SRT Unveils 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 392 Appearance Package, Chrysler 300 SRT Concept

The 2013 New York auto show is ramping up in the frigid northeast, but on the other side of the country in California, things are hot at the annual Spring Festival, held for owners of LX-platform Chrysler models. (For those not in the know, those are the Dodge Challenger and Charger, as well as the Chrysler 300.) Things got even hotter, however, when SRT revealed an all-new 392 appearance package for the 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 as well as a 300-based SRT concept.

The 392 moniker isn’t new—Dodge recently slapped it on the Challenger SRT8 for 2011 to create a special edition, later melding that car into the regular Challenger SRT8 lineup—and it’s a nod to the Chrysler’s 1950s 392 engines. (OK, so the SRT-specific 6.4-liter Hemi V-8′s displacement is actually 391 cubic inches, but what’s a little advantageous rounding among friends?) But this is the first time the 392 name has been applied to the Charger SRT8 sedan. Besides getting a 392 badge on each front fender, the limited-edition Charger’s hood bulge, roof, rear spoiler, and mirrors are painted black. The wheels are the same 20-inchers offered on the regular SRT8, but painted a black chrome finish, and there is a black stripe package that runs above the rocker panels.

The appearance kit will be available with five exterior paint colors: Bright White, Billet Silver, Plum Crazy, Hemi Orange, and TorRed. Mechanically, the Charger SRT8 is untouched, meaning it sports a 470-hp V-8 mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. Based on our testing, this combo is good for some impressive performance stats. Inside, there is a serialized plaque affixed to the dashboard showing which number the car is out of the 392 that will be built this year and next. Finally, for those lucky enough to get their hands on a Charger 392—SRT will start taking orders in April—the privilege will cost $2495 over the cost of a regular example. If the looks matter to you, the price won’t.

In addition to the Charger SRT8 392 package, SRT also debuted a Chrysler 300 SRT8–based concept car just for Spring Fest fans. The mean-looking 300 wears a non-metallic grayish-blue paint job, gets blacked-out trim, and black chrome wheels. According to Chrysler, the 300 SRT concept doesn’t preview any specific upcoming model or trim package, but merely was created as a treat for Spring Festival attendees. Still, we think it looks pretty bad-ass—or at least the front-end does. We just wish Chrysler had supplied a few more photos.

Dodge Expands Redline Treatment to Hemi-Powered Challenger R/T [2013 Chicago Auto Show]

The word “Redline” seems to convey white-knuckle, at-the-limit driving intensity, so it’s no wonder Dodge has applied the name to the sportiest iteration of its V-6 Challenger muscle car. Well, that and the Challenger Redline features plenty of red stripes. Regardless, the package suitably amped up the previously humdrum base version of Dodge’s big coupe. But eight cylinders are always better than six, right? Correct, so for 2013 Dodge is giving its 375-hp, Hemi V-8–powered Challenger R/T a similar Redline treatment; the result, predictably, is called the Challenger R/T Redline, and it is debuting at the 2013 Chicago auto show.

While the V-6 Challenger Rallye Redline is beefed up with the R/T model’s sportier suspension setup and a bevy of stripes, the R/T Redline’s upgrades are more limited. Starting with either a Challenger R/T or zootier R/T Plus model, buyers who check the Redline box on their order sheet are rewarded with basically a tape-and-wheel package. There’s a gray-and-red stripe that runs the length of each side of the vehicle, terminating on each rear quarter-panel with “Redline” lettering, plus a set of snazzy 20-inch wheels. The stripe package is more subtle than the V-6 Redline’s setup, and though the R/T’s wheels feature the same red lip accent as those found on the V-6 car, they are further, er, enhanced by a coat of red paint on the inner half of the inside of the rim. We think these red rings, visible through the wheel spokes, toe the line between cool and garish, but they’re not likely to stay red for long. We bet after a week or two of use, a good coat of dirt and road grime will tone down the look. Whether or not that’s a good thing is a matter of personal taste.

2013 Dodge Challenger R/T Redline

Appealingly, the R/T Redline is available with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission—the V-6 car is automatic-only. Cars equipped with the slushbox also get bright pedals, a Mopar T-handle shift lever, and remote start. Four exterior colors are available: Billet Silver, Granite Crystal, Bright White, and Pitch Black. We say skip the first three paint options and go straight for Black; the color combo brings new meaning to the term “murdered-out” in that it gives the Redline a sort of Batmobile-driving-through-blood-puddles sort of look.

The Redline package will be available this spring and buyers can begin placing orders now; the kit adds $1995 to the base price of the Challenger R/T or R/T Plus, for out-the-door prices of $32,985 and $34,985, respectively.

When Dodge released the Challenger Rallye Redline last year, it brought a new dimension of styling to the car’s classic muscle car lines, but it was only available in V6 form lacking the oomph to back up its sinister appearance. To remedy that situation, Dodge is unveiling the Challenger R/T Redline, powered by a Hemi V8 engine, at the Chicago Auto Show.

