Tackling the Expanded Universe: How Dark Horse Remains the Best and Brightest

By Jen Bosier, Contributor

Expanded Universes are big business for video games. Ever since Karen Traviss’ “Gears of War” novels reached the New York Times Best Sellers List, and the “Mass Effect” comic series developed a huge following, more and more video game franchises are branching out into transmedia offerings. These offerings are at their best when they serve to expand upon established events and characters from the game world, giving us a deeper look at what went on behind the scenes. When it comes to video game-based comics and art books, one publisher stands out above and beyond: Dark Horse. Since its founding in 1986, Mike Richardson and crew have sought to shine a light on the expanded universe in a big way. …read more

Hemsworth Teams with Mann for New Thriller

Director Michael Mann will soon be helming a new untitled thriller from Legendary Pictures. Chris Hemsworth is set to star in the feature, which will be Mann’s first since 2009’s Public Enemies.

According to Variety, the filmmaker has been developing the project for over a year alongside co-writer Morgan Davis Foehl, who is also working on the studio’s Mass Effect movie. Little is known about the story other than it has to do with “cyber threats and attacks.”

In addition to Mann’s thriller, Hemsworth is currently attached to Warner Bros.’ adventure film In the Heart of the Sea, which Ron Howard is currently eyeing.

Look: The Killing Joke's Joker Statue

My eyes were unable to properly handle the overflowing amount of epicness at Kotobukiya’s Toy Fair 2013 showroom. DC fans are sure to be pleased with the variety of pricey collectibles they’ve got in the pipeline — including the stunning ARTFX+ statues for the New 52 Justice League and a fantastic Joker statue inspired by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s Batman: The Killing Joke. They also have plans for a Superman statue inspired by Superman: For Tomorrow, a Black Canary piece and even one for the best mercenary ever, Deathstroke.

Kotobukiya’s certainly not leaving Marvel fans in the dust, though. They’re working on a set of ARTFX+ statues based on Marvel NOW!’s The Avengers. And to top it off, they’re being crafted under the art direction of amazingly talented illustrator Adi Granov (best Iron Man artist ever?). Additionally, there was a superb Venom and Spider-Man statue on display, a Jim Lee inspired Cyclops (oh, how I miss the ’90s) and a highly detailed Daredevil. As if that wasn’t enough, there’re more sweet collectibles of Star Wars characters, Isaac Clarke from Dead Space 3 (where he’s of course stomping like a boss) and a few from Mass Effect 3. Check out the images from the showroom below…

BioWare: Don't Think of it as Mass Effect 4

Calling the next instalment in Bioware’s Science Fiction saga Mass Effect 4 isn’t really fair or representative of the project.

This is the opinion of Bioware’s Community Manager Chris Priestly, who took to Bioware’s forums (via Eurogamer) to say:

“To call the next game Mass Effect 4 or ME4 is doing it a disservice and seems to cause a lot of confusion here. We have already said that the Commander Shepard trilogy is over and that the next game will not feature him/her. That is the only detail you have on the game. I see people saying ‘well, they’ll have to pick a canon ending’. No, because the game does not have to come after. Or before. Or off to the side. Or with characters you know. Or yaddayaddayadda. Wherever, whenever, whoever, etc will all be revealed years down the road when we actually start talking about it.

American McGee’s latest PC offering, Akaneiro: Demon Hunters — which is currently raising funds on Kickstarter — is getting its very own comic book mini-series courtesy of Dark Horse Comics, also known for their other successful comic book/video game tie-ins like Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

Written by Justin Aclin with art by Vasilis Lolos, Akaneiro #1 is the first of three issues to explore American McGee’s re-imagining of the Red Riding Hood legend within Japanese folklore.

Dark Horse was kind enough to provide us with the first look at the first cover for the series and some character design sketches:

Adventures in Tragic Backstory: 'Mass Effect: Paragon Lost' Review

By Jen Bosier, Contributor Most fans of the “Mass Effect” series agreed that Lt. James Vega was a woefully flat character, seemingly added to Shepard’s motley crew for no other reason than to add a celebrity voice cameo. Vega had some interesting nuggets of observation for Shepard, and was playful with femSheps, but overall, he felt like a walking tragic backstory.

2012: A Miserable Year for Gamers

2012 was a miserable year for gamers. Not because the Wii U didn’t hit with quite the bang we were hoping for. Not because the PS Vita failed to find a healthy audience. Not even because Mass Effect 3 didn’t quite stick its landing. Instead, 2012 was a miserable year for gamers because developers are perfecting the art of making us feel that way – and it’s a good thing.

While there are always exceptions, the emotions and feelings elicited by games tend to skew towards the more superficial end of the spectrum. Happiness and relief at making it through a tough level. Fear of creepy crawlies in a survival-horror game. The joy of discovery and exploration. Likewise, stories and themes dealt with in games usually tend to be bombastic, in the made-for-TV action movie sense of the word. Gameplay aside, most games offer fairly hollow emotional experiences; ones easily forgotten once the adrenaline rush recedes.

Opinion: Games As Art – Another Perspective

As the ‘Hollywood’ era of the video game pushes our hobby further and further into the public consciousness, there’s a tendency within our community to champion the idea of games as ‘growing up’ – gaining the ability to be something serious, something meaningful or productive, something that can rival the cultural importance of film or literature.

Games are increasingly regarded as worthwhile relative to how well they can match or exceed the proficiencies of older media. Gaming magazines, blogs and websites regularly point to modern games telling grand sweeping narratives in Mass Effect, exploring deeply emotional themes in Braid and political themes in Spec Ops: The Line, provoking legitimate aesthetic responses in millions of people daily. The aspects of graphical fidelity, sound design, dialogue and rhetorical messaging are also well-discussed in terms of whether a game is progressively worthwhile.

The year in tech: Biggest fails, flops, and faux pas

The conclusion to the Mass Effect video game trilogy was supposed to be a grand payoff—a culmination of all the game-changing decisions players had made throughout the series. What players got instead was a lame choose-your-own-path ending, one that didn’t seem to take into account players’ previous actions at all, and the
    backlash from fans
was severe. Bioware, the developer of the series, tried to placate players with
supplemental ending materials, but the rage had already boiled over, damaging the reputations of both Bioware and publisher Electronic Arts, and tarnishing a series that is otherwise a masterstroke of big-budget game design.
