IGN Hangouts Presents: Evil Dead

Hail to the King, baby! For years the cult phenomenon that is Evil Dead has slashed its way into every medium possible. We’ve seen Deadites hacked up in games, movies, comics and musicals (yes, Evil Dead has a musical). So when we heard they were remaking the original, fans were equal parts excited and worried.

Thankfully, the remake breathed new life into the franchise with a fantastic re-imagining of the series. IGN’s own Chris Tilly called it “every bit as good as Sam Raimi’s originals” and said it was “A terrifying, exhilarating and relentlessly entertaining new chapter in the Evil Dead story.” You can check out our video review below.

If you haven’t seen the movie yet (and seriously, why haven’t you?), it’s out on Blu-Ray tomorrow. In honor of the blood soaked reboot’s transition to the small screen, we’re hanging out with cast members Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas and director Fede Alvarez and asking them about the movie. But why should we have all of the fun?

Weekend Box Office (04/07/13): Evil Dead tops with $26 million, Jurassic Park 3D earns $18 million.

By Scott Mendelson, Contributor

Just under ten years after the somewhat shocking $28 million debut of the much-hyped (and surprisingly not terrible) Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, which jump-started the modern horror remake trend and solidified the return of grind house horror, the $26 million debut of a much-hyped Evil Dead remake this weekend is not so much a surprise as a formality.  The Sony Pictures revamp more than made back its budget of $17 million in the first three days, also snagging $4.5 million overseas in the process.  The Sony/Film District/Ghost House production is produced by series-helmer Sam Raimi and given the official blessing of series lead Bruce Campbell (also a producer), but otherwise is its own thing. Not that such a seal of approval always matters…  Wes Craven‘s approved remakes of his 70’s “classics” (Last House on the Left with $32 million and The Hills Have Eyes with $41 million) made noticeably less than the Nightmare on Elm Street remake ($32 million on opening weekend, $63 million total), which he strongly opposed, but it was indeed a boost in terms of fan credibility for a remake of a very much beloved cult property.  The film pulled a weekend multiplier of 2.26x off a $11.9 million Friday, which would be pretty lousy for anything that isn’t a horror film or an insanely anticipated sequel.  But horror films are generally cheap and their business is generally brisk and brief.  But heck, even if it does just double its weekend number for the rest of its domestic run, that’s $54 million. The only open question is whether the word of mouth swearing its the most gruesome and stomach-churning R-rated horror film in recent memory helps or hinders word of mouth. …read more

Evil Dead: Ash's No Good, Very Bad Life

Evil Dead movies, Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams ranks as one of our favorite movie characters ever. And while it’s true that the chainsaw-wielding, time-trippiest employee of S-Mart is given to feats of heroism on occasion, he’s more often prone to getting his ass kicked by Deadites, or being forced to cut his girlfriend’s head off, and then getting his ass kicked by her Deadite body. He also gets hurt a lot, isn’t too smart, and is really good at making sure everyone around him dies most of the time. That’s why we love him!

Will the Old and New Evil Deads Collide?

Actor Bruce Campbell, star of the original Evil Dead trilogy, and Fede Alvarez, director of the new Evil Dead, chatted about the possibility of a crossover between the two takes on the horror franchise.

Campbell was coy about whether he made a cameo in the new Evil Dead, but he did say “yes” when asked if he would appear in a future sequel to the new Evil Dead.

The actor also said his dream is for there to be four original Evil Deads featuring his character Ash — yes, he still hopes that he and director Sam Raimi will make Evil Dead 4 in the future — and three installments of the new Evil Dead because seven is a good number.

What's the Best Evil Dead Movie?

Legend has it that it was written by the dark ones: Necronomicon Ex Mortes. Roughly translated — The Book of the Dead!

With the Evil Dead remake coming next week, we at IGN have been thinking an awful lot about poor, poor Ash Williams and the bad run of luck he had in the original Sam Raimi trilogy of films… Ah, who are we kidding? We love seeing Ash get the crap beaten out of him!

Anyway, we got to talking about what the greatest of the Evil Dead movies is. And this lead to a video chat! And a poll! One of which you can watch below and the other of which you can vote in. Which we hope you do, because we really need this question answered before Henrietta breaks out of the cellar…

Evil Dead Review

By Chris Tilly

The original Evil Dead was nothing short of a horror phenomenon. A micro-budget shocker about a demonic book that unleashed hell on a group of vacationing teenagers, the film made a mint at the box office globally, spawned two hugely successful sequels, and launched the careers of director Sam Raimi and star Bruce Campbell.

So it’s with understandable trepidation that fans will approach this re-imagining of the cult classic. But feel free to leave your apprehension at the theatre door, as this new chapter in the Evil Dead story is quite simply astonishing – a vicious assault on the senses that is every bit as good as the originals, and one that will trigger a whole new set of nightmares for those who like their horror both unrelenting and unforgiving.

Zach Braff Talks Filming ‘Oz’ In Metro Detroit During Reddit ‘AMA’

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Actor Zach Braff had some kind words for Detroit during a Thursday AMA with fans on Reddit. But he also had criticism for Michigan’s film industry in his “Ask Me Anything” discussion.

