Read This: Is it time for American carmakers to give up on dual-clutch transmissions? [w/poll]

By Damon Lowney

Dual-clutch transmissions in plant

Filed under:

Last week, in the midst of Detroit’s first days seeking relief in Chapter 9 of the bankruptcy code, Automotive News contributor Larry P. Vellequette penned an editorial suggesting that American car companies raise the white flag on dual clutch transmissions and give up on trying to persuade Americans to buy cars fitted with them. Why? Because, Vellequette says, like CVT transmissions, they “just don’t sound right or feel right to American drivers.” (Note: In the article, it’s not clear if Vellequette is arguing against wet-clutch and dry-clutch DCTs or just dry-clutch DCTs, which is what Ford and Chrysler use.) The article goes on to state that Ford and Chrysler have experimented with DCTs and that both consumers and the automotive press haven’t exactly given them glowing reviews, despite their quicker shifts and increased fuel efficiency potential compared to torque-converter automatic transmissions.

Autoblog staffers who weighed in on the relevance of DCTs in American cars generally disagreed with the blanket nature of Vellequette’s statement that they don’t sound or feel right, but admit that their lack of refinement compared to traditional automatics can be an issue for consumers. That’s particularly true in workaday cars like the Ford Focus and Dodge Dart, both of which have come in for criticism in reviews and owner surveys. From where we sit, the higher-performance orientation of such transmissions doesn’t always meld as well with the marching orders of everyday commuters (particularly if drivers haven’t been educated as to the transmission’s benefits and tradeoffs), and in models not fitted with paddle shifters, it’s particularly hard for drivers to use a DCT to its best advantage.

Finally, we also note that DCT tuning is very much an evolving science. For instance, Autoblog editors who objected to dual-clutch tuning in the Dart have more recently found the technology agreeable in the Fiat 500L. Practice makes perfect – or at least more acceptable.

What do you think? Vote in our poll below, then have your say in Comments.

Report: 2014 Jeep Cherokee will keep Liberty designation in China… sort of

2014 Jeep Cherokee

Filed under:

Chinese buyers will get their first live look at the 2014 Jeep Cherokee during the Shanghai Motor Show, but CarNewsChina is reporting that it will go by a different name – Ziyou Guan, which translates to “Liberty Light.” The article states that our Jeep Liberty was never sold in China, but the iconic XJ Cherokee was sold and produced there as the Qinuoji (a phonetic translation of Cherokee).

The new Jeep Liberty Light will be built alongside the Fiat Viaggio (China‘s Fiat-badged version of the Dodge Dart) at the Guangzhou-Fiat plant, and the two models will share the same powertrains: a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder base engine paired to a five-speed manual or a dual-clutch transmission and a 2.4-liter four-cylinder (the base engine for the US-spec 2014 Cherokee) as an optional engine. It doesn’t sound like the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 will be offered in China.

We’ll be on hand when the new Jeep debuts in Shanghai, so stay tuned to Autoblog this Friday night and Saturday for our live coverage of the show.

Dodge and SRT Motorsports announced that the Dodge Dart will be returning for its sophomore season of the Global Rallycross Championship with a two-car team fielded by Pastrana Racing. Travis Pastrana drove his GRC Dart to victory lane in the fourth race of the car’s inaugural season, and his race team is looking for even more success with the addition of off-road racer Bryce Menzies behind the wheel of the second car.

The 2013 GRC season kicks off on April 21 in Brazil with plenty of dirt-spewing, ramp-jumping action. Scroll down for a video from the cars’ main sponsor, Red Bull, and a press release from Chrysler.

California Dreaming: All-Electric 2013 Fiat 500E Prices Set, Starts at $32,500

By Kirk Seaman

15 Advanced Drinking Games - Image 1

Fiat has announced what it costs to combine Italian style with all-electric technology: the 500E will start at $32,500 when it goes on sale (available only in California) later this summer. For Golden State residents who are eligible for certain federal credits, state incentives, and Fiat rebates, the price could drop as low as $20,500, or about $200 cheaper than the starting price of a similarly equipped, gas-powered Fiat 500 Lounge. The 500E also will be available for lease, with $999 down and $199 per month for 36 months, which is the same as for a gas-powered Fiat Pop. What makes the 500E most interesting, however, is the special program and features Fiat is introducing to address some of the concerns related to electric-vehicle ownership.

