GNUnify 2013 was awesome

This is a month of FOSS events – and one of them was GNUnify 2013 at Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies and Research. There were talks ranging from systems stuff like GCC, about Android hacking to KDE development. We met people from communities of KDE, Mozilla, Wikimedia, friends from RedHat and of course the awesome awesome organizers and volunteers.

It is nice to see a Free Software event like GNUnify to turn into a tradition where teachers and students work hard to create what is rightly said a forum to unite open minds.

Day1 of the event had lots of talks including our very own KDE – we planned a full day track on KDE primarily aimed to introduce people to KDE (and Open Source in general) and give them starting tips on how to get started. The talks started with introduction of Qt and a hands-on where people tried writing sample applications. Something new here was that we had to cover QtQuick/QML which these days is the preferred way of doing GUI in Qt, but at the same time we couldn’t leave out the traditional QWidget style of doing GUI. This was primarily because of two reasons, first most of the current KDE applications are written in QWidget so people will need that if they want to contribute and secondly the desktop components of QML still aren’t widely used.

Pradeepto on KDE

We started with the Qt talk and the hands-on was very well received by the attendees. They tried Qt Creator and created sample apps, winning KDE.in tshirts in the process šŸ˜€ After lunch Sinny talked about and gave a demo on using QtQuick/QML for writing fluid and modern GUI. This was followed by a talk on getting started with KDE development where we demo’ed a small hack in rekonq (a KDE browser based on WebKit) so that people get confident that its pretty easy to get started. We also spent an hour or so in answering questions that people had in mind about contributing.

The organizers were kind enough to arrange a pool-side dinner for us and it turned out to be a nice opportunity to socialize more, and meet all of the volunteers at one place. And whats more, I got a chance to be picture’d with the ą¤¹ą„ˆą¤•ą¤° laugh

Day2 saw talks on various kinds of topics like Android, Python, Drupal etc and I gave a Plasma Active demo to a group of volunteers. After Day1 which was kinda tiring due to the day long session, the 2nd day was quite fun with meeting friends again and chatting over lots of stuff šŸ™‚ Not only this, we had a nice evening and dinner, thanks to Siteshwar.

Thumbnail

Kscope4 1.7.0
(KDE Development Tool)
Kscope4-1.7.0 is the port to KDE4 / Qt4 of Kscope-1.6.0 by Elad Lahav, a GUI frontend for cscope.

This is intended to search a set of files, call a `project’ for the definition or the usage of a function or a variable, a text. All the cscope commands are usable and a graph part is available to visualize the link between calling and called functions.

Build process requires KDE4 & Qt4; the `graph’ feature requires Qt3Support and Dot & Graphviz packages to be installed.

At runtime, Kscope4 needs cscope & a `ctags like’ binary

An online documentation will be created during build process.

Attach Solaris 11.1 rwn driver to RaLink RT8200/8260 Wi Fi Adapter

By JWH

I installed Solaris 11.1 on a X86 PC. It’s working except for one glaring problem : I cannot get a driver attached to the RaLink RT2800 (Wi Fi Adapter). Can someone point me in the direction where ” the correct” driver exists, or let me know how I can tell Solaris to attach the device to the existing rwn driver (which looks correct to me)?

Any help much appreciated.

The output below from several commands reflects the system recognizes the Wi Fi Adapter as a RT2800/2860 and has a driver for the RT2800, but that there is no driver attached.

First the simple commands with simple and obvious output:

R-Drive Image 4.7

While some companies spend a lot of time and effort adding fringe features that few users will ever need, or gussying up the interface and calling it a major upgrade, R-Tools Technology spends its time making sure its programs are fast and work correctly. Case in point: R-Drive Image 4.7. While the GUI is simple (but easy to learn and use), the feature-list is not: full, incremental, and differential backups; compression; disk cloning; encryption; and support for Windows Dynamic Disks (a bugaboo with some imaging programs) and BSD slices (Linux partitions); split files; optical media support; file system conversion.

Every feature worked fine in my testing. The program is fast, and I particularly liked the way R-Drive Image mounts a backup image. With R-Drive Image, you use the program itself to mount the image as a read-only virtual drive with its own drive letter. This eliminates a background process when you don’t need it, and renders the backup complete searchable using standard Windows methods. I can’t begin to tell you how much time I’ve wasted restoring True Image backups simply so I could search them for a vital file a customer had to have right away.

