Nokia Launches New Phone in India: Nokia 105

By Kevin Chen, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Nokia  has launched the Nokia 105 in India, marking the end of only black-and-white screens for simple voice-and-text phones in India.

The Nokia 105 features a full-color display, a built-in flashlight, and a speaking clock. Basic features are also included like FM radio, pre-loaded games, and multiple alarm clocks. As Nokia’s most affordable phone, the Nokia 105 is priced at around $20 (or 1,249 Indian rupees).

Given the phone’s price range and standby time of up to 35 days, the Finnish company hopes to make inroads in developing countries. In addition, Nokia says the phone will make a great back-up for higher-end customers.

To attract customers, the Nokia 105 takes design concepts from Nokia’s Lumia smartphone line. The phone comes with rounded edges and is available in black and the “iconic” Nokia cyan. The changes should provide consistent branding across the company’s phones.

In the company’s blog, Nokia India‘s Viral Oza said the Nokia 105 is “the ideal handset for first time buyers to enjoy the benefits and experiences of mobility.”

India Times reports that the phone is the successor to the Nokia 1280, which has sold more than 100 million units to date.

Nokia Launches App for Jazzing Up Camera-Phone Self-Portraits

By Kevin Chen, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Nokia  has launched “Glam Me,” a camera app for taking and editing self-portraits on all Nokia Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone 8 in an effort to capitalize on what it calls the “selfie” phenomenon, the love of taking self-photos with phones.

The app allows a “slick range of beauty enhancing effects, such as teeth whitening and skin smoothing.” Users can also alter their self-snapshots with visual effects that include making them look like a sketch, an oil painting, or a magazine cover.

Nokia says selfies are “a true phenomenon” among young people in Asian countries — especially China. Developed in Beijing, Nokia hopes that Glam Me will appeal to the “young, social, and design-conscious” everywhere. Glam Me also lets users compare photos before and after editing.

In developing Glam Me, Nokia focused on providing  accurate face detection, camera effects, and beauty enhancement features. On Nokia Lumia phones, Glam Me can be launched as its own stand-alone application or selected through the viewfinder.

Once finished taking a picture, Glam Me lets users send photos via email, SMS or through social networks like Facebook or Weibo in China.

This Should Have Nokia Fans Jumping for Joy — Right?

By Tim Brugger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

First, the good news: Nokia isn’t just the leading manufacturer of Microsoft‘s Windows 8 global smartphone market. According to a recent report from AdDuplex, it’s absolutely destroying the competition. Combined with the Q4 announcement of 4.4 million Lumias sold, that should make even Nokia bears stand up and take notice. But with so many ongoing questions regarding the impact of Windows 8 in the smartphone OS market, does Nokia’s resurgence even matter?

The envelope, please
As of April 4, the date of AdDuplex’s report, Nokia was the manufacturer of choice for 80% of all Windows 8 phones in use worldwide. HTC was a distant second, holding 14% of the Windows phone market, and Samsung, with its limited Windows smartphone alternatives, accounted for 5%. A smattering of others, including Huawei, ZTE, and Acer, shared what little was left.

Nokia’s dominant position isn’t entirely a surprise. As the world’s No. 2 phone manufacturer, and the first to go all in with Windows 8, Nokia was always going to be ahead of the pack. But 80% is a staggering market share.

Fools should also note the growth of Nokia’s Lumia 920, its latest, greatest, and most expensive smartphone. The Lumia 920 has taken over the top spot of all Windows 8 phones worldwide, jumping from fourth place just a month ago.

With Nokia’s earnings announcement slated for April 18, let’s hope CEO Stephen Elop shares Lumia sales numbers specific to the China Mobile deal Nokia inked late last year. With 700 million subscribers, China Mobile is the world’s largest wireless carrier; a good start there would certainly help to explain the jump in Lumia’s position and position Nokia for further growth.

Internationally, Nokia dominates Windows 8 smartphone sales the way Samsung and Apple do in the U.S., with more than 90% market penetration in its top 10 markets. South America in particular loves its Nokia Windows 8 smartphones; four of Nokia’s top 10 countries by market share hail from the continent, with Argentina clocking in at 99% market share for all Windows 8 phones in use. Impressive.