Perhaps the main concern among potential EV owners is driving range. The EPA estimates the 500E should be good for about 87 miles. Not bad for around-town driving, but road trips definitely are not happening. Cargo capacity is another issue; how are you going to move your kid’s stuff to college or do other serious hauling?

Introducing the Fiat 500E Pass Program

That’s where the Fiat 500E Pass program comes in, providing buyers and lessees with up to 12 days of alternative transportation each year for the first three years after the purchase or lease of a 500E. Partnering with Enterprise Holdings (which owns Enterprise, Alamo, and National car-rental companies), the program will give 500E customers access to other vehicles such as gas-powered 500s, the upcoming 500L, the Dodge Dart, or the Chrysler 200. Customers also will have the choice of upgrading to a larger vehicle such as a minivan or a pickup. The 500E Pass program is a standard feature on the car and the program includes unlimited mileage on eligible vehicles used as alternative transportation.

Dedicated Customer Care and Charging Stations

Each Fiat dealership, or “studio” in Fiat parlance, in California will have a staff trained to answer any questions consumers may have about the 500E. Each studio will have a hotline that will connect consumers to experts who can answer questions about the car, including how to file for federal, state, and local tax credits. The hotline experts also will have access to a list of companies in California that offer incentives to employees who purchase an EV.

After the regular Fiat dealerships have closed for the day, there will be a dedicated customer-care number that consumers and owners can call to answer any questions they might have. Each dealership will offer four charging stations for the use of 500E customers; to help them find other charging points, the standard nav system includes the locations of the nearest charging stations along their routes.

There’s an EV App, Too

In addition to the in-car nav system, 500E customers also will receive a 500E smartphone app (for use with both iPhone and

Chrysler recalling over 200k vehicles across its brands

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

With more than 200,000 units across six separate recalls and almost all of its brands, it appears that Chrysler has officially jumped headfirst into the recall pool this month. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued three official recalls for the automaker, and The Detroit News is reporting that the automaker itself has announced three more.

The biggest of the recalls applies to about 120,000 Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger and Chrysler 300 models for 2011 and 2012 due to faulty wiring harnesses for the seat-mounted side airbags, which could lead to these airbags not deploying in the event of a crash. A little more than 60,000 two-wheel-drive versions of the 2007-2008 Dodge Nitro and 2008 Jeep Liberty SUVs are being recalled due to a heat shield that could cause the driveshaft to break, which if that isn’t bad on its own, could then hit underneath where the airbag sensor is mounted, causing the airbags to deploy. Wrapping up NHTSA‘s recall notices, about 20,000 Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass models for 2012 are also being recalled due to a problem with the fuel tank transfer tube that could lead to the vehicle stalling. The LX car recall campaign is going into effect this month, while the other two will start next month – all three notices are posted below.

In addition to the official NHTSA recalls, The Detroit News is also reporting that Chrysler is recalling more than 16,000 Ram trucks and a small number of Dodge Dart sedans. Around 6,500 2013 Ram 1500 trucks will be recalled due to an improper adjustment of the parking brake cable from the factory, while 7,000 Cummins-powered 2013 Ram Heavy Duty trucks are being recalled due to an engine cover that does not have as much heat resistance as it is supposed to. Finally, a total of 46 Dodge Dart sedans are being recalled due to a problem with the brake calipers and/or parking brake.

Report: A few signs that Cadillac's revival is taking hold

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

Only a flatworm would not have predicted the Cadillac ATS would help increase sales for America’s erstwhile luxury brand of record; however, even the best automotive oracles didn’t realize by how much: The ATS fueled a 49-percent increase of the brand’s year-on-year sales in March, the sixth straight month of growth for Cadillac. The momentum helped push General Motors to post a 6.4-increase in sales in March versus 2012, leading its domestic competitors.

