Hidden Tax Time Bombs That Sabotage Retirement

By John E. Girouard, Contributor

If you think your taxes are too high, you might be right, but don’t be so quick to blame Washington, or the percenters—be they the 1, the 47, or the 99. You could be sabotaging your financial goals by making a couple of common tax-related decisions that seemed right at the time, but could come back to haunt you later. Examples facing a growing number of people these days are the second home/rental income property and the home-office tax traps. Starting in the late 1980s, many families bought or built second homes in vacation spots, covering the overhead by renting them out during the high seasons. As owners of income property, they deducted the expenses of maintenance, mortgage interest and depreciation of the structure. For years they enjoyed their off-season vacations, paid the mortgage out of rental income, and got a tax break, all while building equity in an appreciating asset. Now that more people are reaching retirement age with accounts upended by the Great Recession, an expedient solution is to sell the vacation home and sock away the cash. But many people are discovering that they unwittingly planted inside their financial plan a tax time bomb. If you’ve owned a rented-out vacation home and claimed the deductions you were entitled to for two or three decades, you could be in for a ugly shock. Older couples who thought they were building a secure nest egg are discovering that a chunk of the equity they thought they had will be eaten up IRS depreciation recapture rules that impose a tax on the accumulated depreciation deductions they took for all those years. With the decline in home prices, it’s possible to sell a rental vacation property at a loss but still owe the tax collector a bundle. Plus, you’ll likely be paying that bill with income dollars that have already been taxed—a case of taxation duplication. The home-office deduction is another nasty surprise awaiting the millions who joined the ranks of telecommuters and entrepreneurs who took deductions for business use of their residences. If you claimed 20% of your home for your office, you could deduct 20% of the cost of maintaining the house and the depreciation. But when the house is sold, the IRS will have its hand out for its share under the Unrecaptured Section 1250 Gain rule, which imposes a special 25% tax. If you were paying attention, or were lucky, and stopped claiming a home office several years before selling the house, IRS rules may let you off the hook. But not everyone has the luxury of waiting. Special Offer: If you’ll be paying for college anytime in the next decade, don’t miss this free report. There are many moves you can make today to lower college costs and increase financial aid options. Find out how in 12 Insider Tricks to Pay For College. Read it now FREE. In addition to tax time bombs, there are other hidden costs associated with taxes that most people are oblivious

Rio Tinto and Kazakhmys: The End of the Mining Boom

By Prabhat Sakya, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

LONDON — Of my recent contrarian picks, it is worth noting that the only companies that lost substantial money were a couple of commodities companies: Kazakhmys  and Vedanta. I have worked out that mining companies are different from other companies.

Because of the highly cyclical, supply and demand led nature of commodity markets, share prices can be extremely volatile. Kazakhmys’ price is a quarter of what it was in 2011. Rio Tinto‘s share price is half of what it was a few years ago.

China’s construction boom is over
The thing is, in the past decade commodities have experienced their greatest ever boom, as emerging markets — notably China — have consumed ever larger quantities of minerals and metals as they have invested in buildings and infrastructure. In particular, prices of iron ore and copper have rocketed outwards.

But it is widely acknowledged that China‘s construction and infrastructure boom is now over. Instead, its focus is on a technology, consumer and services boom. Thus its demand for metals and minerals has tumbled. Will countries such as India and frontier markets take up the slack? There is an argument to say that they will, but that case is still unproven.

So commodity prices have been falling, and stocks of copper and iron ore have been building. For these reasons, the share prices of Rio Tinto and particularly Kazakhmys have crashed.

The end of the commodities supercycle
How far will share prices fall? I came out of my position in Kazakhmys some time ago. Could there be a contrarian buying opportunity to buy back in? Perhaps. But I now think something bigger is at play here.

Commodities supercycles typically last about 16 years. The current supercycle got under way in the late 1990s, and so is now drawing to a stop.

If I am right and the mining boom really is over, cyclical shares like this really can crash: just think what happened to housing shares after the end of the housing boom. I would avoid mining shares completely.

Foolish final thought
Although there may be falling global demand for metals and minerals, the world is still consuming ever increasing quantities of oil and gas, as the world’s population, and thus energy consumption, rises. Small-cap oil and gas shares, although more risky, have the potential to make you a lot of money. So we at the Motley Fool have thought out a guide to finding good oil and gas shares. Please read our FREE report“How to Unearth Great Gas and Oil Shares”.

Kohl’s Department Stores and Wisconsin State Fair Announce Renewal of Kohl’s Family Value Day Partnership

Kohl’s Family Value Day to Provide Discounted Fair Admission on August 5 and a Fair Experience at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin

WEST ALLIS, Wis.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– The Wisconsin State Fair and the Wisconsin State Fair Park Foundation today announced they will continue their partnership with Kohl’s Department Stores (NYS: KSS) through the Kohl’s Cares program. The renewed partnership will result in the third annual Kohl’s Family Value Day on Monday, August 5 for Fairgoers during the 2013 Wisconsin State Fair. ALL Fairgoers will be eligible for discounted Fair admission from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Adults will receive admission for $5 (a 50 percent savings), and youth 11 and under will receive FREE admission (up to a $6 savings).

