Auctions: First production 2014 Corvette Stingray Convertible auctioned for a cool million

By Michael Harley

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

Barrett-Jackson auctioned off the first production 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible in Palm Beach this evening, with the open-top two-seater commanding a huge winning bid of $1,000,000 from Rick Hendrick, owner of NASCAR team Hendrick Motorsports.

While the Geneva Motor Show C7 prototype is pictured above (it also was shown at Barrett-Jackson), Hendrick won rights to the first retail production model (VIN undetermined at this time), allowing him to choose both color and options before his V8 sports car rolls off the assembly line in the near future. Hopefully, by the time that happens, we will all know more about its soft convertible top, double-bubble tonneau and the mechanism that opens and lowers the fully automatic roof at speeds upwards of 30 mph.

It is worth mentioning that proceeds from the sale of this first C7 droptop will benefit the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer institute, one of 40 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States that strives to prevent, detect and eradicate all forms of cancer. The General Motors Foundation is a longtime supporter of Karmanos, with nearly $6 million in support over the last 15 years.

Report: Chrysler begins shipping 2013 SRT Viper

By Jeffrey N. Ross

2013 SRT Viper - front three-quarter view at speed in the rain

Filed under:

Almost a year to the day after SRT president and CEO Ralph Gilles first introduced – and kissed the fender of – the 2013 SRT Viper at the 2012 New York Auto Show, the high-performance coupe has begun shipping to dealers. The first production cars started rolling off the line at Chrysler’s Conner Avenue Assembly plant in Detroit back in January (a facility Gilles lovingly compares to Santa’s workshop), but The Detroit News is reporting that the cars just started heading to customers across the US on Sunday.

Two of the first examples destined for driveways include a Stryker Red example that was the very 2013 Viper to be sold (the car was won by Scott Thomas of Oklahoma City at a Barrett-Jackson charity auction for cancer for $300,000), along with a white example headed to Gilles’ personal collection. The report says that Gilles took delivery of his Viper and put just 30 miles on it before heading to New York for this week’s auto show. What, he didn’t drive?

The second segment sends Jessi and Patrick to Scottsdale, Arizona for the biggest Barrett-Jackson auction of them all, where we learn not every owner leaves with a smile once the gavel falls. 2014 Corvette Stingray Convertible Breaks Cover In Geneva

By Kurt Ernst

The 2014 Corvette Stingray will debut at the Geneva Motor Show – image: GM Corp

Do you prefer your Corvettes with a view of the sky, and your driving with wind through your hair? Here’s some good news, then: the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will make its official debut on March 5 at the Geneva Motor Show. Iconic in America, the Corvette is also revered in much of the world, to the point that Chevrolet’s president and managing director for Europe, Susan Docherty, calls the car “the face of Chevrolet the world over.”

Unveiling the Stingray convertible in Switzerland is likely a sign that GM will place greater emphasis on global sales of its halo sports car than in years past. Given the current state of the E.U.’s economy, though, we’re not sure that GM can count on the new Stingray adding much to Chevrolet Europe’s bottom line in 2013. There’s always China, we suppose.

Corvette’s chief engineer, Tadge Juechter, assures fans that the Stingray convertible will be every bit the sports car that the Stingray coupe is. In Juechter’s words, “Every Corvette is designed at the outset as an open car.” Fitting, since that’s how the Corvette began life in 1953.

Following the Stingray convertible’s Geneva debut, the first production car will cross the block at Barrett-Jackson’s Palm Beach, Florida, auction in April. Proceeds from the sale will go to support the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, and we’re pretty sure that the sale price will rival the $1.05 million paid for the first production 2014 Corvette Stingray at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale, Arizona, auction in January.

Official: Chevy confirms Corvette Stingray Convertible for Geneva

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible rendering - top down

Filed under:

Want proof that General Motors has increased global ambitions for its 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray? It’s staging the world premiere of the model’s convertible variant at the Geneva Motor Show early next month.