The actor, best known for his roles in “Garden State” and “Scrubs,” got a chance to check out the Detroit area while filming “Oz,” which was released Friday. Directed by Michigan native Sam Raimi, it functions as a prequel of sorts to “The Wizard of Oz” and stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz. In the film, Braff plays a flying monkey.

Here’s what Braff had to say about Detroit during his AMA:

Oz Sequel in the Works

Oz the Great and Powerful doesn’t open until tomorrow, but Disney already has a sequel in the works.

Variety reports that the studio has commissioned Mitchell Kapner to write a follow-up to the Sam Raimi picture. He co-wrote the first film with David Lindsay-Abaire.

There’s no info yet on what the film will be about, but as the trade paper notes, Kapner can utilize L. Frank Baum’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. That book is in the public domain, and is the basis of the classic 1939 Judy Garland film. That said, the sequel will not be able to use any of the concepts that originated while making the Warner Bros. picture — including the famed ruby slippers.

Monster House Director to Helm Poltergeist Remake

The remake of 1982’s Poltergeist will be helmed by Gil Kenan, best known for his work on the ’06 family-friendly horror Monster House.

The MGM production will be produced by Sam Raimi, Nathan Kahane, and Roy LeePulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, a self-confessed Poltergeist obsessive, is reportedly still on board to pen the screenplay. “Well, you know there’s not too much I can say,” Lindsay-Abaire told Collider last year. “I will say that I handed in a second draft and people are incredibly excited about it…I will also say that there are very few people who are as obsessed with the original movie as I am, so I would try to write a script that I would want to see as a fan. I will say that.”

Raimi Blames Blizzard for Warcraft Falling Apart

You may recall that Spider-Man and Evil Dead director Sam Raimi was once attached to turn Warcraft into a feature film for Legendary Pictures. While doing press for his new release Oz the Great and Powerful, Raimi recalled why the project didn’t happen.

In a chat with Vulture, Raimi said:

“Robert Rodat was working on the script, and it was taking a long time. I think they were getting a little antsy at Legendary, the production company. Actually, what happened was even more complicated, so let me go back a little bit. First, they asked me if I wanted to make it, and I said, ‘Yes, I love World of Warcraft, and I think it would make a great picture.’ So I read a screenplay they had that was written by the guys at

What? Is Evil Dead 4 Happening?

It’s no surprise that wherever Sam Raimi goes, Evil Dead questions are sure to follow. However, while at a Meet the Filmmakers event for his upcoming Oz: The Great and the Powerful, Raimi dropped a pretty huge bombshell (from Disney’s official transcript):

“I would love to make Evil Dead 4. My brother and I plan to work on the script this summer.”

The brother in question is likely Ivan Raimi, who collaborated with Sam on projects like Drag Me to Hell, Army of Darkness and Darkman. Of course, with Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead reboot coming out in April, this would mean two ongoing series of the same franchise, which is, like… crazy, right?

Did Raimi's Oz Kill Wicked?

Some have wondered whether or not Sam Raimi’s upcoming The Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz the Great and Powerful, will effectively make the long-awaited cinematic adaptation of the Broadway hit Wicked irrelevant, for now.

The musical, which was in turn adapted from the novel of the same name, tells the life story of Oz’s iconic Wicked Witch of the West. In addition to the origins of the trickster Wizard, Raimi’s film also reveals (a version of) how the WWW came to be. So is there room for more than one version of her tale on the big screen? The answer is likely yes, particularly considering the massive popularity of the Wicked musical. It is unclear how much time will need to pass between the two films, though.

Sam Raimi Refuses to Watch The Amazing Spider-Man

Been wondering what Spider-Man director Sam Raimi thinks of The Amazing Spider-Man? Well wonder know more as the helmer went on the record about the movie over the weekend.

Speaking to TheHuffingtonPost, Raimi revealed that he hasn’t actually seen the recent reboot.

“I’m a big Marc Webb fan and a giant fan of Emma Stone,” he explained. “And of Andrew Garfield. I saw him on Broadway in Death of a Salesman; it’s just brilliant. And I love the producers of that movie because they are dear friends, and the writer. But, I haven’t had the guts to go see the movie yet. Because I don’t want to go to my girlfriend’s wedding. I just can’t bring myself to do it. I don’t have the guts.”

Wizard of Oz Meets Game of Thrones

Warner Horizon could soon be paying a visit to Oz with a new fantasy TV series called Red Brick Road.

Details are being kept under wraps according to The Hollywood Reporter, but insiders describe the concept as “a continuation of the Wizard of Oz story but told in a Game of Thrones fashion, filled with politics, intrigue and violence.”

Red Brick Road is created by artist Rob Prior, and has Mark Wolper, Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh set to executive produce. The project has no connection to Disney’s upcoming Sam Raimi movie, Oz the Great and Powerful.

Franco Not Impressed With Spidey Reboot

Last summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man was commercially successful, but met with a mixed response from critics and, to some degree, fans, many of whom couldn’t get past the fact that the reboot retread so much territory covered by Sam Raimi‘s earlier trilogy.

Well, one of the stars of those previous Spidey films, James Franco, shares those less than enthusiastic feelings. Here’s what he had to say to MTV about the reboot and the re-casting of his character, Harry Osborn, for its upcoming sequel:
