Remarks by the President on Rebuilding America Partnership in Miami, Florida

By The White House

PortMiami
Miami, Florida
1:40 P.M. EDT
THE PRESIDENT: Hello, Miami! (Applause.) It is good to be back. You know, I've been waiting for spring. I realize I just had to come down to Miami. (Laughter.) It is wonderful to be here.
We've got some outstanding representatives in Congress from this area — Joe Garcia is in the house. (Applause.) Frederica Wilson is in the house. (Applause.) And we've got Debbie Wasserman Schultz here. (Applause.) I want to thank the Mayor of Miami-Dade County, Carlos Gimenez. (Applause.) And of course, it’s good to see all of you. And I want to thank the gentlemen who just gave me a amazing tour of the PortMiami Tunnel.
LITTLE GIRL: Yea!
THE PRESIDENT: What are you yelling about? Hey, sweetie. (Applause.)
WOMAN: She came just to see you!
THE PRESIDENT: Okay, well, hello. (Laughter.) She’s going to be a politician because I could hear her without a mic from far away. (Laughter.)
Now, before we get started, I've got to get into a sticky subject right off the bat. I know you guys aren’t happy with my Chicago Bulls.
AUDIENCE: Booo —
THE PRESIDENT: But I just want you to know the Heat are going to be just fine. They’re going to be okay. (Applause.) They are playing basketball the right way. The Hurricanes — they had a great season — no, no, they deserve a big round of applause. (Applause.) Tonight you’ve got Florida and Florida Gulf Coast going at it. (Applause.) One of them will go to the Elite Eight. So, let’s face it, Florida is the center of basketball right now. (Applause.)
But I’m not here to talk about hoops. I’m here to talk about one of the plans that I put forward in my State of the Union address — a plan to put people to work rebuilding America.
I’ve come to PortMiami today because there are few more important things we can do to create jobs right now and strengthen our economy over the long haul than rebuilding the infrastructure that powers our businesses and our economy — our roads, our bridges, our schools, and our ports just like this one.
As President, my top priority is to make sure we are doing everything we can to reignite the true engine of our economic growth — and that is a rising, thriving middle class. A growing economy that creates good, middle-class jobs – that’s got to be our true North. That's what has to guide our efforts every single day. And to do that, we should be asking ourselves three questions every single day: Number one, how do we make America a magnet for …read more

Dysfunctional Government: Distrust And Gridlock

By Allan Erickson

Congress Dysfunctional government: distrust And gridlock

Watching the round-table discussion on ABC Sunday mornings is instructive.  George Will always provides unique insight couched in history.  He made the essential point recently that the two political parties are so far apart that any compromise on financial issues appears unlikely. Along with Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin on the panel, Will’s input was routinely constructive, oriented to problem-solving, never going so low as to employ personal attack.

Others, like Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and Paul Krugman, agreed with Will: there is a tremendous trust deficit responsible for gridlock.

Conservatives in Congress do not trust this President, and for good reason.  It is very difficult, if impossible, to work with someone who smiles reassuringly in private, then eviscerates in public.

I find it amusing people like Wasserman-Schultz and Krugman decry distrust and gridlock.  They call for restoring trust.  And in the very next breath, they attack conservatives as liars and obstructionists.  Apparently, they didn’t learn everything they need to know in kindergarten.

Wasserman-Schultz never missed a chance to demonize Republicans and the Tea Party, her central reason for existence it appears.  Krugman called Jeb Bush a liar and dolt and condemned anyone embracing Reaganomics.  Without missing a beat, both of these people also called for a new civility and real debate!  Beholding this display of dysfunction only served to buttress Will’s point: an intractable Left prefers demonization, which accounts largely for the gridlock. Promoting failure is successful for them, so why change?

However, it appears the Poser in the White House is beginning to employ a little of Reagan’s wisdom reaching out to the other side of the aisle, a “hopeful” sign say some Republicans.  It won’t work.  You cannot make a dove from a strutting peacock.

Recently, we have seen the Poser attack Republicans for sequestration cuts he created, close the White House to public visitation, and claim those cuts prevent the people access to The People’s House.  We have seen him play other games to make the ‘pain’ as severe as possible, such as suspending all college programs for military personnel and threatening massive layoffs, resulting in reduced security. Fear and demonization are and will remain the centerpiece of the Poser’s attitude.

But to appear like a real leader, the Poser then took Senators to dinner in a phony show of willing conciliation.  Have we forgotten this man has hammered conservatives most of his adult life, most intensely in the last four years?  In one night, we are supposed to forget years of double-dealing, underhanded maneuvers, accusations, and vicious denunciations?

