Video: Fast and Furious 6 trailer redone with R/C cars
Filed under:
Whether or not you’ve seen and judged the trailer for the audio-oculo-neural assault that will be Fast and Furious 6 – you know, the one where an Alfa Romeo hatchback pulls down a military cargo jet at full throttle and then a pristine Dodge Charger erupts from the jet’s flaming nosecone – we’d like to recommend you check out a facsimile made with R/C cars. That means that none of the classic and current metal our own Michael Harley got to check out on the Universal lot was harmed during filming.
NitroRCX replaced all but a few of the driving scenes in trailer with its own R/C creations, and it’s a goof to watch – they’ve made a delightful parody of a franchise that’s become parodic. They even kept the flaming jet crash, but used an arguably cooler stand-in. You can watch the NitroRCX take below, and we’ve also added the actual movie trailer so you can compare and contrast.

2013 Dodge Challenger SRT8 Core Debuts: Just the Basics, All the Power [2013 Chicago Auto Show]
By Tony Swan
What does “back-to-basics performance” mean to you? If you reached driving age during the heyday of the all-American muscle car, it means tire-shredding, straight-ahead performance. And if you haven’t driven muscle cars since then, this new SRT edition of the Dodge Challenger should be a pleasant experience. Not only will it shred its rear tires, just like the mighty muscle machines of yesteryear, it also will actually stop.SRT stands for Chrysler’s Street and Racing Technology group, which has been established as a separate brand within the corporate umbrella, à la BMW’s M group and the AMG operation at Mercedes. The mission is to add heat to existing Chrysler vehicles, although in this case, with plenty of fire under the hood already, most of the added heat is on the outside of the car.
The heart of this and other SRT back-to-basics packages introduced at the Chicago auto show is Chrysler’s 392-cubic-inch (6.4-liter) Hemi V-8, paired here with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. Output is 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, and with its standard launch control, the SRT go-faster crew forecasts 0-to-60 mph in less than five seconds and a top speed of 182 mph with the manual gearbox (175 with the automatic). When we last tested the Challenger SRT8, we hit 60 in 4.5 seconds and ripped through the quarter in 12.9. Fuel economy is respectable at 23 mpg highway, per the EPA, thanks in part to cylinder deactivation.
Cosmetic heat includes two new look-at-me colors—Hemi Orange and Plum Crazy, both pearl coats—plus the current range of Challenger paint choices. Other distinctions include a blacked-out grille, black SRT rear spoiler, black 392 front-fender decals, 20-inch aluminum wheels with black detailing, and black Brembo brake calipers.
- First Drive: 2013 SRT Viper / Viper GTS
- Instrumented Test: 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee
- Instrumented Test: 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8
The interior borrows “Ballistic” cloth seat inserts from the new SRT Viper, replacing the cowhides of the regular Challenger SRT8. This car thus features dark-gray cloth bolsters and panel inserts, as well as faux carbon-fiber center-stack and center-console trim.
SRT characterizes this and concurrent versions of the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger as “Core” models, basically slightly de-contented versions of the regular SRT cars. Pricing for the Challenger SRT8 Core is just a shade under $40K—$39,990—before you factor in about a grand for gas-guzzler tax. (A non-Core Challenger SRT8 runs $45,800; we’ve asked Dodge for clarification on the rest of the content deleted to create the Core car.) It’s due in …read more

Report: Chevy exec confirms SS production model reveal at Daytona on Feb 16
Filed under:
The 2014 Chevrolet SS will make its racing debut for the 2013 Daytona 500, but the production version of the car will get its official unveiling on February 16 in Daytona, a week before The Great American Race. According to a report by Automotive News, the reveal has been confirmed by Jim Campbell, Chevy’s US vice president of performance and motorsports. With the departure of the Dodge Charger, the new Chevrolet racecar will be the only competitor to feature a V8, rear-wheel-drive layout in both street and NASCAR form.
NASCAR fans will be able to see the new fullsize performance-oriented sedan on display in the festivities leading up to the Daytona 500, but the car won’t go on sale until later in the year. The Australian-built Chevy SS will be a low-volume performance model, and it will be priced above the 2014 Impala, which starts at $27,535.

