How To Find Out If Your Friends Are Lying About Their #NoFilter Instagram Pics

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Instagram’s filters can make your legs look tanner and your sunsets look more majestic, but sometimes people leave the filters off their photos and tag them with #nofilter to prove just how magical their real lives are.

But the popular hashtag begs the questions: Is your friend’s skin really that glowing? A new site called Filter Fakers lets you bust people who violate the social contract that is #nofilter.

All you have to do is plug the photo’s URL into the site and the filter, if any, will be revealed. The site also has a feed of offending Instagrammers.

Review: Generate better-looking Windows 8 start tiles with OblyTile

One of the biggest selling points of Windows 8 is the tiled start page, which looks pretty and enticing to use. But one of the drawbacks of that page is that, when you install a third-party program (i.e. something not from the Windows App Store), that program’s start tile usually comes out looking like a mess. Small portable app OblyTile lets you generate better-looking tiles and make the start page a pleasure to look at again. And if you hate tiles, you may like what OblyTile can do for your standard desktop, too.

Upon opening the app, you can view the manager that shows your list of installed apps. Just choose the one you want to install the tile for.

The reason why a third-party tile looks strange is because it pulls the default logo from the program’s installation folder. Most of these logos aren’t optimized for the Windows 8 tile menu. They may be too small, too low-definition, or both. The key is to get a logo or icon big enough and high-def enough to stand on the tiled start page.

Although OblyTile will generate new tiles for you, it doesn’t actually supply the icons. I recommend websites such as the Icon Archive, where you can download high-quality icons for free.

Alternatively, you can choose a file, a folder, or a website URL and enter the path of the program or website manually.

OblyTile doesn’t require installation. Once you’re in the program, you can either manually search for the desired program on your PC or open up the Manager on the right-hand side, which generates a list of your installed programs. The Manager can also make a list of your current program shortcuts and offer you the ability to convert those shortcuts into tiles.

Infiltration complete: Google's Chrome app launcher lands on Windows

After months of behind-the-scenes teases, Google appears to have quietly introduced the Chrome App Launcher in the stable version of Chrome for Windows. The Chrome OS feature—ported over to the Chrome for Windows developer channel in February—wasn’t available through a search of the Chrome Web Store or advertised on the site’s front page at this writing, but Windows users can install it now by navigating directly to the Chrome App Launcher page inside Chrome’s app store.

First spotted by Engadget, the new feature is Google’s incursion into the desktop PC, creating a self-sufficient Chrome ecosystem inside Microsoft’s OS. The Chrome App Launcher lets you directly fire up any Chrome Web app or packaged app right from the Windows taskbar—even when Chrome itself isn’t running.

Packaged apps are HTML 5-based standalone desktop apps based on Chrome that don’t look anything like your Web browser. There are no tabs, URL address bars, or bookmarks, but these apps do rely on Chrome’s underlying infrastructure and are installed via the Chrome Web Store.

Play Cut The Rope on your desktop with the Chrome packaged app.

It’s still early days for packaged apps, but there are a number you can try out, such as a generic text editor and an IRC client, as well as known quantities like Cut the Rope, the Economist, and Weather Bug. For a list of interesting packaged apps to test see this post from Pocketables.