To their credit, conservatives appear willing to attempt, once again, to work with this Alinsky organizer, whose motto is ‘isolate and ridicule.’  However, they should be reminded of Reagan’s advice when dealing with a lawless adversary: “trust, but verify.”  It might also be prudent to look into drone countermeasures.

Republicans Are Content To Be The Liberals’ Lackeys And Judas Goats

By Dr. Kevin "Coach" Collins

John Boehner 3 SC Republicans are content to be the liberals’ lackeys and Judas goats

Republicans have become the Democrats’ lackeys and Judas goats, whose main job is to lead unwitting Republican voters into the liberals’ slaughter pens.  Given reports that Eric Cantor wants the Republican rank and file to see that “Government Can Be Good, Too,”  Karl Rove has announced his intention to pick our candidates; and state level Republicans have run away from any hint of changing the Electoral College vote distribution in their states, making it clear that Republicans cannot be trusted with our future.

These people are more concerned with what the New York Times and Debbie Wasserman Schultz has to say about them than the well-being of the suckers that elect them. Elected and celebrated Republicans have become indistinguishable from the nice little old church lady who uses her position as the bookkeeper to steal money from the weekly collections. When we hear these stories, our trust in them is shattered; and we are insulted on many levels. They rub our noses in the stark reality that we now have no one to speak for us. We have no champions of freedom to look to as trusted protectors.

Since we cannot personally sit next to those we send to represent us because we are busy working to support our families, we have to trust people who time and again prove themselves unworthy of our trust. The political integrity of the Republican Party has disintegrated to a point where its talk of  “compromise” with liberals is a question of how much will be taken from us, not IF something will be taken.

Republicans in the House and in state capitals–some who even hold large majorities–have adopted the mentality of a minority because Democrats have mocked and threatened them into cowering in their presence. When Democrats bark at Republicans, telling them they’ll never get the Hispanic vote unless they support erasing the border with Mexico, Republicans in Congress immediately cave and say: “Yes sir boss!”

We are already being told by the Democrat-controlled media that Chris Christie would make a great Republican candidate for president in 2016. Does anyone doubt that we will soon start hearing the same thing from Karl Rove and George Will?

Final thought: Did anyone really expect John Boehner to try to save Allen West?

Video: Did Obama Steal The Election With Hagel’s Help?

By Kris Zane

Chuck Hagel has been tapped by Obama for Secretary of Defense, which has resulted in a slew of push backs over his troubling record: criticism and lack of support for Israel; coddling of Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iran; and his almost immediate appointment after retiring as a senator to Deutsche Bank’s Americas Advisory Board, the mega bank that has been accused of funneling billions of dollars to Iran’s nuclear program.

But the most troubling aspect of Chuck Hagel is the fact that he may have stolen both of his senatorial elections.

In 1992, Hagel was CEO of Election Systems & Software, maker of computerized voting machines.

On March 15, 1995, Hagel resigned as CEO but kept millions in stock options and declared that he was going to run for the U.S. Senate in Nebraska. Although he was a virtually unknown candidate; although he ran against a former governor, Ben Nelson, who was hugely popular; and although all the polls prior to the election indicated Ben Nelson would win the election, oddly Hagel won by a landslide with 83% of the vote.

It later turned out that Hagel’s voting machines had been used in virtually all of the precincts.

When Hagel ran for reelection in 2006, his previous landslide of 83% was eclipsed by an even wider margin.

It turns out that Hagel’s former company, Election Systems & Software/Diebold now counts the votes in most elections.

And it turns out Hagel’s voting machines have been embroiled in investigations of hacking and vote-switching that continue to this day.

Did Barack Obama win the presidential elections the same way Hagel won his senatorial seat? And is this Secretary of Defense position payback for the favor?

Americans should demand to see each and every vote cast for both Chuck Hagel and Barack Obama.

Now.

Today.

Santorum Takes Up Fight Against Hagel Nomination

By Breaking News

Rick Santorum speech 4 SC Santorum takes up fight against Hagel nomination

WASHINGTON (OfficialWire) — Republican opposition to Chuck Hagel as the next defense secretary swelled from inside and outside the Senate Thursday as a former Senate colleague launched a campaign to block his nomination.

Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator who served for a decade with Hagel, said his grassroots organization, Patriot Voices, will lead a nationwide campaign to stop Hagel from succeeding Leon Panetta as head of the Pentagon.

“While I respect Sen. Hagel’s service to America, I cannot stand by and support his nomination,” Santorum said in a statement. “His anti-Israel, pro-Iran mindset makes him uniquely unqualified to serve as our Defense secretary.”

Hagel, nominated Monday by President Barack Obama, has faced criticism that he is soft on Iran and weak in his support for Israel. Pushing back in private meetings with defense officials, he has told them this week that he backs strong international sanctions against Iran and believes all options, including military action, should be on the table.

