Wreck-it Ralph Blu-ray Review

By Chris Carle

Never has the marriage of video games and movies been as loving as in Wreck-It Ralph, and any self-respecting gamer should see it as soon as possible. I reviewed the original theatrical release and rated it very highly, calling it (among other things) “the best video game movie ever made.” Now, after subsequent viewings, it holds up beautifully. This is a love letter to gaming and gamers and one of the best animated films of the past decade.

Watch the video review below:

In addition to the feature film, the package also includes the Academy Award-winning short Paperman, which showed in from the movie in theaters. It’s a masterpiece of storytelling; showcasing a simple story of flirtation and love without a lick of dialogue, and the short’s inclusion in this set raises the value even higher.

Best Animated Film: ‘Brave’ Wins At 2013 Academy Awards

Watch a Deleted Scene From Wreck-It Ralph

IGN recently caught up with Wreck-It Ralph director Rich Moore to talk about the film’s upcoming Blu-ray release, which features a never before seen animatic depicting one of the story’s dropped video game worlds, Extreme EZ Livin’ 2. The filmmaker also gave us an update on the sequel and his thoughts on what he’d like to see in a potential followup. (Dragon’s Lair and Angry Birds, anyone?)

But first thing’s first. Check out this exclusive deleted scene from the Blu-ray, which arrives this Tuesday, February 12:

IGN Movies: So I first want to discuss this deleted scene and Extreme EZ Livin’ 2. Can you talk a bit about the context of this clip, the Bobby Dunderson character, and how it originally fit into the story?

Director Wants Tron in Wreck-It Ralph 2

Wreck-It Ralph director Rich Moore says one character who they’d hoped to have cameo in the first movie but didn’t could end up being in Wreck-It Ralph 2. And who’s that? Why, none other than Tron (played on the big screen and on the small screen’s TRON: Uprising by Bruce Boxleitner).

“I can’t specifically remember why that

didn’t happen,” Moore told ComingSoon. “Of course, with a sequel, I’m hoping that we can find a way to see Tron himself in that movie.”

One thing going in the cameo’s favor is that Tron is a Disney-owned property so hopefully that could help when it comes to rights issues.

Win An 8-Bit Pigeon With Wreck-It Ralph

Disney’s video game-inspired animated 3D movie Wreck-It Ralph is opening in UK cinemas next Friday, the 8th of February. To celebrate the arrival of the film that IGN called “the best video game movie ever made”, Disney has given us an amazing ‘money can’t buy’ prize to give away.

Last month, Disney took over London‘s famous Brick Lane and gave it a Wreck-It Ralph makeover using a whole load of cool pixellated sculptures to create 8-Bit Lane, which you can read all about it in my blog post here, or even take a virtual tour via 8bitlane.co.uk.

Skylanders Franchise Has Earned $500 Million

The Skylanders franchise has earned more than $500 million in sales in the United States alone. The figure includes sales of games, figures and accessory packs and Activision notes that the franchise has reached the milestone “faster than any other kids’ gaming property.”

Skylanders figures “have outsold the top action figure lines in the toy category in the U.S., outselling such popular toy lines as Beyblades, WWE and Star Wars” according to Activision. Skylanders Giants alone has brought in $195 million in U.S. sales, outgrossing 2012 movies such as Wreck-It Ralph and Rise of the Guardians.

“Just a year ago, the concept of bringing toys to life in a virtual world was an untested play pattern that Activision and Toys For Bob believed in. Now the category has been established in the market and embraced by parents and kids everywhere,” said Activision Publishing vice president of product management Joshua Taub. “We’re humbled by the continued support and acclaim from parents, kids and critics alike, but more importantly, it’s gratifying to see kids excited about the adventures that await them both in the digital and physical worlds.”

Wreck-It Ralph Leveling Up for a Sequel?

According to stars John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman, as well as director Rich Moore, fans can expect to see more Wreck-It Ralph in the near future.
In a recent interview with Moviehole, the trio revealed that a sequel to Disney’s video game-inspired animated feature was extremely likely.
“There will be ,” said Silverman. Added Reilly, “They wouldn’t make merchandise, if didn’t have plans for other stories.”
“Some of the big muckety-muckets at the studio, who I just saw the other night, were like ‘We’re talking sequel!'” Reilly continued. “The movie made $150 million dollars in eleven days, it broke the box-office record for Disney animated movies on opening weekend. If that’s any indication that we’ll be doing a sequel… I bet we’ll be doing a sequel.”
