Hackers to offer blueprint for taking over Prius,Escape

http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2013/07/28/hackers-plan-to-offer-blueprint-for-taking-over

Two well-known computer software hackers plan to publicly release this week a veritable how-to guide for driving two widely owned automobiles haywire.

According to Reuters, Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek will release the findings — as well as related software — at the Def Con hacking convention in Las Vegas, showing how to manipulate a Toyota Prius and Ford Escape.

The research, conducted with the aid of a grant from the U.S. government, can alternately force a Prius to brake at 80 mph, veer quickly and dramatically, or accelerate, all without the driver’s prompting.

Official: Ford hiring 800 more salaried workers than originally expected

Ford US job creation infographic

Filed under:

Ford is on a roll this year, with excellent quarterly earnings and better-than-expected vehicle sales leading to 800 more job opportunities with the Blue Oval. In January, Ford announced that it wanted to hire 2,200 salaried employees, but, since then, that figure has been revised to 3,000, representing a 36-percent increase over original projections. About 1,500 of those jobs remain, 80 percent of which are technical professional positions.

“Engineers and technical professionals are in as much demand as our cars, trucks and SUVs,” says Felicia Fields, Ford Group Vice President for Human Resources. Helping to spur this job growth are increasing market share on both the West and East Coast and robust demand for the Ford Escape and F-150.

To find job candidates, Ford is reaching out to them via Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, in addition to the company’s corporate career site. The Blue Oval is also ramping up its presence on college campuses.

One of Fords goals has been to create 12,000 hourly jobs in the US by 2015, and this latest announcement does alter that goal, Ford says, which is sitting the 75-percent mark since the company hired over 6,200 hourly employees last year. Learn more in the press release below.

Hackers Reveal Nasty New Car Attacks–With Me Behind The Wheel (Video)

By Andy Greenberg, Forbes Staff

Stomping on the brakes of a 3,500-pound Ford Escape that refuses to stop–or even slow down–produces a unique feeling of anxiety. In this case it also produces a deep groaning sound, like an angry water buffalo bellowing somewhere under the SUV’s chassis. The more I pound the pedal, the louder the groan gets–along with the delighted cackling of the two hackers sitting behind me in the backseat. …read more

Monster Car Sales Fuel Stocks

By John Maxfield, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Stocks are broadly higher today on the back of impressive March auto sales and a positive development in the health care industry. With roughly an hour left in the trading session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 71 points, or 0.49%.

Fueling the generally positive sentiment on Wall Street were the sales figures from the nation’s largest automakers for the month of March. Ford reported an overall increase of 5.7% relative to the same month last year. Year to date, that figure comes in at 11%. Ford’s success was largely a function of SUV sales. While car sales declined by 0.2%, led by an 11.9% fall related to the Focus, demand for Ford’s Escape and Explorer models soared 27.6% and 32.5%, respectively.

Ken Czubay, Ford’s vice president of U.S. marketing, sales, and service, said in the company’s prepared remarks: “Customers are buying our all-new Fusion and Escape in record numbers, and we are working harder than ever to keep pace with demand for these fuel-efficient vehicles. Full-size pickup demand continues gaining momentum, outperforming the industry for the third consecutive month.”

General Motors reported equally impressive results, notching its best March sales in five years. Its performance owed largely to its Cadillac and Buick brands, sales of which were higher during the month by 50% and 37%, respectively. By comparison, the significantly larger Chevrolet division was roughly even compared with the same month last year.

According to the company’s prepared remarks, vice president of U.S. sales operations Kurt McNeil said:

GM delivered its best March sales in five years thanks to a strengthening economy and new products, and we are expecting our third consecutive increase in market share versus last year. Sales of smaller cars have been robust for some time. Trucks have improved in lockstep with the housing market and the strength of the crossover market signals that America’s families are more confident about their financial health.

Not surprisingly, shares of both companies are up by more than 1% in intraday trading.

Meanwhile, shares of UnitedHealth Group are leading the Dow higher today, up 4.9% at the time of writing. As my colleague Dan Dzombak discussed earlier, the move follows a surprise announcement last night by Medicare Advantage, a souped-up version of Medicare.

