery highlights the Trifecta valve’s excellent hemodynamic performance and ease of implant

ST. PAUL, Minn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– St. Jude Medical, Inc. (NYS: STJ) , a global medical device company, announced that its Trifecta biological pericardial aortic valve has demonstrated positive results in a new study published online in The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. The Trifecta valve was evaluated in patients who required aortic valve replacement surgery. The results highlight the outstanding hemodynamic performance of the Trifecta valve (the ability to maximize blood flow through the valve), further confirm safety, and describe its ease of use. This study is one of the largest, multi-center, prospective studies ever conducted on a surgical aortic heart valve.

The Trifecta (TM) Valve. (Photo: St. Jude Medical, Inc.)

Conducted at 31 medical centers in the U.S., Canada and Europe, the study followed 1,014 eligible patients implanted with the Trifecta valve between 2007 and 2009 as part of a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pre-market approval study. Data from the study was used to secure European CE Mark approval in 2010, FDA approval in 2011 as well as regulatory approval of the Trifecta valve in Japan in 2012.

A three leaflet tissue valve constructed from a polyester and tissue-covered titanium stent, the Trifecta valve serves as a replacement for the aortic valve, which is located between the heart’s left ventricle and the aorta (the vessel which carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body). The valve features leaflets made of pericardial tissue that are attached to the exterior of the stent. This design allows the leaflets to open more fully and efficiently, mimicking the hemodynamic performance of a healthy aortic heart valve. It also limits tissue abrasion through tissue-to-tissue (stent-to-leaflet) contact, which helps protect the valve against mechanical wear. A polyester sewing cuff connects the valve to the annulus of the aortic valve. Finally, the valve also features Linx AC Technology, an anti-calcification treatment designed to reduce tissue mineralization (hardening), which can lead to valve deterioration over time.

Dr. Joseph E. Bavaria, Roberts-Measey endowed professor and vice-chief of cardiovascular surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, served as lead author of the journal article.

Missouri American Water Partners with EPA and Community Action Agency for Fix a Leak Week

Energy/Health Forum offers ideas for managing utility bills

ST. LOUIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Missouri American Water has partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to promote the fifth annual Fix a Leak Week, which runs from March 18-24. The national awareness campaign, part of the EPA‘s WaterSense program, is designed to raise awareness about small leaks and other water waste that may be occurring within homes.

Locally, Missouri American Water is joining the Community Action Agency of St. Louis County, to provide information and tools to help local residents manage their utility bills at the agency’s Utility Fair on Saturday, March 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The fair will be held at the Third Presbyterian Church, 9990 Highway 67 in Moline Acres, MO. Register by calling 314-446-4424 or 314-868-9600.

Missouri American Water teams will provide wise water usage information and leak detection kits. EPA estimates that the average residence loses 11,000 gallons of water per year through undetected leaks.

“Leaks as small as an eighth of an inch can consume up to 3,500 gallons of water per day,” said Missouri American Water Environmental Manager Tim Ganz. “Proactively checking for leaks, and fixing them quickly, not only makes you a more environmentally conscious consumer of one of the world’s most valuable resources, but also helps save money on your monthly water bill,” said Ganz.

Missouri American Water‘s leak detection kits are also available online at www.missouriamwater.com.

Missouri American Water

Missouri American Water, a subsidiary of American Water (NYS: AWK) , is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing high-quality and reliable water and/or wastewater services to approximately 1.5 million people.

Founded in 1886, American Water is the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company. With headquarters in Voorhees, N.J., the company employs approximately 6,700 dedicated professionals who provide drinking water, wastewater and other related services to an estimated 14 million people in more than 30 states and parts of Canada.

Ericsson, STMicroelectronics Wind Down Joint Venture

By Tim Brugger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

After several months of discussions, the management teams of Sweden-based Ericsson and Switzerland’s STMicroelectronics have agreed on the dissolution of their mobile chip manufacturing joint venture, ST-Ericsson.

Several aspects of the joint venture will be assumed by either Ericsson or ST, the companies announced Monday, with the remaining parts of the ST-Ericsson partnership closed down.

Ericsson will retain design, development, and sales of the former venture’s 2G, 3G, and 4G, LTE multimode thin modem products. STMicroelectronics will take over several testing and assembly facilities, in addition to multiple, existing ST-Ericsson products. The balance of the former joint venture’s efforts are scheduled to be phased out by Q3 of 2013.

Ericsson has set aside SEK 3.3 billion ($512 million) to cover costs associated with the dissolution, and intends to report the former ST-Ericsson multimode thin modem unit as a separate business segment following the transition. Ericsson expects a loss by the unit of approximately SEK 0.5 billion ($78 million) in Q4, primarily due to R&D expenses.

