Color patterns in fish larvae may reveal relationships among species

Similarities in how different organisms look can indicate a close evolutionary relationship. Conversely, great differences in appearance can suggest a very distant relationship, as in many adult marine fish species. For the first time, however, a Smithsonian scientist has found that color patterns of different fish species in the larval stage can be very similar, revealing a closer evolutionary relationship than their adult forms would suggest. The research is published in the July issue of the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society. …read more

‘Catfish: The TV Show’: Dorion Has Two Girlfriends, One Real And One A ‘Catfish’ (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Things were certainly more complicated than usual on the latest episode of “Catfish: The TV Show.” Dorion took center stage, and he was juggling two relationships. For the past two years, he’d had an online relationship with Jeszica. He started also seeing a girl named Raffinee six months ago. By seeing, we mean he had a face-to-face relationship with her. Raffinee knew about Jeszica, but she didn’t like it one bit.

It turned out, as one might have expected, that Jeszica wasn’t who she claimed to be. Instead, it was a normal-looking, pretty girl named Alexis. She also happened to have the dubious honor of having the “most faked profiles” on the Internet. She said that she made the profile Dorion connected with five years ago, back when she “was young.” She’d even given Jeszica a fake child.

“That was just my way of meeting new people, and talking to people,” she explained. “We ran into each other, and I just couldn’t stop that.”

Diesel Says Marvel Role Has "Love Story"

You put Vin Diesel in a Marvel movie and the box office breaks, right? I mean, that’s gotta be what Marvel boss Kevin Feige is thinking with all this talk about Diesel joining a Marvel film as… somebody.

But if it happens, who will he play? Nobody is talking, but Diesel himself continues to drop hints about the role. Here’s what he told EW at Comic-Con this past weekend.

“Marvel was excited about bring

a different kind of relationship, a different kind of love story, I guess kind of inspired from the Dom-Letty relationship, into the Marvel universe,” the actor says. Dom-Letty, of course, refers to his and Michelle Rodriguez’ characters from the Fast and the Furious franchise.

Give Your Agency The 'Out-Of-Scope Challenge'

By Will Burns, Contributor

Most agencies get into trouble when it comes to “scope issues.” They either agree to do extra work for a client that was not part of the original scope-of-work and lose money, or they refuse to do something that is out-of-scope without incremental fees and risk damaging their relationship with the client. So I’d like to challenge all of you clients out there to challenge your agencies, but in a way that makes for mutual-marketing satisfaction. …read more

Natalia Vodianova's Having a Ball . . . and You're Invited!

By Randy Miller

Consider this your ticket to Natalia Vodianova’s ultraexclusive annual soiree: the Love Ball (and what better way to be invited than with Grace Kelly imagery and the grand beating of drums, might we add?). In a first-look video, the philanthropic model revealed plans for her July 27 Naked Heart Foundation benefit with all the pomp and circumstance that can be expected of a gala.

Telling Harper’s Bazaar of the Monte Carlo destination for her auction, dinner, and night at the casino, “We chose it for the interesting relationship this part of the world, the Riviera, has with Russia.” The location will not only shape the guest list – Princess Charlene and Prince Albert have been involved in the planning – but also the items up for bid: “This year, we have the story of a couple, in love, who are traveling to Monaco for the weekend. Everything we auction will be things that they would do.”

With a royal guest list slated to attend and memories of the last Love Ball in 2011, there will definitely be something to look out for the morning after, even if you don’t have an actual ticket for the opulent affair!