The Linux-based, bootable CD (or floppies if you wish) that R-Drive Image creates hearkens back to the 80’s and early 90’s with a character-based interface. It looks quaint, but it has the latest drivers for USB and SATA, as well as mouse support. Also, because it doesn’t have to deal with graphics drivers or a bitmapped GUI, R-Drive image boots very quickly.

Networking support is this program’s weak point. Using the boot disc to back up over the network involves configuring your Ethernet adapter, entering server IP addresses as well as the share name of the location you’re imaging to, plus any applicable passwords. There’s no network browsing, even after configuring the adapter so you must have this info on hand. Also, the help file is curiously lacking, well… help on the topic. Hence, if you don’t understand what I just wrote, don’t buy this program for imaging across a network.

Charles Profitt: Wireframe Options

Recently I became involved in Ubuntu Friendly and one of the tools I wanted was a wireframe application so I could make quick mockups moving forward. I learned about several options:

  • Pencil – Pencil is built for the purpose of providing a free and open-source GUI prototyping tool that people can easily install and use to create mockups in popular desktop platforms.
  • Wireframe Sketcher – WireframeSketcher is a wireframing tool that helps designers, developers and product managers quickly create wireframes, mockups and prototypes for desktop, web and mobile applications. It’s a desktop app and a plug-in for any Eclipse IDE.
  • Balsamiq – Using Mockups feels like drawing, but because it’s digital, you can tweak and rearrange easily. Teams can come up with a design and iterate over it in real-time in the course of a meeting.

I eliminated Balsamiq because it requires Adobe Air (which is no longer being developed for Linux).

Pencil:
I found working with Pencil very easy to create the mockup of Ubuntu Friendly. Pencil included resources for Windows, Android, iOS and Web Applications. The drawing produced is very clear and does not simulate being drawn by hand. I had one rather important issue with Pencil; it would not export the mockup as a .png. The dialog box would come up and you would take the steps to save a file, but no file was actually saved. When making a .pdf file the table resource was not rendered.

Screenshot from 2013-02-03 12:50:43

Wireframe Sketcher:
Working with Wireframe Sketcher was not quite as easy as Pencil, nor were there as many built-in resources. The program had no tool to create a table. The resulting sketches simulate being drawn by hand and the program was able to export .png files. This software is also not free and will cost roughly $100.

uf-wireframe

In the end Wireframe Sketcher is the winner as it is able to create functional mockups without requiring Adobe Air or Java and was able to successfully save .png versions. An added feature, that I will not make use of, is that it works with Ecplipse IDE as well. If you are comfortable with Eclipse, or even Visual Studio, the application will be comfortable immediately.

wireframe-sketcher

The IDE style allows you to build an application with multiple screens and even have the screens be interactive. All the other mockup programs I tried lacked this depth. The program even allows for custom made svg images to be used as additional shapes or icons.

If you are an Ubuntu User like I am you can find it in the Ubuntu Software Center.

UNIX without GUI

By Omar_M

Hello guys,

I am new to Unix, because of low RAM, i want to install Unix terminal (command line) without the GUI. Basically, i want to install two Unix OS (without the GUI) on VMware and make a TCP connection between them. I have a total of 2GB RAM on the host computer running window 7, so i want a light version of Unix so that it all runs smoothly. Can anyone provide a download link for such non GUI version of Unix? and if it is not too much to ask could you also provide a guide for such connection. Thanks in advance.

Daniel Holbach: Ubuntu Developer Week is back

The times for Ubuntu have never been more exciting. Cloud, server, desktop, laptop, TV, tablet, phone – everything runs Ubuntu or is soon going to. This makes developing Ubuntu very special, because fixes which go into Ubuntu in one place will benefit all form factors and all circumstances where it’s used. By improving Ubuntu you make millions of people around the globe happy.

During every 6 month release cycle we run Ubuntu Developer Week. It’s back and we’re going to have it from 29th January to 31st January. During the event we will have online sessions where seasoned Ubuntu developers introduce you to their respective area of expertise or to Ubuntu Development in general.

We will have many great sessions, from hands-on introduction to packaging and Ubuntu development to talks about how to quickly get involved in certain teams and interact with other projects. We will talk about tools and infrastructure, fixing bugs, finding memleaks, working with apps, create Ubuntu images and much much much more. This is the best opportunity to get a feel for how Ubuntu development works, get to know people and ask all the questions you might have.

I talked to a few session hosts, read below what they had to say.

