NSA Surveillance Extends The Threat Hierarchy

By Richard Stiennon

The slide below will be familiar to just about anyone who has seen me present. I have used the Threat Hierarchy, first portrayed by my predecessors at Gartner, for a dozen years to launch my narrative on what drives the IT security industry. NSA Surveilance Extends The Threat Hierarchy

By Richard Stiennon, Contributor

The slide below will be familiar to just about anyone who has seen me present. I have used the Threat Hierarchy, first portrayed by my predecessors at Gartner, for a dozen years to launch my narrative on what drives the IT security industry. As I explain at least twice a week to eager investors who want to develop a security portfolio, IT security is different than any other technology sector. There is no maturation. There will not be three or four big players who dominate the space as there are in PCs, databases, ERP, or CAD/CAM. Because there is an outside driving force: threat actors. It was only in 2008 that I realized the threat hierarchy was actually a predictor of future trends. In 2001 I would argue that cybercrime was not really a threat, it did not exist in a big way, there was no Lex Luther skimming pennies off of every transaction on the Internet. Obviously that changed pretty dramatically within a couple of years. It was that realization that led me to research what used to be called Information Warfare, now cyberwar. …read more

Infor hit with lawsuit over alleged software project failure

Infor has been sued by a customer who claims an ERP (enterprise resource planning) project that was supposed to take six months instead allegedly dragged on for well over a year without any useful results.

Buckley Powder, a Colorado company that offers explosives and other products for mining and construction firms, entered an agreement with Infor in December 2011, according to the suit. Under its terms, Infor was supposed to install its SX.e software at Buckley, which had been using another Infor system called TakeStock. Both applications handle processes related to wholesale distribution.

The work was to take no longer than 180 days, but now 18 months has passed with no working system in place, Buckley said in its suit, which was filed last week in U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado.

Instead, “the project has been plagued by setbacks and non-performance on behalf of Infor and no reasonable solution has been presented,” the suit states.

Firm says Epicor wants to 'monopolize' services market for its ERP software

An IT services firm recently sued by Epicor has responded, calling the claims “unwarranted” and part of an attempt on Epicor’s part to “monopolize” the services market for its ERP (enterprise resource planning) software.

Epicor sued Alternative Technology Solutions in March, alleging that the company illegally used Epicor’s software to create and sell “bolt-on” products and services. Such add-ons can’t be created without access to Epicor’s applications, but Alternative has never licensed the software, nor has Epicor given a third party permission to give Alternative access, according to the suit filed in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Instead, Alternative has “duplicated” the software or managed to access it illegally, violating Epicor’s intellectual property as well as software license agreements between Epicor and customers, according to the suit. Alternative has also given customers the erroneous impression that it is an authorized Epicor partner through the use of Epicor trademarks, the suit alleges.

A number of Alternative employees, including CEO Vivian Keena, once worked at Epicor.

Who Are the World's 2nd Best CEOs?

By Brian Stoffel, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty easy to dissect balance sheets, income, and cash flow statements. This is the first step in getting your feet wet in the investment world.

But it doesn’t stop there. If we were to base investing decisions solely on what we read in these statements, that would be akin to picking a significant other based solely on their Facebook profile — to many, it just doesn’t make sense to avoid real-life interaction.

Investigating these “soft” aspects of a company is important for investors. And although we can’t capture all of the intangibles of a company in one article, Glassdoor.com — a website that collects employee sentiment for companies across the world — recently came out with a list that could help: the Top CEOs of 2013.

Over the past few days, I’ve covered CEOs 25 through 3. Today, I’m going to introduce you to the company with the second-highest-rated CEO, give you some background on the company, and at the end, I’ll offer access to a special free report on who is going to win the war between the five biggest tech stocks.

SAP
You may have seen commercials for this giant German company before, but maybe you still don’t understand what it does. In the most basic sense, SAP designs software that allows all the groups that are involved with putting a product or service out — supply chain managers, sub-contractors, marketers, etc. — to communicate on a common platform.

In today’s global economy, having a set software across a whole company is important, as it makes geographically and intellectually disparate parts of a company communicate effectively with one another.

Without a doubt, SAP is not the only company in the world that provides this type of service. It can count other behemoths like Microsoft and Oracle among its competitors, too.

