It’s safe to say that, for the most part, Sony succeeded with its eagerly awaited announcement of PlayStation 4. With approximately 1,200 invited guests in attendance at New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom, Sony held sway over the room for over two hours, showing feature after feature of its new console. But the features didn’t fully steal the show, nor occupy a majority of the time Sony spent with the press. No, the games did.

Sure, we’ve seen some of these games before: Watch Dogs, Diablo III and Destiny are certainly nothing new. But we also saw brand new exclusives from Sony, exclusives that prove that the company is willing to continue to lean on the studios it owns to create unique content only available on PlayStation. With a next-generation hurtling at us that seems intent to suggest that everything other than games matter, this is important. And with the closure of three of its studios over the last year and subpar sales of many of its own properties, there was some question as to Sony’s continued commitment to “the exclusive,” something that in times past helped set it apart from the competition. But for better or for worse, that doubt has all but dissipated.