Tyra Banks And Ashton Kutcher Help Launch Social Shopping Platform

By Karsten Strauss, Forbes Staff

Adding yet another layer to the enterprise that is Tyra Banks, the former model turned television personality is taking to the startup game with an investment in a new social shopping platform. Ashton Kutcher, who has made a name for himself as a tech-centric venture investor through his own firm, A-Grade Investments, has also laid down cash. Called The Hunt, Banks and Kutcher’s latest venture helps people track down things they want to buy using Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr or any website with a photo of a product. While surfing the web, when you find something that appeals to you – a gadget, a piece of furniture, a pair of shoes you saw a celebrity wear –  you can upload the URL or just post a picture of it, which lets everyone else browsing the site know that you’re trying to find out where to get that product. As you browse what items other users are seeking, you can “follow” their searches so that when they find out where to get their coveted handbag, dress or pair of shoes, you will be notified as well. If you see a product that you recognize and know where it can be purchased, you can let the seeker (or ‘hunter’) know all about it. The San Francisco-based company was founded by Tim Weingarten, who’d previously headed Visage Mobile. Other investors in the company include A-Grade Investments’ Guy Oseary, Coca-Cola executive Rohan Oza, DesiHits! CEO Anjula Acharia-Bath, and Luminari Capital director Michael Banks. I tried it myself, setting up a profile and posting a “hunt” for a hooded blazer I’d briefly mentioned in a previous article about Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s penchant for hoodies. As I browsed it became clear that its early days for the new venture, as the categories for which people search are limited to mostly women’s fashion. We can probably expect more categories for men’s products in the future, as well as electronic gadgets and maybe even apps or games that people have seen pictures of but haven’t been able to identify. That said, it may well be that women are the focus users for The Hunt, as a Pinterest-style of platform has been known to really connect with female users. The Hunt is the first investment Ms. Banks has made through the newest arm of her Tyra Banks Company enterprise, Fierce Capital LLC. The fund will focus on early-stage companies, including women-led startups, according to the company. Ms. Banks first came to public attention as a model, sauntering down the runway wearing hip and sexy outfits from top international fashion designers. A career in television followed, with Banks at the helm of “The Tyra Banks Show” and “America’s Next Top Model.” She’s even written a children’s book called Modelland. Kutcher, a former male model turned TV and film actor, is currently starring alongside Jon Cryer in the hit CBS show Two and a Half Men. His venture investments have included Spotify, Uber, Foursquare, Getaround and YPlan, among others. He also …read more

Finding the C-terminal on my furnace

By jojo2

I am attempting to hook up my new thermostat which requires a C-wire connection. However, I am unable to find the C-terminal on my control board. None of them are labeled C. It is a B18099-08 board (image link below), my guess built in 1994 or 1995, and no longer made or sold. Does anybody know where the C-terminal would be located or titled? Or if their is a suitable alternative terminal to use?

As a second option, there is an external 24 VAC converter box next to the furnace. Is there a way I can connect my C-wire to that instead? I tried both terminals on it but didn’t get power to my new thermostat. I know I probably need to close the circuit on that, but not sure how I could do that with only one wire (the C-Wire).

Thanks,
Jim

Review: Amara is a Web-based service that lets anyone transcribe and translate online video

Producing video subtitles is a laborious process. First you must transcribe the original video, writing down everything that’s said, proofread and correct then, synchronize the subtitles with the audio so they appear on-screen right when the lines are being delivered. Finally, you translate the text into other languages. Amara is a platform that tries to crowd-source all of this work, making it possible for you to set up a system where droves of volunteers help you produce video subtitles for free, without having to download or install anything. It’s not entirely successful, but it’s an interesting first step in the right direction.

Before you can translate a video, you must first transcribe it. You can select any video for transcription – you don’t have to own the content: it just has to be available online. Simply provide Amara with a video‘s URL on YouTube, Vimeo, or another online video service, and it launches into the transcription interface. You don’t have to open an account before you begin–you can just start working.

Amara’s Beginner mode lets you play 4-second snippets of video as you transcribe, hitting Tab to play the next snippet when you’re ready.

The first step in the transcription process is just writing down what the people in the video say without worrying too much about typos and capitalization. Amara’s transcription interface is simple and intuitive. By default, it plays four seconds of video, then automatically pauses. You then type what you’ve just heard, and hit Tab to play four more seconds. If you miss anything, you can hit Shift-Tab to rewind four seconds and listen again. If you don’t like to constantly hit Tab and Shift-Tab, Amara can also auto-pause the video for you. In this mode, you simply listen to the video and type as you listen, with Amara pausing it automatically to let you catch up. The way this works isn’t clearly explained (Amara calls it “magical”), but it works remarkably well: The video paused and played right when I needed it to, and I had to hit Shift-Tab to rewind only rarely. Even with the excellent auto-pausing engine, transcription is still a laborious process, though. I touch-type quickly, but transcribing a four-minute video took me about twenty minutes of intense concentration.