Now for some perspective
Windows Phone, while growing market share in the U.S., remains a distant fourth behind Google‘s Android, Apple iOS, and BlackBerry , according to recent data from comScore. Android OS and iOS together own slightly more than 90% of the market domestically, and the story’s about the same internationally. Nokia and Microsoft can only point to Windows Phone 8’s movement in the right direction. Along with iOS, Windows 8 was the only operating system to increase its share of the domestic mobile OS pie the past quarter, up to 3.2% from 3% in November.

The battle lines have been drawn, and for mobile OS developers, that means the immediate objective is a fight for third place. Unseating Android and iOS will have to wait. Right now, BlackBerry’s holding onto that position. With its new BB10 slowly but surely rolling out across various markets, it should be able …read more

Nokia Lumia 521 to Launch on T-Mobile in May

By Evan Niu, CFA, The Motley Fool

The carrier had said in February that it would offer the device without detailing a specific time frame. The Lumia 521 is positioned as an affordable device. However, T-Mobile did not provide specific pricing details or a specific date in May for launch.

The Lumia 521 willl feature a 4-inch display and 5-megapixel camera, and offer several of Nokia’s first-party services such as Nokia Music. The device will be powered by Microsoft Windows Phone 8. T-Mobile plans to distribute the Lumia 521 through its retail stores, as well as Wal-Mart and Microsoft retail locations.

T-Mobile currently offers only two Windows Phone devices, the HTC 8X and Lumia 810.

Microsoft's Gaining Smartphone Market Share

By Daniel Sparks, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

When Nokia announced its Lumia running Microsoft Windows Phone on Nov. 28, 2011, no one really knew whether the phone would be a success or not. Now, slowly but surely, the phone is gaining meaningful market share in the fast-growing smartphone market. Two recent reports, in particular, uncover surprisingly bullish data for Nokia’s Lumia.

An Apple and Google world
During the first 12 months of the phone’s existence, Lumia sales were pretty insubstantial. This changed, however, when Nokia announced 4.4 million units sold in the fourth quarter. That figure was an increase of 51% from the prior quarter.

When we consider the sales volume of its competitors, however, these numbers seem less impressive. Apple , for instance, sold 47.8 million iPhones during the corresponding quarter. Samsung sold a whopping 63 million smartphones. Most of the latter devices, of course, use Google‘s Android for their mobile OS. When it comes to monster sales, Apple and Samsung are on top.

Together, Google and Apple make up about 90% of top smartphone platforms in the U.S., according to a study published last week by comScore that measures installed user base of smartphone platforms. So far, the smartphone market is still an Apple and Google world. So Microsoft‘s place in the highly competitive market may seem small, but the company is vying for third place.

Two surprising reports
comScore revealed that Microsoft earned the No. 4 spot among smartphone operating systems in the U.S., with a 3.2% share in February compared to 3% in November. BlackBerry‘s market share, on the other hand, fell substantially — from 7.3% in November to 5.4% in February. The change in sales is likely even more drastic. As MacRumors notes, “comScore’s data tracks installed user base rather than new handset sales, which means it is more reflective of real-world usage but slower to respond to shifting market trends than some other studies.”

A report from Net Applications, published last Wednesday, revealed that mobile Internet traffic generated by Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is already more than double the traffic from BlackBerry’s browser. Microsoft claimed 1.99% market share while BlackBerry’s share dipped to just 0.91%. Perhaps much of BlackBerry’s installed base of smartphones is sitting around unused.

Microsoft should claim third place
Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android still dominate the smartphone market, but Microsoft is on pace to officially claim the third spot. Recent reports of Lumia success in China — one of the world’s fastest-growing smartphone markets — indicate that Microsoft has an even better chance of attaining meaningful market share.

Is it time to bet big on Microsoft in the smartphone market? Probably not. But Microsoft is poised to potentially pull off a surprise. For now, investors should view Microsoft’s small success in smartphones as a possible upside bonus, though its continued ascent far from certain, given Apple and Google’s dominance.

It’s been a frustrating path for Microsoft investors, who’ve watched the company fail to capitalize on the incredible …read more

Better Smartphone Comeback Play: BlackBerry or Nokia?

By Steve Heller, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Let’s face it: The smartphone revolution hasn’t been kind to every company that’s been trying to make it out there. In recent years, the headlines have been dominated by Apple and Google for having the smartphone market locked down. Naturally, this incredible success came at the expense of other companies, having seen their fortunes dissipate in recent times. Back in the day, it was Nokia that ruled the smartphone world with its Symbian mobile operating system, but once the iPhone caught the consumer’s eye, everything started to change.

