Video: Chrysler 100 hatchback caught cruising around Santa Monica

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

A coming hatchback said to be called the Chrysler 100 has been caught on video traipsing around Santa Monica by Autoblog reader Zach Dillman. Still wearing the scrapyard assemblage of Alfa Romeo Giulietta body panels as it was when spy photographers began capturing it last summer, its arrival date is still a question mark: some outlets have reported that it will go on sale this year, others have said it won’t be in showrooms until 2016.

In fact, quite a few questions remain. Based on Fiat’s Compact US Wide (CUSW) platform that supports the Dodge Dart and expected to be about the same size, the 100 is thought to be a small premium hatchback that will be priced above the Dart and below the Chrysler 200, with the idea that it can challenge the Ford Focus and Hyunda Elantra at the value end and the Buick Verano and Acura ILX at the premium end. Word is that there will be no sedan version.

It looks like there’ll be plenty of gewgaws inside, with buttons for Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning and a button to toggle the traction control.

Some rumors say the 100 will only get four-cylinder engines, other rumors suggest it could get a V6 to justify the premium aspirations and the price bump over the Dart, and an “E85 Only!” sticker spotted in one of the mules last summer has other rumormongers wondering if it will get a ethanol-capable version of a new powerplant that isn’t the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. It looks like there will be paddleshifters for getting through the gears, and front-wheel drive is the easy bet, all-wheel drive the long-shot shocker.

At the end of the video, a second mule gets spotted in Santa Monica, this being one of a legion of jacked-up Franken-Giulietta mules that’s been seen around the country for a while now. It could be either a new Jeep Liberty mule or a replacement for the Compass/Patriot. See for yourself in the videos below.

Acura’s current range-topping sedan, the RL, is now end of life. Critics would say it’s been end of life for some time, since sales of Acura’s premium sedan have been in the bottom ten each month for quite a while. It’s not hard to see why, either: the RL’s styling is dated, and its technology (once the hallmark of Acura) isn’t exactly class-leading.

On March 15, Acura will begin delivering its new flagship sedan, the RLX, and it’s betting that content and technology will lure buyers back to the brand. Front-wheel drive models (which benefit from Acura’s Precision All-Wheel Steer to aid handling) will hit dealer showrooms first, with a more-powerful hybrid variant debuting around mid-year. The hybrid will debut Acura’s Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, and it has the potential to be revolutionary.

Front-drive RLX models will use an all-new 3.5-liter V-6, which gains technologies like direct fuel injection and Variable Cylinder Management for optimum fuel economy. A six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode (and the obligatory paddle shifters) is the only choice of transmission. While performance data is pending, Acura says the combination will deliver 24 mpg combined, 20 mpg city and 31 mpg highway.

Expect to see plenty of standard or available technology, too, including the latest version of AcuraLink, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning and a choice of high-end audio systems. There’s even an adaptive cruise control that features a low-speed follow function for stop and go driving in traffic.

Base front-drive RLX models will be priced at $48,450, while adding the voice-guided navigation system will raise the price to $50,950. Add the Technology Package (which also includes features like heated and ventilated front seats), and the price climbs to $54,450, while choosing the 14-speak Krell Audio Package variant bumps the sticker to $56,950. If you want it all and then some, the RLX with Advance Package is priced at $60,450, though none of the prices shown here include the mandatory $895 destination fee.

If you want to test drive the RLX, dealers will have demo cars starting next month as part of Acura’s “Destination RLX” event.

Official: Acura RLX pricing and launch plan detailed

By Michael Harley

Acura has released pricing for its upcoming flagship, the RLX, at the Detroit Auto Show this week. Powered by an all-new direct-injected 3.5-liter V6 rated at 310 horsepower, the front-wheel-drive sedan replaces the outgoing RL model (2011’s worst-selling car of the year) as the automaker’s new flagship.

In addition to boasting the most spacious passenger cabin in its mid-luxury class, the new range-topping Acura features the automaker’s first-ever application of Precision All-Wheel Steer and Jewel Eye LED headlamps. Standard equipment includes Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Warning, with Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow, and Blind Spot Information (BSI) system trim and option specific.