As previously rumored, the droptop rendered above will debut at the Swiss show, making its first appearance anywhere on March 5. According to Susan Docherty, president and managing director of Chevrolet, the location makes sense because Corvette “…is an icon that has long been recognized and admired even in countries where it’s never officially been offered.”

While neither Chevrolet nor the Corvette has a major sales presence in Switzerland, the Bowtie’s European headquarters is located in Zurich (about three hours to the northeast of Geneva) and GM has made it clear that it wants to build the Chevrolet brand up across Europe.

In other news, Chevrolet has announced that it will auction off the first retail Corvette Convertible for charity, at Barrett-Jackson’s Palm Beach auction. The proceeds of the sale will go to the Michigan-based Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. Autoblog regulars may remember that the very first C7 Coupe was auctioned off for charity last month by Barrett-Jackson at its Arizona sale, drawing a cool $1.1M.

Auctions: 1960 Ferrari 250 GT sells for over $8 million in record-setting RM auction weekend

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

2013 RM Arizona Auction - Ferrari for sale

Although the vast majority of eyeballs were tuned to the madness at Barrett-Jackson this past weekend, that televised car auction wasn’t the only high-dollar game in Arizona. RM Auctions brought its usual gaggle of exotic wares to the desert, and the car that came out on top sold for much more than Barrett-Jackson’s highest sale, the Batmobile.

Coming out on top at RM last weekend was Lot 164, a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta ‘Competizione’ that sold for a massive $8,140,000 – the buyer could’ve nearly bought two Barris Batmobiles for that chunk of change. Lot 122, a 1967 Shelby 427 ‘Semi-Competition’ Cobra, stood at $2,007,500 in second place, just in front of Lot 145, a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, which sold for $1,842,500.

After all said and done, RM reported $36.4 million in sales. That’s a record for RM in Arizona, even though the total number of lots for 2013 was reduced significantly. Eight machines cracked the million-dollar mark, and you can see all of them in the press release right down below or peruse all of the auction results here. But first, be sure to scroll through our high-res image gallery of live photos above.

In case you happened to miss it, the 2013 edition the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, has come and gone. And, as usual, Autoblog was there in full force on the two biggest days of the event, Friday and Saturday.

Here are some of the most interesting statistics from the week-long event:

  • The $108,766,069 in gross sales is a 17% increase over 2012
  • 300,000 peak attendance
  • At $4.62 million, the 1966 Batmobile was the most expensive car sold
  • The first 2014 Corvette Stingray sent $1.1 million to charity

Corvette Auctions Raise Over $1.8 Million For Charity

While many of you were enjoying a long, three-day weekend or watching the inaugural festivities from Washington, D.C., another kind of event was being staged in Scottsdale, Arizona — one with outstanding collector cars that raised millions of dollars for charity. In fact, by the time the final gavel fell at the Barrett-Jackson auction on Sunday…

Auctions: 1956 Chrysler Diablo Concept dances with the devil for $1.375 million at Barrett-Jackson [w/video]

1956 Chrysler Diablo Concept

It’s always special when a classic concept car goes up for auction, and that was surely the case as this 1956 Chrysler Diablo Concept crossed the auction block at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson event with a top bid of $1,375,000.

Designed by the famed Virgil Exner Sr. in collaboration with Italian styling house Ghia, this show car is said to have been designed in a wind tunnel after being drawn by Exner himself. Underneath the beautiful bodywork lies the chassis of a 1956 Chrysler 300, fitted with a 392-cubic-inch V8 engine with dual four-barrel carbs.

You may have a hard time telling from the live image gallery above, but this machine measures just under 21 feet long. That’s classic Americana with Italian flair. Read the official auction description and watch a video of the Diablo Concept crossing the auction block below.

Auctions: 1947 Talbot-Lago T-26 Grand Sport passes $2 million mark at Barrett-Jackson

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

1947 Talbot-Lago T-26 Grand Sport

If you’re not familiar with the Talbot-Lago brand, well… you’re not alone. Born out of the collapsed Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq by an engineer named Antonio Lago, who turned the automaker into a strong competitor in racing. The machine you see above, hailing from 1947, is based on the short-wheelbase chassis used for racing with bodywork designed by Franay.

