ShootMania Storm Review

Few moments in a competitive first-person shooter feel as good as nailing someone with a rocket from across the map. It’s a satisfaction that comes from knowing that you not only had swift reflexes and precise aim, but that you out-thought him and knew exactly where he planned to be before he did. That’s the sensation that ShootMania Storm is built around. Its humble graphics are deceptively simple, as its modes incorporate some really clever ideas that make it a tense and unique experience, at least for a little while.

This is a PC shooter through and through, and that has both good and bad connotations. On the one hand, it’s packed full of little options missed by most modern shooters, from dedicated servers and LAN play to the ability to individually choose the color of every letter in your player name. There are so many of these old-school features, in fact, that the absence of a server ping indicator on the server browser is extremely strange. On the other hand, there’s a general lack of UI polish and consistency. The flashy tile-based main menu screen that looks like something designed to run on an iPad, which makes no sense for a mouse-and-keyboard shooter, and the moment you go down a level into the server browsers and options it switches to a totally different, cluttered, and less-than-intuitive style.

Belden’s Lumberg Automation Brand Adds the LioN-R Series for PROFINET and EtherNet/IP Applications

ST. LOUIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Belden Inc., a global leader in signal transmission solutions for mission-critical applications, has extended its Lumberg Automation product line in the Americas region to include three new I/O modules featuring industrial protection class IP67. They provide secure connection between actuators/sensors and control units even under the harshest environmental conditions. Providing additional support for real-time (RT) and isochronous real-time (IRT) communication, the modules offer 16 digital channels configured as inputs, outputs or a combination of both. All versions come with an encapsulated metal housing, vibration-resistant M12 connection technology and short-circuit proof outputs. Galvanic separation between the I/O channels and the LAN connection ensures reliable data transmission. The behavior of output channels in the event of a fault can be defined via a fail-safe function (PROFINET). What’s more, the easy diagnostics concept allows faults to be located swiftly. An integrated dual-port switch (10/100 Mbit/s) allows both line and ring topologies.

Designed to operate in more extreme environments, the I/O modules have an operating temperature range of -10°C to +60°C and a 24VDC power supply for industrial environments.

Both LAN ports are equipped with four-pole M12 connectors with D coding. The 16 I/O sockets, each of which can send and/or receive two digital signals, have five-pole A-coded M12 connectors. To prevent confusion, both the I/O connectors and the network ports are color-coded.

The IP address for the modules is set up via the BOOTP or DHCP protocol. The controller user interfaces can be used for direct configuration of the modules. The optimum arrangement of the I/O slots makes them easy to use, even with T distributors.

Hiyam Wakeem, product manager for Lumberg Automation, adds insight to the LioN-R for PROFINET: “Key differentiator features relative to the competition are the fail safe function, high temperature range and full galvanic isolation. LioN-R can be integrated with the Lumberg LioN-Link product offering.”

She goes on to add, “LioN-R modules for the EtherNet/IP application are ruggedized and provide maximum security for EtherNet/IP data communication, guaranteeing highly productive machines and systems.”

Adtran's Looking Like a Bargain

By Richard Saintvilus, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

“How much worse can things get?” is never a glowing endorsement. But in the case of Adtran , it’s hard to not like the company’s prospects after it lost 34% of its value in 2012. But Adtran was not alone. It was one of several names (including Alcatel-Lucent) that suffered in the poor carrier-spending environment. But these shares look interesting. And with continued improvement in its business and consumer demand, Adtran could be one of the best bargains in the sector.

In-line quarter was as good as a beat
When Oracle picked-off Acme Packet , I started canvassing the sector to figure out who was next. I thought it signaled consolidation. And considering Acme Packet‘s tough time — posting soft revenue due to its heavy reliance on carriers — Adtran was as good a candidate as any. Adtran’s fourth-quarter results weren’t great, either, but were in line with expectations. Revenue dropped 20% year over year and 13.7% sequentially.