The four-door will initially be sold in five grades (prices exclude a destination charge of $895):

  • RLX – $48,450
  • RLX with Navigation – $50,950
  • RLX with Technology Package – $54,450
  • RLX with Krell Audio Package – $56,950
  • RLX with Advance Package – $60,450

While the new model doesn’t officially go on sale until mid-March, to provide potential customers “with the opportunity to experience the numerous new technologies,” Acura will preview its sedan at dealers during a “Destination RLX” program beginning in February.

As previously mentioned, an even more powerful version of the RLX, equipped with Acura’s new Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (Sport Hybrid SH-AWD) and a 370-hp powerplant, will debut later this year.

Infiniti Reveals All-New Q50 (G37-Replacement) at 2013 North American International Auto Show

By Darryl

Looking past Infiniti’s somewhat controversial model name change debacle, it has become an easier change to swallow today as they reveal the stunning all-new 2014 Infiniti Q50 at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show (North American International Auto Show) today.

We already captured a glimpse at the new look of the Q50, the G37’s successor, from leaked photos courtesy of Infiniti’s Canadian counterparts. Featuring Infiniti’s new design language, the all-new Q50 sedan takes on a bold approach with sleek body lines emphasizing the “S” curves found in recent Infiniti concepts.

The new 2014 Infiniti Q50 will be offer two engine choices, a 3.7-liter V6 and a new 3.5-liter V6 hybrid. Other powertrains will be launched as part of a global market rollout. Hopefully we will expect to see some performance variants introduced at one point of time to expand on the IPL (Infiniti Performance Line).

The new Infiniti Q50 not only features distinctive design, but it will offer more individual space and customizable digital environments through dual LCD touch-screens and custom apps. Direct Adaptive Steering and Active Lane Control will join a barrage of other safety advancements allowing Infiniti to still pioneer their active safety blanket.

We welcome you to hit up the full press release and photos of the new 2014 Infiniti Q50, which will go on sale in North America in Summer 2013.

2014 INFINITI Q50 SPORTS SEDAN UNLEASHES INSPIRED PERFORMANCE AND HOSPITALITY
  • All-new model sets the fresh design, performance and technology direction for new generation of Infiniti vehicles and brand
  • Choice of powertrains for United States launch includes 3.7-liter V6 and 3.5-liter Hybrid; other powertrains to be added as part of global market launch rollout

Building on Infiniti’s legendary sports sedan design, performance and technology leadership, the all-new 2014 Infiniti Q50 is designed to create a new, distinct level of customer engagement when it launches in the North American market in summer 2013. The Q50 rollout will be followed by other Infiniti global markets later in the year.Said Infiniti President Johan de Nysschen: “This exciting new Infiniti Q50 stretches the boundaries of what a sports sedan can be, propelling Infiniti in a bold new direction.”A New Dimension in Dynamic Design
While Infiniti sports sedans have always been noted for their outstanding proportions and presence, the new Infiniti Q50 adds a new dimension of premium style. Its strong first impression is anchored by the smooth yet dynamic character line arising from its “double arch” grille. It energetically flows through the bodyside like a wave and merges with the rear end, creating a highly fluid and intriguing profile and fully illustrating the Infiniti Q50′s dynamic and athletic stance.”The Infiniti Q50 reflects the direct influence of the Infiniti concepts known as the ‘Infiniti Trilogy’, particularly Essence, while honoring the iconic design dynamics of earlier Infiniti sports sedans. The new Q50′s athletic and tightened appearance blends its lower and wider proportions with enhanced interior roominess to stunning effect inside and out,” said Shiro Nakamura, senior vice president and chief creative officer.Signature Infiniti exterior design features include the “double arch” grille, dynamic arch roofline and Crescent-cut C-pillar. The front end is decidedly aggressive, with a sport front fascia offered on the Q50 sport models. The new grille’s threedimensional, textural quality is provided by elaborate detailing of the waved mesh pattern surface and chrome surround, while the distinctive LED headlights and marker lights’ sharp lines suggest an almost human look.

The lean, robust body sides are designed to anchor the performance stance with a strong, solid “bone” and arched roofline that flows to the Crescent C-pillars that are similar to those that originally appeared on the Essence Concept. In the rear, the side character lines smoothly merge with the shape of the rear LED combination lights. The familiar rear double-arch trunk line completes the strong, unforgettable view from behind. Heated outside mirrors with integrated LED turn signals are standard, while a power sliding and tilting glass sunroof is optionally available.