The “magical autopause” mode pauses the video cleverly to let you catch up on your typing, and works very well for touch-typists.

The next step after transcribing the video is timing the subtitles. Here, you must watch the video and click a button whenever the speaker starts on the next subtitle. Just like transcription, this requires unbroken concentration; fast reflexes help, too. Amara’s video introduction to this step says it’s “like a computer game,” but it’s not one I would play for fun. The interface is effective, but it definitely feels like work.

Twitter OAuth feature can be abused to hijack accounts, researcher says

A feature in the Twitter API (application programming interface) can be abused by attackers to launch credible social engineering attacks that would give them a high chance of hijacking user accounts, a mobile application developer revealed Wednesday at the Hack in the Box security conference in Amsterdam.

The issue has to do with how Twitter uses the OAuth standard to authorize third-party apps, including desktop or mobile Twitter clients, to interact with user accounts through its API, Nicolas Seriot, a mobile applications developer and project manager at Swissquote Bank in Switzerland, said Thursday.

Twitter allows apps to specify a custom callback URL where users will be redirected after granting those apps access to their accounts through an authorization page on Twitter’s site.

Seriot found a way to craft special links that, when clicked by users, will open Twitter app authorization pages for popular clients like TweetDeck. However, those requests would specify the attacker’s server as callback URLs, forcing users’ browsers to send their Twitter access tokens to the attacker.

Mod_rewrite http to https

By arumon

Hi Team,

I have a question on the apache mod_rewrite module. I have a requirement of rewriting only specific url’s to https.

Requirement below:-

want to match a word (test) on the url and if matches then it should rewrite to https.

example:-

http://www.testing.com/xxx/yyy/test/zzz.html should rewrite to https://www.testing.com/xxx/yyy/test/zzz.html

the rewrite rule should match the word “test” and if the requesting url is having the word test then it should rewrite to https else all should be http.

Review: DivX Stash stores Web videos for mobile viewing

Keeping track of all the online videos you want to watch can be a challenge…especially if you’re not always in front of your PC. Sometimes, you see a video while you’re on your computer, but you just can’t remember what or where it is by the time you launch the browser on your smartphone. Enter DivX Stash, introduced at Mobile World Congress. This free service helps you create a queue of videos that you can watch later, either on your PC or mobile device. It’s a very handy tool, and one that works well—most of the time.

Once the browser add-on is installed, you’ll see a “Stash It” button appear on compatible video sites.

To use DivX Stash, you start on your browser, preferably on a PC or Mac. You must log in with your Facebook account and install the browser extension or add-on to Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. You then surf the Web as usual. When you come across a video on a DivX Stash-supported site (including YouTube, Hulu, Vimeo, Funny or Die, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, College Humor, and more) , you’ll see a button underneath the video that says “Stash It.” Clicking this adds the video to your Stash, which you can access via the Web on your computer or via mobile apps for iOS and Android devices. I tested it on my iPhone and iPad.

From your Stash, you can click a video title and watch the video within the DivX Stash interface. DivX Stash doesn’t download and store the videos offline. It simply stores the video URL and brings it up within its own app. That means you’ll need an active data connection if you’re using a smartphone or tablet, and spotty service will greatly impact the quality of the video you see.

In addition to the videos you stash, DivX Stash also creates a feed of all the videos found in your Facebook feed. These are all of the videos posted by your friends and made available to you on Facebook. It’s nice to have them all in one scannable list, but it’s unfortunate that you cannot search the list to find a specific video you may have seen. Instead, you have to scroll through the videos, which appear with those most recently posted near the top, to find what you’re looking for.

