Report: Mercedes leads in US luxury car thefts

By Brandon Turkus

Mercedes-Benz makes some fine automobiles. The Silver Arrow’d cars are so good, apparently, that thieves can’t help but try to steal them. The German brand is at the top of the charts for luxury car thefts in the US, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, with New York City leading the way. (And those New Yorkers complain about Detroit being bad!)

The C-Class was the most stolen model, with 485 ganked between 2009 and 2012 in NYC alone, while the E-Class and S-Class (which also boasted the worst recovery rate, at 59 percent) both finished in the top ten. Following the C-Class was the BMW 3 Series and Infiniti G. Not surprisingly, each of these were the most common models in their respective lineups. Los Angeles and Miami are also prime hotspots for luxury car thefts, according to the Detroit News report.

While getting your car stolen is pretty awful, there was one inspiring statistic compiled by the NICB – the average recovery rate across the board was 84 percent, with the Cadillac CTS getting recovered 91 percent of the time.

Debi Mazar Talks Madonna, Answers Rapid-Fire Questions On ‘Watch What Happens: Live’ (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Actress Debi Mazar dropped by the clubhouse on “Watch What Happens: Live” and Andy Cohen couldn’t wait to ask her a few questions about her BFF, Madonna. The two have been friends since before either one of them had any sort of fame.

Cohen did limit himself to 45 seconds, but anyone who knows how fast he talks knows that he can still pump a lot of questions at her in that span of time. Through his grilling of Mazar he learned that Madge smells like gardenias, loves salted fish and is a feisty Leo. Mazar also said that “Sean” was Madonna’s true love — but when asked to clarify if she was referring to Sean Penn, she said only, “Maybe.”

“Did Madonna ever steal any of your boyfriends?” Cohen asked her. Mazar said yes, but then backed up. She said that Madonna had tried to steal her boyfriend, but it didn’t happen. She also revealed a strange Madonna-Bravo connection. Apparently, Madonna used to get “spiritual baths” and “blessings” from self-professed witch, Mama Elsa of “The Real Housewives of Miami.”

The Crew Didn't Start Development as an Xbox One or PS4 Title

Ubisoft announced its upcoming massively mutliplayer arcade racer The Crew back in May, and despite its obvious intentions for a next-gen console release, it turns out work on the title began some time ago. During an interview with Digital Trends, creative director Julian Gerighty says production on the game actually began four years ago, but the development team quickly realized waiting for the power of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 just made sense.

“It happened about a year and a half ago, where we realized we can push this a little bit further, we can push the personalization of the world, the non-procedural nature of the world, a little bit further if we do it on Xbox One and PS4,” said Gerighty. “So our Miami is radically different from our New York, which is normal but it takes a lot of work to get it to that level of quality. And that’s only possible on this next-generation.”

Obama’s Latest Blunder Is Treasonous In 178 Countries

By Floyd Brown

Democrats Despise Taxpayers SC Obamas Latest Blunder is Treasonous in 178 Countries

In May, I shared with you the details about 172 House members visiting over 90 countries and every continent except Antarctica in 2012 – all on your dime. But members of the U.S. House of Representatives actually travel modestly compared to the VIP travel undertaken by Obama’s friends and appointees.

And of course, any travel review needs to start with the travel queen of the last four years, Hillary Clinton.

Hillary traveled at a record-setting pace, journeying 956,733 miles and setting foot in 112 countries. This adds up to 2,084 hours spent flying around the world, which is equivalent to 86 whole days spent aboard her government-issued luxury jetliner. And how do we know these facts? Because she likes to brag about them.

But when it comes to costs, your guess is as good as mine. Despite repeated Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, her department refuses to come clean about how much this travel cost U.S. taxpayers.

Ironically, Obama’s “most transparent administration in history” works hard to hide the details of the luxurious globe-trotting. But thanks to some hard work by lawyers using the Freedom of Information Act, some other portions of the travel details are beginning to surface.

And That’s Only the Beginning…

It’s only proper that Attorney General Eric Holder tells us how much his travels cost, since he’s the federal officer in charge of FOIA compliance. While he hasn’t been too diligent about asking others to comply, he did comply himself – to some degree.

From his disclosures, we learned that during 2011, Holder filed 62 long-distant jaunts that cost us, at a minimum, $1.45 million. However, he refused to disclose flight costs for seven major trips out, including travels to China, Hawaii, and Brussels.