Earlier in the year, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services proposed cutting certain benefits that would flow through the enhanced health-insurance program. Its initial proposal included a 2.3% reduction in what the government pays to private insurance companies to administer the plans. This all changed with last night’s announcement, as the CMS now plans to increase the amount by 3.3% instead. Sorta makes you think they left out a negative symbol on the first go-around.

When President Obama was re-elected, shares of UnitedHealth and other health insurers fell immediately. Is Obamacare a death knell for health insurers, or is the market missing out on some of the opportunities the law presents? In this brand-new …read more

Automakers Expected to Report Highest U.S. Sales Since 2007

By The Associated Press

By DEE-ANN DURBIN

DETROIT — U.S. car and truck sales are expected to hit their highest level in nearly six years in March, as buyers armed with tax refund checks were lured by flashy new vehicles and low interest rates.

Auto companies release U.S. sales figures Tuesday.

Analysts predict total sales of nearly 1.5 million cars and trucks, a number not seen since May 2007. That’s almost double the 855,000 vehicles sold in March 2009, the low point for sales during the economic downturn, according to Ward’s AutoInfoBank. Sales are expected to be up 3 to 5 percent over last March.

Alec Gutierrez, a senior market analyst with the car pricing company Kelley Blue Book, said the improving job market is boosting sales. The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell to a five-year low during March. Low interest rates are also making new-car purchases more appealing, Gutierrez said. The average rate for a 60-month new-car loan is now 4.12 percent, down from 4.52 percent at this time last year, according to Bankrate.com.

And Gutierrez says tax refunds can also spur purchases. The average federal tax refund this year is nearly $3,000, or enough to cover the down payment on a three-year lease of a Toyota Camry hybrid or a BMW 3-Series sedan.

Full-size pickup truck sales are expected to rise nearly 15 percent in March, following big gains in February, Kelley Blue Book said. Construction companies are rapidly replacing their truck fleets as the economy improves and they win more business.

Gutierrez said incentive deals — such as the $7,500 cash back now offered for the Chevrolet Silverado pickup — are helping truck sales, and should continue for a while. General Motors Co. (Ford Motor Co. (GM wants to clear out older models before introducing its new Chevrolet Silverado in a few months.

"Consumers looking for a new pickup truck should not hesitate to pull the trigger," he said.

Crossovers are also gaining, thanks to redesigned models like the Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4. Small cars are down slightly, in part because gas prices are relatively low. Gas averaged $3.64 per gallon at the end of March, down from $3.78 at the end of February and $3.91 in March of 2012, according to AAA.

Honda Motor Co.'s (HMC) sales gain should be among the best for March. Sales rose nearly 9 percent, according ...read more

Come and Get It While You Can: 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Priced

By Alexander Stoklosa

Mitsubishi might be on the fritz here in the U.S., but the company continues to push forward and keep its head just above water. To wit, the new 2014 Outlander crossover made its U.S. debut at last year’s L.A. auto show, following the plug-in hybrid version’s reveal in Paris, and it goes on sale here in June. Nothing can be sold without a price tag, however, so Mitsubishi has released some basic pricing info for the Outlander. Overall, the Outlander’s sticker doesn’t budge much, if at all, compared to the 2013 model it replaces.

The new Outlander again comes in ES, SE, and GT trim levels; the ES and SE are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, while the up-level GT gets a 3.0-liter V-6. A base, front-drive 2014 Outlander ES starts at $23,820, only $300 more than last year’s model. The SE commands $24,620—$200 less than the 2013 iteration—and adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, a touch-screen infotainment display, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and keyless entry with push-button starting. The GT starts at $28,620, $800 less than the all-wheel-drive 2013 GT, and adds the aforementioned V-6 engine, Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control all-wheel-drive setup, paddle shifters, HID headlights, and wood grain interior trim.