Rolling Stone And The Bomber Suspect: What Media Coverage Has Missed

By Cheryl Conner, Contributor

I swore I wasn’t going to weigh in on this topic. But longtime online marketing expert Barbara Ling gave me several good reasons to reconsider (one of them being that she offered me an image that didn’t further perpetuate the suspect’s controversial face.)   I’ve known Barbara since the days I used to pitch her as a press authority on Internet recruiting back in the days my agency represented FlipDog (later acquired by Monster.com). She’s a 17-year “soloprenuer” who, in addition to Internet recruiting, specializes in what she refers to as “in-the-trenches” online marketing via social media. A mother of four, she focuses on demystifying social media for emerging businesses. Barbara and I share a love of marketing and of entrepreneurs. We have no business relationship together, but as time progresses, perhaps that will change. Barbara pointed out to me that in the fallout over the July 17 Rolling Stone Magazine that unless you’ve been living under a stone, you realize features a photo of the Boston Bombing Suspect Dzhokhar Tsamaev. The consumer world reacted, primarily with outrage. CVS and Walgreens both refused the carry the issue, as Forbes’ Matthew Herper reported last week. But here’s the surprise Barbara brought to my attention: Within 24 hours, a Facebook site emerged with the headline “Boycott Rolling Stone Magazine For Their Latest Cover.” The message on the page: “Rolling Stone announced its new cover today, featuring the Boston Bomber.  This is unacceptable and a slap in the face for those he killed and maimed.” The site garnered more than 100,000 “Likes” in its first 24 hours. That’s the equivalent of 4169 “likes” an hour, 69 “Likes” a minute and a “like” every 6/7 of a second. So what’s even bigger about this? It’s the very structure of Facebook sharing that makes such a rabid and viral uprising possible and actually fuels its growth. When a Facebook user “Likes” a page, the “Like” generally shows up (unless you’ve active prohibited it) in that individual’s feed, allowing everyone in his or her network to see it as well. Fueling the viral mania fire even further, many media outlets and Facebook users also “hashtagged” their posts with the cryptic message of #Boycott and #RollingStone, helping to spur even more sharing via Facebook’s new Open Graph Search. This phenomena results in more users and more Facebook viewers being polarized to one side or the other. Grass roots Facebook campaigns are nothing new. In May, Women, Action and the Media was able to persuade advertisers to pull their ads in protest of “rape joke” pages on Facebook. In the face of the mountain of infuriated users, Facebook re-thought its position and the pages came down. Once a controversial passion has been ignited on Facebook to this extent it becomes virtually unstoppable, Barbara says, but here is the powerful takeaway she urges small business to note:  The Facebook community can make or break a brand’s appeal. Therefore, businesses must be highly mindful to ensure their social media interactions increase, …read more

Salesforce.com updates mobile Chatter app with eye on productivity

Salesforce.com will soon roll out the fourth version of its mobile Chatter application, an update that gives users of the collaboration software more ways to view, retrieve and write back data to the core CRM (customer relationship management) system.

One key new feature will give Chatter mobile users the ability to edit Salesforce.com records, such as customer-service cases or sales leads, from their devices, rather than only being able to read such records.

In addition, Salesforce.com dashboards a user might look at in the main CRM application will now also be available in Chatter mobile.

The third major feature, Custom Actions, allows administrators to create new workflows, such as for an inventory request or to approve a job candidate, and embed them in the Chatter mobile interface.

Inside e-ployment: Online staffing services put temporary labor within reach of small businesses

Never mind all the stories about unemployment. American businesses are still clamoring for workers. They just may not need them for a full 40-hour week.

”Temps” have long been the go-to solution for businesses that need extra hands during busy production cycles or for special projects. In the old days, when you needed temporary help, you had one real option: The temp agency. Temporary staffing agencies—which are still around, mind you—might specialize in administrative workers (to handle that filing project that no one else wanted to touch) or hook you up with programmers or project managers (for more complicated, but temporary, projects). Either way, the relationship was generally between you (the employer) and the temp agency. You often had limited control over who came to work on Monday morning and even less over how much they got paid. The agency controlled the relationship, taking the employee’s fee and excising a healthy cut before passing the remainder on to the worker as a salary.

This system worked for years. Many temps were happy to bounce from job to job, much like substitute teachers, waiting for the call as to where they’d report the following day for work. And many temp agencies treated their workers as regular employees, withholding taxes and sometimes even offering benefits.

But that model isn’t proving sustainable. The deep cuts temp agencies take—up to half of a worker’s take-home pay—means most temps can’t make much of a living with irregular work. Meanwhile, employers are increasingly on the hunt for deeply qualified individuals with specialized skills. Those individuals may be located anywhere in the world—and willing to work for much less than previously imagined.

Christy Turlington Strips Down (Again) For Calvin Klein

By Robert Khederian

Calvin Klein Underwear has revealed its latest star. The iconic underwear label tapped Christy Turlington Burns – whose relationship with the brand began on the runway in 1987 – to appear in its Fall 2013 campaign, photographed by Mario Sorrenti.