Other exterior refinements include new door architecture with narrower, roll-formed A- and B-pillar sashes that provide improved ingress and egress, as well as a more open cabin environment. A new color palette has been specially selected to accent the Q50 contours and sculpted surfaces and includes a range of eight premium colors.

The new body design also offers enhanced airflow over both the upper and lower body portions, resulting in a coefficient of drag of just 0.26. The Q50 also features zero front and rear lift.

“Moving forward, we want all Infiniti vehicles to reflect an energetic force rooted in nature, such as the shape of a dynamic wave,” said Nakamura. “The Q50′s enhanced sense of three-dimensionality gives it a look of strength and agility – a look that is highly personal, seductive and slightly mysterious.”

Performance With a Personal Touch
Throughout the Infiniti Q50′s development, compromise was never an option. No compromise on innovation, design or performance targets, allowing the development teams to stretch the boundaries of what a sports sedan can be.

“The new Q50 amplifies every driver’s performance preference and enjoyment behind the wheel. We have one of the fastest accelerating hybrid engines, which also happens to be projected as one of the most fuel-efficient. We have advanced performance and safety technologies that can see and react before the driver can. And, we have the world’s first quick and precise Direct Adaptive Steering technology,” said de Nysschen.

At launch in North America, two advanced powertrains will be available, followed by additional engine options in other global markets later in the year. The Q50′s refined 3.7-liter aluminum-alloy DOHC 24-valve V6 is rated at 328 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque and features Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS) and Variable Valve Event & Lift (VVEL®).

The available hybrid powertrain features the Infiniti Direct Response Hybrid™system with Intelligent Dual Clutch Control. It combines a 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC aluminum-alloy V6 and compact laminated lithium-ion battery design with an innovative one-motor/two-clutch motor control. The system’s V6 is rated at 296 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque, while the advanced 50 kW electric motor is rated at 67 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid system net power is 354 horsepower, providing strong acceleration and lean fuel economy.

“True to the Infiniti DNA, our hybrid powertrains put performance first, without compromising fuel efficiency. It takes full advantage of the electric motor’s instant torque for exceptional acceleration and, in combination with the 3.5-liter V6, provides a sporty driving feel under all driving conditions. We have targeted the best balance of performance and fuel economy and hit it dead center,” said de Nysschen.

Both Q50 powertrains are matched with an advanced 7-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with manual shift mode and available steering column-mounted magnesium paddle shifters. The Q50 is available in rear-wheel drive and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive with both powertrains.

Precise handling is provided by the 4-wheel independent multi-link suspension. The front is a single pivot double-wishbone design, while the revised rear design utilizes a multi-link design with coil springs and Dual Flow Path® shock absorbers, with increased camber stiffness and improved ride comfort. The suspension features extensive use of lightweight aluminum components, along with front and rear stabilizer bars. A sport-tuned suspension is available with Sport models. Also supporting the enhanced handling is an improvement in front body stiffness (versus the previous generation).

The Q50 rides on 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with machine-finished surface with 225/55R17 all-season run-flat tires. Also available are 19-inch aluminum-alloy sport wheels with 245/40R19 run-flat all-season or summer tires. Confident braking is provided by 4-wheel power-assisted vented disc brakes with 4-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution and Brake Assist. Also available are sport brakes with upgraded rotors, 4-piston front calipers and 2-piston rear. Steering is provided by a power-assisted vehicle-speed-sensitive rack-andpinion system.

The new Q50 also features available Infiniti Direct Adaptive Steering technology, a world’s first production vehicle design. The system allows independent control of the Q50′s tire angle and steering inputs, transmitting the driver’s intentions to the wheels faster than a mechanical system.

This increases the direct driving performance feel by quickly and intelligently communicating road surface feedback to the driver. Four different steering settings are offered, allowing customization by driver preference or road conditions. This world’s first technology provides the flexibility for the driver to change both steering effort and the steering gear ratio. A backup mechanical steering system is provided with models utilizing the new Direct Adaptive Steering technology.