Source: Gartner.

Enterprise-entrenched BlackBerry largely held its own in terms of market share until 2010, when enterprises began reducing their dependence on the company’s enterprise-oriented solutions. At the time, the writing was on the wall that BlackBerry could be in trouble, which helped drive Apple’s enterprise share to more than 50% today.

Although BlackBerry and Nokia have experienced their share of hardships in recent years, both come with an arsenal of new offerings hoping to change their statuses in the smartphone world. Which company has the best chances of success in 2013?

Nokia Lumia 620. Source: Nokia.

Since developed markets are more established for smartphones, Nokia will be primarily placing its focus on emerging-market growth opportunities. Considering that the world has only reached roughly 25% worldwide smartphone saturation, there’s a tremendous amount of growth for companies that cater to less saturated markets. Not to mention that Nokia has aggressively priced its offerings to fare well when consumers decide which device has the best value for the price. Central to this strategy are the $180 unsubsidized Nokia Lumia 520 and the $249 Lumia 620, which together hold the potential to ruffle Android’s feathers in the sub-$250 unsubsidized smartphone market. Until now, the sub-$250 Android smartphone market hasn’t been met with any formidable competition. The hope is that Nokia’s aggressive approach coupled with Microsoft‘s freshly minted Windows Phone 8 ecosystem will be enough to steal some thunder away from Android’s stronghold.

BlackBerry Z10. Source: BlackBerry.

Working from the high end down, BlackBerry has been in the process of (slowly) releasing its first flagship BlackBerry 10 phone, the BlackBerry Z10, into the wild. BB10 is built on an entirely new source code called QNX, which offers the promise of a modern-day mobile OS, coupled with the potential to act as a modern-day cross-compatible platform. BlackBerry promises QNX will one day connect with your car, home, and the health-care system from your device. The Z10 is also a sharp divergence from the traditional designs of the keyboard-entrenched device maker.

Ultimately, BlackBerry is planning on releasing six devices based on BB10 in 2013, split evenly between keyboard and touch models, covering a range of price points from the low end to the high. But considering the Z10 fetches an unsubsidized $599, BlackBerry is a few steps behind Nokia in terms …read more

Nokia Goes Bigger With Big Red

By Evan Niu, CFA, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Late last year, Microsoft and Nokia hooked up with Verizon Wireless. The triad was notable because Big Red had mostly abandoned Windows Phone for a year and a half, focusing its efforts on Google Android.

Over the following months, it was clear that Verizon was giving Windows Phone another shot as it continued to expand its product portfolio on that platform, adding HTC’s Windows Phone 8X and Samsung’s ATIV Odyssey shortly thereafter. That brings Verizon’s Windows Phone lineup up to 4 devices. For some inexplicably strange reason, the priciest by a long shot is the HTC Trophy, a device that was launched in May 2011 and runs the un-upgradeable Windows Phone 7, while the rest run Windows Phone 8.

The Nokia device that heralded the renewed vows was its Lumia 822, a mid-range model initially priced at $100 on contract (currently free on contract). The Finnish vendor’s flagship Lumia 920 was still exclusive to AT&T at the time, but now The Verge is reporting that the Lumia 928 is debuting on Big Red‘s network next month.

Lumia 920. Source: Nokia.

That device is more than just a variant of the Lumia 920, and is reportedly getting a fancy aluminum casing of higher quality than the polycarbonate used in the 920. On top of that, the 928 should get a xenon and LED flash combination for the shutter bugs out there. The overall weight and thickness should both be reduced as a result of these changes, even though the overall design is still very similar. The 928 will have a 4.5-inch OLED display, while the regular 920 doesn’t use OLED.

Nokia’s Lumia sales have been on the rise, lifting Windows Phone‘s market share in tow. The company moved 4.4 million units last quarter, which was the majority of the estimated 6 million Windows Phones sold. Getting distribution of a high-end device on the largest domestic carrier will add to that momentum.

