Do You Know How People Will Remember You?

By Kathy Caprino, Contributor

This past May, my sweet dad Joe Caprino passed away at 92 from a long bout with cancer.  He suffered from dementia too, and it was excruciating to watch this vibrant, brilliant and incredibly warm man slip away into the darkness.   He was truly loved by many, and remembered as a helpful, gentle, affectionate man who always had a kind word and was an eternal optimist and life enthusiast (in fact, we called him “the funster”).  His motto was, “If you don’t have anything kind to say about someone, don’t say anything at all.” (Here’s my Memorial Day tribute to him.) As I sat with him after he passed, I had thoughts that had never occurred to me before.  The most powerful were all about what we leave behind in life, after all of our clamoring for success, money, accolades, joy, comfort, and love is done.  How will we be remembered and what is the legacy we’re leaving behind? After 18 years in a corporate life that, for the most part, felt meaningless and unhappy to me, I’m thrilled to say that I’ve found more purpose now in my professional life than I could have ever hoped for (as a career coach, writer and trainer helping women advance).  In terms of impact, I feel I’m on the right track, doing my best to be of service in a way that uses my talents to help others.     A deeper question I ask, though, is “How will I be remembered?”  What will people say, when I’m gone, about how I behaved, acted and responded, and the impact I had on others.  Was I kind, caring, loving, supportive, enlivening and empowering?  I certainly hope so, because these are traits I highly value in others, and truly wish to emulate. I believe that THE most important question you can ask yourself in life, to ensure that at the end, you won’t have regrets, is “How will I be remembered?” Knowing the answer to this question helps you live every day in a way that will result in what you truly want, rather than in emptiness, pain, and regret. How can you determine the legacy you’re leaving behind and how you’ll be remembered? Here are 10 ways to get the answers you need: …read more

6 Stocks that Stand Out in Today's Sizzling Stock Market

By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — It’s summertime and the stock market is sizzling. The market reached an all-time high last week, torching its previous record set just before Memorial Day.

Even so, a handful of companies stand out. Six stocks — Amazon, Starbucks, UnitedHealth, Visa, Mastercard, and Discover Financial — notched their own records last week, helped by the growing confidence of American consumers.

Would buying these stocks now be a hot-weather impulse or a coldly calculated move?

All six have improving earnings outlooks, analysts say. Credit-card companies and UnitedHealth appear to be the best bets.

The six companies share similar traits that make them attractive. They are consumer-focused, with dominant market positions and growing revenue streams, says Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co.

Their importance to shoppers is crucial to their growth prospects. Americans’ confidence in the economy has reached its highest point in 5½ years. The housing recovery is strengthening. Job growth continues at a steady pace.

When consumers feel better about the economy, they splurge on discretionary items like a Venti Caramel Macchiato from Starbucks or a new book or DVD from Amazon. And they pay for those items with credit cards.

Visa and UnitedHealth are the most attractive buys right now, says David Brown, chief market strategist at Sabrient Systems, an investment research firm.

The outlook for Discover and MasterCard is also good, particularly as consumer confidence improves. The companies’ biggest challenge remains staying competitive in a crowded field, he says.

While Brown expects Amazon to continue to dominate its market, he sees a big risk in buying the stock now.

“It’s a fine company, but I would want to enter it in a pullback — a big pullback,” Brown says. “It has, by far, the most downside.”

Here’s a brief summary of each stock:

UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH)

The stock of the nation’s largest health insurer has climbed more than 25 percent this year and hit an all-time high of $68.75 in trading Wednesday, according to FactSet.

Like other health insurers, UnitedHealth stands to benefit from the federal health care overhaul. The company will be able to participate in state-based health insurance exchanges designed to expand coverage to millions of uninsured Americans. The company is also the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans, which are privately run versions of the government’s Medicare program for the elderly and disabled people.

Financial analysts, on average, expect the stock to move higher. Their consensus target price is $71.47, according to FactSet.

On average, the stock has a “Buy” rating from analysts polled by FactSet.

Massachusetts veteran to spend Memorial Day remembering his military pilot wife

A Massachusetts veteran is planning to spend this Memorial Day remembering his Black Hawk pilot wife, who was killed in Afghanistan less than four months after they were married.

Chris Cullen married his wife Sara in November 2012 after resigning from his Army job last March so that they could be together, MyFoxBoston.com reported.

