London Marathon will go forward as planned despite Boston bombing

Determined to show solidarity with Boston, the London Marathon will go forward as planned Sunday with a race that will be watched by about 1 million spectators and take runners past some of the city’s most revered landmarks.

The British capital has long been a target for terrorists, and concerns have only intensified after Monday’s harrowing scenes at the Boston Marathon. Two bombs killed three people and injured more than 170.

After high-level talks with police and authorities, organizers on Tuesday confirmed that the London Marathon will proceed while acknowledging that a race of more than 26 miles that traverses a city cannot be entirely without risk.

“One of the great things about these marathons is that they are free and available to the public — that’s why we have hundreds of thousands of people come out and watch them,” Nick Bitel, chief executive of the London Marathon, told The Associated Press by phone. “I can’t see how that is going to change.

“It’s part of the whole ethos of what a mass-participation marathon is about. What one has to do is make appropriate and reasonable security measures in light of the threats and that’s what we’ll be doing on Sunday.”

Prince Harry, the patron of the London Marathon Charitable Trust, will attend the race and make the presentations to the winners from the field of 36,550 runners.

“We won’t be cowered by this sort of behavior,” said British Sports Minister Hugh Robertson, who hailed the country’s security forces as “the best anywhere in the world.”

“The best way for us to react is to push ahead with the marathon on Sunday, to get people on the streets and to celebrate it as we always do in London. These are balance of judgments but we are absolutely confident here that we can keep the event safe and secure. I think this is one of those incidents where the best way to show solidarity with Boston is to continue and send a very clear message to those responsible.”

Mo Farah, Britain’s double Olympic long-distance champion, will be running a half-marathon while the three medalists from the men’s marathon at the London Games are also among the entries.

There have been no high-profile withdrawals so far, and Bitel told the AP that the agents of the top competitors have been contacted, reassured and “kept comfortable with what is happening.”

“There’s rather intense activity going on to ensure the race is safe and is carried off with the usual aplomb,” said Ed Warner, chairman of UK Athletics. “The decision at the moment is to go ahead with the race and I’m sure it is the right decision. They will cope very well with the increased demands placed on them.”

London is one of six cities in the world marathon series along with Tokyo, Boston, Berlin, Chicago and New York.

Belgrade, Serbia, is among other cities staging marathons this weekend. Organizer Dejan Nikolic is confident the race will be a “beautiful running festival.”

“We will do our best so that this year the security level is even

Prince Harry’s New Secretary Is A Public Relations Expert, Thankfully

By The Huffington Post News Editors

File this under news that should have happened a looooong time ago: Prince Harry finally hired a personal PR guy.

Well, kind of. The Telegraph reports that the party boy has just hired Edward Lane Fox, a senior associate at communications firm RLM Finsbury, as his very own private secretary. The two actually met during their military days (Fox is a former captain in the Household Cavalry) and both have ties to the Burnaby Blue Foundation, so they’ll definitely have plenty to chat about.

Harry’s new “right hand man” will join the 28-year-old’s team after his royal tour through the US in June. Not to rehash old issues, but don’t you remember what happened the last time the prince came stateside? Perhaps Harry should take up Chris Christie on his offer to babysit

HUFFPOST HILL – Supreme Court Weighs Gay Marriage, Still No White House Tours

By The Huffington Post News Editors

The Supreme Court gave no clear signal where it was headed on Proposition 8, but there was no mistaking Antonin Scalia’s beliefs about septuagenarian breeding (He’s pro.). Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says she doesn’t use email, which means we can say whatever we want about her here. And Chris Christie vowed to keep Prince Harry clothed when the British royal visits New Jersey, even though “Naked Prince” sounds like a brightly colored beverage we’ve consumed on the Shore. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Tuesday, March 26th, 2013:

GUN CONTROL: NO AGREEMENT ON BACKGROUND CHECKS – Sam Stein: “Negotiations over legislation that would extend background checks for gun buyers are still officially on. But aides on the Hill involved in those conversations said a breakthrough remains far off and discussions are unlikely to get serious for another week or so. ‘My guess is after Easter they will all start really talking because then that clock starts clicking,’ said a source close to negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity. The authors of the bill, set to head to the floor of the Senate after the Easter recess, were casting a wider net for potential Republican co-sponsors, according to a report this week. But one of those who reportedly being wooed — Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) — downplayed the report…That means center stage remains occupied by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.)… Schumer and Coburn remain at odds over two central issues — how those checks are conducted, and whether records should be kept of firearms transactions. Coburn wants new gun sales to use online portals for conducting background checks. Schumer wants a federal firearms license holder to do the work. Coburn doesn’t support keeping sales records for private transactions. Schumer has said he sees that as potentially gutting the purpose of the law.” [HuffPost]

VOTE-A-RAMA BODES ILL FOR GUN CONTROL – Sure, it was nearly four in the morning, but the world’s greatest deliberative body wasn’t afraid to make decisions about firearms. Roll Call: “Senators voted 50-49 in favor of an amendment by Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, to establish a two-thirds requirement for the passage of any gun control legislation in their chamber. While the budget resolution is nonbinding and the amendment did not win the 60 votes needed to be adopted, the outcome underscores how many senators strongly support gun rights, just as the chamber prepares to debate the biggest package of gun control measures in nearly two decades. Six Democrats from gun-friendly states joined a nearly united Republican conference to support Lee’s amendment: Max Baucus of Montana, Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Kay Hagan of North Carolina, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Manchin III of West Virginia and Mark Pryor of Arkansas.” [Roll Call]

Sam Branson, Isabella Calthorpe Wedding Features Royal Guests & A Monique Lhuillier Dress (PHOTO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

We get pretty excited about royal weddings — seriously. But what about those long lulls in which not a single noble ties the knot? Thankfully, we have society weddings to hold us over.

Sir Richard Branson‘s son Sam Branson wed Isabella Calthorpe last week in South Africa during a five-day fête chock full of royals and celebs. The extravagant activity roster — which included costume parties, safaris and bongo lessons — earned the event the nickname “the nearly royal wedding.”

Unlike a royal wedding, however, Hello! magazine was on the guest lists to report on all of the aforementioned celebrations. In case you’re not so familiar with British society circles, the bride is an actress, daughter to a *real* Lady Mary and half sister to Prince Harry’s latest flame Cressida Bonas. Oh, and she’s that infamous girl who got away from Prince William (he courted her during the on-again-off-again phase of his relationship with Kate Middleton).

UK's Prince Harry returns from Afghanistan

Britain’s Ministry of Defense says Prince Harry is returning from a 20-week deployment in Afghanistan, where he served as an Apache helicopter pilot with the Army Air Corps.

The 28-year-old prince was stationed at Camp Bastion, a sprawling British base in the southern Afghan desert. Known as Capt. Wales in the military, Harry flew scores of missions as a co-pilot gunner, sometimes firing rockets and missiles at Taliban fighters.

Harry’s second tour in Afghanistan went more smoothly than the first, in 2007-2008, which was cut short after 10 weeks when a magazine and websites disclosed details of his whereabouts.

British media had agreed to a news blackout on security grounds.
