This past May, my sweet dad Joe Caprino passed away at 92 from a long bout with cancer. He suffered from dementia too, and it was excruciating to watch this vibrant, brilliant and incredibly warm man slip away into the darkness. He was truly loved by many, and remembered as a helpful, gentle, affectionate man who always had a kind word and was an eternal optimist and life enthusiast (in fact, we called him “the funster”). His motto was, “If you don’t have anything kind to say about someone, don’t say anything at all.” (Here’s my Memorial Day tribute to him.) As I sat with him after he passed, I had thoughts that had never occurred to me before. The most powerful were all about what we leave behind in life, after all of our clamoring for success, money, accolades, joy, comfort, and love is done. How will we be remembered and what is the legacy we’re leaving behind? After 18 years in a corporate life that, for the most part, felt meaningless and unhappy to me, I’m thrilled to say that I’ve found more purpose now in my professional life than I could have ever hoped for (as a career coach, writer and trainer helping women advance). In terms of impact, I feel I’m on the right track, doing my best to be of service in a way that uses my talents to help others. A deeper question I ask, though, is “How will I be remembered?” What will people say, when I’m gone, about how I behaved, acted and responded, and the impact I had on others. Was I kind, caring, loving, supportive, enlivening and empowering? I certainly hope so, because these are traits I highly value in others, and truly wish to emulate. I believe that THE most important question you can ask yourself in life, to ensure that at the end, you won’t have regrets, is “How will I be remembered?” Knowing the answer to this question helps you live every day in a way that will result in what you truly want, rather than in emptiness, pain, and regret.