Dealership salesmen are among the first to register the shift occurring at Cadillac. A Texas dealer related an incident in which he helped a mother affix a baby seat in a car for a test drive, explaining that as opposed to the older buyers that are still a Cadillac mainstay he’s getting “a pretty diverse group that’s coming through the door now” who are “younger and better educated.” Aided by incentives on the ATS, Cadillac’s sales are up 38 percent so far this year, overtaking Acura as the fourth best selling luxury brand, and GM stock is benefiting with incremental gains because of it. Based on early response, the new 2014 Cadillac CTS should keep things going in the same direction.

The trend at the Wreath and Crest is part of a larger sales trend happening among domestics – with other models like the Dodge Dart and Ford Fusion doing well – and overall US car sales. Head over to Bloomberg for the big picture and role the ATS plays in it.

New York: 2014 Jeep Cherokee dreams of Moab, crawls on stage [w/video]

By Michael Harley

Filed under:

The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee inched its way onto the stage at the New York Auto Show today, proving that at least the “Trail Rated” version of the SUV is more than just a controversial unique odd fresh face in the mid-size segment. After the short, simulated Moab run by the Trailhawk model, the gray four-door was joined on the stage by a burgundy Limited model – the luxurious highway variant.

As a recap, the all-new 2014 Cherokee rides atop a modular Alfa Romeo-derived platform (we know it from the Dodge Dart) and will be offered in both front- and all-wheel drive models with a choice between a 2.4-liter four-cylinder (rated at 184 horsepower) and a new 3.2-liter Pentastar V6 (developing 271 horsepower) engine. A nine-speed automatic is standard and no less than three different all-wheel drive systems are available.

Of the four different models (Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk), we like the rugged looks and capabilities offered by the Trailhawk the best. Overlook the red tow hooks and check out its more aggressive wheel/tire package, flared fenders, reduced breakover angle and lack of brightwork in our gallery of live images from the New York show. Skid plates and off-road capable tires round out the package. Read all the details in the official press release below.

How Much, Good Lookin’? 2014 Kia Forte Priced from $16,700

By Alexander Stoklosa

2014 Kia Forte EX GDI sedan

Kia’s redesigned 2014 Forte sedan is a handsome piece, and it’s larger and even better-equipped than the car it replaces. All of that added goodness, however, will only cost buyers an additional $525 relative to the least-expensive 2013 model. Kia has released pricing for the new Forte—which starts at $16,700—and released EPA fuel-economy ratings for one of the Forte’s two available powertrains. Like last year, the 2014 Forte sedan comes in LX and EX flavors, although the previously available SX trim level is absent for now. A new five-door Forte soon will replace the outgoing hatchback, but a successor to the two-door Forte Koup likely is a few years away.

The entry-level LX comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission and a 148-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. A six-speed automatic is optional, while the uplevel EX trim level gets a standard automatic and a more powerful 173-hp, 2.0-liter four with direct injection. (Yeah, we’re just as bummed as you are that the zestier engine cannot be paired with a stick.) The 2.0-liter is rated for 24 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway, which is pretty much par for the compact class. Ratings for the 1.8-liter are forthcoming. In terms of features, the LX comes standard with power windows, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, Bluetooth, and heated power-folding mirrors. Besides adding the burlier engine, stepping up to the EX brings Kia’s second-generation UVO infotainment system, 16-inch aluminum wheels, backup camera, cruise control, Flex Steering with three driver-selectable steering modes, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and keyless entry. Full pricing and option breakdown below:

Forte LX: $16,700 + $1500 for six-speed automatic transmission; available Popular package ($900) adds 16-inch aluminum wheels, keyless entry, cruise control, two additional audio system speakers, sliding center armrest, rear center armrest, soft-touch front door panels, and mirrors with integrated turn indicators.

