Video: Snake and Mongoose is this summer's other motorsports movie

By Brandon Turkus

Dragster on a run in Snake & Mongoose.

Filed under:

Rush is the Formula One epic that everyone in the auto industry is talking about, thanks to its A-list director and star actor (Ron Howard and Chris Hemsowrth, respectively). But just because Rush has Opie Taylor and Thor involved, doesn’t mean it’ll be the only racing movie of the year.

There’s another flick, and we’ve covered it before. It’s called Snake & Mongoose, and it’s about as far removed from F1 as possible. It’s theatrical trailer has just hit the internet, and we thought you’d like a look.

Starring Jesse Williams and Richard Blake, Snake & Mongoose tells the story of a pair of southern California drag racers that revolutionized the sport, both in terms of their rivalry and the way they marketed themselves. See that Hot Wheels dragster sitting on your desk? You can thank these two guys for it.

The production value doesn’t look quite as impressive as Rush, but the story looks every bit as gripping. Snake & Mongoose hits theaters on September 6. Click below for the full trailer.

Tom Riddle, Q Join Ron Howard's Next

Oscar-winning director Ron Howard has lined up a cast of familiar genre movie faces for his next film, In the Heart of the Sea. Namely, Thor, Scarecrow, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Mad-Eye Mooney, and now Q from Skyfall and Tom Riddle from Harry Potter.

Potter actor Frank Dillane is in negotiations to join the cast, while the filmmakers are also eying Skyfall and Cloud Atlas actor Ben Whishaw for a role.

They’d join a cast that already includes Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Benjamin Walker and Brendan Gleeson. Tom Holland and Sam Keeley also star.

In the Heart of the Sea is based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s book about the ill-fated whaleship Essex. The ship left Nantucket for the South Pacific in 1819, where it was attacked by an angry sperm whale. But it was what transpired after that — when the survivors were adrift at sea for months and resorted to cannibalism — that is just as frightening as the attack that inspired Herman Melville to write Moby Dick. Hemsworth would play the first mate.

Video: Ron Howard's Rush gets second trailer in a week

By Seyth Miersma

Filed under:

In this, second and latest installment of trailers for the upcoming Ron Howard movie, Rush, we get a glimpse of how Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl will handle there respective roles as Hunt and Lauda. Yes, it seems there may actually be a bit of acting tossed in between racing in the rain, escaping fiery crashes and the like.

Perhaps more important (you know, as far as second trailers for movies that are five months away can be “important”), is the chance to catch the lovely leading ladies for a moment. Natalie Dormer, Olivia Wilde, Joséphine de La Baume and Alexandra Maria Lara all take turns taking our breath away. Enjoy the (longer) trailer, below.

Ron Howard’s New Movie, Rush, Recreates One of F1′s Greatest Driver Battles—Lauda vs. Hunt

By Alexander Stoklosa

Niki Lauda Rush movie trailer

As F1 racing stages a comeback here in the States—this season it’s on NBC Sports, not to mention the new track down in Austin, Texas—along comes a movie about the sport that could move it closer to the forefront of the public’s mind. From none other than director Ron Howard comes a new flick, Rush, about the epic 1976 driver battle between Niki Lauda and James Hunt for the Formula 1 world championship. Now, we’re a lot better suited for reviewing cars than movies, but based on the trailer for Rush, it’s looking like a must-see for any race fan.

Hunt is played by Chris Hemsworth and Lauda by Daniel Brühl, while Olivia Wilde and Natalie Dormer also are in the mix. The ’76 season was characterized by Hunt and Lauda’s on-track rivalry, which at one point saw Lauda nearly killed at the Nürburgring. We’re just spitballing here, but our bet is that with detail-oriented Ron Howard at its helm, Rush should be far better to watch than the only other non-documentary open-wheel racing movie in recent (we reiterate, recent) memory, Driven. That movie had Sylvester Stallone in a lead role, so, yeah. It will be interesting to see whether Rush turns out better than 2010′s Senna, the excellent documentary that chronicled the life and premature death of F1 prodigy Ayrton Senna. Check the trailer out for yourself below and let us know what you think in the comments section:

Filed under:

The story of the 1975 Formula One World Championship – and the rivalry cum friendship between Niki Lauda and James Hunt that lies at its core - is one step closer to making its Hollywood splash. The first theatrical trailer of Rush has cropped up on YouTube, and it’s safe to say that we’re more excited than ever to watch the movie when it hits theaters on September 20.

