New Jersey American Water’s Chiavari Testifies to NJ Clean Water Council About Company Lessons from Sandy Response

VOORHEES, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– New Jersey American Water Vice President for Engineering Suzanne Chiavari joined New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin and other speakers testifying before the New Jersey Clean Water Council today to provide an overview of the water infrastructure damage from recent storms, including Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, and discuss water system resiliency and planning issues.

“Except in rare instances, our customers do not lose water service during storm events because we build our water storage tanks to act as buffers, and provide standby power for critical facilities, and we build our critical assets above 100-year flood elevations, while adding flood protection for older facilities as needed,” said Chiavari. Nonetheless, Chiavari told the council that recent weather storms such as Irene and Sandy, combined with the issue of aging water infrastructure are causing the company to review traditional planning and design criteria. “This new normal has led us to look beyond traditional reliability and emergency planning into a world that needs the speed of recovery and resiliency for much more widespread events,” she said.

Chiavari shared eight key learning points from New Jersey American Water‘s experience in Superstorm Sandy related to water system resiliency, which she told the Council needs to be a high priority in the state.

  1. A large network of resources improves resiliency: Through parent company American Water‘s national network, New Jersey American Water was able to tap into a large quantity of qualified staff, vendor relationships, materials, equipment and contractors.
  2. Asset Management Systems are critical for preparedness: “You need to know what assets you have, where they are located, what is their maintenance history, spare parts inventory and the condition of these assets,” said Chiavari. Systems such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and CMMS (computerized maintenance management systems) provide the utility with information at their fingertips instead of having to hunt for records in file drawers or remote storage.
  3. Planning and Risk Assessment are also critical for preparedness: “We have a robust asset management program that starts with comprehensive master planning for each …read more

West Virginia American Water’s Reports on Water Quality Available Online

New delivery method supports company’s commitment to environmental sustainability

CHARLESTON, W.Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– West VirginiaAmerican Water announced today that the company’s 2012 Consumer Confidence Reports on water quality will be available online to customers this spring and will not be printed and mailed to all customers as in previous years.Messages included on upcoming water bills will provide customers with a direct URL address to access their specific water quality report. The reports can also be found online at www.westvirginiaamwater.com.

In January 2013, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that water utilities had the option to inform customers of the annual report’s availability at a specific website address as opposed to printing and either direct mailing or including the annual report as a bill insert. West Virginia American Water acted swiftly to take advantage of this more efficient and environmentally friendly option for delivering reports on its 2012 water quality information.

According to EPA data, 4,243 drinking water Notices of Violation (NOVs) were issued throughout the state of West Virginia last year. Almost 300 drinking water systems received at least one NOV. West Virginia American Water – which serves one-third of the state’s population – received only one, which was due to a reporting failure for a water sample within a specific quarter in one district. If West Virginia American Water operated like the average drinking water system in West Virginia, it would have received the equivalent of 127 NOVs in 2012. Company-wide, American Water reported drinking water and wastewater compliance rates greater than 99 percent in 2012.

“The fact that West Virginia American Water performed 127 times better than the average drinking water system in the state last year is a testament to the dedication of our team of water quality and plant operations professionals who work hard each and every day to ensure the highest quality water and service to our customers,” said Jeff McIntyre, president of West Virginia American Water.

This new delivery method of annual water quality reports supports the water industry’s commitment to ongoing environmental quality and does not minimize the importance of the annual report to customers, according to McIntyre. “Our customers will find in these reports that the water we produce is of higher quality than required by all state and federal drinking water standards,” he said.

Request for Qualifications Issued for Monterey Desal Project

California American Water seeks Design-Build firm for the Desalination Component of its Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project

PACIFIC GROVE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– California American Water issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) today, the first step in selecting the design-build (DB) contractor for the desalination infrastructure component of its Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project.

The approximately $400 million water supply project, which is currently under review by the California Public Utilities Commission, will provide water to residents of the Monterey Peninsula through a combination of seawater desalination, aquifer storage recovery and groundwater replenishment. The project is needed to replace current diversions from the Carmel River as ordered by the State Water Resources Control Board in its 2009 Cease and Desist Order. The RFQ pertains only to the desalination portion of the project.