Forte EX: $20,200; available Premium package ($2600) adds sunroof, leather seats, 10-way power driver’s seat with memory, heated front and rear seats with driver’s seat ventilation, heated steering wheel, push-button start, illuminated exterior door handles, and puddle lamps; requires $300 17-inch aluminum wheels. The Technology package ($2300) brings navigation, a 4.2-inch color gauge-cluster display, HID headlights, LED taillights, and dual-zone automatic climate control; buyers must spec the Premium package to get the Tech bundle.

Compared to compact-segment stalwarts like the Ford Focus, Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic, Volkswagen Jetta, and the newcomer Dodge Dart, the Forte’s pricing is fairly competitive, with a base price that matches up or undercuts some of those cars’ mid-level trims. While that may not seem terribly flattering for the Kia, its bevy of standard features puts it, in base trim, closer to the other offerings’ mid-level trims. At the top end, a loaded Forte EX rings in at $25,400. A similarly spec’d Dart Limited (with the base, 2.0-liter four, not the optional 1.4-liter turbo four and dual-clutch automatic) or …read more

2013 LeMons Season Opener: All that Matters Is Someone’s Racing a Cessna (Yes, a Plane!)

By Murilee Martin

Here we are at the fourth annual Southern Discomfort 24 Hours of LeMons, held at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina, and our neurons have been fried like hairs facing a blowtorch. Why? Mainly due to the 1957 Cessna 310 converted to road-race configuration, but that’s far from the only completely amazing, only-in-LeMons race vehicle that showed up for today’s inspections.

How does the idea of a Geo Metro with Ford Duratec V-6 in the back sound to you? It seemed like a fine idea to Team Georassic Park!

Many LeMons teams address your correspondent, who also doubles as Chief Justice of the LeMons Supreme Court, thusly: “Judge Phil,” they ask, “How can I get my car through the BS Inspection and avoid penalty laps for my cheaty car?” This is the question that led to a BMW 3-series team turning their E30 into a rolling monument to Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha—and the very same question culminated in this homage to Thomas Pynchon’s great 1966 novel.

They’ve got a muted post horn on the car’s roof, a team member dressed up as a credible Oedipa Maas, and a W.A.S.T.E. mailbox. Well done!

The NSF Racing ’87 Plymouth Reliant wagon that was such a hit at the 2012 season-ender has returned, this time with all-Rosie-the-Riveter driver roster.

After a bunch of teams with John Galt/Ayn Rand themes scrawled in Sharpie on their snoreworthy race cars, John Galt Racing finally went ahead and installed a glammed-up Ayn Rand graphic on their car’s hood.

We had hippies, and another team called the “On Site Hippie-Abatement Team.”

We see precious few 1960s Detroit cars in our series, so it’s always a treat when something like this ’64 Ford Fairlane shows up to race. 289 engine, C4 transmission, sagging rear leaf springs, what more could you ask for?

Well, what we always ask for when we see a half-century-old Detroit car is another half-century-old Detroit car to be its on-track rival. This time, we got our wish: this 1964 Dodge Dart, complete with slant-six engine and pushbutton automatic shifter. …read more

Chrysler Announces 2014 Production of Nine-Speed Automatics in Indiana

By John Lamm

Chrysler Announces 2014 Production of Nine-Speed Automatics in Indiana

The nine-speeds are coming, the nine-speeds are coming! Chrysler has finalized its plans to invest a total of $374 million to produce nine-speed automatics in the U.S., under license from ZF. The lines start moving next spring. The company says that the move will create 1250 new jobs at the Pentastar’s closely situated Kokomo and Tipton transmission plants in Indiana, and will make the complex the largest transmission installation in the world. Chrysler Chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne also used the announcement to note production has begun in Kokomo of the longitudinal eight-speed automatic for the 2013 Dodge Charger and 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The nine-speed transmission will quickly find its way into the Dodge Dart and the 2014 Jeep ChChrysler Announces 2014 Production of Nine-Speed Automatics in Indianaerokee (photos of the latter were released this week), and is scheduled to appear in “many” C- and D-segment vehicles. We’ve previously reported that ZF touts the gearbox as delivering fuel-efficiency gains of up to 16 percent versus a typical six-speed automatic. That’s due to the high overall gear-ratio spread of 9.84, and further amplified by the small ratio differences between each of the nine gears. This latter trait should help performance, too, as the gearbox is expected to keep the engine in the thick of its powerband, while the torque converter will lock at lower engine speeds.