Michael Hall: Building an Ubuntu SDK App: rev 2

In my previous article I discussed how I got started with a new Ubuntu SDK app, and how easy it was to get a listing of Reddit articles displayed in a simple list. In my second revision, I added image thumbnails to that list, the ability to change to a different subreddit, and finally the capability to actually display the article’s content.

Thumbnails

For some subreddits, Reddit will provide an image thumbnail to go along with the article.  Not only is this a nice feature of Reddit, but it’s also supplied as part of their API.  Since ListItem.Subtitled derives from ListItem.Base, it also has an optional icon property that can conveniently take a URL.  This made adding the thumbnail to my ListView incredibly easy.

Since not all articles have a thumbnail image, for now I just used a placeholder (the avatar image you get from the template).  I also didn’t do anything to make sure the images would fit in the ListItem.  In later revisions I would get a little smarter about how I handled thumbnails.

ListView {
    id: articleList
    ...
    delegate: ListItem.Subtitled {
        ...
        icon: (model.data.thumbnail) ? model.data.thumbnail : Qt.resolvedUrl("avatar.png")
        ...
    }
}

Changing Subreddits

Now that the subreddit article list in a pretty good state, I turned my attention to being able to change from one subreddit to another.  Revision 1 had a text input and button for this, but due to my not understanding QML layout this was hidden behind the header in those earlier screenshots.

So this time I decided to use another Ubuntu SDK component, Popups.Dialog, to show the form as an overlay on top of the article list.  This was very simple to do, and it looks so much nicer and more professional too.  The default theme that you get with the Ubuntu SDK makes it easy to make good looking apps, even if you’re not a designer.

The Dialog itself is straight forward, you simply wrap it up in a Component (you’ll see why later), give it a title and a bit of descriptive text for the user, and add your widgets to it.  All I needed was a TextField and a Button.  Since the Reddit “Frontpage” doesn’t have a subreddit, I decided to use no subreddit value to mean “Frontpage”, and used the TextField’s placeholderText property to display that when the TextField was empty (and yes I called it “Homepage” at first, I did correct it in later revisions).

    Component {
         id: dialogComponent
         Popups.Dialog {
             id: dialog

Track leads will be in charge of approving Blueprints and getting them on the schedule.  If you are going to be responsible for running a session, please get with the track lead to make sure they have marked you as being required for that session. If you would like to get a session added for this UDS, you can do so either through registering a Blueprint or proposing a meeting through Summit itself.  Both approaches will require the approval of a Track Lead, so make sure you discuss it with them ahead of time.

Changes to…

Using feedback from attendees of the March UDS, we will be implementing a number of changes for UDS 13.05 to improve the experience.

Hangouts

Google+ Hangouts have a limit of 15 active participants (if started with a Canonical user account, it’s 10 if you don’t have a Google Apps domain), but in practice we rarely had that many people join in the last UDS.  This time around we’re going to encourage more people to join the video, especially community participants, so please check your webcams and microphones ahead of time to be ready.  If you want to join, just ask one of the session leaders on IRC for the hangout URL. We will be keeping the introductory plenary on the morning of the first day, because that helps set the tone, goals and information needed for the rest of the week.  In addition to that, we have added back a closing plenary at the end of …read more

Speek eases conference calling hassles for Windows Phone

Speek
Speek for Windows Phone 8

If that headline sounds familiar, it’s because I wrote a similar one back in January about Speek for iOS. It’s an app that brings conference-call creation and management to your smartphone.

At that time, I’m sure at least some folks were hoping for a Windows Phone version. Hope no more, because Speek is now available for Windows Phone 8.

Like its iOS predecessor, Speek for Windows Phone lets you set up conference calls right on your handset, using a highly visual motif. Each person is represented by their thumbnail photo from your address list, this giving you the chance to “see” everyone on the call.

Because I don’t have a Windows Phone handset on which to test-drive the app, I’m making a few assumptions about it relative to the iOS version. The latter, for example, lets you set up an account right on the phone. This consists in part of a custom username that doubles as your unique URL, like Speek.com/WidgetCo.