Suffice it to say, this is a very rare machine, powered by a high-performance 4.5-liter six-cylinder engine with three carburetors mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. Apparently the car was found languishing in Tennessee in 1988, and a thorough restoration was completed in 2004. After all was said and done at Barrett-Jackson, the car’s new owner found himself $2,035,000 lighter in the wallet.

See it in all its glory in our high-res image gallery above, and read through the auction description below.

1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona

We love the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona. It’s most definitely a classic, made famous in part by its appearance as Don Johnson‘s favored ride in the classic ’80s television series Miami Vice… but we won’t hold that against it.

The specific example you see above just crossed the block at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson extravaganza in Scottsdale, and it cleared a cool $495,000 after the buyer’s commission was factored in. The 1972 Daytona features a sweet-sounding V12 engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

Plus, it’s brown, with a tan interior. Stunning. Check it out in our high-res image gallery above, and be sure to read through its official auction description below.

Have you been playing Speed’s Hagerty Fantasy Bid game online? If not, you’re missing out on your chance to win this custom Shelby GT500 Mustang. Just thought you’d like to know…

Auctions: George W. Bush's 2009 Ford F-150 fizzles with $300,000 bid at Barrett-Jackson

George W. Bush's 2009 Ford F-150

Despite some truly impassioned pleading from Jay Leno himself – including calling on Arizona’s notoriously Republican-rich voters to beat the $600,000 level set the last time Leno sold a vehicle for this particular charity… in California – bidding for George Bush‘s 2009 Ford F-150 pickup truck stalled at $300,000.

All proceeds will be sent to the Fisher House Foundation, so at least it’s $300K going to a good cause. Feel free to check out the live image gallery above, which includes shots showing Leno’s skills helming the auction, and read through the official auction description below.

Auctions: First production 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray draws $1.1 million bid for charity at Barrett-Jackson

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

First Production 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

Barrett-Jackson has a long and storied history with the Chevrolet Corvette. For instance, back in 2008, Chevrolet auctioned off the very first of its new Corvette ZR1, earning a cool million bucks, and just last year the first 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible crossed the auction block for $600,000.

For the 2013 event, Chevrolet brought along the very show car we all fawned over at the Detroit Auto Show – the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. Bidders got to look at this car as they fought for the right to order the very first C7 that rolls off the showroom floor, and they’ll get to pick the color and options. We figure it’ll be loaded.

After it was all said and done, C7 Corvette numero uno sold for $1.1 million, with 100-percent of the proceeds going to benefit College for Creative Studies. Check out the car as it crossed the black carpet in high-res beauty above, and then read its official description below.

Original 1966 Batmobile

Well, that was exciting. We just watched the original Batmobile sell for a shocking $4,620,000, after all fees have been assessed. That makes this the most expensive vehicle sold (so far) here at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson car auction. Impressive.

The Batmobile was joined on stage by George Barris himself, who had previously been the car’s only owner. You can read all about the Batmobile here (and by scrolling down below for its official auction description), but what you really want to do is check out our high-res image gallery of the car crossing the auction block above. It was, to put it mildly, a mad house.

Auctions: Chevrolet Camaro COPO Convertible jumps from SEMA to Barrett-Jackson, pockets $400k for charity [w/video]

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

2012 Chevrolet Camaro COPO Convertible

Back at the 2012 SEMA event in Las Vegas, Chevrolet unveiled the car you see above, a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro COPO Convertible. Actually, that’s not quite accurate – this car is THE 2012 Chevrolet Camaro COPO Convertible. As in, the only one ever sold. There was one more produced, but it’s not leaving the GM Heritage Center any time soon. This one was just sold at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale for $400,000 exactly.

That sum will be donated to the American Heart Association, and the winner will take home this Inferno Orange Metallic COPO, complete with a 327-cubic-inch V8 topped by a 4.0-liter supercharger. The engine sends 550 horsepower to the rear drag slicks through a three-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Perfect for a run down the quarter mile, top-down style.

