Final Fantasy XIV's Jedi Mind Trick

Final? Square Enix doesn’t know the meaning of the word. That’s apparent enough from the avalanche of Final Fantasy games we’ve seen since 1987, but it’s especially true of its approach to its last MMORPG. By all accounts–including Square Enix’s–2010’s Final Fantasy XIV was an abomination, a shameful excuse for an MMORPG that couldn’t even pull off the simplest kill-and-fetch quest without tripping over itself. And so I tiptoed into this “reborn” incarnation of Eorzea with caution, fully expecting the world to crumble around me pixel by pixel. That didn’t happen. Against all odds, it was good, and I found myself reluctant to leave when the closed beta breathed its last. But was it enough to justify such a Herculean effort? I’m cautiously optimistic.

Namco Wants Tales of Catastora, Creales, Zestoria?

Namco Bandai’s Tales series is arguably the third most-popular JRPG franchise in the world (behind Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest). For nearly two decades, it’s gained a loyal following, and with 14 games so far released in the core series, it’s set to keep on growing.

That growth may come by way of three new Tales-related trademarks Namco Bandai registered for in Japan. These trademarks were found by Siliconera by way of Esuteru.

The trademarks are for Tales of Catastora, Tales of Creales, and Tales of Zestoria. It’s important to note that there are many a Namco trademark for unused Tales names (like Tales of Blessia and Tales of Floweria), so these three games may not necessarily ever happen. Nonetheless, it’s good to know that Namco has its eyes on Tales’ future.

Final Fantasy X HD Vita, PS3 Details Confirmed

Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 are coming to PlayStation 3 and Vita remastered in HD. As reported in Japan earlier this week, X and X-2 will be packaged on a single disc for PlayStation 3 players but will be sold separately on Vita.

“These games are classic fan-favorites, and we hope that new and old Final Fantasy fans can experience the world of Spira and the story of Tidus and Yuna in a brand-new light with these remastered editions,” said X and X-2 producer Yoshinori Kitase.

Final Fantasy X HD was first announced back in 2011 but has only been shown briefly since. The official announcement trailer for both games will be available next week on Monday, March 25th, but until then you can feast your eyes on the first batch of official screenshots below:

Sony Sells Off $437 Million in DeNA Stock

Capping off a tumultuous financial year, Sony has decided to sell off its shares in DeNA, the company that owns popular games portal and social network Mobage. Sony expects to gain $437 million (or 40.9 billion yen) from the sale. The shares were purchased by Japanese company Nomura Securities.

This could mark a decision by Sony to move away from mobile gaming, instead choosing to focus on the Playstation brand. Freeing up some money with this sort of sale would be a good way to go about that.

Sony revealed the PlayStation 4 last month. DeNA, meanwhile, has produced popular social games in Japan based on brands such as Final Fantasy and Infinity Blade.

Final Fantasy X HD Reappears on Vita

A number of character models have been shown off for Final Fantasy X HD on the PlayStation Vita, marking the first time the remake of the PS2 classic has been seen in over a year.

As documented by Famitsu, footage was shown at the Vita Heaven event that took place earlier today of Yuna and Tidus in action, and they’re looking pretty tasty.

While it’s nothing too substantial, it’s comforting to know that the game is still being worked on and hasn’t gone completely off the radar like a certain other Final Fantasy game we could mention.

Path of Exile: A Truly Free-To-Play ARPG

By Daniel Tack, Contributor Grinding Gear Games’ Path of Exile has a lot to offer hack and slash enthusiasts.  Blending aspects of Diablo II with concepts similar to the Final Fantasy sphere grid and Materia system, Path of Exile brings some other exciting features to the genre in the form of what can only be called “extreme” item customization and optimization.  Surprisingly enough, it succeeds at offering all of its action RPG content completely free, relying on contributions in exchange for cosmetics.

Final Fantasy All The Bravest Review

Nostalgia is a powerful thing. Especially video game nostalgia, since you have a memory of actively participating in these epic moments. I’m the one that cleared the ice cave in Final Fantasy. I’m the one that climbed the ShinRa tower in Final Fantasy VII. The Black Mage’s sprite, the battle victory fanfare… these things are part of our collective shared experiences.

Final Fantasy All the Bravest exploits these feelings of nostalgia in almost the most cynical way possible. Outside of its nostalgia points (which are significant), it has no redeeming qualities. It barely qualifies as a video game. It’s a fireworks display – a lightshow – comprised of Cloud Strife, Kefka, Meteor spells and Cactuars. All designed to extract money with ruthless efficiency.

Lightning Returns Isn't The End of Fabula Nova Crystallis

The release of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will not mark the end of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series, according to Square Enix.

In an interview with IGN, veteran Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase suggested that while Lightning Returns would mark the end of Gran Pulse, Cocoon and Lightning herself, it wouldn’t be the last game involving the crystal mythos that was discussed when the series was announced.

“When you say this universe,” he explained, “if you’re talking about the universe that we have been seeing in XIII, XIII-2 and this game, that includes Cocoon, Gran Pulse and the islands in this instalment; that is definitely coming to an end. But if you’re on about Fabula Nova Crystallis and the mythology that these stories are based on, that may continue.”

Final Fantasy All the Bravest: A DLC-Laden Abomination?

By Daniel Tack, Contributor Square Enix’s Final Fantasy All the Bravest for iOS is crafted from the stuff dreams are made of.  The concept is simple – Characters, classes, bosses, music, and backdrops from the Final Fantasy universe in a fast-paced combat soiree mashup.  The combat is eye candy, the pixels are perfect, and the game evokes a sense of nostalgia that even a franchise neophyte can enjoy.  Everyone attacks, there’s no thinking or planning, just tap (or in this case, run your finger across a row) each character as they come off cooldown and let them cut loose with familiar abilities from ages past.  So where do things go wrong?  The devil is in the DLC.

Lightning Returns, But Should She Have Stayed Away?

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII doesn’t look like a Final Fantasy game. Despite only seeing 15 minutes of the upcoming title, this was the thought that resolutely planted itself in my brain and has remained stuck there ever since. With a whole host of changes to party make-up, skill acquisition and, most noticeably, combat all being introduced, it’s obvious that Square Enix’s dev team is trying to evolve the systems of Final Fantasy XIII-2 into something more palatable for those who haven’t played the original Final Fantasy XIII. And while what early stuff I saw already looks like an incredibly promising action game, I couldn’t help but feel that fans of the Final Fantasy franchise should prepare themselves for a bit of a shock.

UPDATE: It seems that yesterday’s theory was correct and that Final Fantasy: All The Bravest will release on iOS tomorrow.

Final Fantasy: All The Bravest Coming This Week?

RPG fans have spotted a mysterious teaser page on Square-Enix’s Japanese official website. The page is empty, save for a cryptic image and “1.17” (January 17) in big bold letters:

Eagle-eyed gamers first made the connection to the beloved Final Fantasy franchise by realizing that the large silhouettes were none other than the Behemoth, the perennial Final Fantasy boss (and sometimes summon). The smaller silhouettes have also been identified as Final Fantasy character classes, most notably the Black Mage and his iconic pointy hat. Even the teaser page’s URL (ff_atb) seems to point to a Final Fantasy connection.
