A Brief History of the World – ($2.99)

It’s a board gaming kind of day in the App Store today, and first up is the newly released “A Brief History of the World” by the Ragnar Brothers. Starting in 3000 BC and ending in 1942, the game explores the rise and decline of major empires of the world together with minor empires and kingdoms. Players marshal armies against one another, crossing seas and oceans by fleets and building forts to better protect their lands. Capitals, cities ands monuments are built to bring the gold needed for victory. More gold is collected as the result of occupation of areas of the map.

Lums – ($0.99)

In a world where vampires have invaded and stolen the sun, it’s up to you to control the movements of the glowing Lums – as they crash into the vamps’ protective, shadowy shelters Angry Birds-style to let in light and burn the baddies to a crisp. It looks and sounds brilliant. Check out the trailer, at the very least:

Zombies!!! – ($4.99)

It’s easy to get tired of zombie games in the App Store, as there are new ones shoved out the door every single day, it seems – but don’t skip over this one. Zombies!!! (that’s precisely three exclamation points, mind you) is a classic board game that pre-dates a lot of the modern overuse of the undead idea, and this new iOS virtualization of the tangible game looks great.

Dark-Quest – ($0.99)

OK, I’m thinking somebody might be getting sued over this one. Just a few days ago we featured the new game Mighty Dungeons as the lead in our April 11 ASU, recommending it to you partly on the basis of it paying homage to the classic board game HeroQuest. Now, less than a week later, another new arrival is making a play for that same piece of nostalgia – but Dark-Quest goes so far with its “homage” that it looks like it’s directly ripping off the old tabletop title. I’ll let others render final judgment, but for comparison’s sake take a look at Dark-Quest’s title screen compared to HeroQuest’s old boxart:

Another not-so-great day in the App Store, so another day without a video to offer you. Tomorrow’s the big Thursday refresh, though, so look forward to a deluge of new titles dropping within the next 24 hours!

The Blocks Cometh – (Free)

Imagine playing a game of Tetris, but instead of directing the paths of falling blocks, you instead play as a character trapped inside the block pit who’s trying desperately to dodge, jump and run out of the way of the incoming blocks so as not to get crushed to death. That’s the premise of the superb design The Blocks Cometh, and it’s a game everyone should make a point to download today – because it’s gone free!

Rigonauts HD – ($1.99)

A bit of Bad Piggies‘ vehicle-construction vibe fuels Engient’s Rigonauts design, though the point of putting together the best ride possible in this game is to go head-to-head against other wildly-built beasts of battle and take them down (before you explode yourself). Take a look:

Mittens – ($0.99)

“Mittens” must be a pretty common name among cats, because in Disney’s newest app that’s what the company’s new feline hero is called (and this is a different character than Mittens the Cat from 2008’s Disney film, Bolt). Lack of naming variety aside, this new physics-based puzzler looks like another winner from the House of Mouse, who’ve been on a winning streak in the App Store thanks to the breakout success of the Where’s My Water? titles and some top-selling Temple Run spin-offs.