Holder’s travelling includes an April 2011 sojourn to Las Vegas, mixing business and personal travel, which totaled $46,358. Other “personal” trips, including visits to Martha’s Vineyard and Miami, cost us taxpayers a whopping $169,502.

And of course there’s Joe Biden. Today, we learned that the vice-president’s six-day trip to South America and the Caribbean included one 20-hour stop in Trinidad and Tobago that cost an astounding $245,000. As has become standard, the contract was awarded without “full and open competition” because of security and logistical concerns.

Yet the scariest part is that, while the travel for administration officials sounds expensive to those of us who pay our own bills while flying coach or driving on our summer trips, these Obama appointees don’t even hold a candle to Michelle and Barack.

First, there was Michelle Obama’s 2012 President’s Day weekend ski vacation to Aspen, Colorado with her two daughters. The total cost for the Aspen ski vacation was at least $83,182.99. The bill for the U.S. Secret Service, including accommodations at the Fasching Haus deluxe condominiums and the Inn at Aspen, came to $48,950.38. The cost for the flight, per official DOD published hourly rates, was $22,583.70.  Food and miscellaneous on-flight items cost $235.44. The cost for rental cars totaled $6,442.23.

But that’s nothing. A drop in the bucket. More importantly, …read more

Gianni Versace's Miami Home Is Going to Auction

By Justin Fenner

Good news for real estate moguls and fashion lovers alike: Casa Casuarina’s headed to the auction block. Originally listed for $125 million in June 2012 before being reduced to $75 million, bidding for the 10-bedroom Miami mansion will start the morning of September 17.

Want to get your hands on this gilded, mosaic beauty (which just so happens to feature a six-person shower)? Bidders must prove that they have $40 million in funds and will be required to escrow $3 million with the owner’s firm. Small price to pay for the storied site of Gianni Versace‘s infamous parties.

“Every room is a work of art,” said said Jill Eber, the real estate agent of the home’s current owner Peter Loftin, when the house was listed last year. “If the person buying it is not already a celebrity, it gives them instant celebrity status – if they want it.”

A look at the house that Versace built here in the gallery.

Report: Formula E calendar set at ten races, top F1 teams being courted

By Brandon Turkus

Filed under:

Formula E, the open-wheel EV racing series has finalized the calendar for its inaugural season. Set to kick of in 2014, the races looks like to have been distributed quite evenly across the globe.

Two American races (LA and Miami) along with a pair of South American races in Rio and Buenos Aires round out the contests in the New World. London, Berlin and Rome make up the European leg of the championship, while Beijing, Bangkok and Putrajaya cover Asia.

This news follows a report from Autoweek that Formula E is courting some of the top Formula One teams. According to AW, series organizer Alejandro Agag is already in talks with McLaren, and is of the opinion that one day the likes of Ferrari and Red Bull will take part in the emissions free series.

Despite the current lack of big names, the parts of the Formula E cars look promising. Batteries from Williams are mated to electric motors from McLaren, while Dallara provides the chassis. Like F1, there’s only one tire supplier, although we’re happy to announce it’s Michelin rather than Pirelli. Series test driver Lucas di Grassi showed us just what the FE cars can do with an in-car video a few months ago.

As for drivers, we don’t see Sebastien Vettel leaving his gas-powered racer soon. Formula E could see an influx of retired F1 drivers and GP2 veterans, although Agag told Autoweek “I can’t say any names yet.” The series will kickoff in 2014, in the Italian capital of Rome.

Zimmerman verdict protesters block Los Angeles freeway

People protesting the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial clashed with police Sunday night in Los Angeles, with one group of protesters blocking a major freeway.

The Los Angeles Times reported that a splinter group from a larger protest walked down an on-ramp to the Interstate 10 freeway in the Mid-City section of Los Angeles and stood in the eastbound lanes, closing portions of the traffic artery for approximately 25 minutes.

The Los Angeles Police Department called a citywide tactical alert at approximately 7:30 p.m. local time following the freeway incident.Motorists were urged to avoid the area around the 10 Freeway and Crenshaw Boulevard due to jammed traffic.

The Times also quoted an LAPD spokesman who said that at least one arrest was made after rocks and D-cell batteries were thrown at officers at the corner of Washington Boulevard and 10th Avenue. Police also fired non-lethal rounds at the demonstrators. No injuries were immediately reported.