But on March 11, 2013, “basically, my world stopped,” Cullen told MyFoxBoston.com. Sara was killed in a training mission helicopter crash that also claimed the lives of three others.

“Someone knocked on the door at a time they shouldn’t have been there,” he said. “A million things run through your head, you just kind of shut down,” he told MyFoxBoston.com.

Sara didn’t even get the chance to see their completed wedding photos.

“She was a great American that gave her life for the country, for freedom, for everything the country stands for,” Cullen said.

On Memorial Day, Cullen said he hopes “that everyone can remember that they’re out there, not always able to celebrate the holidays and get to the beach, but that they remember them.”

Cullen will spend the weekend with this family as he continues to heal, MyFoxBoston.com reported.

Israel honors war dead with somber Memorial Day

Sirens have wailed across Israel bringing the country to a standstill for its Memorial Day for fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism.

Nationwide, Israelis stopped what they were doing at 11:00 a.m. Monday and stood silently for two minutes to honor and remember the dead.

It is one of the most somber dates on the Israeli calendar. Israel says 23,085 security personnel have been killed since 1860, when Jews began moving back to the area.

Places of entertainment shut. Radio and TV air documentaries about wars and soldiers killed.

The sad atmosphere ends sharply at sundown when in jarring contrast, Israelis joyfully take to the streets for independence day celebrations.

Sirens also brought the country to a halt last week for Israel‘s Holocaust memorial day.

Israel at 65: Success still plagued by uncertainty

In 65 years, Israel has surpassed the dreams of its founders, emerging as the Middle East‘s strongest military force, a global high-tech powerhouse and a prosperous homeland for the Jewish people.

Yet it remains a divided society, and its most intractable problem — peace with its Arab neighbors — has yet to be resolved.

On the eve of the 65th anniversary of its creation, the Jewish renaissance in the Holy Land remains a work in progress.

Dominating the short term is Iran‘s nuclear program, which Israel believes is aimed at developing an atomic weapon that could be used against the Jewish state, despite Iranian denials. Unrest along Israel‘s borders is equally worrisome.

Over the longer term, reaching peace with the Palestinians remains elusive, with the sides unable to agree even on how to restart negotiations. Palestinians consider creation of Israel a catastrophe that caused a stubborn refugee problem.

The 46-year occupation of Palestinian territories also ignites domestic and international tensions. Without a partition, Arabs could one day outnumber Jews, threatening Israel‘s democratic nature.

Israel began observing its annual Memorial Day on Sunday evening, honoring fallen soldiers and victims of militant attacks. At 8 p.m., air raid sirens sounded nationwide to mark a minute of silence. A two-minute siren was set for Monday morning.

At sundown Monday, the country abruptly shifts its mood to mark its 65th Independence Day with fireworks, military processions and picnics. The transformation from grief to joy is an annual ritual meant to show the link between the sacrifices and the accomplishments.

“Today there are also those who rise up against us and threaten to destroy us. They did not succeed in the past, and they will never succeed,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a Memorial Day ceremony Sunday. Netanyahu’s older brother, Yonatan, was killed in a military operation in 1976.

Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948, marking the date each year on the Hebrew calendar. Since then, it has been in a constant state of conflict with its neighbors, most recently eight days of exchanges last November with Palestinian militants firing rockets from the Gaza Strip. It has signed peace treaties with just two Arab nations, Egypt and Jordan.

Yet the country

'The Hangover 3' vs. 'Fast & Furious 6' in Summer 2013's Dumbest Movie Face-Off

By Scott Mendelson, Contributor

Coming off relatively successful prior installments, both The Hangover part III and Fast and Furious 6 could arguably be expected to secure two of the bigger opening weekends of the summer 2013 season.  The Hangover part III opened with $85 million over its Fri-Sun portion of its Memorial Day weekend 2011 debut, pulling in a total of $137 million over its Thursday-to-Monday debut, good for the second-best five-day total and Fri-Sun total for an R-rated film (behind the $144 million five-day total and $91 million Fri-Sun debut of The Matrix Reloaded).  Fast Five opened with $86 million during the last weekend of April 2011, a record for an April debut and the largest Fri-Sun opening in Universal’s history.  Both films earned over $200 million domestic and well-over $500 million worldwide.  The sheer goodwill for Fast Five sets Fast & Furious 6 up for a monster debut under normal circumstances.  And if critics and (to a lesser extent) audiences felt that The Hangover part II was basically a warmed-over remake of The Hangover, the promise if both a very different kind of plot and the fact that this is absolutely the finale of this particular trilogy arguably compensates with most of the burn out from part II.  So yeah, under normal circumstances, both of these films targeted mostly young men would be on course for sky-high debuts.  Except these are not normal circumstances.  Both of these films are opening on the exact same day, over this upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

Can 20th Century Fox and Dreamworks combined challenge the Disney animation empire?

