Halo Goes Ongoing at Dark Horse

One of the bigger announcements to come out of C2E2 this past spring was the news that Dark Horse Comics has acquired the rights to the Halo franchise. The new arrangement kicks off next month with the release of Halo: Initiation #1. Initiation is a prequel mini-series to Halo 4, focusing on Sarah Palmer as she works her way up the ranks of the new Spartan-IV program.

But the Halo universe is too big for one mini-series. Accordingly, Dark Horse revealed the next stage of their Halo plans at SDCC yesterday. Halo: Escalation is a new series that picks up where Halo 4 left off. Escalation also has the distinction of being the first ongoing Halo comic book. The series will again star Spartan Palmer, as well as Thomas Lasky, the Arbiter, and various other Halo mainstays. The book will be written by Halo 4 lead writer Chris Schlerf. Omar Francia (Mass Effect) will provide interior art for the first three-issue story arc, while Anthony Palumbo (Dragon Age) is handling the cover art.

Dark Horse Explores the New Tomb Raider

Lara Croft returned to the forefront of the gaming industry earlier this year with the release of Square-Enix’s Tomb Raider reboot. The game offered a new take on Lara’s formative years, presenting a more realistic and inexperienced take on the gaming icon. The only question now is how long gamers have to wait for a sequel.

While SDCC held no direct news on that front, at least fans will soon have another outlet to turn to for adventures set within this rebooted universe. Dark Horse will be publishing an ongoing Tomb Raider series starting next year. The big news is the writer they’ve chosen to flesh out Ms. Croft – Gail Simone. Simone is famous for her critically acclaimed runs on Wonder Woman and Birds of Prey and her current Batgirl series. She also recently took charge of another popular female adventurer with Dynamite’s relaunched Red Sonja comic.

Dark Horse Continues the Terminator Saga

You have to hand it to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800. He promised he’d be back, and it seems the fleshy heroes and robotic villains of the Terminator franchise will never stay down for good. There’s finally some real progress on Terminator 5, which could begin filming early next ear and see Schwarzenegger reprise his iconic role.

But if you’re hoping for a direct follow-up to the fourth movie, Terminator Salvation, there’s still hope. One of the bigger announcements to come from SDCC today was the news that Dark Horse are moving forward with their latest Terminator project. Titled Terminator: The Final Battle, this 12-issue maxi-series picks up where Salvation left off and explores the continued evolution of Skynet and its Terminators as the war with John Connor’s Resistance escalates.

Dark Horse Chronicles "The Star Wars"

Dark Horse has launched a number of new Star Wars comics in 2013, including Brian Wood‘s post-Episode IV-era Star Wars and Gabriel Hardman’s Star Wars Legacy sequel. But the publisher has announced a new Star Wars project that easily ranks as one of their most unexpected and unique to date. We’d almost expect this was an April Fool’s Day joke if it weren’t first revealed at WonderCon yesterday.

Dark Horse‘s newest comic is called “The Star Wars.” This eight-issue mini-series is adapted from George Lucas‘ original screenplay draft of what would eventually become the original Star Wars film we all know and love. The Star Wars features Annikin Starkiller and his family as the main characters, along with a number of other familiar elements that would be reworked in later drafts. For example, Luke Skywalker is a respected Jedi general, Han Solo is a reptilian alien, and the Sith Knights and their Death Star are the great menace to the galaxy.

Watch This Sweet Star Wars Comic Book Trailer

Last year, Dark Horse Comics published one of the best Star Wars comics of the last decade — Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison by Haden Blackman and Agustin Alessio. Early in the years of the Empire, the Rebellion is slowly gaining steam and an assassination attempt on Emperor Palpatine leaves Vader with only an upstart Imperial cadet as an ally to quell the uprising.

The series garnered much acclaim, even getting a nod in IGN’s Best of 2012 Awards for Best Comic Book Mini-Series. This April, Dark Horse will be publishing a new hardcover collection for the series and to celebrate, the publisher has put together a badass new trailer, using 3D images rendered straight from Alessio’s original interior artwork.

Tackling the Expanded Universe: How Dark Horse Remains the Best and Brightest

By Jen Bosier, Contributor

Expanded Universes are big business for video games. Ever since Karen Traviss’ “Gears of War” novels reached the New York Times Best Sellers List, and the “Mass Effect” comic series developed a huge following, more and more video game franchises are branching out into transmedia offerings. These offerings are at their best when they serve to expand upon established events and characters from the game world, giving us a deeper look at what went on behind the scenes. When it comes to video game-based comics and art books, one publisher stands out above and beyond: Dark Horse. Since its founding in 1986, Mike Richardson and crew have sought to shine a light on the expanded universe in a big way. …read more

Star Wars #1 Review

By Joey Esposito

First thing’s first: anybody concerned that this new series is going to disrupt any established Expanded Universe or movie continuity need not worry. Star Wars #1 makes it abundantly clear that Dark Horse has every intention of respecting the movie canon and merely circumventing the EU – while there are references to EU events, Star Wars #1 is simply not beholden to it. And it’s this avoidance of EU continuity and its utter embrace of the post-A New Hope mystery and anticipation that makes Star Wars #1 such a resounding joy to experience.

Set two months after the Battle of Yavin, Star Wars #1 finds Leia, Luke, and Wedge (finally, Wedge will get his due!) searching the Outer Rim for a new Rebel base. Writer Brian Wood takes a very political approach to the troubles of the Rebellion; they are struggling not only with resources – economical, physical, and emotional – but also in finding planets that are willing to join their cause. Though the destruction of the Death Star was a great victory for the Rebels, it had already done its job in displaying the true power and reach of the Empire to non-compliant star systems. Star Wars #1 sucks away a bit of the optimism that A New Hope ends with, but in that way, it’s already bridging the gap nicely between Episodes IV and V.