“This desalination project provides an excellent opportunity for qualified firms interested in taking part in one of the most innovative water supply projects in the country,” said California American Water Director of Engineering, Rich Svindland.

The desalination facility, which will be located in Marina, will treat water drawn from subsurface slant wells along the coast. The resulting brine will be discharged to the ocean through the Monterey Regional Water Pollution Control Agency‘s existing outfall.

The content of the RFQ is the result of a collaborative process between the company and members of the Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project Governance Committee, a local oversight group made up of representatives from the Monterey Peninsula Regional Water Authority, Monterey County Board of Supervisors and the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District.

A copy of the RFQ and more information about the Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project are available at www.watersupplyproject.org.

New Jersey American Water to Resume Treating Water with Chloramines

Water Treatment Changes for Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset & Union Counties

VOORHEES, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– On or about April 1, 2013 New Jersey American Water will resume the use of chloramines (a mixture of chlorine and ammonia) to treat water at its Canal Road and Raritan-Millstone Water Treatment Plants. Chloramines have been used in this system for 25 years and are an effective method of water disinfection meeting all USEPA and NJDEP drinking water standards.

In January, as part of its system maintenance program, New Jersey American Water temporarily changed its treatment process from chloramines to chlorine. The three-month changeover to chlorine enabled the company to perform maintenance on its chemical feed systems and removed any residual ammonia from the water distribution system.

During the transition to chlorine some customers noticed a chlorinous taste and odor in their water. When the chloramination process resumes, the taste and smell of chlorine will abate.

The following municipalities receive service from the Raritan-Millstone and Canal Road Water Treatment Plants:

Bedminster, Belle Meade, Bound Brook, Branchburg, Bridgewater, Chester, Clark, Cranbury, Cranford, Dunellen, Elizabeth, Edison, Fanwood, Flemington, Franklin, Garwood, Green Brook, Hillside, Hillsborough, Jamesburg, Kenilworth, Kingston, Lawrence, Linden, Manville, Martinsville, Middlesex, Millstone, Montgomery, Mountainside, North Plainfield, Peapak/Gladstone, Piscataway, Plainfield, Plainsboro, Pottersville, Princeton, Raritan, Roselle, Roselle Park, Readington, Scotch Plains, Somerville, South Bound Brook, South Brunswick, South Plainfield, Tewksbury, Union, and Westfield.

New Jersey American Water, a wholly owned subsidiary of American Water (NYS: AWK) , is the largest water utility in the state, providing high-quality and reliable water and/or wastewater services to approximately 2.5 million people. New Jersey American Water Begins "Spring Cleaning" Program

New Jersey American Water Begins “Spring Cleaning” Program

VOORHEES, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– This spring and into the summer months, New Jersey American Water will be cleaning its water distribution system to help ensure that customers continue to receive high-quality water. During the company’s annual “Spring Cleaning” program, crews will be flushing out water mains to remove harmless particles that have built up in the pipes over time.

In the areas where Spring Cleaning is scheduled, New Jersey American Water will be opening fire hydrants to increase water flows and “flush” sediment from its pipes. When hydrants are being flushed, customers may notice a drop in water pressure or may experience discolored water. This is a normal part of the process. New Jersey American Water advises customers to let their water run until it is clear.

The municipalities, start dates and end dates, where New Jersey American Water will be Spring Cleaning can be found at www.newjerseyamwater.com.

New Jersey American Water is offering its customers the following additional tips while mains are being flushed:

  • Avoid running your tap water, using the washing machine or dishwasher while crews are flushing.
  • Check for discolored water before using the washing machine or dishwasher. Wait until the water runs clear at the tap before doing laundry or running the dishwasher. NOTE: If laundry becomes stained, do not put your laundry in the dryer. Rewash clothes immediately using detergent and add a rust remover. Most rust removers can also be used on stained fixtures.
  • In some cases, slight discoloration may linger for a few hours. This discoloration only affects the appearance of the water and does not affect water quality.
  • If water pressure or water volume seems low after flushing has been completed, check faucet screens for trapped particles.