As has been the case with larger players like Cisco , Adtran’s enterprise hardware was heavily affected, down 6% year over year. But the company was able to offset the slowdown with growth from dealer channels. And I think this area will be key this year — and as Adtran is assessed in the future. Likewise, the company is making strides with value-added resale channels, which increased 12%, helped by growing demand of the Bluesocket wireless LAN product.

Adtran continues to be underestimated for its technology. While this company is not flashy and doesn’t generate headlines, it does not mean it lacks in innovation or demand. Both broadband access and Internetworking haven’t performed as well lately. But these are good businesses that should see a revival going forward. However, the weak spending environment really took a toll on a sequential basis. Even so, broadband surged 100% year over year. Surprisingly, though, amid tough fiscal concerns overseas, Adtran posted 9% growth in international revenue.

This quarter was far from robust. But it was consistent with what the Street has been seeing from the likes of F5 Networks and the aforementioned Acme Packet. In-line results in this environment are wins, as far as I’m concerned. And it seems investors seem to agree. The stock has been up as much as 14% since the announcement.

Where’s this company going?
I’ve always liked Adtran. But its lack of aggressiveness and conservative approach gets lost in sector that is dominated by big egos. The company’s acquisition of the Broadband Access Business — or BBA— from Nokia Siemens, which completed last year, was a welcome signal that perhaps things are beginning to change. I think this company has a chance to become a leader within a recovering industry.

For Adtran, the good news is that it has three prominent carriers in VerizonQwest, and AT&T, which account for close to 55% of the company’s revenue. It also signals an overreliance. Oracle didn’t care much, even though 80% of Acme Packet‘s revenue relies on carriers. But trying …read more

Chile's president unpopular despite great economy

Chile announced another drop in unemployment on Thursday, along with low inflation and fast growth, numbers most leaders can only dream after a global economic crisis. But President Sebastian Pinera’s popularity remains in the dumps.

The Andean country’s jobless rate fell to 6.1 percent in the last quarter of 2012, the lowest in nearly six years, thanks to seasonal farm jobs and a fast economic expansion, the government said. The world’s top copper producer closed the year with 5.5 percent growth and kept inflation at just 1.5 percent, way under the central bank’s target.

“Since this government began, 740,000 new jobs have been created,” Pinera told reporters on Thursday. “This year salaries rose more than double the rate during the previous government.”

And yet, Pinera remains the most unpopular Chilean leader since Gen. Augusto Pinochet.

Polls show Chileans are mostly satisfied with the economic progress, but social protests have taken their toll on the presidency. Many remain unpersuaded by Pinera, a billionaire who in 2010 became the country’s first democratically elected right-wing ruler in 52 years.

As Pinera begins his last year in office, nothing seems to change their minds.

Survey results released Wednesday showed Pinera closed 2012 with a dismal 31 percent approval rating, even though 53 percent have a positive perception of their country’s standing.

Factors conspiring against Pinera include “enormous hope built up during his campaign in the form of promises that people say have not been met these years,” said Gustavo Martinez, a political analyst and director of the institute for public opinion at Universidad de Chile.

During Pinera‘s first days in office, he said extreme poverty would be eradicated by 2014, and that he would accomplish more in days than his predecessors managed in years.

Pinera began just after Chile suffered one of the strongest earthquakes in recorded history, and spent much of his time leading the reconstruction. Then, long-simmering social protests over education, Mapuche Indian issues and the environment exploded on his watch.

Pinera’s personality, on display during what was perhaps excessive media exposure, and some gaffes contributed to his low numbers, Martinez said. And several cabinet members have been accused of conflicts of interests and other scandals.

One of Chile‘s richest businessmen, Pinera was criticized for delaying the sale of his 26 percent stake in LAN, the country’s flagship airline. He ultimately sold it for about $1.5 billion.

Martinez doubts Pinera can turn around his popularity ratings during his last 13 months in office, but he expects a successful legacy to turn that around in future years. “There will be some recognition to a mandate that has not been popular,” he said.