STMicroelectronics will incur restructuring costs of approximately $350 million to $450 million during the transition period, less than previously expected.

The two companies also announced the appointment of Carlo Ferro, currently chief operating officer of ST-Ericsson, as president and CEO of ST-Ericsson to lead the unit during the change.

Report: Ford will probably never offer two RS models at the same time

By Zach Bowman

2011 Ford Focus RS500 - dead-on front view, black

Filed under:

Autocar has some sour news for fans of go-fast Ford products. According to Roelant de Waard, Ford’s president of marketing in Europe, the automaker will probably never offer more than one RS performance model for sale at the same time. That statement runs contrary earlier rumblings that suggested Ford would launch its next-generation Focus RS in 2015 and follow the hatch with a spate of other vehicles with an RS badge. But de Waard has made it clear that Ford of Europe is now focused on squarely on the next Mustang, even though there may be more RS models on the way eventually.

“What is clear is that the RS shouldn’t be a series, or a car badge that we have in our portfolio all the time. It is an extreme car – something more than ST,” he said.

That philosophy makes plenty of sense. We loved the old Focus RS – shown above in RS500 trim – because it was generally bonkers and plenty exclusive. Diluting either aspect is sure to end in disappointment for everyone involved.

STMicroelectronics Wins as Ericsson Loses in Joint Venture Wind Down

By 24/7 Wall St.

Stock Split Image

STMicroelectronics N.V. (NYSE: STM) is winning while Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) is losing on news that the two companies have agreed to split up their unprofitable joint venture. Some assets will be taken by each company while other assets will be closed or sold.

The press release this morning from STMicroelectronics indicated an agreement on a strategic way forward for this unprofitable joint venture. That path forward is one that appears on the surface to be better for ST than for Ericsson. The plans are as follows:

  • Ericsson will take on the design, development and sales of the LTE multimode thin modem products, including 2G, 3G and 4G multimode.
  • ST will take on the existing ST-Ericsson products, other than LTE multimode thin modems, and related business, as well as certain assembly and test facilities.
  • Starting the shut down of the remaining parts of ST-Ericsson.
  • Ericsson will assume approximately 1,800 employees and contractors, with the largest concentrations in Sweden, Germany, India and China.
  • ST will assume approximately 950 employees, primarily in France and in Italy, to support ongoing business and new products development within ST.

After looking through the numbers, the problem is the losses that will absorbed. Ericsson has made provisions of for -3.3 billion Swedish kroner to cover costs related to the implementation of the strategic option. Once the multimode thin modem business has been fully integrated into Ericsson in the fourth quarter, the operation will be reported as a standalone segment, and it will generate operating losses of approximately 500 million Swedish kroner, mostly on R&D expenses.

Ericsson is down 2.8% at $12.90 for its New York ADRs, and STMicroelectronics is seeing a gain of 3.8% to $7.93 for its New York ADRs.

COBB Tuning Introduces 300-hp Tanner Foust Edition Ford Focus ST

By Alexander Stoklosa

Tanner Foust Edition Focus ST

COBB Tuning has long been associated with modifying Subarus of the WRX and STI variety, but lately it has begun branching out to other brands. One of the latest objects of the firm’s attention is Ford’s Focus. The outfit brought a regular Focus modified for racing duty to the 2011 SEMA show, and now it is rolling out a slew of performance parts for the Focus ST and introducing a turn-key Tanner Foust Edition based on the ST. Tanner Foust, for those who don’t watch television or pay attention to Rallycross and drifting, is a race-car driver and one of the hosts of Top Gear USA.

If the Foust Edition Focus ST looks familiar, it’s because a very similar-looking car graced Ford’s show stand at the 2012 SEMA show. The production version is loaded with COBB parts, including a new intercooler, intake, exhaust, and suspension bits. There’s also an ECU upgrade, and COBB claims that total output rises from the stock car’s 252 horsepower to 300. Cosmetically, the Tanner Foust Edition is festooned with carbon-fiber aero pieces, a unique grille, Mustang GT–style hood vents, a racy graphics package, and a handsome set of black wheels.

The good news is that buyers won’t have to cough up a yet-undisclosed amount of money over a regular ST to step into the Tanner Foust Edition to get some COBB love. All of the upgrades will be available from COBB individually or bundled into stage upgrade kits. If the complete Tanner Foust Edition ST tickles your fancy, COBB will be selling them directly and will make them available for sale in select Ford dealerships later this year. If it were our money, we’d go for the performance goodies individually and keep our ST’s exterior as stock-looking as possible for the ultimate 300-hp hot-hatch sleeper.