A key differentiator, however, is that a company like Microsoft has a number of different irons in different fires — like search and even gaming. And Oracle also focuses heavily on software outside of just the niche area of enterprise resource planning, or ERP. This means that SAP has the advantage of being slightly more focused on its goal of providing the best ERP experience possible.

This helps explain why Oracle has a 22% market share in ERP, followed by Oracle at 15%, and Microsoft Dynamics at 10%.

Co-leaders to guide the way
Unlike all of the other companies on this list, SAP is led by not one, but two CEOs. Bill McDermott has held his title as CEO since joining Jim Hagemann Snabe in February 2010. McDermott joined the company in 2002 as the director of the company’s Americas and Asia-Pacific regions.

Snabe was appointed at the same time as McDermott, but has been with the company since 1990, working his way up from sales and consulting roles all the way to the executive suite.

Together, they have put together a company that has

Kentucky Schools Launch Statewide Cloud-based ERP System From Tyler Technologies

173 Kentucky school districts move to Tyler’s cloud-based solution for its reliability, long-term cost savings and statewide disaster-recovery capabilities

DALLAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Tyler Technologies, Inc. (NYS: TYL) has successfully moved 173 Kentucky school districts from traditional on-premise deployments of its Munis®enterprise resource planning (ERP) system to a hosted Munis solution. The process took less than two years and makes Kentucky the largest school system in the U.S. on a cloud-based financial management system.

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) has been a Munis client for 18 years. KDE recommended its school districts migrate to a hosted Munis solution for numerous benefits, including:

  • More reliable access and availability of Munis services compared to the individual districts’ on-premise infrastructure, which had reached end-of-life and needed significant investment.
  • Cost savings from transitioning infrastructure and software maintenance from the districts’ IT teams to Tyler’s focused, highly trained technicians who can more efficiently support the school districts’ needs.
  • Disaster-recovery services with redundancy and fail-over features that would be cost-prohibitive for school districts to achieve on their own with an on-premise solution.
  • Tyler’s evergreen policy, which ensures the districts will continue to have the most current version of Munis without disruption of business or relicensing costs.

“Kentucky is a national P-12 leader in cloud computing and has already successfully transitioned many services to the cloud, including statewide email, and we believe that migrating to a hosted Munis solution is the best investment of state dollars for the long term,” said David Couch, associate commissioner for the Office of Knowledge, Information and Data Services. “By moving to Munis’ cloud-based model, we’re actually increasing reliability and capabilities for our school districts, while taking a lot of work off their IT staff. Cost reductions are a benefit of cloud-computing, but for Kentucky schools, our primary driver was increasing the reliability of services beyond what our aging on-premise infrastructure could provide. For 18 years, Munis has been a very good product for us, and we’re excited about the cloud-based Munis model because it gives Kentucky schools an outstanding financial solution and infrastructure far into the future.”

Companies plug into Ariba Network to simplify business commerce, boost performance and profits; SHI to share formula for success at Ariba LIVE

SUNNYVALE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Buying and selling indirect goods and services is a challenge for businesses. But SHI International Corp., a multibillion-dollar global provider of technology products and services and the largest Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) in the United States, and AGCO, a leading global manufacturer of agricultural equipment, have found a way to simplify it. Taking a page from the consumer playbook, the trading partners have tapped into Ariba, an SAP Company and the world’s business commerce network, to connect and transact business more efficiently and effectively – and boost their performance and profits in the process. SHI will share its formula for success at Ariba LIVE, the business commerce event of the year, which will take place May 6-8 at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center in Washington, D.C. Registration for the event is open today at: www.aribalive.com

The Buyer’s Dilemma

With five locations across North America, multiple ERP systems running at each of them and no standard process in place for purchasing, AGCO often had difficulty understanding what it was buying and from whom. “As a result, we were missing opportunities for significant savings,” said Eric Deese, Purchasing Analyst, AGCO.

In addition, AGCO was still receiving invoices and sending payments manually, driving up costs and error rates.

The Seller’s Struggle

In an effort to streamline the purchasing process for its customers and enhance relationships and retention, SHI began connecting to them electronically. “This required setting up and maintaining multiple point-to-point relationships via EDI, fax, phone, email, print, mail, and stand-alone web catalogs, which was both costly and time-consuming,” said John D’Aquila, Applications Support Manager, SHI.