Sheriff Joe Withstands Death Threats

By Suzanne Eovaldi

Joe Arpaio 5 SC Sheriff Joe withstands death threats

Just how much more can one man take?  America’s real sheriff (the one doing what his constituents have asked him to do), Sheriff Joe Arpaio, has received a threat against his life in the form of a violent online rant sent from Mexico even as he lies hospitalized with a broken left shoulder. The 80-year old Republican peace officer also faces a fall recall after he was elected to an historic sixth term in November! And Arizona is bracing for more crime resulting from the release of 300 to 500 illegal aliens into the state’s southern border area as Eric Holder and his Department of Justice ignore their sworn duty to protect American citizens threatened daily by hordes of invaders. Of course, many believe the number of released illegals will be closer to 2000, with their being back on the street having been conveniently blamed on the sequester.

An individual identified online as an American citizen and Arizona resident made the following violent threat according to Sheriff Joe’s appeal for help:  “He (Sheriff Joe) should see the color of his skin and where he comes from. . .stupid mother******. . .let’s KILL HIM.  I will kill him for FREE.  I am going to AZ to kill that a..hole!”  Now another thug has sent a message attacking the octogenarian lawman who has spent over 50 years serving his fellowman.   “Hopefully, infection will set in,” says the thug.  Just how low will this man’s opponents go in their effort to bring him down? If recall leader William James Fisher is successful in obtaining over 335,000 valid voter signatures by May 30, the Maricopa County Sheriff and his Office will have to face another political battle.

Keep in mind here that Sheriff Joe is the ONLY American law enforcement officer who answered the call of constituents to investigate the legitimacy of Barack Obama’s citizenship and the apparent forgery of the birth certificate released by the White House as “official” in 2011.  More death threats came in after the intensive investigation into birth certificate forgeries by the Cold Case Posse.  “I’m listening to my constituents; they asked me to look at it,” Arpaio says.  At least 150 lawsuits nationwide and 24 legal appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court by ordinary citizens and Americans worried about our country’s national security have been rebuffed by our judiciary, Congress, politicians, and other law enforcement entities nationwide.  Only Sheriff Joe and his Cold Case Posse investigators led by senior analyst Mike Zullo have had the fortitude to press forward against enormous odds in this crisis of Presidential Legitimacy!

The indomitable patriot sent an instant message from his hospital bed saying he is relieved the injury was to his left shoulder, not his right, so he can still operate his “Smith & Wesson and Smith Corona,” referring to his gun and his typewriter!

“I need your help now more than ever,” reads Sheriff Joe’s press release to CiR.  And we need to answer his call yet again.  You can go to www.info@reelectjoearpaio.com or …read more

Polypore Earnings Trickle To A Halt

By Zacks.com

Polypore International, Inc. (PPO) reported its third consecutive earnings miss on February 20, driven by a 6% decline in sales. This prompted analysts to revise their estimates for both 2013 and 2014 significantly lower, sending the stock to a ZacksRank #5 (Strong Sell).
Despite the negative earnings momentum, shares still trade at a premium on a forward price-to-earnings and price-to-book basis. This doesn’t bode well for shares over the next several weeks.
Company Description
Polypore International is a high technology filtration company that develops, manufactures and markets specialized polymer-based microporous membranes used in separation and filtration processes. Its products are used in two primary segments: energy storage (75% of total sales) and separations media (25%).
The company is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina and has a market cap of $1.8 billion.

Fourth Quarter Results
Polypore reported fourth quarter results on February 20. Adjusted earnings per share came in at 33 cents, falling well short of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 46 cents. It was the company’s third consecutive earnings miss.
Sales declined 6% to $180.2 million, falling well short of the consensus of $191.0 million. The ‘Electronics and Electric Drive Vehicles (EDVs)’ division within the energy storage segment was particularly soft due to weak end-market demand.
Estimates Falling
Following the Q4 earnings miss, analysts revised their estimates significantly lower for both 2013 and 2014. This sent the stock to a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell). The 2013 Zacks Consensus Estimate is now $1.69, down from $2.08 just 30 days ago. And the 2014 consensus is now $2.21, down from $2.73. Will Changes in the Mortgage Market Impact REITs?

By David Hanson and Matt Koppenheffer, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Regulators overseeing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac announced yesterday that the two would be consolidating some repetitive “back-office” functions. Could this be the beginning of a total consolidation of the two? And could it lead to a phasing out of these two government sponsored giants of the secondary mortgage market, shifting the risk of mortgage-backed security investments to the private sector?

In this video, Motley Fool financial analysts David Hanson and Matt Koppenheffer discuss what this scenario would look like, and how REIT investors could be affected.

One of the most interesting REITs out there today is Annaly Capital. There’s no question Annaly Capital‘s double-digit dividend is eye-catching. But can investors count on that payout sticking around? With the Federal Reserve keeping interest rates at historically low levels, Annaly has had to scramble to defend its bottom line. In The Motley Fool‘s premium research report on Annaly, senior analysts Ilan Moscovitz and Matt Koppenheffer uncover the key challenges the company faces and divulge three reasons investors may consider buying it.