Check out our high-res image gallery from the block at Barrett-Jackson above, and don’t forget to watch a video of the COPO being auctioned below, along with the car’s official auction description. And don’t forget to play along with the crowd at the Hagerty Fantasy Bid game online for a chance to win a custom 2013 Shelby GT500.

Auctions: 1968 Shelby EXP 500 fails to sell at Barrett-Jackson despite $1.8 million bid [w/video]

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

1968 Shelby EXP 500

EXP, in the case of the 1968 Ford Mustang you see above, stands for Experimental. You see, this is one of the cars used by the Shelby American team in the development of a long list of classic Shelby Mustang models.

The car, powered by a 390-cubic-inch V8 engine and known internally as The Green Hornet, underwent a huge number of upgrade sessions that saw it receive experimental fuel injection, independent rear suspension and unique disc brakes. That’s right, a Ford Mustang with IRS!

In a somewhat baffling turn of events, despite a top bid of $1.8 million, The Green Hornet’s reserve price wasn’t met, meaning it stays with its current owner for at least one more auction cycle. Have a good look at our image gallery above, and be sure to watch the video below that shows all the fast and furious bidding action. You can also see some additional live footage here from Speed.

Auctions: One-off 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra raises $200k for charity at Barrett-Jackson [w/video]

2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra

You can count on the fact that there will be plenty of tributes to the late Carroll Shelby over the next several months and years – most of them taking the vehicular shape of the Ford Mustang, we’d wager. The one you see above was created by a group called Friends of Carroll and was unveiled by Edsel Ford II, Ford marketing VP Jim Farley and Shelby American President John Luft at the 2012 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

The 2013 GT500’s stock 662-horsepower 5.8-liter V8 engine has seen its power bumped to an even 850 horses with upgrades provided by Ford Racing. A widebody kit from Shelby covers up the 13-inch-wide rear wheels and 345-series tires. The car is painted in Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes – a classic color combination seen on many Cobra roadsters from the 1960s.

All proceeds from this sale at Barrett-Jackson will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Check out our live image gallery above and peruse a video of the car’s time on the auction block as well as the official auction description below. If you want to have some fun while watching the auction action, click here to take part in the Hagerty Fantasy Bid online game… after all, you could win a new GT500 of your own.

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

2013 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction

While the big-ticket items sold at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale usually hit the block on Saturday, Friday often brings with it a few interesting finds. This year was no different. With an assortment of vehicles ranging from an original 1969 Chevrolet Camaro COPO with a 427-cubic-inch V8 and four-speed manual transmission to a 1929 Ford AA Custom Popcorn truck, you never can tell what’s going to show up at Barrett-Jackson.

It’s impossible to miss a bright tangerine Willy’s Roadster, and we could hardly pass up the opportunity to watch one of the infamous Unique Performance Eleanor replica cars cross the auction block. Really, we just pointed our lenses at whatever happened to catch our eye.

Check out the fruits of our labors in the high-res image gallery of live photos above. Each of the cars you’ll see is captioned with the its appropriate make and model, plus the amount it finally sold for. Enjoy!

Auctions: 1986 Porsche 959 Prototype at Barrett-Jackson sees gavel fall at $440,000

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

1986 Porsche 959 Prototype

Fans of Porsche in America have longed for the chance to buy a 959 ever since the German automaker produced and sold it (well, sold it everywhere but the United States…) in the 1980s. Well, they just had their chance. The car you see above is a Porsche 959 prototype built in 1986, and only one other running prototype still exists.

The 959 prototype can’t be driven on public roads, as it carries no such certification. Somehow, we doubt that matters all that much to the new buyer – this one is probably going to be sitting in a collection. When the gavel finally fell, bidding had reached $400,000, plus a 10-percent buyer’s fee.

Check out our high-res image gallery above to see this prototype up close, and scroll down below to watch a video of it crossing the auction block and for its official auction description.