    Martin Pitt

    Martin Pitt

Martin Pitt, who will talk about Automated Testing, says: ā€œWe have been, and are changing the Ubuntu development process to employ automated testing and avoid introducing regressions, and to improve confidence, focus, and development speed. In the first talk I will give an overview about the various kinds of tests that we do, so that you know where to watch out for failures and get debugging information. The second talk focuses on how to write tests, i.e. which technologies are available for e.g. hardware and GUI related behaviour or system-wide integration checks.ā€

    Ā

    Stefano Rivera

    Stefano Rivera

Stefano Rivera, who will talk about Upstreams and Debian in particular, said: ā€œSo, working effectively in Ubuntu means also working with the teams and people upstream who wrote the software we distribute. I’ll talk about why this is important, when it’s necessary, and how to go about it. In particular, our most important upstream is Debian. Debian has a rather unusual (though powerful) bug-tracker. We’ll cover finding, submitting, and modifying bugs on it.ā€

    Chris Wilson

    Chris Wilson

Chris Wilson, project leader of the Hundred Papercuts Team, says: ā€œUnity may be the shiny new thing that everyone loves, but style without substance is only so much fluff, and the substance of Ubuntu is still its GTK-based apps. Once Hundred Paper Cuts focuses it’s attention on that substance, rubbing out the little annoyances that get under our skin every day we’re using Ubuntu. This session will introduce you to the project, how it works, and how to get involved. If you want to contribute to Ubuntu in a way that has the biggest impact on the quality ofĀ experienceĀ for the end user, then don’t miss this.ā€

Bhavani Shankar, said about his talk about patch systems: ā€œMany a time we wonder how to integrate a particular fix a particular part of the code in a program and upload into repositories without having to change code each time by hand and making it clumsy. In this session I’m going to show how to use different patch management systems that are in practice now.ā€

About his talk about the app review process in Ubuntu he says: ā€œIn this session I’m going to explain the present workflow of reviewing apps and give an introduction into the new app dev upload process to automate reviews.ā€

KXStudio, a good audio distribution using KDE

Since a few months my main computer is running a special Ubuntu-based distribution called KXStudio.
It’s actually a set of PPAs on top of ubuntu repositories, meant to provide updated and additional audio-creation software. Also it’s using KDE Plasma as official desktop, with a very good default configuration and an up-to-date 4.9.5 version. So if you’re interested in a good audio distribution, a good KDE system or both, keep on reading…

As I said KXStudio is a set of PPA repositories, divided in categories, so when I first installed it I started from a fresh Xubuntu install, added the most important repositories on top of it (main, plugins, kernel and drivers, kxstudio, and latest) and installed ā€œkxstudio-desktop-xfceā€ meta-package. I used an XFCE desktop first because I’ve always had better experience for ā€œreal-timeā€ audio on this light desktop, but then when I saw that the officially supported desktop was KDE 4.9, I added the ā€œKDE 4.9″ PPA and installed ā€œkxstudio-desktop-kdeā€, and never had to return to XFCE since then ;)
Now since ~2 weeks there’s a new .iso image to test and install it directly, so you may try it instead for a simpler installation.

The most important difference with any regular distribution is that it’s using the JACK audio server for the system by default. For those who are new to audio software on Linux, JACK is the ā€œrealtimeā€ audio server used to run audio software with very low latency and to connect their inputs and outputs to make them work together. So here we have jack launched directly with the desktop, with some bindings for applications using only ALSA or Pulseaudio to JACK. This works very well (and, on a side note, on the KDE desktop it somehow fix the weird issue I had with phonon popping a window now and then saying it can’t find a device..)

It includes new software to make it easy:
-Cadence, a cool GUI to configure JACK, check current system status, and launch the other JACK-tools.
-Catia, a simple patchbay to check and modify audio and midi connections.
-Claudia, same thing as Catia but using LADISH sessions to save and reload settings (for advanced use)
-Carla, a great multi-plugin host for JACK
-a classic log window for troubleshooting
-a render tool to record a JACK project
-a virtual XY-controller+midi keyboard to simulate the equivalent hardware.

    Cadence

    Cadence tools

For a better experience, I recommend to use JACK-native software as much as possible, use the alsa-jack bridge for everything else, and really just if none of these works for the software you want to use, install and launch the pulseaudio jack-bridge (but there really is not much pulseaudio-only apps, at least I don’t use any).

For audio player, Aqualung and Clementine have good JACK support.
For video, VLC and MPlayer are JACK compatible too.
Firefox/flash is using the alsa/jack bridge.