By Scott Mendelson, Contributor

During the summer of 2013, there will be six animated (or live-action/animated hybrid) entries.  At a glance, it would seem like healthy competition as each of the major current players are offering an official entry into the summer box office sweepstakes.  You’ve got 20th Century Fox taking a shot at proving they can do more than Ice Age sequels, delivering the somewhat on-the-nose-titled Epic over Memorial Day weekend.  Pixar unleashes their official summer entry, the Monsters Inc. prequel Monsters University on June 21st.  Universal delivers its trump card with Despicable Me 2 over July 4th weekend while Dreamworks releases its snail-racing comedy Turbo on July 17th, a frankly unusual release date for them, but no matter.  Sony delivers The Smurfs 2 on July 31st while Disney offers up the previously straight-to-DVD entry Planes on August 9th. …read more

Wear White Immediately — We’ll Show You How (PHOTOS)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

The old adage that wearing white before Memorial Day is declassé has gone the way of the dinosaur. There’s no reason that you can’t take a page from celebrities like Charlize Theron, Amanda Seyfried and Jennifer Lawrence, who all just donned white at the Oscars. All it takes is a few pieces to winterize your look.

It’s important to remember that white comes in different shades: you could try a cream-colored coat, an off-white cableknit sweater and eggshell leather pants. Our only tip? Carry that Tide pen for when your lunch misses your mouth. And these pieces are easy to transition to spring: Just lose the tights and the heavy shoes in exchange for sandals or ballet flats. The best part about wearing white after Labor Day is that it’s a nice surprise when everyone else is wearing black. What’s not to love?

Check out our take on wearing white in winter, as well as some tips on how to transition these outfits to spring:

Holidays, politics seen as clues on NKorean timing

Without confirmation of when North Korea might carry out its vow to conduct its third nuclear test, the building suspense has prompted outsiders to look at dates Pyongyang has chosen for past atomic tests and rocket and missile launches.

Dates and numbers are important to North Korea‘s government, and Pyongyang has often used what Washington calls “provocative acts” to send unsubtle messages to its main enemies — Washington and Seoul — by staging them around U.S. holidays and important political events in South Korea. They have also used them to give a nationalistic boost to North Korean citizens, favoring significant milestones of the state, party and ruling Kim family.

Here’s a look at the “meaningful dates” North Korea has selected in the past for past tests and launches, as well as future events on which Pyongyang might choose to conduct a test:

U.S. HOLIDAYS AND POLITICAL EVENTS:

Both previous nuclear tests were conducted as Americans celebrated U.S. holidays: Oct. 9, 2006, was Columbus Day; May 25, 2009, was Memorial Day.

North Korea also conducted missile tests during Independence Day celebrations in the United States on July 4, 2006. And just a few months after Obama‘s first inauguration in 2009, North Korea launched a long-range rocket.

Some speculate that Pyongyang might choose the celebration of Washington’s Birthday on Feb. 18, a federal holiday in the U.S., to carry out its atomic threat. South Korea‘s foreign minister suggested President Barack Obama‘s State of the Union address on Feb. 12 could be another possible test date.

SOUTH KOREAN POLITICAL EVENTS:

North Korea has used past inaugurations and elections in archrival Seoul to test its missiles and launch rockets. South Korean President-elect Park Geun-hye will be inaugurated Feb. 25.

Last year’s successful Dec. 12 long-range rocket launch, which was condemned by the U.N. as a cover for a banned missile test, came just a week before South Koreans went to the polls to choose a new president.

North Korea fired a short-range missile on the eve of former liberal President Roh Moo-hyun’s 2003 inauguration. Days before, a North Korean jet also intruded into South Korean airspace over the Yellow Sea, turning back as warplanes in South Korea scrambled.

In 1998, six months after liberal South Korean President Kim Dae-jung took office, North Korea launched what it said was a rocket carrying a satellite.

