Report: Holden could get crossover based on Chevy Cruze

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

During a discussion of the next-generation Holden Commodore and the General Motors Zeta platform, the question of an Australian-built SUV came up. Dave Leone, GM‘s executive chief engineer for luxury and rear-wheel-drive cars, wouldn’t go any further than to say “that could be very possible,” but recent events at Holden only reinforce the notion that we won’t have any idea what is and isn’t possible at the Aussie branch until it’s actually done.

If there were such an SUV in the Holden pipeline, speculation is that it could be built on the platform for the next-generation Chevrolet Cruze, and that it could send the Captiva – imported to australia from Thailand – into retirement. That’s a lot of coulds, but it’s all Aussie-market watchers have as they try to figure out what Holden’s going to do for the next nine years it has pledged to build cars in Oz. Alongside that Cruze, a next-generation VJ Commodore is also promised and a locally-built SUV might make sense as a third model.

GM says diesel Chevrolet Cruze gets 46 mpg

General Motors Co. says the new diesel version of the Chevrolet Cruze gets 46 miles per gallon on the highway, making it more efficient than some hybrids.

GM announced the U.S. EPA‘s fuel economy numbers for the diesel Cruze Wednesday.

At 46 mpg, the diesel Cruze matches the highway fuel economy of the Toyota Prius C subcompact. But the regular Prius hybrid still does better, at 48 mpg.

The Cruze beats its closest competitor, the diesel Volkswagen Jetta, which gets 42 mpg on the highway.

The diesel Cruze goes on sale next month in Baltimore, Milwaukee and other markets where diesels are popular. It arrives in the rest of the U.S. and Canada this fall.

It starts at $25,695. That’s $7,755 more than the base price on a gas-powered Cruze.

Official: Ford, GM to collaborate on 9- and 10-speed transmissions

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

Back in October, there were reports that General Motors and Ford Motor Company were hard at work co-developing new nine- and ten-speed automatic transmissions, and now both automakers have confirmed this joint operation. While there are no specific vehicles mentioned to receive either transmission, a collaborative press release issued by GM and Ford mention that the transmission will be designed for front- and rear-wheel-drive cars, crossovers, trucks and SUVs.

These aren’t the first powertrain components developed jointly between these cross-town rivals, either. The six-speed automatic currently used in vehicles like the Ford Edge, Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Cruze and Chevrolet Equinox was engineered in a similar fashion. As is the case with this existing transmission, both automakers will assist in the design, development and testing of the new transmissions, but each will build its own units in its own factories. Scroll down for the official press release.

GM Plans to Invest $332 Million in 4 U.S. Factories

By The Associated Press

By TOM KRISHER

DETROIT — General Motors plans to invest $332 million into four factories in three Great Lakes states to build new, more efficient engines and transmissions.

The spending at plants in Toledo, Ohio; Bedford, Ind.; and Flint and Bay City, Mich., will allow the company to build a new V-6 engine, a new small motor and new eight-speed automatic transmissions, GM said Thursday. The company also added $46 million to a prior investment at plants in Romulus and Saginaw, Mich., to build the new V-6.

No jobs will be added, but General Motors Co. (GM) said the investments preserve 1,650 jobs at the six factories.

The investment also will help GM build more six-speed automatic transmissions as auto sales continue to rise in the U.S. Sales this year are expected to climb as high as 15.5 million cars and trucks, 1 million more than last year. Through March, GM sales are up just over 9 percent.

GM wouldn’t give details about the new engines and transmissions, nor would it say what cars and trucks would get the new powertrains. It also wouldn’t say exactly when they would be available, for fear of tipping competitors to its product plans.

The company did say that the money will help start a new family of three- and four-cylinder engines that range from 1 liter to 1.5 liters. Presently the smallest motor GM makes in the U.S. is a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder that goes into the Chevrolet Cruze and Sonic, as well as other models.