Missouri American Water Partners with EPA and Community Action Agency for Fix a Leak Week

Energy/Health Forum offers ideas for managing utility bills

ST. LOUIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Missouri American Water has partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to promote the fifth annual Fix a Leak Week, which runs from March 18-24. The national awareness campaign, part of the EPA‘s WaterSense program, is designed to raise awareness about small leaks and other water waste that may be occurring within homes.

Locally, Missouri American Water is joining the Community Action Agency of St. Louis County, to provide information and tools to help local residents manage their utility bills at the agency’s Utility Fair on Saturday, March 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The fair will be held at the Third Presbyterian Church, 9990 Highway 67 in Moline Acres, MO. Register by calling 314-446-4424 or 314-868-9600.

Missouri American Water teams will provide wise water usage information and leak detection kits. EPA estimates that the average residence loses 11,000 gallons of water per year through undetected leaks.

“Leaks as small as an eighth of an inch can consume up to 3,500 gallons of water per day,” said Missouri American Water Environmental Manager Tim Ganz. “Proactively checking for leaks, and fixing them quickly, not only makes you a more environmentally conscious consumer of one of the world’s most valuable resources, but also helps save money on your monthly water bill,” said Ganz.

Missouri American Water‘s leak detection kits are also available online at www.missouriamwater.com.

American Water CEO Says New ASCE Report Card Underscores the Need to Act Now to Update Water Systems

VOORHEES, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– “The grades are in, and the nation’s drinking water and wastewater infrastructure is still in a poor state. If it were a student, such ongoing marginal performance would not be acceptable,” said Jeff Sterba, President and CEO of American Water, referring to the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) latest Report Card for America’s Infrastructure, released today. The report, issued every four years since 2001, gave the nation’s water systems a D grade, up slightly from the D- conferred in the last two reports, but, according to Sterba, this year’s outcome is not a cause for celebration. He sees the findings as further confirmation of the need to update and maintain water infrastructure to ensure resiliency for health, safety, and robust local economies.

A breakdown of water systems can result in water disruptions, impediments to emergency response, and damage to other types of infrastructure, as well as unsanitary conditions, increasing the likelihood of public health issues. “Simply put, allowing water infrastructure to lapse puts the nation’s communities at risk,” said Sterba.

The price tag for the critical upkeep and replacement of the nation’s outdated water systems is approximately $1 trillion over the next 25 years, estimates the American Water Works Association. While this financial challenge is significant, there are solutions, including attracting additional private capital for public water infrastructure projects from companies like American Water, which proactively invests $800 million to $1 billion annually in needed system improvements to its water treatment facilities, distribution systems, and other critical assets across its footprint.

“Such investments prove their value every day,” said Sterba. “From projects to replace water mains, pipelines, and hydrants, and the installation of advanced metering technology to help reduce water leaks, to enhanced treatment capabilities improving efficiency and reliability, the investments we’ve made into the system ensure that we are well positioned to continue to meet customer needs in the communities that rely on us.

“What’s more, investing in water infrastructure development creates good-paying jobs and boosts local economic growth. There is no better time to reinvest in our essential water infrastructure,” Sterba added.

According to Sterba, the value of the ASCE Report Card is in raising customer awareness of the critical nature of these issues, and that they already play an important role in system renewal and future reliability by simply paying their water bills. “By supporting needed improvements, customers and American Water are working together to keep the …read more

American Water Partners with EPA for “Fix a Leak Week,” March 18-24

VOORHEES, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– American Water (NYS: AWK) , the nation’s largest publicly traded water and wastewater utility company, is partnering with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to promote the fifth annual Fix a Leak Week, which runs from March 18-24. The national awareness campaign, part of the EPA‘s WaterSense program, is designed to raise awareness about small leaks and other water waste that may be occurring within homes.

A historic lack of investment in infrastructure has left the nation’s vast network of water systems in serious disrepair. The risks of allowing these systems to lapse are as real as they are alarming. Considering there are more than 110 million households in this country, a seemingly minor leaky faucet or running toilet collectively results in a tremendous amount of wasted water — more than a trillion gallons of water are lost annually nationwide through leaks occurring within our homes, with average residence losing 11,000 gallons a year this way. However, through initiatives like Fix a Leak Week, water utilities like American Water, are hoping to significantly reduce that amount.