Want one? Be forewarned that early adopters may suffer from ratio envy: A Ford/GM collaboration and Hyundai are each working on 10-speed units.

Alfa Romeo’s Latest Giulietta, the Veloce—Italian for “Fast” [2013 Geneva Auto Show]

By John Lamm

2013 Geneva auto show full coverage

Those Alfisti among us surely are quite familiar with the word “veloce,” which is Italian for “fast.” The brand has added veloce to its Giulietta nameplate dating back to 1956. Having never been shy about dipping into its past, Alfa is doing so again to create a new version of the Dodge Dart‘s Italian cousin—the Giulietta Veloce, debuting at the Geneva auto show. We’d like to be able to inform you that the Veloce got its name because Alfa dropped a bigger engine in it to make it, well, faster, but instead the Italian marque has created, in its words, a model for “clientele looking for contents and styling details brimming with character.”

Apparently such buyers are looking for 17-inch titanium-finished aluminum wheels, black-trimmed headlights, titanium-finished side-mirror caps, the famed Veloce logo and, yikes, chrome door handles. The Veloce’s interior largely is done in dark colors to emphasize the titanium theme, which adorns the, the central tunnel, and the door panels. The seats are upholstered in a red-and-black pattern Alfa is referring to as Competizione, with the same theme extending to the black-leather-wrapped steering wheel featuring red contrast stitching. The exterior can be specified to come with a roof finished in matte gray or gloss black, each only available with select combinations of the car’s exterior finishes—Pastel Black, Ghiaccio White, Alfa Red, Antracite Gray, Metallic Red, and Etna Black. All very nice, perhaps, but true Alfisti know that honest Giulietta Veloces are created in the engineering department, not the design studios.

That’s even more evident upon researching what, exactly, will power the Veloce. Alfa tells us “the new Giulietta Veloce is available—depending on the market—with the various engines in the range.” Our prodding didn’t yield any further clarification. So in theory, that statement could mean that the Veloce will be available with a diesel. And while we consider ourselves disciples at the alter of compression ignition, legendary Alfa engineer Vittorio Jano would be turning in his grave at the very thought. Luckily, most markets offer the Giulietta with the 1750-cc direct-injected turbo four that will power the new 4C. With 235 horsepower and up to 221 lb-ft of torque in Giulietta guise, this mill likely will be the Veloce engine of choice. Besides, the number 1750 also has its place in Alfa Romeo history. Jano, more so than any designer, would approve.

Official: 2014 Jeep Cherokee gets official in a hurry

By Chris Paukert

2014 Jeep Cherokee - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

Automakers work very, very hard to keep their new vehicles under wraps until they can present them in exactly the way they want it – typically choreographed under the bright lights of an auto show, or perhaps with photos or video in an idyllic location. Spy shooters and leaks, in other words, keep executives and public-relations types up at night.

Take today, for instance, when the team over at Jalopnik got a big scoop – the first undisguised shots of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, a model whose name wasn’t even officially confirmed yet. The clandestine images taken inside of a factory were blurry and didn’t exactly show off the crossover’s radical new contours in the same sort of flattering light that Jeep probably would’ve wished for their product reveal. So the Auburn Hills automaker has wisely reacted by spilling at least some of the beans on their new model, giving us these four photos and confirming the Liberty replacement’s name, Cherokee.

Jeep has only released a handful of shots of the trucklet’s new nose, not showing off the profile or rear view (we note that today’s spy shots didn’t show the rear, either), but they do give the best look yet at what is likely to be one of the most polarizing designs to come out in 2014. The crimped-back seven-slot grille is a big enough design change that it will take some getting used to, but add in the Cherokee’s aggressive split-lens headlamp treatment and you’ve got the makings of a design revolution.