Marco Moreno, a political analyst at Universidad Central, blames “a lack of trust and credibility” in the president.

“This is the result of members of the government, and Pinera himself, being involved in a series of situations where they have been questioned because of a conflict of interest,” he said.

Review: Switch lets you shut down any Windows computer remotely, even using Twitter

You know what’s frustrating? When something that’s supposed to be really simple turns out to be complicated to the point of impossibility. For example, remotely shutting down a Windows computer: This is not rocket science. In fact, it’s something built into Windows, and Microsoft even provides an extra tool for free, to make it easier. Yet try as I might, I couldn’t get either of these tools to work. I spent hours perusing forums and tweaking firewall settings, user accounts, group policies, and anything else I could think of–and I still couldn’t shut down my computer remotely. That is, until I installed $9 utility Switch.

Switch presents a beautiful, simple Web-based interface for shutting down the computer remotely.

Switch was a breath of fresh air. Finally, something simple that just does what it’s supposed to do. With Switch installed, I could shut down my file server using any computer on my LAN, without installing any client software. All I needed was a regular Web browser, which I’d just point at the file server’s IP address. Switch shows up as a pretty webpage with a Shut Down button. Click the button, and the computer running Switch goes bye-bye. It’s that simple.

Of course, that’s not everything Switch does: That Shut Down button has a drop-down component that can be used to reboot the computer or make it go to sleep. It can also do all three operations (shut down, reboot, and sleep) after a ten-minute delay–not something I’d personally use, but the option is there.

You can use Switch for setting up automated shutdowns.

You can also use Switch to automate shutdowns. The simplest example is shutting down the computer at a set time: It took me less than a minute to set up a rule that shuts down my file server every day at 5am. You can have more sophisticated rules–Switch can monitor the list of running processes and take action as soon as a certain process (application) starts up or terminates. It can also listen for a tweet from your account (or any account you choose) containing specific text, which means you can shut down your computer remotely from anywhere without setting up any special Firewall rules or using a custom client.

Halo 2 PC Servers Shutting Down Next Month

343 Industries has announced that Halo 2 PC multiplayer will shut down on February 15th. In a post on Halo Waypoint, 343 noted that “we’ve been monitoring the population for months, and it’s been peaking consistently at approximately 20 players or less. Those that own this game can continue to enjoy Multiplayer over LAN after that date; however our network services will be turned off at that time.”

“We love you, Halo 2 PC, and you will live forever in our hearts,” 343 concluded.

Halo 2’s Xbox servers were shut down in April 2010, though that didn’t prevent some people from managing to play for a few extra weeks. Before 343 took over the Halo franchise, Bungie revealed that more than 5.4 billion games of Halo 2 were played online.

Snmp and NAT

By neutrino

Hello,

I am facing this scenario: three or more remote LAN (peripheral offices), with the same devices (printers, NAS) in each of them. Those LANs have the same network addresses, i.e.192.168.1.* (are connected to WAN via NAT).

I need to collect snmp traps from a central server (public IP).

Question: how can I distinguish traps sent from two devices in different remote locations? Suppose I receive a trap from printer HP2605 with IP 192.168.1.50: I have two or more printers HP2605, same IP, in different remote offices.
Which one has generated the trap?

If you think, even for a single LAN the proble arises: two or more identical laptops in DHCP, sending traps to a server: how recognize the device sending the trap, if IPs are dynamic?

Many thank for thinking with me.

RIM licenses Nokia technology to settle patent claim

Nokia has signed a new patent license agreement with Research In Motion, which will end all existing patent litigation between the two companies.

RIM will make a one-time payment and ongoing payments to Nokia, but the specific financial terms of the agreement are confidential, Nokia said in a statement on Friday.

The deal seems to have come together quickly.

In November, Nokia asked a California court to enforce an arbitration award that could have prevented RIM from selling products with wireless LAN capabilities until the companies agreed on patent royalty rates, according to documents obtained by IDG News Service.