Also offered is another world’s first, Active Lane Control, which uses a camera-based straight-line stability system to further enhance on-center driving capability and improve vehicle stability. The system is included as part of the Lane Departure Prevention system, not only adjusting for unintended lane drift, but also making finer adjustments for minor road surface changes or crosswinds (as detected by the camera-based, lane marker detection system). The system goes beyond the traditional Lane Departure Prevention system, taking it a step further by not only reading the road ahead (the camera is located above the rearview mirror) for unintended lane drift but also by making small steering input angle adjustments if the Q50 undergoes minor direction changes due to road surface changes or crosswinds (as detected by the lane marker detection system). By reducing the need for steering input for the driver, the driver’s effort may be reduced.

“The beauty of these advanced systems is to allow a more personal driving experience, with more input when desired and less intrusion of road imperfections in the steering wheel,” said de Nysschen. “These are just the start of a range of future technologies that are becoming a point of differentiation for our Infiniti customers.”

In fine-tuning the Infiniti Q50′s exceptional performance standards, Infiniti’s partnership with Red Bull Racing enabled three-time Formula One World Driver’s Champion Sebastian Vettel and the team’s Test & Reserve driver Sebastien Buemi to provide an extra dimension to its development. With the goal of making the new model the most dynamic and exciting sports sedan on the market, Vettel provided input on the Q50′s performance and handling at Infiniti’s Tochigi facility in Japan.

Buemi tested at Nurburgring – one of the toughest proving grounds in the world – pushing prototypes to the limits to help produce a chassis with outstanding handling characteristics.

Infiniti recently announced that from 2013 it will be Title Partner and Technical Partner to ‘Infiniti Red Bull Racing.’ This deep collaboration will lead to joint technical projects for mutual benefits on the track and the road.

“Having the opportunity to receive feedback on chassis development from two world class drivers is priceless,” said de Nysschen. “Our partnership as ‘Infiniti Red Bull Racing’ is an extensive one. We are working together to identify a number of areas for technical collaboration and to apply the benefits of partnering with the Formula One World Champions to our own people, processes and technology.”

Another way that the new Infiniti Q50 raises the performance standards in class is the high degree of available personalization, which is made possible with the new fully customizable digital environment. The system works with the vehicle’s advanced i-Keys to recognize the vehicle settings for up to four different drivers.

Offering a sense of “my car knows me,” the i-Key can recognize each driver and automatically engage pre-set preferences for driving position, heating and cooling, audio, navigation and telematics. For example, up to 96 optional settings in are offered in the custom mode alone. Easy setting or changing of settings is accessed through the innovative dual touch-screen displays.

In addition, by using the drive mode selector located on the center console, engine, transmission, handling and steering adjustments can be instantly tuned, for example, for sport or touring settings.

Modern Luxury Meets Meticulous Craftsmanship
Matching the inspired Infiniti Q50 design and performance is an interior created to the same extraordinary standards. The interior environment offers a powerful blend of three-dimensional textures, highest craftsmanship and premium quality, combining modern luxury and user-focused advanced technology.

“An interior is a confluence of thousands of parts and many materials, including leathers, fabrics, metals and glass. The harmony with each element is an important part of the Q50′s warmth and high quality feel,” Nakamura explained. “Our designers approached the integration of every element in the interior in terms of not just function but also of stimulation of the senses – color, touch, texture, finish and beauty – creating an environment that is both intuitive and indulgent.”

The Q50 interior is also designed as an invitation to drive – to celebrate the elation of driving that is often lost in the modern world. As such, special attention was paid to the driver position, offering a generous range of customizable adjustments within a cosseting yet comfortable cockpit. The Q50′s instrument panel honors Infiniti’s “double wave” design tradition, while updated with a new asymmetrical flow from the top of the center cluster to the wide center console. Access to all key operations and controls is designed so that the driver does not need to change driving posture, including use of hard switches, touch panels and drive mode selector controller.

The front and rear seats are a new ergonomic design, developed to help distribute body pressure across a wider range of the upper seating surface. When sitting, the pressure load on the backbone is about 1.4 times greater than while standing. The bending moments that become a factor of load are reduced by the new seat design, with the additional support for the pelvis and the self-weight of the chest.

The roomy interior space offers ample front and rear head room, ample rear knee room enhanced by the new, thin front seatback design, and greater front seat slide and lift adjustability. Front and rear seat hip points have also been adjusted for greater comfort. The rear seat foot room is also expanded by moving the B-pillar forward nearly an inch (versus traditional designs), making it easier to enter and exit. Effective luggage space is expected to be the best in the segment at 18.0 cubic feet with the 3.7-liter V6 and 14.1 cubic feet with the hybrid powertrain.