“Considering leaks as small as an eighth of an inch can consume up to 3,500 gallons of water per day, being proactive in checking for leaks, and fixing them in a timely manner, not only makes you a more environmentally conscious consumer of one of the world’s most valuable resources, but also saves money on your monthly water bill,” said Dr. Mark LeChevallier, Director of Innovation & Environmental Stewardship for American Water.

Just as homeowners have a responsibility to check their pipes for leaks, water utilities nationwide must also find and repair system leaks. In water systems across the country, it is estimated that almost seven billion gallons of drinking water are lost each day through leaky pipes. Ironically this week, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) will release its 2013 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure. The ASCE gave the nation’s drinking water/wastewater a D- grade in both 2005 and 2009 – the worst condition among the categories of infrastructure systems studied.

American Water invests $800 million to $1 billion in its systems annually to ensure the continued delivery of high-quality water to its customers. The lion’s share of the annual investment is to renew, replace and extend the underground lines, valves and meters that aren’t seen but are the means by which customers are served.

American Water Awarded Research Grant from Water Research Foundation

VOORHEES, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– American Water (NYS: AWK) , the nation’s largest publicly traded water and wastewater utility company, today announced it has been awarded a research grant from the Water Research Foundation to partner with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and University of Alberta to determine the occurrence of nitrosamines in drinking water systems in North America.

The total value of the project is $711,902, with $400,000 funded by the Water Research Foundation and $311,902 in-kind contribution from the project team. American Water will directly receive $137,200 to pay for research costs.

The project will examine drinking water plants in the U.S. States and Canada to clarify the impact of various conventional and advanced treatment processes in minimizing the formation of nitrosamines, which are known carcinogenic compounds. Certain nitrosamines are by-products of the disinfectant chloramines – a common disinfectant in the U.S. drinking water industry, which is used as an alternative to chlorine to control the formation of regulated halogenated by-products. This research will allow the team to determine key factors that lead to nitrosamine formation in treated drinking waters using chloramines and identify cost-effective controls.

“The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is considering inclusion of nitrosamines in future drinking water regulations. Should this happen, the information from this project will be very beneficial for drinking water utilities as they fine tune their treatment processes to meet such regulations,” stated Dr. Zia Bukhari, American Water senior environmental scientist.

The project team consists of Metropolitan Water District’s Stuart Krasner as the principal investigator, with Dr. Zia Bukhari and Dr. XingFang Li of University of Alberta serving as co-principal investigators.

American Water CEO Provides Testimony to Congress on Solutions to Nation’s Water Infrastructure Financing Needs

VOORHEES, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYS: AWK) , the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced its president and chief executive officer, Jeff Sterba, is today providing testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies.

Sterba, who is representing both American Water and the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC), is presenting potential financing solutions to help water providers nationwide repair and replace aging water and wastewater systems. As the nation’s water and wastewater infrastructure is in critical need of repair, it has become increasingly important for water utilities to gain access to private funds for financing upgrades to their pipes, pumps and plants.

“I am pleased to present actions we can take together as a nation to unleash more tools for the financing toolbox, through innovation and by embracing the powerful combination of public service and private enterprise to build the water infrastructure our communities need to thrive and to be healthy,” said Sterba. “The country’s aging infrastructure is a severe challenge for the water industry as evidenced by the 650 water main breaks every day and two trillion gallons of treated water lost every year at an estimated cost of $2.6 billion. Aging and deteriorating public water systems threaten economic vitality and public health, and communities nationwide are faced with massive fiscal challenges to replace critical water and wastewater infrastructure.”

Sterba continued, “The challenges we face to protect and maintain our water and wastewater systems and make the investments needed for continuing growth and new public health and environmental standards seem vast, but they need not paralyze us. The tools I am proposing will help attract additional private capital for the long-term, reliable investments that well-run water utilities provide. These tools will also provide municipalities with additional flexibility to deliver cost-effective and sustainable solutions in addressing their water and wastewater system and for improving their overall fiscal health.”

Sterba’s written testimony is posted on American Water‘s website, in the press resources section at http://pr.amwater.com/PressResources/resources.cfm.