Last summer CEO Dan Akerson told employees that the company was behind its competitors in engines and transmissions, saying that GM has six-speed transmissions when competitors have up to 10 gears. Transmissions with more gears allow engines to do less work and save fuel.

The investments announced Thursday should improve GM‘s technology in relation to its competitors, said Arvin Jones, GM North America manufacturing manager. “We think the investments we’re making will give us a competitive advantage and position us very well,” he told reporters.

The investments are part of $1.5 billion that GM plans to spend on its North American factories this year. So far the company has announced projects totaling $1.2 billion in the U.S. Another $250 million was announced for a GM assembly plant in Ingersoll, Canada.

The investments announced Thursday include:

  • $215 million for the Flint Engine Operations in Flint, Mich., where the new three- and four-cylinder engines will be built. The plant also will get upgraded machinery for a V-6 engine that it currently builds.
  • $55.7 million for Toledo Transmission Operations in Toledo, Ohio, to build a new eight-speed transmission and expand capacity to build an existing six-speed transmission. The new transmission will be used in “numerous” GM vehicles by the end of 2016, the company said in a statement.

Report: Cadillac ATS was almost front-wheel drive

By Michael Harley

Filed under:

“We were going to do a front-wheel drive Cadillac compact off of Delta because it was going to be less expensive,” Doug Parks, General Motors‘ vice president of global product programs, told the Automotive News during the Detroit Auto Show in January of this year. That sentence, referring to early ATS discussions more than five years ago – a period when the automaker, and the industry, was struggling – reveals that Cadillac’s highly acclaimed rear-wheel drive compact sedan almost never happened.

Parks revealed that that automaker actually built a 2.0-liter test mule, on GM’s Delta platform (shared with the Chevrolet Cruze and Buick Verano) and tested it in Europe. While the prototype was “pretty darn good,” according to Parks, the team realized that in order to compete against Mercedes-Benz and BMW it would have to invest in a new rear-wheel drive platform.

The resulting all-new Alpha platform would eventually underpin the Cadillac ATS, and many would argue that its balanced rear-wheel drive chassis is its single most important attribute. Thankfully, the Alpha’s goodness won’t stop with the ATS. The upcoming 2014 Cadillac CTS and the future Camaro will also share its architecture, meaning the Cimarron will remain a distant memory.

How Much, Good Lookin’? 2014 Kia Forte Priced from $16,700

By Alexander Stoklosa

2014 Kia Forte EX GDI sedan

Kia’s redesigned 2014 Forte sedan is a handsome piece, and it’s larger and even better-equipped than the car it replaces. All of that added goodness, however, will only cost buyers an additional $525 relative to the least-expensive 2013 model. Kia has released pricing for the new Forte—which starts at $16,700—and released EPA fuel-economy ratings for one of the Forte’s two available powertrains. Like last year, the 2014 Forte sedan comes in LX and EX flavors, although the previously available SX trim level is absent for now. A new five-door Forte soon will replace the outgoing hatchback, but a successor to the two-door Forte Koup likely is a few years away.

The entry-level LX comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission and a 148-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. A six-speed automatic is optional, while the uplevel EX trim level gets a standard automatic and a more powerful 173-hp, 2.0-liter four with direct injection. (Yeah, we’re just as bummed as you are that the zestier engine cannot be paired with a stick.) The 2.0-liter is rated for 24 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway, which is pretty much par for the compact class. Ratings for the 1.8-liter are forthcoming. In terms of features, the LX comes standard with power windows, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, Bluetooth, and heated power-folding mirrors. Besides adding the burlier engine, stepping up to the EX brings Kia’s second-generation UVO infotainment system, 16-inch aluminum wheels, backup camera, cruise control, Flex Steering with three driver-selectable steering modes, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and keyless entry. Full pricing and option breakdown below:

Forte LX: $16,700 + $1500 for six-speed automatic transmission; available Popular package ($900) adds 16-inch aluminum wheels, keyless entry, cruise control, two additional audio system speakers, sliding center armrest, rear center armrest, soft-touch front door panels, and mirrors with integrated turn indicators.

