Google’s earnings have provoked mixed reactions in the major news media – Google’s core search business is under threat, said the New York Times, blow-out sales increase CNET told its readers – but one inescapable conclusion is that times are tougher when users switch from desktop to mobile.

Google announces its earnings after the close on Thursday, April 18. Revenue for the March quarter is expected to be about $11 billion vs. $8.1 billion a year ago, an increase of 35% but when excluding Motorola revenue the growth rate is around 17%. EPS is expected to be $10.69 vs. $10.08, an increase of 6%.

The basic complaints come from a group of Google’s competitors and I have to admit that all of it smacks of no more than sour grapes to me. These companies have been beaten fair and square in the marketplace and now they’re trying to get the politicians to hobble Google in response.

By Tim Worstall, Contributor Google, BlackBerry, Earthlink and Red Hat have made a submission concerning the activities of “Patent Assertion Entities” or PAEs and I’m afraid that there’s a logical mistake in said submission. That mistake being that hiving off patents into a PAE is not necessarily a bad thing: indeed, standard classical economics would suggest that it’s not only a logical thing to do, it’s desirable. Google, along with BlackBerry, EarthLink and Red Hat, today appealed to the Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice to take stronger action against companies like Lodsys, Intellectual Ventures, and other “patent assertion entities” (aka patent trolls or so-called patent privateers) — companies they believe abuse patents for financial gain and are an increasing detriment to the technology industry, costing U.S. companies alone nearly $30 billion in 2011, “and $80 billion when accounting for all costs – direct and indirect.” The submission in full can be read here. …read more

Google has been talking about an innovative idea to replace passwords with jewelry — that’s right, jewelry. Actually, the enabling technology could be hidden in jewelry, such as a ring, which would perform secure cryptographic transactions that would obviate the need for the user to enter a password. Sounds very James Bond, but the technology operates similar to a Yubico key where the key is plugged into a USB port for authentication to other devices and applications. Google opened up a sort of pre-order contest for civilians (i.e., non-developers) this week for its new augmented reality headgear that should ship before the end of 2013 for $1,500 (for those with a clever enough idea.) The other significant news is that both CNET and The Verge report that “Glass will be able to connect via Bluetooth to both Android phones and the iPhone.