No word yet on powertrain, pricing, or availability, but previous rumors have the Cherokee riding atop an Alfa Romeo-derived platform also shared with the Dodge Dart, which will likely mean that it carries front and all-wheel drive variants and four-cylinder power.

What do you think? Have a look at the images in our gallery and take a gander at the brief press release below, then leave your thoughts in Comments. Is the 2014 Cherokee better or worse now that you have a clear look at it?

Jeep Releases First Official Photos of 2014 Cherokee [2013 New York Auto Show]

By Erik Johnson

2014 Jeep Cherokee

The Jeep Cherokee is back. The sparse release accompanying these images—spat out on the heels of clandestine photos published today by Jalopnik, as well as the rather accurate rendering we published last month—confirms that the Liberty replacement will resurrect the hallowed badge when it debuts in late March. (At least in the U.S.; the Liberty was badged as a Cherokee for other markets.) The name change is something we’ve been discussing as far back as early last summer.

While official details won’t arrive until the New York auto show next month, we have a good idea of what to expect from the 2014 Cherokee. Built at Jeep’s Toledo plant on a version of the front-drive Compact U.S. Wide bones that underpin the Dodge Dart, it’s a solid bet that the engine bay will host four-cylinder and V-6 power. The identity of the former is still a mystery—The Dart’s 1.4-liter turbo four or Alfa’s 1.8-liter turbo four remain strong possibilities—but the V-6 will be a 3.2-liter version of Chrysler’s corporate Pentastar engine. We also expect ZF’s nine-speed automatic transmission, which would more than double the number of forward ratios available in the Liberty. (Read more about the 2014 Cherokee.)

As for the new Cherokee’s styling, it’s, um, rather funky. The Jeep badge is present, as is the all-important seven-slot grille, but the overall look eschews the old XJ’s boxy style in favor of softer crossover lines. It’s an aesthetic philosophy adopted by the latest Grand Cherokee, but that model has a more conventional front end: The face of the Cherokee thus far proves difficult to love. It features a Nissan Juke–light arrangement, with LED running lamps and turn signals arrayed up top and the headlights embedded in separate pods below. At least these professional shots—as well as the dark paint and the fact that it appears to be a top-spec trim with body-color bumpers—cast it in better light than does the gray-cladded and presumably base example that appeared on Jalopnik.

Even without taking the new look into account, it’s likely going to be tough to get the Jeep faithful to accept the Cherokee name on a front-drive-based suburban transportation pod, no matter how many versions end up wearing a Trail Rated badge. That said, the Liberty’s rough-and-tumble driving dynamics and unrefined character created few converts. Unfortunately for purists, we think we know which approach ultimately will prove most successful for Jeep.

Video: Chrysler 100 hatchback caught cruising around Santa Monica

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

A coming hatchback said to be called the Chrysler 100 has been caught on video traipsing around Santa Monica by Autoblog reader Zach Dillman. Still wearing the scrapyard assemblage of Alfa Romeo Giulietta body panels as it was when spy photographers began capturing it last summer, its arrival date is still a question mark: some outlets have reported that it will go on sale this year, others have said it won’t be in showrooms until 2016.

In fact, quite a few questions remain. Based on Fiat’s Compact US Wide (CUSW) platform that supports the Dodge Dart and expected to be about the same size, the 100 is thought to be a small premium hatchback that will be priced above the Dart and below the Chrysler 200, with the idea that it can challenge the Ford Focus and Hyunda Elantra at the value end and the Buick Verano and Acura ILX at the premium end. Word is that there will be no sedan version.

It looks like there’ll be plenty of gewgaws inside, with buttons for Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning and a button to toggle the traction control.

Some rumors say the 100 will only get four-cylinder engines, other rumors suggest it could get a V6 to justify the premium aspirations and the price bump over the Dart, and an “E85 Only!” sticker spotted in one of the mules last summer has other rumormongers wondering if it will get a ethanol-capable version of a new powerplant that isn’t the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. It looks like there will be paddleshifters for getting through the gears, and front-wheel drive is the easy bet, all-wheel drive the long-shot shocker.