NORTH KOREAN MILESTONES:

A failed North Korean rocket test last year fell on April 12, just days before the April 15 celebration of the centennial of the birth of national founder Kim Il Sung.

The 2006 nuclear test also came a day before the 61st anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers’ Party.

North Korea has repeatedly sought to link the legacy of late leader Kim Jong IlKim Il Sung‘s son and the father of current leader Kim Jong Un — to the development of its nuclear program. His birthday falls on Feb. 16. Two days before that, Feb. 14, is the anniversary of Kim Jong Il being posthumously named Generalissimo.

Jersey Shore boardwalk reconstruction given OK in storm-hit town

The iconic boardwalk where generations of families and teens got their first taste of the Jersey Shore and where the reality show of the same name was filmed is being rebuilt following its destruction in Superstorm Sandy.

Seaside Heights on Wednesday awarded a $3.6 million contract to have the boardwalk rebuilt in time for Memorial Day weekend.

The Seaside Heights walkway was one of the most popular and heavily used boardwalks at the shore. It was featured in the MTV reality show made famous by Snooki and The Situation. It was destroyed in the October storm. Officials say it’s the centerpiece of the borough’s tourist industry, which funds 75 percent of its budget.

The work should be done by May 10.

Seaside Heights is the second major boardwalk to begin rebuilding. Belmar started work on its walkway last week.

Wal-Mart to hire vets, boost US sourcing

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s largest retailer and nation’s largest private employer, is making a pledge to boost its sourcing from domestic suppliers and hire more than 100,000 veterans.

The plans were to be announced as part of an address by Bill Simon, president and CEO of Wal-Mart’s U.S. business, at an annual retail industry convention in New York.

The company, based in Bentonville, Ark., says it plans to buy an additional $50 billion in U.S. products over the next 10 years. According to data from Wal-Mart’s suppliers, items that are made, sourced or grown in the U.S. account for about two-thirds of the company’s spending on products for its U.S. business.

Wal-Mart also projects that it will hire more than 100,000 recently discharged veterans in the next five years. Honorably discharged veterans will have a “place to go”, says Wal-Mart’s Simon, according to prepared text supplied by the discounter. The hiring pledge, which will begin on Memorial Day, covers veterans within 12 months of leaving active duty. Most of the jobs will be in Wal-Mart’s stores or its Sam’s club locations. Some will be in the company’s distribution centers.

“Let’s be clear; hiring a veteran can be one of the best decisions any of us can make,” Simon plans to say in his address to retailers gathered on the third day of the four-day National Retail Federation convention. “Veterans have a record of performance under pressure. They’re quick learners, and they’re team players. These are leaders with discipline, training, and a passion for service. There is a seriousness and sense of purpose that the military instills, and we need it today more than ever.”

Wal-Mart says it believes it is already the large private employer of veterans in the country.

The company says that it has spoken to the White House about its commitment, and said the First Lady Michelle Obama‘s team has already expressed an interest in working with Wal-Mart and with the rest of the business community.

In the next several weeks, the White House will convene the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense and major U.S. employers to encourage businesses to make significant commitments to train and employ American’s returning veterans, according to Simon’s prepared text.

First lady Michelle Obama, who spearheaded a White House drive to encourage businesses to hire veterans, praised Wal-Mart’s announcement, calling it “historic.”

“We all believe that no one who serves our country should have to fight for a job once they return home,” Mrs. Obama said in the statement. “Wal-Mart is setting a groundbreaking example for the private sector to follow.”

Wal-Mart which also operates Sam’s Clubs, employs more than 1.4 million workers in the U.S.

Simon was also set to announce at the retail convention that the company would help part-time workers transition to full-time status if they so desired.

“We will also bring more transparency to our scheduling system so part-time workers can choose more hours for themselves,” Simon said was to say.

The moves could help repair the company’s image, following allegations that its Mexico unit was handing out bribes to local officials to speed up getting building permits and gain other favors. According to emails recently released by lawmakers, CEO Mike Duke found out in 2005 about the bribes. Lawmakers say that contradicts earlier claims by the company that executives weren’t aware of the bribes made by the company.

Allegations first surfaced in April that Wal-Mart failed to notify law enforcement that company officials authorized the bribes. Wal-Mart has been working with government officials in the U.S. and Mexico on that investigation.