Mitsubishi’s future still solidly occupies the “questionable” category, but a new crossover like the Outlander perhaps gives the company its best shot yet at motivating a turnaround in this market. It’s priced in the thick of the compact SUV segment—Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Cherokee, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4—but is the only rig to offer a third-row seat. What, you think the tiny, three-cylinder Mirage hatchback will be Mitsu’s ark?

Spy Shots: Lincoln MKC prototype spied out testing

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

As was the case with the Lincoln MKZ, it appears that Lincoln isn’t wasting any time getting its newest model transformed from concept to production form. We just saw the MKC Concept earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show, and based on these spy shots, it looks like the final touches are being put in place for the 2014 Lincoln MKC crossover.

Sharing its platform with the Ford Escape, we can definitely see some similarities between these two compact crossovers when it comes to the roofline and daylight opening, but through the heavy camouflage, Lincoln’s signature split-wing grille can easily be seen and it looks like the concept’s taillights will also make it to reality. On the disappointing side, it looks like the integrated exhaust outlets are being ditched for some round outlets, and we can’t tell if the production version will keep the Audi-like clamshell rear liftgate.

Is Ford Getting on Track in Europe?

By John Rosevear, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Ford‘s European sales numbers for February are in, and once again it’s an ugly result: The Blue Oval‘s overall sales in the 19 markets it counts as “Europe” were down 19% over year-ago totals for the month.

That doesn’t compare well with the overall industry’s 11.4% year-over-year decline. Ford – for many years, Europe‘s second-largest automaker — appears to be losing market-share ground in one of its most important regional markets.

But if you look very closely, there are some early hints that Ford’s European turnaround plans might be getting on track.

A silver lining* amid grim numbers?
It’s the nature of PR folks to look for the most positive way to frame tough news, and Ford’s PR crew is no exception. So it’s no surprise that Monday’s press release featured this carefully parsed bit of optimism: “Ford passenger car retail market share in key European markets* rose 0.6 percentage points, to 7.2%.”

You know it’s getting tough for Ford in Europe when the only good news they’ve got comes with an asterisk.

In this case, though, the asterisk links to a note saying that “key European markets” include the U.K., Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. Those four countries together represent about 80% of Ford’s total sales volume in its 19 European markets.

Ford did have some less carefully parsed high points to, er, point out. The all-new Kuga SUV (a twin of the U.S. market‘s Ford Escape) and just-updated Fiesta subcompact are both doing well, with orders up 27% and 18%, respectively, over year-ago numbers.

Ford of Europe vice president Roelant de Waard said in a statement that the company is reducing sales to daily rental fleets and other low-margin business, instead choosing to focus on increasing retail sales and market share. That’s the right long-term strategy, preserving Ford’s per-sale margins and pricing power, but it will make the Blue Oval‘s sales numbers look ugly for a while when compared to some of its rivals.

Settling a labor dispute that cost Ford some sales
Ford also announced, late last week, that it had come to an agreement with workers who had been staging protests at its factory in Genk, Belgium, and at some of the factory’s suppliers. Workers have been concerned about Ford’s decision to close the Genk plant after 2014, part of a comprehensive turnaround plan aimed at returning Ford’s money-losing European operation to profitability by mid-decade.

The Genk factory builds the Mondeo mid-sized sedan as well as the S-MAX and Galaxy minivans. Production had been essentially halted since the closure was announced in October of last year. Supplies of all three had run short over the last couple of months, a factor that has weighed on Ford’s recent European sales results, de Waard said.

The company confirmed on Monday that Genk’s production lines have been restarted, and de Waard said that Ford will now “move quickly” to meet “strong demand”. Ford’s February sales of …read more

Official: NHTSA investigating 725k Ford, Mercury vehicles for stalling issue

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

Owners of Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner, Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan models, listen up. According to a report on Automotive News, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into these four vehicles totaling an estimated 725,000 units. The investigation appears to center around a malfunctioning throttle body on non-hybrid models of the 2005-2012 Escape and 2011-2012 Fusion. With Mercury dying off after the 2011 model year, this probe will also apply to the 2005 through 2011 Mariner and the 2011 Milan. There has been some discussion around the Escape stalling issue for some time now, but this investigation appears to be larger in scope than before.