Forte EX: $20,200; available Premium package ($2600) adds sunroof, leather seats, 10-way power driver’s seat with memory, heated front and rear seats with driver’s seat ventilation, heated steering wheel, push-button start, illuminated exterior door handles, and puddle lamps; requires $300 17-inch aluminum wheels. The Technology package ($2300) brings navigation, a 4.2-inch color gauge-cluster display, HID headlights, LED taillights, and dual-zone automatic climate control; buyers must spec the Premium package to get the Tech bundle.

Compared to compact-segment stalwarts like the Ford Focus, Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic, Volkswagen Jetta, and the newcomer Dodge Dart, the Forte’s pricing is fairly competitive, with a base price that matches up or undercuts some of those cars’ mid-level trims. While that may not seem terribly flattering for the Kia, its bevy of standard features puts it, in base trim, closer to the other offerings’ mid-level trims. At the top end, a loaded Forte EX rings in at $25,400. A similarly spec’d Dart Limited (with the base, 2.0-liter four, not the optional 1.4-liter turbo four and dual-clutch automatic) or …read more

Opel Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTI: A 120-mph, 50-mpg Entry-Level Van [2013 Geneva Auto Show]

By Jens Meiners

2013 Geneva Auto Show full coverage

General Motors finally is waking up to the idea of diesel passenger cars in the U.S. market, evidenced by the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze diesel. Europe, however, is still streets ahead. The Old World likes vehicles that are practical and efficient—such as the Opel Zafira, a high-roof people mover based on the Astra. It now comes with an entry-level, 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel that makes 134 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to propel the Zafira up to a full 120 mph, while fuel consumption is a mere 57.4 mpg in the European cycle. In real-world driving, it should get close to 50 mpg.

Opel claims that the new 1.6 diesel is the “cleanest diesel in the history of the company,” with an EU-6 emissions rating. The company also claims that the engine sets “benchmarks for performance with its high power and torque density but also for refinement.” That might be true in the 1.6-liter segment, but as far as power goes, we’d prefer the Zafira 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI with its 195-hp, 295-lb-ft engine. For reference, the U.S.-market Cruze diesel comes with a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel that makes 148 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. That is an excellent start. The Opel Zafira won’t come to the U.S., though; the 1.6-liter diesel could, as it would fit into every Delta- and Epsilon-platform GM car.

In Europe, the Zafira competes with the Ford C-Max, which is conventionally powered over there, and the Volkswagen Touran. Opel’s sister brand, Chevrolet, offers the crossover-like Orlando in this segment.

Spy Shots: Next-gen Chevy Cruze caught cruising in the cold

By Jonathon Ramsey

Next-generation Chevrolet Cruze caught winter testing

Filed under:

Spy photographers have caught what looks like the next-generation Chevrolet Cruze out on snow patrol. The camo could be tricking our eyes, but it look like it has an even tidier, more rounded front end and even lower fenders in relation to the top of the hood. And either a chunk of camo has been wedged between the side mirrors and the doors, or the mirrors are up for revision, too.

The door handles have been moved up the side of the car, leading the way to a rear end that grows a bit in length. If the rumors are true, the coming second-generation Cruze sits on the new D2XX platform that will replace the Delta and Theta platforms at General Motors. A global architecture, the Cruze will be the first to get it, but it will underpin everything from next Chevrolet Volt to the Equinox and could be responsible for 2.5 million units by 2018. The next Cruze is expected to begin production in GM’s Lordstown, Ohio plant in the third quarter of 2014.

Kia Tries Yet Again To Prove That Compact Sedans Are Its Forte

2014 Kia Forte

For those keeping track, the introduction of the 2014 Kia Forte sedan marks the second time in five years that Kia has completely redesigned its compact sedan offering. Put another way, car shoppers have now had three entirely different options in this category from Kia – the unloved Spectra along with two generations of the Forte – in the same period of time that Toyota has been building the current Corolla.

