Unrepentant Nazi criminal Priebke chills Rome

By hnn

There has been a renewed call in Italy for one of the oldest surviving Nazi war criminals to repent.

It came on the eve of the 100th birthday of Erich Priebke, who has never expressed remorse for his part in a World War ll massacre at the Ardeatine Caves, on the outskirts of Rome.

The former SS officer is actually still in the Italian capital.

He lives under house arrest in what some in the city regard as conditions that are far too comfortable and lenient….

Report: Holden SS V Redline a sales smash

By Brandon Turkus

2014 Holden VF Commodore SS V Redline Front three-quarter

Filed under:

Holden has a hit on its hands. That wouldn’t be much of a surprise were the hit a small, affordable, fuel-efficient car that everyone thought looked like Kate Upton in car form. It’s surprising because said hit has a 6.0-liter V8 with 351 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque, sends its power to the rear wheels, and costs 51,490 Australian dollars ($47,365 at today’s rates). And it doesn’t look anything like the lovely Ms. Upton.

Yes, we’re talking about the new VF Commodore SS V, and in particular, the Redline models. According to Aussie car site Motoring, Holden can’t build the darn things fast enough, with wait lists going into 2014.

This news tells us something about Australian motorists. There’s still a market for big, powerful sedans in Oz, which is a fact that Ford has seemingly forgotten. The VF Commodore, particularly the SS V Redline, is a vehicle that people want, rather than one they need. It’s a shame Ford doesn’t see such a market for its Falcon, rather than killing the historic nameplate. We wonder if Ford could have taken Holden’s approach – rather than killing a big sedan, export it to America. We’d much rather have a rear-drive Falcon than the Taurus. Instead, Ford is basically giving away sales to Holden.

Want further proof that Holden is making the Commodore work? The SS V trim is handily outdoing the standard SS, making up 80 percent of SS sales. People aren’t only buying these big sedans, they’re actively buying the very best versions. We can only hope Chevrolet’s new SS sedan, which is essentially a more powerful Commodore SS V, receives such a warm reception.

Spy Shots: 2014 Chevy Camaro SS Convertible caught naked in the wild

By Seyth Miersma

2014 Chevy Camaro SS Convertible spy shot - top up - silver

Filed under:

While we had our first genuine look at the 2014 Camaro SS back at the New York Auto Show this spring, we hadn’t yet gotten a glimpse of the droptop version of the pony car, until now.

Nabbed near Chevy’s home turf in beautiful Milford, MI, the ’14 Camaro SS Convertible looks ready for prime time as-is. We’ll be honest: From the shoulder-line up, this new Camaro looks almost identical to the outgoing car, with no apparent changes to the folding soft top or rakish A-pillars. Below the waist, the convertible shares the revised front hood, nose and revamped rear treatment with the SS coupe.

This particular SS Convertible is wearing a new set of 20-inch five spoke wheels, as well as a beefy quad exhaust setup out back. Sharp-eyed readers will also notice that the Chevy test driver isn’t terribly pleased with getting his picture taken. Gentle souls should avert their eyes for images four and five of our gallery…

Report: 2014 Chevy SS order guide surfaces

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

Aside from what it’s like to drive the 2014 Chevrolet SS, there is really nothing we don’t already know about the new performance sedan, a fact confirmed when the order guide for the car popped up in our email. SSForums.com has managed to get its hands on the anticlimactic order guide for the rear-wheel drive Chevrolet showing all of the standard features and the few options that will be offered.

We already knew that the only options on the car will consist of your choice of five exterior colors, a $900 sunroof and a $500 spare tire option that replaces the tire inflation kit, and the rest of the order guide matches up with what Chevrolet already told us about the SS. Even so, this is an exciting car, and as we wait for the SS to go on sale (sometime during the fourth quarter of this year), fans – and potential owners – of this full-size performer should enjoy perusing the leaked order guide to aid in their daydreaming – or their ordering.

Nazi-Themed Cafe In Indonesia Sparks Controversy

By The Huffington Post News Editors

BANDUNG, Indonesia — Authorities in central Indonesia will ask a restaurant owner to explain his reasons for opening a Nazi-themed cafe that has sparked controversy among locals and tourists, an official said Thursday.

Soldatenkaffee includes a red wall of Nazi-related memorabilia, including a large flag with the swastika and a giant picture of Adolf Hitler. Its wait staff dresses in SS, or Schutzstaffel, military uniforms, and can be seen posing in front of the cafe on its Facebook page.