Nokia’s been struggling in a world of Apple and Android smartphone dominance. However, the company has banked its future on its next generation of Windows smartphones. Motley Fool analyst Charly Travers has created a new premium report that digs into both the opportunities and risks facing Nokia to help investors decide if the company is a buy or sell. Merck Fights the Dow's Fall

By Dan Carroll, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

The run had to come to an end eventually. After days upon days of soaring to new heights, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has finally come back down to earth with modest losses today. As of 2:20 p.m. EDT, the index has fallen 26 points, or 0.18%, after investors saw nothing but green for more than a week. Most stocks are falling today, but good news has shares of Merck surging. Let’s get caught up on the news you need to know.

Big pharma’s divergent fortunes
Merck is leading the Dow by a wide margin, gaining 3.1% so far. An independent safety panel today gave the company the go-ahead to continue its clinical trial evaluating the effectiveness and safety profile of cholesterol therapy Vytorin. The panel said it had no safety concerns with the drug, which produces $1.75 billion in annual sales. The trial will determine Vytorin’s ability to combat heart attacks and other cardiac ailments in comparison to generically available Merck drug Zocor. With Vytorin’s sales on the downswing since 2008, Merck investors are hoping for a lift.

Not all is sunny among big pharma players, however. Merck’s rival Pfizer ranks among the worst in the Dow today with losses of 1.2%, fueled by the FDA‘s strengthening of a warning label on the company’s antibiotic Zithromax. While the drug also has generic competition, it’s nonetheless a blow to Pfizer as the FDA cautions that Zithromax patients face potentially fatal heart-related risks.

Today’s leading laggard, however, is Caterpillar . This industrial stock hasn’t rewarded shareholders recently, falling more than 6% over the last month. Worries over China‘s slowdown and pullback on infrastructure spending have caught up with Caterpillar, as investors fear the world’s second-largest economy could be in for slower growth than it saw in recent years. With Caterpillar and many of its rivals reliant on higher-growth emerging economies like China to compensate for the sluggish trends in advanced economies, a slowdown could be dire.

On the other side of the Dow, telecom stocks are keeping the index from having too bad of a day. Verizon and AT&T are up 0.9% and 0.3%, respectively. Verizon caught a boost today as rumors swirl that the carrier will sell an all-metal version of the Nokia Lumia 920 next month as the company’s premier Windows Phone 8 device. Not to be outdone, AT&T is making investors happy as it begins taking orders for the new BlackBerry Z10 smartphone today. The company expects to ship the devices starting March 22 as the first offering of BlackBerry’s new BlackBerry 10 operating system.

Can Merck beat the patent cliff?
This titan of the pharmaceutical industry stumbled into 2013 and continues to battle patent expirations and pipeline problems. Is Merck still a solid dividend play, or should investors be looking elsewhere? 1 Great Dividend You Can Buy Right Now? Apple.

By Sean Williams, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Dividend stocks are everywhere, but many just downright stink. In some cases, the business model is in serious jeopardy, or the dividend itself isn’t sustainable. In others, the dividend is so low, it’s not even worth the paper your dividend check is printed on. A solid dividend strikes the right balance of growth, value, and sustainability.

Today, and one day each week for the rest of the year, we’re going to look at one dividend-paying company that you can put in your portfolio for the long term without too much concern. This isn’t to say that these stocks don’t share the same macro risks that other companies have, but they are a step above your common grade of dividend stock. Check out last week’s selection.

This week, I’m going to highlight technological powerhouse and former largest company in the world, Apple .

One bad Apple spoiled the bunch?
We could probably debate from here until next week what’s wrong with Apple over the past couple of months. For time’s sake, I’m not going to do that. What I will do is point out the fact that Apple’s iPhone sales are slowing on a year-over-year basis as Samsung and other manufacturers running on Google‘s  Android-based operating system give Apple’s operating system a run for its money. In particular, the Samsung Galaxy S III, which offers a bigger screen and file-sharing capabilities with a touch, are slowing sales of the still highly coveted mobile device.

Competition in tablets is another area where Apple isn’t losing the war, but it’s needed to share its slice of the pie. Amazon.com has a fully Internet-capable tablet in the Kindle Fire that also provides the convenience of downloading books from its massive content library. Most notable about the Kindle Fire is that its new 8.9-inch model is priced at just $299. Compare that to the newest generation iPad, which almost always goes for $429 or more for the base model.

All this together, along with the simple fact that Apple didn’t stomp its usually conservative guidance into oblivion in the holiday quarter, was enough to throttle the share price. Short-term concerns and emotional trading aside, Apple is about as cheap as it’s been in a decade on an earnings basis and looks like one of the stronger buys in the market.
