Defense Secretary Hagel To Travel To Israel

By Breaking News

Chris Matthews SC Let the Left keep talking...

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says he will be traveling to Israel in a few days, his first trip to the Mideast ally since he took over at the Pentagon.

Hagel mentioned the trip during congressional testimony on Tuesday as lawmakers pressed him on whether the United States would support Israel if it launches a strike against Iran. Hagel told a House panel that such a policy decision would be made by President Barack Obama.

Chuck Hagel: Pentagon Furlough Days To Be Reduced

By The Huffington Post News Editors

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon says it’s easing the impact of automatic budget cuts on as many as 800,000 civilian employees, sharply reducing the number of unpaid furlough days they will have to take in coming months.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Thursday a new spending law lets the military services cut furlough days from 22 to 14.

Obama Friend Or Foe? McCain Charts His Course

By Breaking News

John McCain Official SC1 Obama friend or foe? McCain charts his course

WASHINGTON — Republican Sen. John McCain is a walking contradiction, antagonizing President Barack Obama over foreign policy one minute, cooperating with the Democrat the next on immigration and the budget.

So who is the real McCain?

There’s the national security expert pounding the Obama administration with words like “cover-up” and “incompetence” over the deadly assault in Libya last September, snarling about the administration’s lack of backbone on Syria and ripping into Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel over the Iraq war.

But there’s also the Arizona lawmaker reviving his past bipartisan effort on immigration by reaching out to Obama, the man who beat him for the presidency in 2008, as well as several Senate Democrats. Frustrated with the endless cycle of fiscal crises, McCain recently was part of a small group of GOP senators to talk budget at a dinner with the president.

In the first months of the year, McCain as friend or foe has given Washington whiplash. The swings seem even more pronounced as the 76-year-old lawmaker, perhaps in his last term, relishes more independence while Obama, also unencumbered electorally, pursues an ambitious second-term agenda.

Suicide bomb hits as US defense chief visits

Afghan officials say there was an explosion outside the Afghan defense ministry causing multiple casualties, as U.S. defense secretary Chuck Hagel visits the country.

Afghan police spokesman Hashmat Stanekzai says an apparent suicide attacker on a bicycle hit the main entrance to the defense ministry around 9 a.m. local time. Officials are still trying to determine the number of casualties.

Hagel was in a meeting at a coalition facility in Kabul and defense officials say he is in a safe location and unharmed. Reporters traveling with Hagel were in a briefing when they heard the explosion, and were moved to a lower floor of the same building. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

Remarks by the President Before a Cabinet Meeting

By The White House

Cabinet Room

1:08 P.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT: Well, this is my 17th meeting with my Cabinet; the first one in a second term. And, obviously, we’ve got some familiar faces, we have some new faces, we have some familiar faces in new positions. I want to make sure that I say thank you to all of you for the work that you’ve already done and the work that you’re going to be doing.

I want to welcome Jack Lew, former Chief of Staff and OMB Director, and now Secretary of the Treasury. We’re thrilled to have him in that position. I want to welcome Mr. Chuck Hagel, who’s in the position of Secretary of Defense. And to all of you, I appreciate everything that you’ve done.

Obviously, we’re going to be spending some time talking about the potential impact of the sequester on all the agencies and missions across the board. It is an area of deep concern and I think everybody knows where I stand on this issue. We are going to manage it as best we can, try to minimize the impacts on American families, but it’s not the right way for us to go about deficit reduction.

It makes sense for us to take a balanced approach that takes a long view and doesn’t reduce our commitment to things like education and basic research that will help us grow over the long term. And so I will continue to seek out partners on the other side of the aisle so that we can create the kind of balanced approach of spending cuts, revenues, entitlement reform that everybody knows is the right way to do things.

In the meantime, we’re going to do our best to make sure that our agencies have the support they need to try to make some very difficult decisions, understanding that there are going to be families and communities that are hurt, and that this will slow our growth. It will mean lower employment in the United States than otherwise would have been.

But we can manage through it, and we’re going to rely on the outstanding leadership of all these agencies to make sure that we do whatever it is that we need to get done to help America’s families.

Now, my agenda obviously is broader than just the sequester, because I laid out both in the inauguration and during the State of the Union a very robust agenda to make sure that we’re doing everything we can to grow this economy and to help families thrive and expand their opportunities. We want to make sure we’ve got a growing middle class and more ladders of opportunity into the middle class.

So in addition to talking about budget issues, we’re also going to spend some time talking about making sure that we have comprehensive immigration reform done. And I want to again thank members of Congress who on a bipartisan basis are moving forward on that …read more

Aipac 2013 Conference Arrives At Tough Time For Budgets, Bipartisanship

By The Huffington Post News Editors

WASHINGTON — A major gathering of pro-Israel activists and lobbyists that kicks off here this weekend arrives at a time of heightened budget austerity and an aggravated level of uncertainty over Israel‘s place in the bipartisan consensus in Washington.

The event, the annual conference for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, is reliably the high point for Washington amiability, a singular moment that draws together Democratic and Republican officials alike in a shared theme of improved U.S.-Israel relations.

But this year’s conference comes at a moment when bipartisan civility on the issue of Israel seems to be particularly strained, given looming budget cutbacks and the high-stakes ideological battle recently waged over the nomination of former Sen. Chuck Hagel for secretary of defense.

Statement from the President on the Confirmation of Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense

By The White House

With the bipartisan confirmation of Chuck Hagel as our next Secretary of Defense, we will have the defense secretary our nation needs and the leader our troops deserve. From the moment he volunteered for military service in Vietnam, Chuck has devoted his life to keeping America secure and our armed forces strong. An American patriot who fought and bled for our country, he understands our sacred obligations to our service members, military families and veterans.

I will be counting on Chuck’s judgment and counsel as we end the war in Afghanistan, bring our troops home, stay ready to meet the threats of our time and keep our military the finest fighting force in the world. Most of all, I am grateful to Chuck for reminding us that when it comes to our national defense, we are not Democrats or Republicans, we are Americans, and our greatest responsibility is the security of the American people.