Though not a recall yet, NHTSA‘s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 123 complaints of stalling or surging vehicles, while Ford itself has logged 1,472 complaints. The investigation report, which is posted below, seems to indicate that a faulty circuit board for the throttle body could cause the vehicle to go into limp mode, which, according to NHTSA, could cause complaints of both stalling and surging.

Study: <em>Consumer Reports</em> criticizes small turbo engines for misleading performance, fuel economy claims [w/video]

By Zach Bowman

Ford Ecoboost Engine Cover

Consumer Reports has taken aim at at small-displacement, forced-induction engines, saying the powerplants don’t manage to deliver on automaker fuel economy claims. Manufacturers have long held that smaller, turbocharged engines pack all power of their larger displacement cousins with significantly better fuel economy, but the research organization says that despite scoring high EPA economy numbers, the engines are no better than conventional drivetrains in both categories. Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports, says the forced induction options “are often slower and less fuel efficient than larger four and six-cylinder engines.”

Specifically, CR calls out the new Ford Fusion equipped with the automaker’s Ecoboost 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The institute’s researchers found the engine, which is a $795 option over the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder, fails to match competitors in acceleration and served up 25 miles per gallon in testing, putting the sedan dead last among other midsize options.

The Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Sonata Turbo and Ford Escape 2.0T all got dinged for the same troubles, though Consumer Reports has found the turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the BMW 328i does deliver on its promises. You can check out the full press release below. You can also read the full study on the Consumer Reports site, or scroll down for a short video recap.

German Supplier Equips Ford Escape to be 15-Percent More Fuel Efficient

By Jens Meiners

Cutting down on fuel consumption and emissions is costly, and that’s why automakers are fighting excessive regulation. And listening to them, it might seem as if all conventional ways to improve fuel economy have been exhausted. Downsizing often requires new engine generations, and, of course, forced induction of some sort. Beyond that, things get really expensive when manufacturers begin to move toward electrification. But there is some good news not only for the corporate bean counters, but also for customers: There’s still a lot of potential in the conventionally powered car, as evidenced by a Ford Escape that’s been optimized for improved fuel efficiency by the North American engineering bureau of German supplier Schaeffler using near-volume-production pieces.

To demonstrate the impact of a number of small optimizations, Schaeffler deliberately picked a contemporary crossover that’s generally hailed for its efficiency: the Ford Escape with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Designed as a showcase vehicle for the North American market, Schaffler chose an all-wheel-drive version equipped with a torque-converter automatic—characteristics that are popular with American shoppers.

The largest improvement in the EPA city cycle, a whopping six percent, is achieved by a stop-start system. Integrated into the gearbox, the stop-start system offers performance that is superior to current systems, especially in sudden change-of-mind situations, where the system disengages and re-engages the engine in an extremely short period of time. An improved torque converted results in a further city-cycle gain of three percent. The most impressive savings come on the highway cycle, which sees a six-percent improvement thanks to a system that decouples the rear axle when it’s not in use—the same system provides a two-percent improvement in the city, too.

Relatively minor improvements such as friction-optimized wheel bearings, valvetrain, and belt drive add up to considerable additional savings; the same is true of re-engineered thermal management and automatic grille shutters. Altogether, the efficiency gains amount to 14 percent on the highway and 15 percent in the city.

The cost of the improvement, Schaeffler tells us, is estimated at less than $40 per percentage point saved. “It is a very good value proposition,” says Peter Gutzmer, head of R&D at the supplier. That is certainly true, especially when compared to hybridization or advanced lightweight technology.

2014 Subaru Forester First Drive: 2.5i Manual and CVT, and 2.0XT Turbo

2014 Subaru Forester

The Forester could be credited as the original formulator of the car-based crossover SUV. This most recent iteration stands proud against its newly redesigned, sleek, and carlike competition—the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and Mazda CX-5—while looking neither particularly sleek nor carlike. But the evolutionary styling masks a comprehensive overhaul that includes a new turbo engine and fresh transmissions. Suspect dead, Mich. student safe after abduction

A parolee abducted and raped a Central Michigan University student, set a house on fire where the woman had fled for help and was fatally shot miles away by a sheriff’s deputy, authorities said Thursday.

Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski said the man was identified as Eric Ramsey, 30, of Mount Pleasant.

“We don’t know what possessed him to do that. We may never find out,” Mioduszewski said.

The woman was abducted Wednesday from the campus in Mount Pleasant, about 120 miles northwest of Detroit. The sheriff said Ramsey drove the woman in her own vehicle to a home off campus and bound and raped her there.

He said Ramsey then put her back in the Ford Escape and pledged to kill her, but she escaped the moving vehicle and ran to a home yelling for help.

While the woman was inside the home talking to an emergency dispatcher on the phone, Ramsey “ended up pouring gasoline on the house and then lit on fire,” Mioduszewski said in a statement.

A 14-year-old boy, his 11-year-old sister and 2-year-old brother were alone inside the home in nearby Lincoln Township when the woman banged on the door for help. The teenager, James Persyn III, told Mlive.com that he let the woman in, locked the door and grabbed his hunting knife.

He said he while the woman was using his phone to call 911, he moved her, his siblings and the family dog into the bathroom.

Meanwhile, the sheriff said, “one of the homeowners arrived home … and was able to put the fire out,” using an extinguisher.

Ramsey was spotted early Thursday in Otsego County, where he rammed the first of two state police cars. The sheriff said he subsequently stole a garbage truck and was fatally shot by a deputy in Crawford County, about 70 miles north of the university.

Campus police Chief Bill Yeagley said Ramsey told the woman that he chose her at random outside the Student Activity Center on campus. The chief said the woman saved her own life by fleeing from the car.

“I believe she made all the right choices,” Yeagley said. “She’s the true hero in this.”

Central Michigan University President George Ross said the school would support the Grand Rapids-area woman and her family.

Ramsey had been on parole since last summer after serving the minimum five-year prison sentence for assault with intent to do great bodily harm, according to Corrections Department online records. The maximum sentence was 15 years. Inmates are eligible for a parole review once they serve the minimum punishment.

“The parole board generally doesn’t give a rationale for why or why they don’t parole (an inmate),” said Russ Marlan, a Corrections Department spokesman. “I looked at his behavior in prison. He was pretty good. He had six misconducts over five years. That’s a small amount. He was in minimum security the entire time.”

Ramsey had a job, regularly met with his parole officer and had tested negative for drugs, Marlan said.

His record also included convictions for destruction of police or fire property, resisting police and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Detroit: MKC Concept is the real fresh start for Lincoln [w/poll]

By Chris Paukert

Lincoln MKC Concept

We were admittedly bullish about the Lincoln MKC Concept when we introduced it to you yesterday, as we were taken aback by how cohesive the C-platform crossover is in the metal. As it turns out, so were you, dear reader. With hundreds of comments booked on our original Deep Dive story, the overwhelming temperature of the Autoblog Commenteriat is one of surprise and delight – quite an accomplishment for a marque that many had written off for dead. The reception here under the bright lights of the Detroit Auto Show appears to be no less positive, but we thought you might want a second, closer look afforded by these live photos.

Lincoln remains mum on production MKC drivetrain specifics (we’re thinking it will start with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder out of its similarly sized Ford Escape relative, or maybe the midlevel 1.6-liter), but we shouldn’t have to wait too long. The showcar is expected to closely mirror the production model (due as early as later this year), so much so that Ford global marketing boss Jim Farley explicitly told the press conference masses, “When you see the MKC, do not think concept.” That’s good news, as the MKC is pivotal to Lincoln’s effort to rebuild awareness and consideration on the back of its MKZ sedan, a model just now going on sale. In fact, with the small crossover segment exploding, the MKC could very well turn out to be more important to the brand than the MKZ.

After seeing these new photos, are you more or less enamored with Lincoln’s new concept? Leave a comment after voting in our poll below.