The Infiniti Q50 features a choice of interior fabrics and colors, including available leather-appointed seating surfaces. Three interior colors are offered: Wheat, Graphite and Stone.

Finishing off the elegant interior is a combination of “Kacchu” aluminum inspired by traditional Samurai armaments and genuine maple wood trim, which is representative of the 16th century Urushi painting technique.

“Quality is another Infiniti Q50 strong point,” added Nakamura. “Our designer’s passion, obsession with detail and devotion to craftsmanship and continuous improvements ensure we are producing a truly premium product of the best quality.”

The Q50′s quiet cabin is augmented by standard Active Noise Control, with cancelling of intrusive low frequency noise from four door-mounted speakers, allowing easy conversation with passengers. Premium audio systems include an available nextgeneration Studio on Wheels by Bose® audio system with a new instrument panel 3-speaker array (14 speakers total throughout the cabin) and Advanced Staging Technology®. SiriusXM Satellite Radio (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately) and High Definition (HD) radio are standard.

Other features include Dual-Zone Automatic Temperature Control, Bluetooth® Handsfree Phone System, RearView Monitor and available Advanced Climate Control System (ACCS) with Plasmacluster® air purifier and Around View® Monitor with Moving Object Detection.

Infiniti Connected Technologies
Building on Infiniti’s unique approach to making owners’ lives easier, which includes the Infiniti Personal Assistant program with 24-hour access to a live team of professional assistants, the new Infiniti InTouch™ telematics system brings the future of in-car connectivity to the Q50 interior today. Unlike conventional interfaces, the Q50 has not one but two touch capacitive screens with intuitive hand gesture screen operation to easily connect drivers to their lives outside the car.

“We have new technologies that embrace the way people live today – seamless connectivity and personalization everywhere they go, including while in their cars, with an optimized human machine interface for ease of use,” said de Nysschen.

Along with the large dual screens, the Infiniti InTouch™ system is designed to effortlessly synchronize car and driver. Content and functions directed to the upper screen includes the most frequently used applications, such as navigation maps. Other content is directed to the lower display screen.

The two screens work together so that, for example, the navigation map can be viewed on the top screen while setting destinations or finding points-of-interest can be done on the lower screen. A limited number of critical functions, such as heating and cooling, are operated by hard switches. Content can be customized using easy-to-understand menus. A selection of vehicle-centric apps will be pre-loaded into the system. Owners will also be able to download, update and synch personal apps through their smartphones and USB drives. Additional details on the system’s operation will be available at a later date.

Safety Shield Technologies
The final area of segment leadership for the new Infiniti Q50 is its advanced safety systems. Building on the long list of safety and security technologies already found in other Infiniti models, the Infiniti Q50 offers available Intelligent Cruise Control with Full Speed Range, predictive Forward Collision Warning (world’s first technology), Forward Emergency Braking, Distance Control Assist, Blind Spot Intervention, Backup Collision Intervention®, Lane Departure Prevention and Active Lane Control.

Coming Soon
The all-new 2014 Infiniti Q50 will be initially offered in the United States and Canada beginning in summer 2013. At launch, two powertrains – the 3.7-liter V6 and 3.5-liter Hybrid – will be available, each in a choice of rear-wheel drive or Intelligent All- Wheel Drive and in a selection of trim levels, including Sport models.

The Q50 will roll out in other global Infiniti markets beginning in summer 2013 and will include additional powertrain offerings adapted to respective market needs.

“The new Infiniti Q50 is a true game changer in the sports sedan segment,” said de Nysschen. “With its cutting-edge performance, design and technology, it breaks away from ordinary – just like the Infiniti brand.”

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit AWD Review & Test Drive

By Harvey Schwartz

‘BLINGING TO THE TOP’

If you like to reach your favorite off-road destination in a tuxedo, then check out the new Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit AWD sport utility vehicle.  Besides Jeep’s fabled off-road prowess, this new Grand Cherokee is dressed to the nines outside and inside with the latest luxury, convenience, safety, connectivity and infotainment systems.