Quick Spin: 2013 Dodge Charger AWD Sport
Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Dodge, Quick Spins

We won’t beat around the bush: The all-wheel-drive Dodge Charger is not a brand new car. This generation launched in 2011, AWD models and all. But for 2013, Chrysler has added an optional sport package to the AWD model, available with both the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 or the sweet, sweet 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The upgrades for this new sport pack are mainly cosmetic; a gloss black grille, new 19-inch alloy wheels and body-colored rear spoiler make up the list of exterior changes. Inside, there are new sport seats and paddle shifters, and the eight-speed automatic transmission has been reflashed for better performance.
But because vehicles like the Dodge Charger mainly stick out in our minds as being rear-drive bruisers, Chrysler wanted to give us the opportunity to test out the LX platform’s foul-weather prowess. And perhaps no place more appropriate to test such a system was way up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the dead of winter.
Driving Notes
- It’s not a new formula by any means, but we still adore the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 under the hood of the Charger. 370 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque are more than enough motivation to get this hefty (4,450-pound) sedan up and moving with a quickness, even with all-wheel drive.
- The new eight-speed automatic ‘box is really slick here in the Charger, and unlike other eight-cog units, you won’t find the transmission frequently jumping back and forth between gears.
- Even with eight gears to keep the engine revving for efficiency, fuel economy isn’t anything stellar. Combined with all-wheel drive, the Charger R/T AWD Sport achieves 15 miles per gallon in the city or 23 mpg on the highway. Still, that’s about par for the class – a two-wheel-drive Hyundai Genesis with the 5.0-liter V8 achieves 16/25 mpg.
- On our drive through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, we mostly encountered long stretches of two-lane backroads that, while throwing the occasional curve our way, were mostly straight and flat. This is ideal Charger territory, as the big sedan is perfectly poised to be a solid, comfortable highway cruiser above all.
- We had the chance to pilot the Charger AWD Sport around a few handling courses in the snow, and there, the car offered safe amounts of fun. The Charger uses a rear-biased AWD system that only sends power to the front wheels when moments of slip or poor traction are encountered, but this means enthusiasts who like a bit of tail-wagging hooliganism in the snow will be very happy.
- Even with that rear bias, the big Dodge never failed to snap itself back into line when we intentionally tried to break its butt loose. And since we were able to drive the Charger on a number of snowy, icy test courses, it was easy to see that this AWD system works well in all types of road conditions.
- After so many years of lackluster cabins, it’s nice to be able to praise Chrysler interiors. Here in the Charger, we found both the sport cloth and leather seats to be immensely comfortable, and the overall fit and finish to the interior is quite nice. We especially like the carbon fiber-look trim pieces added to the Sport model for 2013.
- Perhaps the best thing about the Charger’s interior is the Chrysler UConnect system – there’s a reason why it’s an award-winning piece of technology. The 8.4-inch screen is super easy to navigate, but this system’s biggest win is just how responsive it is to touch commands. Other automakers really should take note.
- What’s great about this whole package is that the fullsize, loaded sedan tops out under the $40,000 mark. That’s comparable to fully optioned midsize sedans these days (like a Ford Fusion Titanium, for instance). Yes, those smaller cars are no doubt better on fuel economy, but for bang-for-the-buck performance, the Charger is really something special.

Mystery Mopar Limited Edition Teased Prior to Chicago Debut [2013 Chicago Auto Show]

Working from the inside out, Chrysler has released a single interior image of its upcoming Mopar ’13 limited-edition vehicle. Set to debut next month at the Chicago auto show, the Mopar ’13 follows in the footsteps of the limited-edition Mopar ’10 Dodge Challenger, Mopar ’11 Dodge Charger, and Mopar ’12 Chrysler 300. The sole image provided reveals just one fact about the vehicle, which is that the seats will be upholstered in a brilliant-blue-and-black scheme.
Considering Mopar’s history of introducing features that eventually make their way into rank-and-file Chrysler vehicles, it’s a good bet the Mopar ’13 vehicle will showcase at least one example of custom or performance-enhancing technology. Previous Chrysler and industry firsts introduced on Mopar limited editions include electronic owners manuals, wireless charging for portable devices, and—much to the dismay of teenagers everywhere—EVTS, an electronic tracking system that texts owners when their vehicle exceeds pre-set speed or distance parameters.
- Short Take Road Test: 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392
- Short Take Road Test: 2011 Mopar Ram Runner
- Comparison Test: BMW X5 M vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, Porsche Cayenne Turbo
“This vehicle is the perfect canvas for personalization and customization,” said Mopar president and CEO Pietro Gorlier. “We couldn’t wait to get our hands on it and give it the Mopar treatment.” We’re sure that Gorlier’s excitement about modifying a mystery Chrysler product is genuine, but it’s just so hard to know for sure without knowing which model, exactly, Chrysler’s go-fast arm is working on. But if the upholstery’s any indicator, regardless of which model the Mopar ’13 turns out to be, it’ll be tough to miss.

Dodge Charger
The current Dodge Charger is a four-door, rear- or all-wheel drive large sedan, though it has been built in many guises over the years. Its main competition is the Ford Taurus, Hyundai Genesis, Nissan Maxima and Chevrolet Impala, though in R/T and SRT8 form it has few direct rivals. Priced from around $25,000 to $40,000, the Charger is available…
