Mini Clubvan Dies, Cutesy Panel-Wagon Segment Goes Down with It

It was the simplest of derivatives, yet it was not without charm. The Mini Clubvan has been terminated from Mini’s U.S. lineup after just 50 units sold since the wagon was introduced last summer, as first reported by Green Car Reports. The panel wagon was differentiated from the Clubman by the removal of the rear seats, and the addition of a partition and a carpeted load floor. Instead of replacing the rear windows with body panels, they were simply foiled. It came in three colors—Pepper White, Ice Blue, and Midnight Black—and with a single powerplant: the standard Mini’s 121-hp four-cylinder.

Apparently, BMW had forgotten about or underestimated the effect of President Johnson’s “Chicken Tax,” which slaps a whopping 25 percent onto imported commercial vehicles. Such an oversight makes us wonder why Mini didn’t simply convert Clubmans into Clubvans after the vehicles were imported into the U.S., which is what Ford does with its Turkish-built Transit Connect. Perhaps the company should prepare a conversion kit for Clubman buyers who find themselves in need of a delivery vehicle, or further differentiation. How about a homemade John Cooper Works Clubvan?



The Clubvan remains on sale in other parts of the world, where Mini says that sales are strong. As things stand stateside, however, the “premium compact delivery van” segment, as BMW calls it, has just been delivered a fatal blow.

Report: Mini Clubvan axed after just 50 sales

Well, that didn’t last long. According to Green Car Reports, Mini has discontinued the Clubvan from its model range in the United States.

Nathalie Bauters, Mini’s US communications manager, cited “relatively low demand and the effect of an excessive 25-percent tax on vehicles for commercial use (known as ‘the Chicken Tax‘)” as the key reasons for axing the Clubman from our market, GCR reports. The 2013 Clubvan launched in the US earlier this year, and to date roughly 50 examples have been sold.

The Clubvan, based on the Clubman model, features a flat load floor behind the two front seats, with blacked-out (well, body-colored) side windows. This nifty little cargo wagon could carry up to 33 cubic feet of goods, which while useful, pales in comparison to more capacious offerings like the Ford Transit Connect van.

Bauters told Green Car Reports that “sales of the Mini Clubvan have been strong in other markets worldwide, many of which benefit from tax advantages,” meaning the model will likely carry on elsewhere in the world.

Revisit 1973's Low Pollution Power Systems Development exhibit with this stylish gallery

Going into October 1973, the country’s Number One song was “We’re An American Band” from Flint, MI’s own Grand Funk. In nearby Ann Arbor, some folks were putting their own uniquely American spin on the alt-fuel vehicle, and we’ve got the pictures to prove it.

Thanks to a Flickr find by Green Car Reports of images from the the US National Archives, we offer glimpses from the First Symposium on Low Pollution Power Systems Development exhibition, as photographed by Frank Lodge. The pictures show off a bunch of electric vehicles in varying shapes and sizes. Fords, AMCs and a few other odd-shaped vehicles got the EV treatment. We don’t know how far these beasts went on a full charge, or whether they included eight-track machines, but we do know that there was some real style in the clothing choices of the drivers. Lotus pondering 'fake shifting' for Evora 414E plug-in hybrid

Some would say Lotus has some credibility among the green-car set since it supplied the body for the Tesla Roadster and has always been obsessed with extracting maximum performance from light weight. Now, our friends at Green Car Reports are suggesting that the UK boutique sportscar operation could lose that reputation by simulating the acceleration of a conventional geared transmission for its Evora 414E extended-range plug-in.

According to GCR, Lotus may design the car to temporarily cut power under acceleration to simulate the shifting process so that drivers can make-believe they’re driving a car with a conventional gear-based transmission. Citing what it calls “a person close to Lotus Engineering,” the report suggests Lotus may also drop in some commensurate sound effects.

As fans of the “seamless” acceleration delivered by an electric, transmission-less motor, Green Car Reports deems such efforts “idiotic,” but we are reminded of a similar technology’s popularity amongst continuously variable transmissions – artificial gear change points for paddle shifters and manual gates on gearlevers on CVT-equipped models like the Mitsubishi Lancer. The false cogswaps don’t really improve acceleration – in fact, they can harm it – but the shifting sensation apparently makes some drivers feel more comfortable.

Lotus first showed off a prototype of its Evora EREV at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show and last summer revealed some if its specifications, including the delivery of 738 pound-feet of torque and a tidy 0-60 time of just four seconds.