If nothing else, it’s clear that Kia is committed to making as big of a dent in the compact class as possible. That said, none of Kia’s entries have come close to challenging the dominance of the aforementioned Corolla, Honda Civic or Volkswagen Jetta, domestic offerings like the Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze, or even the Hyundai Elantra, its slightly older and more subdued Korean sibling, in the race for market share.

We spent a day driving the new 2014 Forte Sedan through the wide open spaces separating the copper mines of central Arizona to find out if Kia’s latest offering has what it takes to play in the compact car Big Leagues.

Report: 2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel destined for Chicago debut

By Steven J. Ewing

Chevrolet Cruze Eco

It’s been a little over a year and a half since General Motors first confirmed plans to offer a diesel-powered Chevrolet Cruze here in the United States, and we’ve now learned that the oil-burning compact will debut under the lights of the Chicago Auto Show in February. According to GM Authority, the Cruze Eco-D will be introduced as part of the entire 2014 model year Cruze range, set to go on sale in the second quarter of this year.

Earlier reports have indicated that the diesel Cruze will be able to achieve fuel economy numbers in the range of 50 miles per gallon. For comparison, the similarly sized Volkswagen Jetta TDI is rated at 30/42 mpg city/highway, but as we found out in our long-term test of the 2011 model, hitting 50 mpg was a piece of cake.

Official specifications will be released at the time of the 2014 Cruze’s unveiling, though reports have stated that the sedan will be powered by a reworked version of the 2.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-four found in the Holden Cruze CDX overseas. In that application, the four-pot oil-burner produces 160 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque – increases of 20 hp and 29 lb-ft over the 2.0-liter engine used in VW’s Jetta TDI.

We’ve reached out to Chevrolet officials for confirmation but have yet to receive a response as of this writing. Stay tuned.

2013 Buick Verano Turbo 6-Speed Manual Review & Test Drive

By Malcolm Hogan

2013-buick-verano-turbo

The traditional definitive thought of a Buick continues to be redefined as new vehicles such as the all-new 2013 Buick Verano add somewhat of a sports appeal to midsized sedan package. The all-new 2013 Buick Verano, first introduced as a 2012 model, continues on its journey as an attractive entry-level luxury sedan offering up a comfortable ride and an economical yet powerful drivetrain.

I had the opportunity to spend some time in the all-new 2013 Buick Verano turbo. Enthusiasts will surely be astonished to know that my vehicle, a new option for 2013, was equipped with a 250 horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. That is a 70-horsepower jump from the base Verano’s engine, further reiterating the notion of Buick not being a lackluster antecedent vehicle. Though, having 250 horsepower and 260 ft-lbs. of torque surging around 2,000 rpm, the new 2013 Buick Verano is still a subdued vehicle with many soft edges in the handling department – something its target demographic may still appreciate.

2013-buick-verano-turbo-engine

The new 2013 Verano offers 4 different trim levels starting the base model then moving up to the Convenience Group, the Leather Group and the Premium Group. The 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder is part of the Premium Group trim, also adding sport pedals, spoiler and dual chrome-tipped exhaust.

2013-buick-verano-turbo-rear-drive

Driving the new 2013 Verano turbo 6-speed, only offered in the Premium Group trim level, fits the ideal touring sedan scenario. The 6-speed manual transmission has a bit of an indirect feel to it and long throws. The 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder is poised to manage the job of propelling the new Verano to 60 mph in just 6.6 seconds. Though, some of that oomph comes at a price of the relatively soft suspension during acceleration. Though, being a front wheel drive car with a turbocharged engine, torque steer is kept to a minimum.

2013-buick-verano-turbo-side

The body balance, unfortunately, is a bit upset with the ample 260 ft-lbs. of torque, which comes on a bit late into the rev range. I found that the Verano’s turbo powermill, has a short attention span. Basically, the midrange is where all of its athleticism is expunged. Until you hit 2,500 rpm things are a bit dull. Then, on the high end, the engine starts to meet its power-demise around 5,800 rpm all the way to its 6,500 rpm red line. In the end, the Verano Turbo 6-speed manual requires a bit of extra work from the driver to keep the engine at bay.