My test 2013 Cherokee Overland Summit came fully loaded.  New standard equipment includes front park assist, power folding outside heated/self-dimming mirrors and headlight washers.  My Overland Summit came equipped with the new optional black colored Nappa leather seats with saddle accent stitching on the seats and the black Berber floor mats.  The dashboard upper lid is also covered with leather featuring the single stitching saddle thread.  The front bucket seats feature 8-way power adjustments with lumbar support, perforated inserts for heating and cooling functions.  More about the sumptuous interior later as the exterior styling of the Overland Summit gets new bling.

Sporting a unique front appearance with a fully chromed grille, Bi-Xenon headlamps, dual chromed tow hooks, chrome front skid plate and chrome fog lamp bezels.  From the side are steeply raked windshield pillars, flared fenders, chrome pull-out door handles, a full-perimeter chrome strip around the greenhouse, a thick chrome strip running through both doors, black contrasted lower bodykit, and aluminum roof rack rails.  Out the rear is a roof-mounted spoiler, wrap-around lamp clusters with a thick chrome strip giving it a solid appearance.  The power liftgate features flipper glass for easy loading/unloading, a chrome-surround step bumper, and a single, 31/2 in. polished stainless steel exhaust tip.  In the cargo area are four chrome slats and four chrome tie-downs plus a cargo net.

On the inside the Overland Summit features unique Black Olive burl wood trim blended into the instrument panel.  The distinctive polished trim wraps into the upper panels of both the front and rear doors surrounding passengers with the highest levels of craftsmanship.  The wood trim is also used on the standard, leather-wrapped, power tilting/telescoping/heated/beefy steering wheel.  The center stack, center console and air-vents are covered in chrome and satin aluminum giving the interior a further infusion of luxury.  The stick shifter is of course, also covered in leather with the top part showing a black with white lettering Jeep signature.  More interior refinements include heated second-row seats with air-vents out the end of the center console, two-driver memory settings for seats, steering wheel and side mirrors, rear pull-down center armrest with dual cupholders, electronic, dual-zone A/C system, power windows/door locks with front express up/down, dual-pane one-touch panoramic sunroof with power sunshade, electronic vehicle information center located between the rallye style gauges, Uconnect 730 N CD/DVD/MP3/HDD/NAV GPS navigation, 9-amplified speakers with subwoofer, Sirius satellite radio, 6.5 in. touch screen display, 506-watt amp, storage pockets in each door, a deep lighted glove box, grab handles above each door, dual map lights, dual lighted vanity mirrors, cargo area light, rain-sensing wipers/washers, rear wiper/washer, two-tiered storage box and padded armrest and thick cut-pile carpeting.

Also standard on the Overland Summit is the Advanced Warning System and Adaptive Cruise Control group which consist of Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Blind Sport Monitoring and Rear Cross-path detection systems.  Am I missing anything?  I don’t think that any other premium sport utility vehicle comes with more luxury, convenience, and new high-tech safety features.  What really sets the new 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit a part from any other SUV in the segment is Jeep’s fabled off-road ability.

Let’s start with the power and torque to easily cruise on the highway and bust through the toughest off-road trails.  You have a choice of the award-winning 3.6 liter VVT all-aluminum, DOHC Pentastar V6 engine that generates 290 hp at 6,400 rpm and 260 lb.ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm.  Excellent fuel mileage specs of 16/city and 23mpg/highway.  The 5.7 liter V8 engine with fuel-saver technology delivers 360 hp and 290 lb.ft. of torque at 4,250 rpm.  The VVT system on both engines delivers performance, towing capability and fuel efficiency.  4X4 models achieve 13 mpg/city and 20mpg/highway.  With the V8 engine fuel-saver technology seamlessly alternates between smooth high-fuel economy four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V8 mode when more power is requested.  This engine is mated to a six-speed automatic and the 3.6 liter V6 engine is mated to a smooth-shifting five-speed automatic.  Both transmissions feature Autostick which allows you to hold each gear and make the changes, up or down, when you want it.  The V6 engine offers a trailer-tow capability of up to 5,000 lbs. and up to 7,400 lbs. with the 5.7 liter V8 engine.  That’s plenty of towing power from either engine.  My test Grand Cherokee Overland Summit 4X4 had the V6 engine that provided me with plenty of power and towing capability for all of my needs.

