Surface RT can help small businesses reduce IT costs

Microsoft caved to market pressure and sagging demand this week by slashing the price of the Surface RT tablet by 30 percent. The Surface RT is better-equipped for business than rival tablets, and at $350 ( $470 once you add a Touch or Type keyboard cover, which it requires to be truly functional) it straddles the line between tablet and PC, and could help business customers rein in IT costs.

The Surface RT isn’t for everyone. It can’t run traditional Windows software, so businesses or users that depend on specific applications or custom software can’t just toss out their PC and use a Surface RT. For a variety of use cases, however, a device with email, Web access, and Microsoft Office is sufficient.

The Surface RT can replace a Windows PC for many users.

The Surface RT includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. With Windows 8.1, the Surface RT also gets Outlook, and Microsoft just updated the OneNote MX app to allow it to connect to Office 365 accounts. Microsoft has also made many of its tools available across iOS and Android, but the integration of the Surface RT with Microsoft software and services sets it apart from other mobile devices as a business tool.

It’s true a business can supply users with standard Windows laptops—with the full Windows operating system, more internal storage, a real keyboard, and possibly a DVD or Blu-Ray drive—for roughly the same money. But when it comes to weight and battery life, no $500 laptop can come close to what the Surface RT has to offer.

IGN Hangouts Presents: Evil Dead

Hail to the King, baby! For years the cult phenomenon that is Evil Dead has slashed its way into every medium possible. We’ve seen Deadites hacked up in games, movies, comics and musicals (yes, Evil Dead has a musical). So when we heard they were remaking the original, fans were equal parts excited and worried.

Thankfully, the remake breathed new life into the franchise with a fantastic re-imagining of the series. IGN’s own Chris Tilly called it “every bit as good as Sam Raimi’s originals” and said it was “A terrifying, exhilarating and relentlessly entertaining new chapter in the Evil Dead story.” You can check out our video review below.

If you haven’t seen the movie yet (and seriously, why haven’t you?), it’s out on Blu-Ray tomorrow. In honor of the blood soaked reboot’s transition to the small screen, we’re hanging out with cast members Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas and director Fede Alvarez and asking them about the movie. But why should we have all of the fun?

New York: 2014 Dodge Durango bows with eight-speed auto, updated looks [w/video]

2014 Dodge Durango live at 2013 New York Auto Show - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

Dodge has significantly updated its full-size Durango for the 2014 model year, giving the seven-passenger hauler a fresh look and a well-rounded boost of competitive features as it enters its fourth year in the showroom.

Cosmetically, it is hard to miss the revised front end with projector-beam headlamps and LED daytime running lamps, “floating” crosshair grille, a taller front bumper and a new lower fascia. The rear end of the facelifted Durango has been redesigned with the automaker’s now-signature LED “racetrack” taillamps and resculpted rear fascia. All of the wheels are new too, with 18- and 20-inch options for each trim level with a variety of factory finishes.

Inside the cabin, buyers can select the automaker’s latest Uconnect infotainment system with a full suite of infotainment features and connectivity accessed through an 8.4-inch touchscreen. Other optional goodies include a heated steering wheel, heated second-row seating and a Blu-Ray player capable of running unique programs on the twin individual rear monitors.

Mechanically speaking, Dodge has fitted an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment to both the 3.6-liter V6 (290 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque) and the optional 5.7-liter V8 (360 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque) which should improve both performance and economy. As an added benefit, the Pentastar V6 now boasts a best-in-class driving range of more than 600 miles on one tank of fuel, but thus far, Dodge isn’t discussing much in the way of additional performance metrics, saying only that the Pentastar should get 25 miles per gallon on the highway cycle.

We’ve only touched the tip of the iceberg in terms of new features, so scroll down to watch an official video and see the full press release for all of the details.

PS4: Sony Sees a Disc-Based Future

Sony’s Jim Ryan has told IGN that Blu-Ray discs will still be the PlayStation 4’s dominant delivery mechanism for games, despite a wider move towards a more connected console.

Sony has upped its game in the digital distribution field over the past year or two with the PS3, delivering games to PSN day-and-date with their retail releases (although still at full RRP, which in Europe especially is often far in excess of the price you can expect to pay in a shop.) But although Sony Computer Entertainment Europe‘s president and CEO sees the trend towards digital downloads continuing, he still sees a primarily disc-based future for the console.

“Clearly, and this applies not just to games but to pretty much every form of entertainment, there is a trend to increased digital consumption, and that is happening now on PS3 and will continue and will probably accelerate on PS4,” he told IGN. “But the primary delivery mechanism for the big games on the PS4 platform will continue to be Blu-Ray discs, for the foreseeable future.”

Netflix offers Super HD streaming to Cablevision, Gogle Fiber users

Netflix is bumping up the quality of many of its instant streaming titles to what it calls Super HD, but you won’t be able to enjoy it unless you are with one of two U.S. Internet service providers.

Super HD is basically Netflix’s branding for 1080p full HD content. It requires at least 5Mb/s download speeds, or 7Mb/s for the highest available video quality. It works with Netflix on PlayStation 3, Nintendo’s Wii U, Windows 8, Roku, Apple TVs with 1080p, and certain smart TVs and Blu-Ray players.

The big caveat with Netflix Super HD is that in the U.S., you will only be able to enjoy full HD streaming if you are with Cablevision or Google Fiber. The two providers are part of Netflix Open Connect, a content delivery network meant to improve video streaming from the service. No other U.S. provider is currently part of it.

Outside the U.S., Netflix Super HD will also be available in the U.K. from most major providers, including Virgin Media and British Telecom, and globally from the likes of Telmex, Telus, TDC and GVT, totaling more than 25 million streaming subscribers.