How to get result from both of these modules?

By bluemind2005

Hallo All unix Guru’s

I have written a small (static) pl/sql function which is inserting data into database. It is as follows:

Code:

sqlplus $CONNECT <<-EOF
DECLARE
Counter integer :=1;
BEGIN
WHILE Counter <= ${no_of_files} LOOP
INSERT INTO stuck_files(COL_DATE,SER_NAME,TYPE_FILE,FILENAME,FILE_STATUS) VALUES (sysdate,'pqrs','pqrs','pqrs','pqrs');
Counter := Counter + 1;
END LOOP;
END;
/
commit;
exit;
EOF

However the above “insert” needs to be more of dynamic in nature, as such you can see that we want to insert data depending upon the variable value ${no_of_files}.

Now let me show you another module which is giving me the file(s)names which I want to insert.

Code:

N=0
for i in $(find . -path */waiting/* -type f -not -name "SS*" -mmin +120 -print) ; do

testarray[$N]="$i"
echo "$i"

let "N= $N + 1"
done

Sample Output from above command is as follows:

Code:

/d1/d2/d3/d4/waiting/abcd.txt
/d1/d2/d31/d42/waiting/pqrs.txt
/d1/d2/d32/d43/waiting/xyz.txt

Now the data insert which is given in the above pl/sql block has directly to do with this output. It going to be dynamic in nature.

Let us come back to mapping of how we need to insert data based on this output. I will go through the first insert.2 insert and 3rd insert so you would get an idea of design.
But these are very dynamic, meaning the insert depends on the output produced but yes the directory structure would remain same.

Code:

COL_DATE,SER_NAME,TYPE_FILE,FILEFILENAME,FILE_STATUS
sysdate,d3,d4,abcd.txt,waiting
sysdate,d31,d42,pqrs.txt,waiting
sysdate,d32,d3,xyz.txt,waiting

I believe this can definitely be implemented with help of magic like awk or anything but not able to implement it.

Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

SS Baffle Plates

By kolias

I have noticed that all new gas BBQ‘s coming with these SS baffle plates on top of the burners and remember a few years back they used to have the burners covered only with these bricket like stones.

What was wrong with the bricket like stones and they switched to these SS baffle plates?

Personally I prefer the bricket like stones

The Capitalist Touch: Menswear Apparel And High-End Luxury Brand Hermès Looks To Vibrant Color And High-Performance

By Joseph DeAcetis, Forbes Staff

Menswear has let the bright hues of sun gracefully seep into its SS 2013 collections for the better priced labels. This season color has reflected the fiery reds and citrus colors seen throughout the luxury collections including sportswear, tailored clothing, jeans and even underwear. Accessories have seen a jolt of color this season as well, from belts and eye-wear to footwear- where the latter will make a well-grounded fancy-stance this season. The way to wear color is to play it off of neutrals so that the vibrancy can stand-out without looking too techno-driven. Certain colors flatter certain skin tones hence, in my opinion, the best advice is to try on the various choices available and see what makes you radiate for long summer days at the office or cool evening soirees by the sea. The point is to feel comfortable, give a fresh edge, and serve the needs of a new concept lifestyle.

Calculatin cumulative elapsed time from mm:ss.ss data

By ks_reddy

Hello all,

I got some time duration data like below and I want to compute the cumulative elapsed time. The data is in MM:SS.SS format. I got struck with logic on what to do when it changes from 59:59.ss to 00:00.ss.

Code:

59:59.4
59:59.6
59:59.9
00:00.1
00:00.4
00:00.6
00:00.9

I need the below cumulative elapsed time(in seconds) as output

Code:

0
0.2
0.5
0.7
1.0
1.2
1.5

In reality I have millions of rows in my file.
Any help on this is appreciated.
Thanks
Sidda

Report: Chevy moves to trademark Chevelle nameplate, but why?

By Steven J. Ewing

Chevrolet Code 130R concept - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

According to a report from GM Authority, General Motors has applied for a trademark on the “Chevelle” nameplate, filing the request under the “exterior badges for vehicles” category of the “goods and services” section of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. And while you certainly could argue that this is simply to protect the Chevelle nomenclature that represents a large part of Chevrolet history, GM Authority has a couple of good reasons why you might want to think otherwise.

First of all, GMA points out that companies don’t necessary file trademarks for the sake of keeping up on records. Basically, if a company wants to complete the registration of a trademark, it needs to file a legal document called a SOU (Statement of Use), which requests that the applicant show the current business reason for filing the trademark. That said, a company can prolong the time it has to file an SOU by up to three years which does, sort of, account for using the trademark on a future product.

But what sort of future product? GM Authority suggests – and stay with us here – that the Chevelle name could be applied to a new coupe to slot in above the Camaro but below the Corvette. In other words, Chevrolet could bring a version of the Code 130R concept (pictured) into production, call it the Camaro, and then have the Chevelle act as a replacement for the Camaro as we know it today, meaning the 130R-based car would instead take the shape of a sort of Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ fighter as we earlier reported.

Another option would be to slap the Chevelle name on the replacement for the Chevrolet SS sedan, which just made its introduction earlier this year. GM Authority states that the Holden VF Commodore on which the current SS is based will only be around for another three years, so this would still be within the timing of the trademark filing’s Statement of Use.

Of course, this could all be nothing – or it could be something else entirely. Only time will tell. Let us know what your best guess is in Comments.

2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 Reveal Stuns New York Auto Show

By Kurt Ernst

2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 – image: GM Corp

Thanks to spy photographers, loose-lipped employees and the speed of information on the internet, it’s virtually impossible for an automaker to tee up a surprise new product. Generally speaking, by the time something new does hit the auto show floor, it’s been dissected to a molecular level by journalists the world over, who will typically complain that it’s underpowered, devoid of interior style and utterly worthless since it won’t be sold in a station wagon variant.

When Chevy pulled the wraps off the 2014 Camaro Z/28 yesterday, few people saw it coming. Call it sleight of hand; after all, Chevy had recently dropped the all-new Corvette and Corvette convertible, along with its SS muscle sedan. We were expecting a moderate refresh for the 2014, not a dedicated track animal that’s capable of showing taillights to the almighty Camaro ZL1.

2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 - image: GM Corp

2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 – image: GM Corp

The 2014 Camaro Z/28 comes packing a tuned 7.0-liter LS7 V-8, liberated from the Corvette Z06 and rated at “at least” 500 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. If you’re looking for floppy-paddle shifting, look elsewhere, since the Z/28 comes only with a six-speed manual transmission. Final gearing is 3.91:1, which Chevy calls ideally matched to the LS7’s power output.

2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 - image: GM Corp

2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 – image: GM Corp

The Z/28’s suspension has been tuned to deliver 1.05 g worth of cornering capability, thanks to adjustable spool-valve dampers, stiffer spring rates and suspension bushings and 19-inch wheels with 305/30ZR19 tires that shave 42-pounds of the weight of the 20-inch units used on the ZL1. If that’s not enough to blow your mind, consider this: the Z/28 also gets carbon ceramic brakes (which sounds like a great idea until you price replacement rotors).

2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 - image: GM Corp

Weight savings is the key to the Z/28s performance, so the car deletes the audio system, sound deadening, tire inflator kit and air conditioning (which can be added back in as a stand-alone option). Window glass is reduced thickness, and neither HID headlights nor foglamps are available. The Z/28 retains its back seat, but eliminates the trunk pass-through and uses lightweight high-density foam. The net result is that the Z/28 weighs some 300 pounds less than the ZL1.

2014 Chevrolet Camaro: If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It—Much [2013 New York Auto Show]

By Austin Lindberg

2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS

Debuting at the 2013 New York auto show, Chevrolet’s 2014 Camaro refresh consists of three or four relatively minor changes. But that simple statement isn’t quite fair to the people behind the bow-tie pony car. Just last year, Chevy upgraded the interiors of the entire Camaro lineup, upgraded dampers and anti-roll bars on V-8–powered models to reduce understeer, and introduced the SS 1LE package and the ZL1 convertible. Besides, the Camaro team probably had its hands full engineering the all-new 500-hp, LS7-powered Z/28 that also dropped in the Big Apple. READ MORE ››

2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

Chevrolet’s Camaro lineup is becoming quite the haven for track-happy hooligans. And now comes the return of the iconic Z/28 nameplate, affixed to what GM is calling the “most track-capable Camaro ever.” READ MORE ››

New York: 2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 is back! [w/video]

By Chris Paukert

Filed under:

Remember when there was a bit of consternation among the Bowtie faithful after Chevrolet introduced the Camaro ZL1? The issue wasn’t around the big coupe’s awesome performance, it was with the name – many wondered why the company hadn’t chosen to exhume the company’s legendary Z/28 moniker. There was a bit less of an outcry when Chevy showed off the 1LE model, but only just. Well, apparently there’s a good reason why the Z/28 nameplate wasn’t used – because they were saving it for this bad boy.

Powered by Chevrolet’s 7.0-liter LS7 small block V8 (also found in the C7 Corvette), the 2014 Camaro Z/28 looks to offer massive performance above and beyond the already capable ZL1. Chevy hasn’t released official power ratings yet, saying only that the Z/28 will deliver “at least 500 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque” – the supercharged 6.2-liter LSA found in the ZL1 dispenses 580 horsepower, so the track-focused Z/28 probably won’t be the most powerful Camaro on offer.

Perhaps more importantly, curb weight is down 300 pounds compared to the ZL1 thanks to a comprehensive lightweighting program, including thinner rear glass and lighter wheels and making air conditioning an option. Chevy says that the weight cut and the institution of substantial chassis and braking changes are good enough to cut a whopping three seconds per lap off of the ZL1’s times, though it hasn’t specified what circuit it has been tested on.

Aero changes include a whopper of a front splitter tied to a lift-curbing undertray, along with flared fenders and rocker extensions. Out back, a unique spoiler and diffuser help keep the massive meats planted to the ground at high speeds.

Inside, the manual-transmission-only Z/28 gets the ZL1’s excellent flat-bottomed wheel and standard Recaro seats (already optional on SS and ZL1 models). The interior is finished in a matte-metallic finish dubbed Octane. Pricing has yet to be announced, but for all the details, scroll down to look at the lengthy official press release and to watch the car’s live unveiling. We recommend fast-forwarding to the 8:55 mark to hear the Z/28 get fired up.

Breaking: 2014 Chevy Camaro revealed… on a daytime talk show?

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

Filed under:

Listen, we like Kelly Ripa Kristen Chenoweth (Kelly is apparently on vacation) and Michael Strahan as much as the next auto-obsessed blogging website… but to reveal the new 2014 Chevy Camaro on the talk show ahead of its official unveiling at the New York Auto Show strikes us as a rather strange choice. Regardless, that’s what we’re dealing with – the talk show hosts were the first people to pull the covers off the new Camaro, and you can see the results above.

Additionally, one lone low-res image was published on the talk show website, and we enlarged it, reduced noise and sharpened it as much as we could. The original low-res version can be seen in the image gallery, as can a single shot of the interior, which sadly doesn’t appear to have gotten any major attention.

We don’t have any great views of the car from the screenshots that have hit the web, but from what we can tell, the changes made to the Camaro for 2014 are more noticeable than we had initially thought. For instance, the front fascia is completely new, with a grille insert that looks more condensed than before. The old mail-slot opening in the center of the face has been removed on the SS model, which is an update we’re okay with but is likely to be controversial.

The biggest change to the SS model is a new hood with what appears to be a functional heat extractor. The bright red Camaro seen on the talk show doesn’t have any stripes, and we’re curious to see how Chevy deals with these classic additions on SS models with this new hood. Out back, we note a new rear spoiler along with taillamps that lose some of the past model’s retro vibe in favor of a more modern, though still squared-off, look.

According to the show’s website, the 2014 Camaro’s powertrain options will carry over from 2013, with a 323-horsepower V6 and a 426-hp V8, along with the 580-horse supercharged ZL1. We suggest you take a gander at the image gallery above to form an initial opinion, but we’d also stress that many more high quality images will be coming from our crew in New York before too long.

Survivor recalls Dachau, where SS terror began 80 years ago

By hnn

Max Mannheimer will never forget the words of his block leader when he entered the gates of Dachau concentration camp on 6 August 1944. “You’re veterans at this by now,” said the prisoner, a communist. “You know that the most important thing is not to draw attention to yourselves if you want to survive.”

Behind Max, then aged 24, and his younger brother Edgar had lain a long and gruelling trudge through Nazi concentration camps, including Auschwitz and Theresienstadt, and the Warsaw ghetto, during which the siblings had lost their entire family, most of them in Auschwitz, simply for being Jewish.

In Dachau, Mannheimer was assigned the prisoner number 87098. “It was the last camp number I would ever have,” the 93-year-old said. “But I took the block leader’s message on board: ‘You’ve got this far, just keep your head down, as the SS will pounce on you for the smallest violation’.” He was liberated nine months later by US troops from a Dachau sub-camp, where one of his last jobs had been to cart the corpses of prisoners into the mortuary. Stricken with typhus, he had been reduced to skin and bones, weighing just 47kg. “I was a skeleton,” he said. “I cried with both joy and despair.”…