Besides the excellent power and torque ratings allowing you to easily cruise the highways and tough off-road trails with a trailer/boat or any type of active lifestyle accessories, the combination of Grand Cherokee’s Quadra-Lift air suspension system and the Jeep Selec-Terrain traction control system lets you choose the 4X4 setting for the optimum experience on all terrains-also giving you a ‘cloud-like’ air-ride on the road.  My test Cherokee Overland Summit had both systems for the optimum off-road capability.  Selec-Terrain electronically coordinates up to 12 different powertrain, braking and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shift, transfer case, traction control and electronic stability control (ESC).  The Jeep Selec-Terrain’s control dial allows you to choose from five driving conditions in order to achieve the best 4X4 performance.  Torque management to the drive wheels for maximum grip is achieved through the following settings: Sand/Mud-traction control and Quadra-Lift operates with sensitive response to wheel spin and torque is tuned for optimal performance; Sport-provides enhanced  on-road ‘fun-to-drive capability; Auto-automatically adapts to any on-or-off-road situation; Snow-vehicle traction control adjusts for ultimate performance over snow-covered roads; Rock-Quadra-Lift air suspension system raises to maximum height (10.7 in.) and the transfer case, differentials and throttle coordinate to provide low-speed control.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee also offers the Quadra Lift air suspension system, which features five height settings for optimum ride performance: Normal Ride Height (NRH): 8.1 in. of clearance offers improved fuel economy and improved aerodynamics during on-road driving; Off-road 1-Lifts the vehicle an additional 1.3 in. for added height in clearing obstacles (9.4 in.); Off-road 2-Delivers legendary Jeep off-road capability and provides an additional 2.6 in. of height for 10.7 in. of ground clearance; Park Mode- Lowers the vehicle 1.5 in. from the NRH for easy ingress/egress and roof-rack loading, NRH and Park mode are driver selectable, giving you control over vehicle ride height; Aero Mode-Lowers the vehicle .6 in. from NRH.  Aero mode is controlled by vehicle speed and adjusts for optimal performance and fuel economy.

Quadra-Lift adds up to 4.1 in. of lift span that is supported by four-corner air springs that provide a cushioned, premium ride.  Quadra-Lift operates automatically, or may be controlled manually via console controls.  With the front airdam removed, and the available Quadra-Lift air suspension system, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit 4X4 features a 34.3-degree approach angle, a 29.3-degree departure angle and a 23.1-degree Breakover angle.

Front and rear independent suspension systems feature isolated front and rear suspension cradles.  Variable rate rear springs deliver uncompromised on-road handling and comfort that complements the vehicle’s off-road prowess.  The rear suspension allows the spare tire to be stored inside the vehicle.

The Quadra Trac II two-speed transfer case actively manages torque and uses input from a variety of sensors in order to determine tire slip at the earliest possible moment and take corrective action.  The system uses Throttle Anticipate to sense quick movement in the throttle from a stop and maximizes traction before slippage occurs.  When tire slippage is detected, as much as 100% of available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction.

The standard electro-hydraulic power rack & pinion steering system in the V6 model gives excellent feel for the road, is smooth and reacts to your inputs immediately.  It also increases fuel efficiency by 1mpg.  The V8 model uses the standard hydraulic power rack & pinion system.

Quickly stopping the new Grand Cherokee Overland Summit down from speed are large, 4-wheel steel disc brakes.  Up front are 12.9 in. vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers.  The rear features 12.6 in. solid discs clamped with single-piston calipers.  Standard ABS, BA, Traction Control and ESC all work together to keep you in control when braking on slick pavement or when off-road.  The new 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit rides on huge 20X8 in. aluminum alloy wheels wrapped with Goodyear 265/50R20 in. Fortera HL all-season radial tires for a smooth, quiet ride with excellent traction.

Standard features not mentioned above includes, self-dimming rearview mirror, reading lamps in the rear, and a cargo lamp in the back.  Options not mentioned above in the Overland Summit automatic high-beam headlight control.

Standard safety features includes hill descent control, daytime running lamps, advanced multi-stage front airbags, front seat-mounted airbags, side-curtain airbags, LATCH system for child seats, Parkview rear backup camera, ParkSense rear park assist system, trailer tow group, hill start assist, trailer sway damping, security alarm , 5-3-point safety belts with front pretensioners/load limiters, front crumple zone and steel beams in each door.

The new 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Overland 4X4 gives the active lifestyle single, coupe or family exceptional luxury with Jeep’s Legendary Off-Road Capability!  It can’t get any better than this new Jeep Grand Cherokee.