Possibly, the short power band could be a good thing for enthusiasts who really engulf themselves into quickly rowing through the gears often. On the other hand, this could be a bad thing for more relaxed drivers, but that is what the standard 6-speed automatic transmission option is for.

2013-buick-verano-turbo-6-speed-shifter

Buick’s character has changed over the years with a new-found contemporary styling to the exterior. Still, Buick vehicles are easily recognizable but now have a sporty flare about them that tends to blend them into the main-stream more so than ever. The 2013 Buick Verano has that appealing ‘almost-sporty’ style going for it. The exterior body panels, despite sharing many chassis components with the Chevrolet Cruze, gives the Verano its own unique character apart from the rest of Buick and GM’s line of sedans. Having standard 18-inch alloy wheels shod in 235/45 Continental rubber along with the Premium Group’s rear spoiler, only add to the Verano’s exterior appeal. Not to mention, the 18-inchers aid in the ride quality, what is otherwise a soft suspension that absorbs most small imperfections in the road.

2013-buick-verano-turbo--dashboard

Inside of the new 2013 Buick Verano is a familiar interior layout, characteristic of other midsized sedans from GM. Though, the Verano takes a slightly different approach with is gauge cluster and center LCD touch-screen, much of which is unique to Buick. Button layout is good with many soft-touch areas and good fit and finish. Much of the instrument panel and layout of the interior can be somewhat of a mixed bag when you find wood trim, aluminum sport pedals and about 3 other color variations throughout. It is a good contrast but does not really help explain the Verano’s character, at least from the inside of the car.

2013-buick-verano-turbo-reart-seats

The front seating positions are excellent and the soft leather seats are somewhat supportive. Rear seating is a bit short on legroom but has a good height for passengers who may be 6-feet tall. Anything over may not want to ride in the back.

At the heart of the new 2013 Buick Verano, selecting the Premium Group with is turbocharged engine is surely the ticket to having a complete package. The standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with 180 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque, leaves the Verano somewhat incomplete. I can say with a certainty that the 2.0-liter Turbo engine makes the Verano a seriously attractive package for the mild enthusiast. Not to mention, gas misers will be happy to know that the turbo 4 has a matching EPA estimated 21 mpg city to that of the 2.4-liter engine. Highway mileage is 30mpg highway in the turbo-4 and 32 mpg highway in the 2.4-liter. Still, that is only a slight difference, but you must consider the additional 70 horsepower and 89 pound-feet of torque. That alone is a deal maker for the lighthearted enthusiast.

Pricing on the 2013 Buick Verano is kept competitive when pitted against other midsized sedans in an entry-level luxury class. A base Verano can be had for $23,080 plus destination charge while my loaded up Verano Turbo Premium Group 6-speed manual carries an as-tested price of $31,685 including an $885 destination charge. The options included on my 2013 Verano Turbo included a power sunroof and upgraded audio system with navigation, in addition to the Premium Group’s add-ons featuring the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine.

Official: Chevrolet introducing "Find New Roads" global tagline

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Between the global success of the Chevrolet Cruze and the poorly received “Chevy Runs Deep” tagline, Chevrolet will be aligning all of its marketing behind a new global campaign called “Find New Roads.” Looking at the big picture, Chevrolet says this new tagline will be used to create “one global vision” as it prepares to launch 20 new models this year worldwide, and the US market will be the first to see the new campaign sometime during the first quarter of this year.

More importantly, Chevy says that this tagline will be a crucial element in developing new products and technologies. We’ll wait to see if this means the US will be seeing more global products like we saw with the introduction of Ford’s One Ford plan, but Chevy’s spokesperson Christi Vazquez told us, “We have had success with global products like the Cruze and Sonic/Aveo and will continue to develop products with global markets in mind.”

Read more about the new tagline in the press release posted after the jump.