Other than the extra cylinders, most of the R/T’s Redline package carries over from the Rallye model including the custom-look 20-inch black chrome wheels with red paint accents, but the R/T version of the package gets more of a retro look to the side stripes with graphite graphics featuring Redline lettering. Cars equipped with the six-speed manual transmission will get a performance-tuned, low-restriction exhaust allowing the engine to produce 375 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque; cars with the five-speed auto are rated at 372 hp and 400 lb-ft, but they do offer a bright chrome Mopar t-handle shifter and steering wheel paddle shifters.

The R/T Redline Group is offered only on cars painted in Billet Silver, Granite Crystal, Bright White and Pitch Black, and it adds just $1,995 to the MSRP of the Challenger R/T (starting at $31,990) and the Challenger R/T Plus (starting at $33,990), which adds features like Nappa leather and Boston Acoustics speakers.

Official: 2014 Jeep Compass and Patriot get available PowerTech six-speed auto, modest changes

2014 Jeep Patriot - front three-quarter view, redThe 2014 Jeep Compass and Patriot are here, and as expected, the big news is the availability of a six-speed automatic transmission on certain models. The transmission, sourced from PowerTech (a subsidiary of Hyundai) will attempt to address the noise, vibration and harshness issues suffered by older CVT-equipped models by using noise-resistant gears. It has a long sixth gear to improve fuel economy, but Jeep hasn’t revealed the mileage numbers for the auto-equipped models yet.

The new automatic will be available as an option on the Sport trim of both spec, and as standard on Latitude and Limited models. It can be had in front-wheel-drive versions or those equipped with the optional Freedom Drive I. It can’t be specified with the Freedom Drive II, however, the full-time four-wheel-drive package with a low-range gear sticks with the unloved CVT2L Continuously Variable Transmission.

With their expected demises perhaps a year away, not much has changed otherwise. Engines are either the 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque or the 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 172 hp and 165 lb-ft, and the five-speed manual transaxle is still in the mix.

The Compass gets a catalog’s worth of shiny trim pieces to mark its last year, including plated upper grille trim with a “mold-in-color Billet Silver grille texture,” new headlight, fog light and taillight inner bezel treatments for the various trims, painted mirror caps, optional new 18-inch wheels for the Limited and an available backup camera. Inside are new trim options on the Latitude like a sport mesh and vinyl seat, and on the Limited, trims like Saddle Brown perforated leather seating. The Patriot gets no changes other than the addition of front seat-mounted airbags.

The price of the Patriot hasn’t changed, sticking with an MSRP of $15,995 (plus $995 destination). The press release below doesn’t mention the price of the Compass, so don’t be shocked if it gets goosed a bit from the $19,495 MSRP of the 2013 model.

Official: Dodge whips covers off 2013 Blacktop series

Dodge introduced us to its Blacktop model lineup a year ago with the 2012 Charger and followed up with more recently with the 2013 Challenger and 2013 Avenger. Now the automaker will be applying this ominous-looking treatment to the Durango, Grand Caravan and Journey models for 2013 as well. These models will be unveiled next week at the Detroit Auto Show, but Dodge has released most of the details for these new products including pricing and availability.

If the Grand Caravan R/T (aka, the Man Van) wasn’t aggressive enough for you or its $30,000 starting price was a little too pricey, then the 2013 Grand Caravan Blacktop could be the ticket. Starting with the SXT trim level (which stickers at $19,995), the Blacktop package costs only $595, and adds unique features such as blacked-out headlights, grille and fog lights bezels and an all-black interior. The van rides on black-accented, 17-inch aluminum wheels. The Grand Caravan Blacktop is only available in monochromatic paint schemes limited to Billet Silver, Brilliant Black, Maximum Steel, Redline Red and Stone White

Likewise, the 2013 Journey Blacktop is offered only on the SXT model (starting at $18,995) with all of the crossover’s normal options such as four- and six-cylinder engines, five- or seven-passenger seating and front- or all-wheel drive. The Blacktop package adds $995 to the Journey SXT‘s price and features many of the same black accents as the Grand Caravan like the headlights, grille, door mirrors and lower fascia. Exterior colors are limited to Bright Silver, Bright Red, Brilliant Black, Brilliant Red Tri-Coat, White, Pearl White Tri-Coat and Storm Grey, and the package’s 19-inch wheels come in Gloss Black. Inside, the Journey Blacktop comes standard with black cloth seats and Chrysler’s 8.4-inch Uconnect touch screen, but black leather is also available as an option.

Finally, the 2013 Durango Blacktop is offered on both the Rallye and R/T trim levels starting at just $295. For this price, customers will get similar black exterior accents as the other two models and standard 20-inch black wheels. The Durango R/T already has a pretty sporty interior so this is left alone, but if Durango Rallye buyers are looking for an upgraded interior, a $595 Blacktop option will equip the cabins with leather seats that have suede inserts, black wood trim and a 12-way drivers seat with lumbar adjustments. The Durango Blacktop colors are limited to Bright White, Brilliant Black, Granite Crystal, Billet Silver and Redline Red.