At the end of the video, a second mule gets spotted in Santa Monica, this being one of a legion of jacked-up Franken-Giulietta mules that’s been seen around the country for a while now. It could be either a new Jeep Liberty mule or a replacement for the Compass/Patriot. See for yourself in the videos below.

Ford Unveils Global Rallycross–Spec Fiesta ST Racer [2013 Chicago Auto Show]

By John Lamm

Ford Racing and OlsbergsMSE will build Ford Fiesta ST race cars to compete in the 2013 Global Rallycross Championship driven by two-time GRC champion Tanner Foust and 2012 runner-up Brian Deegan. The Fiesta ST race car will debut at the 2013 Chicago auto show. In addition, Ken Block and his Hoonigan Racing Division also will compete with a Fiesta ST in GRC rounds plus the four X Games events that include Rallycross—the well-known games in Los Angeles and events in Brazil, Spain, and Germany.

How quick is the OlsbergsMSE Fiesta ST GRC? How about a 0-to-60-mph time of 2.0 seconds. And how does it do that? OlsbergsMSE starts with a 2.0-liter Ford twin-cam Duratech four, caps it with its own cylinder head, and adds a Magnaflow exhaust and a big Garrett turbo. Remember, this is just a 2.o-liter turbo four, but it produces 550-plus horsepower (most likely closer to 600) and more than 590 lb-ft of torque. OlsbergsMSE builds the transmission and all-wheel-drive system including the gearshift and—important in these cars—the hydraulic handbrake. The shocks are from Öhlins, springs from Eibach, brakes via Alcon and the 17-inch wheels are Motegis. OlsbergsMSE does the exterior body panels in Kevlar, and the rear spoiler in carbon fiber. Inside is an AIM digital dash.

Ford is coming off a successful 2013 GRC season with one-two finishes at Charlotte, Las Vegas Motor Speedways, and at SEMA, plus a podium sweep at Texas Motor Speedway. It also scored silver and bronze medals in last summer’s X Games. Ford has been the GRC manufacturers champion for the past two years, but the strongest competition comes from crosstown rivals in the form of  Travis Pastrana, the 17-time X Games gold medalist who will be competing in a 600-hp Dodge Dart racer.

2013 Dodge Dart Mopar ’13: Black and Blue and Mopar All Over [2013 Chicago Auto Show]

By Andrew Wendler

Dodge Dart Mopar ’13” src=”http://blog.caranddriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/2013-Dodge-Dart-Mopar-13-placement-626×382.jpg” alt=”2013 Dodge Dart Mopar ’13” width=”626″ height=”382″ />

For the fourth time in the same number of years, the gang over at Mopar—Chrysler’s service, parts, and customer-care brand—have pulled a car from the Chrysler Group lineup and massaged it into a limited-edition vehicle to showcase some of their latest developments in technology and performance. Having already performed its magic on a trifecta of V-8–powered rear-wheel-drive models—Dodges Challenger and Charger, and the Chrysler 300—it seems fitting that for 2013, Mopar would turn its attention to one of the Group’s newest members, the Dodge Dart. Official: Kia teases Cross GT concept for Chicago debut

By Zach Bowman

Kia CrossGT Concept

Kia is headed to the Chicago Auto Show with a new concept. Details are scarce on the Cross GT at the moment, but we know the machine was penned as a luxury crossover. Larger than the current Sorento, we would wager there’s three rows of seating on board. And while it’s unclear whether or not Kia plans to bring something similar to market, we like what we see in the shadowy teaser above. The Cross GT seems to wear the company’s “tiger nose” styling well, and the familiar D-pillar upkick ties the machine in nicely with the rest of the company’s people-movers.

The 2013 Chicago Auto Show kicks off on February 7th, and should feature a number of interesting reveals. Those include the upcoming Toyota Tundra and what could be a special version of the Dodge Dart. Stay tuned for our live coverage on the show floor.