“It was great shooting with Mario,” Turlington Burns said. “We have worked together before, but never for Calvin Klein, and both of us have had a long history with the brand, so it’s kind of nice to have a first experience with him and Calvin Klein.”

The images, which were shot in Vieques, Puerto Rico, identify with Calvin Klein Underwear‘s signature minimalist, sophisticated, yet still provocative aesthetic. The campaign is set to be released gradually in August, and you can expect a flood of images to grace the September issues. Until then, here’s a look at the first few photographs from the campaign.

Comic-Con: Marvel's Captain America 2, Guardians Press Conference

Marvel Studios brought two big upcoming projects to its San Diego Comic-Con Press Conference on Saturday: Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy.

First up was the Cap conference, which included stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Emily VanCamp, Frank Grillo, Cobie Smulders, as well as directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo.

During the Q&A, Evans explained a little bit about what Steve Rogers has been up to since joining The Avengers and how he’s grown from film to film. “In the first Captain America, it’s about giving

the opportunity to serve, the opportunity to be a soldier. In The Avengers, you have so many other characters and all these establishments and relationships, and you can’t really dive too deeply into any one character. In this movie, it’s about showing Cap, now given the ability to give up himself, the question now becomes ‘Well, what’s right?’ It’s not just about doing the right thing, it’s what is the right thing… It’s not black and white, it’s gray, and I think that’s where his relationship with Black Widow comes to fruition… Something happens, and as a result, these two people from different worlds need to rely on one another.”

Science And The Anti-Liberty Crowd

By Spiritof76

al gore settled science 300x200 Science and The Anti Liberty Crowd

One of the things fundamental to science is establishing categories and their clear definitions.  In that spirit, I group all the socialists, the communists, the dictators, and the progressives into the anti-liberty crowd.  There may be differences among them in terms of degree of collectivist oppression, but they are all arrayed against the founding documents of our country.

The anti-liberty crowd has been very vocal about how they are guided by science.  They have accused the US of promoting a scientifically unsustainable lifestyle of gluttony of energy and food at the expense of other countries. They promote their top-down policies through the so-called anthropogenic global warming hoax.  They have declared that our founding documents are backwards and not suitable for the current high technology environment.

Their climb to power through their declared scientific affinity started with Woodrow Wilson claiming that our Constitution was modeled on outdated Newtonian physics, while Darwinian Theory was being touted at more appropriate.  He wanted to get rid of separation of powers and checks and balances under that pretext that they were impediments to his collectivist vision.  The anti-liberty crowd then advocated eugenics to eliminate the “weak” races for the good of humanity.  Margaret Sanger used the twisted interpretation of the science of the day to set up Planned Parenthood to reduce the “inferior” Negro race.  The anti-Liberty crowd in Russia and China wanted to modernize agriculture by establishing scientifically superior collectives and command and control economies.  Millions perished under Stalin and Mao. The anti-Liberty crowd chalked that up as an incidental damage necessary for a superior end.

They are now promoting the “renewable” energy, unlimited abortion blurring the infanticide boundary, and gay “marriage,” destroying the family unit necessary for the ideals of founding principles to endure.  Each one of those can be shown to be anti-scientific.

The solar and wind energy (or the “renewable” energy) can never economically replace the conventional sources of energy because the former sources are diffused when they need to be highly concentrated.  Electrical energy cannot be stored at levels that are practical.  No amount of taxpayer subsidy can replace the “renewables” as an alternative to the conventional sources.  Just ask yourself this question: If wind power is so great, how come the sailing ships gave way to steam power with coal, oil, and nuclear energy sources?

Since the Progressives claim to be followers of the Darwinian theory of evolution, with natural selection underpinning it to perpetuate the species, how could they forego its consistency when it comes to the promotion of homosexual relationships on par with the naturally-favored heterosexual relationship?  They say that the theory of creationism was unsupported by science; and yet, they promote homosexuality as value-equivalent.  How can there be a homosexual marriage when it can never be consummated?  Biologically, anatomically, and emotionally, the male and female of the species have evolved to maximize perpetuation of the human race.  Homosexuality cannot be supported on a scientific basis.

How about abortion and the anti-Liberty crowd’s staunch support of it, unlimited right up to birth?  Prior to the advent of the Sonogram, they characterized the developing human life in the womb as an accumulation …read more