Just give it a try when you have a moment, you’ll see by yourself…

Many thanks to the little KXstudio team for all the work!

Technical note specific to intel GPU users:
I use a laptop with intel GPU (Ivy Bridge), which requires drivers much more recent than those shipped with Ubuntu 12.04 (or even 12.10, so I’m still using a 12.04 base..) so I had to activate some more external PPAs for better up-to-date drivers:
    – https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/intel-graphics-updates
And I installed by hand a more recent 3.6.x kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
With recent kernels, it’s not really necessary to have a low-latency or realtime kernel to use realtime in JACK for most cases. However if you have a very big audio workload and start to get some xruns, you may try with a less recent but low-latency or realtime kernel (all versions I’ve find of these are 3.5.x at best…)

    glnemo2 1.53 (KDE Scientific)

    Thumbnailglnemo2 1.53
    (KDE Scientific)
Glnemo2 is an interactive 3D visualization program which displays particles positions of the different components (gas, stars, disk, dark mater halo, bulge) of an N-body snapshot. It’s a very useful tool for everybody running N-body simulations from isolated galaxies to cosmological simulations. It can show quickly a lot of information about data by revealing shapes, dense areas, formation of structures such as spirals arms, bars, peanuts or clumps of galaxies. Glnemo2 has been designed to meet the requirements of the user, with simplicity in mind, easy to install, easy to use with an interactive and responsive graphical user interface (based on Nokia QT 4.X API) , powerful with a fast 3D engine (OPenGL and GLSL), and generic with the possibility to load different kinds of input files.

You can zoom in/out, rotate, scale, translate, select different particles
and plot them in different blending colors, color particles according to their density,
play with the density threshold, trace orbits, play different time steps, take automatic
screenshots to make movies, select particles using the mouse, fly over your simulation
using camera path. All this features are accessible from a very intuitive graphic user interface.

    Currently, glnemo2 reads:
    NEMO files (http://carma.astro.umd.edu/nemo)
    – Gadget 1 and 2 -little and big endian- files (http://www.mpa-garching.mpg.de/gadget/)
    RAMSES files (http://irfu.cea.fr/Projets/Site_ramses/RAMSES.html)
FTM files (Clayton Heller‘s sph/nbody code)
    – phiGRAPE file (http://wiki.cs.rit.edu/bin/view/GRAPEcluster/phiGRAPE)
    – list of files stored in a file
    – realtime gyrfalcON simulation via a network plugin (see $NEMO/usr/jcl/glnemo2/gyrfalcon/README)

Glnemo2 uses a plugin mechanism to load data, so it’s easy to add a new file reader.
It uses the latest OpenGL technology like, shaders (glsl), vertex buffer object, frame buffer object, and takes in account the power of your graphic card to accelerate the rendering. Millions of particles can be rendered, in real time, with a fast GPU.

Glnemo2 runs fine on Linux, Windows(using minGW compiler), and MaxOSX, thanks to the QT4 API.

Review: Eraser removes files safely and permanently

Secure deletion utility Eraser is free, comes with a beautiful GUI, can do just about anything when it comes to secure file wiping.

Eraser includes its own interface into the Task Scheduler, letting you set automated disk sweep schedules from within the application. You’re not limited to wiping free space, either: Eraser can be set to securely delete the contents of any folder on a set schedule. That sounds like a scary proposition for me (remember, there’s no way to recover files securely deleted), but for braver souls, the option is there. Also, if you’d like to have your recycle bin regularly and securely purged, Eraser can help you there.

Last but not least, Eraser integrates with the file context menu built into Windows, so that you can right-click any file or folder and get an Eraser submenu. From there, you can securely wipe the file or folder either now, or the next time your computer reboots. All in all, if you’re serious about wiping files on a regular basis, Eraser is a very solid tool.

Note: The Download button on the Product Information page will download the software to your system.

Andrea Grandi: Spotify 0.8.8 for Linux crashes if it cannot connect to Internet: how to fix it

If you upgrade Spotify for Linux to 0.8.8.x version and you have some network connection problems (for example you’re behind a company firewall and need to set a proxy…) the application will crash/hang without letting you doing anything (neither setting Proxy informations)

    Screenshot from 2013-01-06 18:56:15

This is caused by a deadlock in the GUI and you can view the complete debugging informations hereĀ http://pastebin.com/zcKgXEqz
To fix this, you just need to open this file ~/.config/spotify/prefs and add these two lines:

    network.proxy.addr="123.123.123.123:1234@https"
    network.proxy.mode=2