Based on some of the cuts we see here – Lauda’s infamous crash at the Nürburgring and a dark and sodden start to the 1976 Japanese Gran Prix – it appears that no effect expense was spared to make the Ron Howard film as convincing as possible. Should performances from Daniel Brühl and Chris Hemsworth stand up, Rush could be more than just a diversion for hardcore racing fans. Follow on below for the official trailer.

Willow Blu-ray Review

By Chris Carle

It doesn’t feel possible that 25 years has passed since Willow graced the silver screen, but life on Earth rumbles on even as the world of Willow stays mystically fixed in that sweet spot between the low-grade practical effects of its forebears and the CG-rich rich world of Peter Jackson’s LOTR and Hobbit films.  Released in 1988, Willow still stands among the biggest fantasy epics undertaken, and sports quite a pedigree: George Lucas‘ reputation is universally known as creator of Star Wars, and Ron Howard has had a long, fruitful and storied career, especially as a director. That they came together for a shining moment in the twilight of the 80s is a cinematic gift.

When a mysterious baby (The Chosen One… gasp!) washes up on the shores of Willow Ufgood‘s village, the Nelwyn (short person) must go on a quest to deliver the baby to the nearest Daikini (tall person). Of course, it’s never that easy. When he meets a Daikini it’s not the respectable sort of fellow he was hoping for.  Instead, it’s Madmartigan, a warrior without a sword, a horse, a castle or an army. The two form an unlikely alliance and soon must square off against forces of black magic and evil in their quest to keep the baby safe.

What Does The Sequester Mean For The Auto Industry? Meh, Not Much

Tomorrow’s the big day: it’s Ron Howard‘s birthday (he’ll be 59), the anniversary of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping, and the day that the 2013 Sequestration goes into effect. What does that mean for America’s auto industry? Probably not much — for now. As you might’ve heard, the Sequestration is a series of across-the-board budget cuts to federal… …read more

According to Variety, the filmmaker has been developing the project for over a year alongside co-writer Morgan Davis Foehl, who is also working on the studio’s Mass Effect movie. Little is known about the story other than it has to do with “cyber threats and attacks.”

In addition to Mann’s thriller, Hemsworth is currently attached to Warner Bros.’ adventure film In the Heart of the Sea, which Ron Howard is currently eyeing.

Hemsworth, Howard May Head Out to Sea

It looks like Chris Hemsworth may reunite with Ron Howard, the director of the forthcoming racer biopic Rush, for another fact-based film.

Vulture reports that Warner Bros. has offered the directing reins of In the Heart of the Sea to Howard. The project has had Chris Hemsworth attached to star since the summer.

Howard’s also circling the big screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book and the drama All I’ve Got, but as Vulture points out “both of those are projects that lack developed scripts and top on-screen talent that’s attached and ready to shoot. In the Heart of the Sea has both (it is written by Blood Diamond’s Charles Leavitt) and so would be a far more near-term project for Howard, all the more so now that Warner Bros. is stepping in to finance the picture, which we hear could go into production later this fall.”

Ron Howard to Direct Gaiman's Graveyard Book

Henry Selick’s loss appears to be Ron Howard‘s gain.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-winning Da Vinci Code filmmaker is in negotiations to direct the feature adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book.

The Graveyard Book was planned as an animated movie to be helmed by Selick, but the project fell apart last year. “In a new twist, Graveyard now has been reconfigured as a live-action movie,” claims the trade.