Zimmerman, 29, was found not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the February 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman had confessed to shooting the teen, but claimed to act in self-defense. Prosecutors said that Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain, had profiled Martin and followed him, creating a confrontation.

n New York City, hundreds of protesters marched into Times Square on Sunday night, zigzagging through Manhattan’s streets to avoid police lines.

Sign-carrying marchers thronged the busy intersection, chanting “Justice for! Trayvon Martin!” as they made their way from Union Square.

Some tempered their anger, saying they didn’t contest the jury’s decision based on the legal issues involved.

But “while the verdict may be legal, a system that doesn’t take into account what happened is a broken legal system,” said Jennifer Lue, 24, an Asian-American resident of Harlem.

Rev. Jacqueline Lewis told the Middle Collegiate Church congregation in Manhattan Sunday morning, “We’re going to raise our voices against the root causes of this kind of tragedy,” while Baptist Pastor Jack Hakimian reportedly expressed disappointment and resignation at the Impact Miami Church in North Miami.

In South Florida, a wary populace awoke to relative calm Sunday, as fears of mass and violent protests proved unfounded in the face of a highly-visible police presence.

“I haven’t seen any evidence of problems yet, and hopefully there won’t be any,” Ed Shohat, a Miami-Dade’s Community Relations Board member, told The Miami Herald. “We do not believe (violence) will happen. Frankly, Miami is a … more mature community than … 25, 30 years ago when we had violent reactions to criminal court verdicts.”

Meanwhile, Mark O’Mara, who defended Zimmerman at trial, suggested his client’s safety was at risk. “There still is a fringe element that wants revenge,” O’Mara said. “They won’t listen to a verdict of not guilty.”

However, Martin supporters — for the most part — somberly grieved the verdict in a non-violent fashion.

Some detractors of the verdict spoke of a lingering and ineffable sadness, which they sought to privately assuage through the comfort of family and friends. Others convened in places of worship — …read more

Suspending A-Rod And Ryan Braun Could Jeopardize The Credibility Of MLB's Joint Drug Prevention And Treatment Program

By Alicia Jessop, Contributor In recent weeks, reports have indicated that some of MLB’s biggest stars, including Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun, may face suspensions as a result of MLB’s investigation into Biogenesis, the Miami anti-aging clinic which allegedly supplied performance enhancing drugs to MLB players.  With major media outlets asserting that MLB is considering imposing at least 100-game bans against Rodriguez and Braun, an evaluation of MLB’s Join Drug Prevention and Treatment Program demonstrates that imposing such discipline may not be in MLB’s best interest. …read more

At court, groups gather to await Zimmerman verdict

As jurors deliberated for a second day in George Zimmerman’s murder trial, there was little understanding between two camps assembled outside the Seminole County Courthouse to await a verdict.

“He deserves some respect and appreciation,” Casey David Kole Sr., 66, shouted about the former neighborhood watch leader. “It’s a tragedy.”

Patricia Dalton, 60, yelled back: “It’s a tragedy that could have been avoided!”

Dalton, like most of the 100 or so people at the suburban Orlando courthouse, says she’s there in support of the family of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old black teen from Miami who Zimmerman fatally shot last year.

Prosecutors and Trayvon Martin’s family say Zimmerman profiled Martin because of the teen’s race. Those allegations, and a 44-day delay before police arrested Zimmerman, sparked nationwide protests involving leading national civil rights leaders and spurred emotional debates about gun control, self-defense laws, race, and equal justice under the law.

In Saturday’s strong Florida sun, some people at the courthouse wore hoodies, as Martin had when he died. One woman lay in the grass, her arms spread, in a re-creation of Martin’s death. Those in the smaller pro-Zimmerman camp held small signs, saying things like “We love you George” and “George got hit you must acquit.”

Joseph Uy of Longwood was among an even smaller group: the few who said they had no opinion on whether Zimmerman was guilty. He said he came because he was “just curious.”

“I’m neutral,” he said, while cradling his three tiny Chihuahuas in his arms.

By mid-afternoon, people rallied in the heat and chanted slogans as a looming thundercloud threatened a downpour.

“Justice for Trayvon,” some shouted. Others yelled, “Convict George Zimmerman.”

Over three weeks, the jury has heard dueling portraits of the neighborhood watch captain: a cop wannabe who took the law into his own hands or a well-meaning volunteer who shot Martin because he feared for his life.

Zimmerman, 29, has claimed self-defense in the February 2012 confrontation in a gated community where Martin was visiting his father and father’s fiancee.