Hagel’s Own Words Are Fodder For Critics

By Breaking News

Chuck Hagel SC2 Hagel’s own words are fodder for critics

WASHINGTON (OfficialWire) — Chuck Hagel was blunt-spoken in the Senate, even when bucking fellow Republicans. Now opponents in his own party and elsewhere are using Hagel’s words against him.

The Vietnam veteran and former two-term senator from Nebraska will need to explain some of his comments and views as President Barack Obama’s choice for the next secretary of defense. A look at past remarks likely to come up during his confirmation hearing:

Hagel, who says he’s a strong supporter of Israel, stirred bad feelings by referring to pro-Israeli interests as “the Jewish lobby” and suggesting they wield undue power in Washington.

“The Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people. … I’ve always argued against some of the dumb things they do, because I don’t think it’s in the interest of Israel,” Hagel told former Mideast peace negotiator and author Aaron David Miller in a 2006 interview.

Hagel continued: “I’m not an Israeli senator. I’m a United States senator. I support Israel, but my first interest is, I take an oath of office to the Constitution of the United States, not to a president, not to a party, not to Israel.”

Hagel And The Jews

By Breaking News

Chuck Hagel SC Hagel and the Jews

A friend and admirer of Senator Hagel called the other day to ask whether we’d ever met the nominee to be secretary of defense. We expressed our regrets that we hadn’t. Our friend wanted us to know that Mr. Hagel does not dislike the Jews. We said we were delighted to hear it, but we also tried to convey that the Sun doesn’t care one way or another whether Mr. Hagel likes the Jews. His private views are not what we care about. What we care about is the policy line to which Mr. Hagel would hew were he to get a chance to run the defense department and advise the President.

We’ve written before about this question of private prejudice. Harry Truman didn’t like the Jews. He didn’t like African Americans or the Chinese or Japanese either. We know this from his private correspondence as a young man. Phew! It contains the coarsest kind of bigotry. Yet Truman became one of the great civil rights presidents and one of the greatest friends of Israel. Once lifted to high office in the Senate, where he served as both a senator and as vice president, and then in the presidency, Truman came to see things in a different light and to surmount his biases.

So our concerns in respect of Senator Hagel aren’t about his views on the Jews. And we appreciate the fact that he served as an enlisted man in Vietnam, an experience we tend to credit (although neither is it dispositive). But we’ve been covering his antics for years, and where we’ve come out is that he’s just over his head in terms of policy. So he’s emerged as a shill for Israel’s most implacable foes. It doesn’t take a genius to comprehend what the mullahs in Iran are going to make of this nomination.

It’s not that Israel is our only test. We’ve been writing editorials in support of Congressman Ron Paul’s Liberty Campaign. We didn’t make an endorsement. But we’ve been defending him, even though he has a record that has convinced many that he has a personal animus in respect of Israel. We see a big difference between, say, Dr. Paul and Mr. Hagel. Dr. Paul has, over more than the 35 years that we’ve covered him, exhibited a commitment to certain libertarian, constitutional principles, most of which we share and all of which we respect.

By what deep principles is Senator Hagel guided in his long years of hanging back from anything that could be construed as helpful to the Jewish state or unhelpful to her enemies? He’s made no life’s work of sound money. He’s made no life’s work of constitutional fundamentals. We can’t think of a single over-riding principle in his career, save for an abiding sneer at Israel, in which he seems to take a certain mischievous glee. Maybe we’re missing something that will emerge during the confirmation process, but based on the record so far, we’d be surprised.

President’s Pick Ill-Equipped?

By Breaking News

Chuck Hagel SC Presidents Pick Ill Equipped?

A national defense analyst and Pentagon advisor agrees with a number of GOP senators who don’t think former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel (R) is qualified to be secretary of defense.

After several weeks of speculation, President Obama has officially nominated Hagel to replace Leon Panetta, who wants to return to private life during Obama’s second term. In choosing Hagel, the president is reportedly signaling he is ready for a contentious confirmation fight, likely dominated by questions about Hagel’s stance on Israel and Iran. (Hagel to face rough going in Senate)

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) has joined other Senate Republicans — including Roger Wicker of Mississippi and newly seated Ted Cruz from Texas — in criticizing Hagel, mostly for his virulently anti-Israel and pro-Iranian foreign policy positions. Graham told CNN over the weekend that Hagel is a controversial choice, as his thinking on most issues of foreign policy is out of the mainstream. He also questions Hagel’s management experience.

Lt. Col. Bob Maginnis (USA-Ret.), now senior fellow for national security at the Family Research Council (FRC), says Hagel does not have the experience needed to run a vast and complex operation like the U.S. Department of Defense.
