New Well Installation

Everything I read everywhere says to slope the INPUT piping from the WELL UP to the PUMP so you do not create pockets to trap air.
Recently, my neighbor had a new well and sprinklers put in.
The new well had to be further away from the house.
The installers put piping in which seems a little unconventional to me.
The check valve is above the ground level about two feet.
Then the piping goes back underground for about 18 feet or so.
The system seems to work just fine.
I am wondering if others have seen this, and/or is this the NEW way of doing it?
It seems like that the piping underground would create sort of a container to hold significant water, which might actually HELP the pump to keep it’s prime better.
Any thoughts on this?

hot water heater control valve problems

By rmwolfpac

HELP….I can’t take the cold water anymore. I am a homeowner but general contractor. I have a 10 year old AO Smith Promax 74 gallon water heater with Honeywell smartvalve controller. (I hope it was OK to use the manufacturers name)

Initial symptom… blower would come on, igniter would light, gas would come on then in 2 seconds flame would burn out. Error message on valve said to replace the smartvalve

I replaced the smartvalve at a cost of $200. Hooked it up now get this…

blower comes on, igniter starts to light, then blower shuts off and I get 3 flashes of the error light, which means airflow proving switch or obstruction in the airflow of some sort.

I replaced pressure switch…didn’t help. I took off blower motor, made sure vent was open…did not help. I have had 3 plumbers look at it, and they all say the valve has to be bad. I don’t think so though…somehow the smartvalve is being told to shut down once the valve is told to open the gas to the igniter.

Any thoughts? PLEASE HELP

HELP with widely varying quotes for RH issue in crawlspace

By darkman12

Sorry for the long post but quite troubling and potentially quite costly so bear with me!!

##Here is the issue:
New hardwoods installed in April 2013 onto subfloor that was previously rug, laminate. The wood began to cup in July with the intense rain and high RH we get in NC.

##Floor Installers Inspection:
–Floor guy came, willing to resurface but we went into crawl space to determine possible cause.

–Found that RH was 15-20% greater than in the house (all readings in the house were “superb”). We also observed the following:

–We saw several small “puddles” on the barrier, nowhere near the foundation with no signs of water/puddles on any place near the foundation or vents.

–No noticeable leaks.

–The barrier was ripped in several places, failed to meet at any point on the foundation and had no overlap greater than 2″ where sheets met.

–Vents were open and at grade level in 3/6 locations.

I had 2 guys come to give estimates on correcting the RH issue to solve the cupping.

#Est 1:
Owns a crawlspace sealing company and says the only option to get the humidity down is to install the entire “system” that runs $7-10K. It includes wrapping in 20mil, installing French drains, poly on walls, sealing vents and a sump pump.

##Est 2:
He first went into space with me and pointed out a few things:
–A/C has 2 places that act as “joiners” to the duct work with significant water droplets coming from these boxes.

–All the ducts had condensation that worsened significantly the closer they got to the units and, of course, had puddles in areas right under the ducts.

–His price was $800 that included: re-laying a new 6mil barrier to the walls with proper overlap, sealing vents, wrapping the units with insulation to reduce/eliminate source of water, and wiping down all mold on ducts with antimicrobial. He actually told me I should do it myself because it was not that bad of a job and mold was “mild” (he works for Servepro-like Mon-Fri).

I am leaning towards the second option as it seems to make more “sense” to me and, of course I want it to given how much money option 1 is.

I want to be confident that I am not missing anything here or failing to ask any major questions.

Thanks for any help you can give.

HELP 16 yr old Husky Chow issues

By Money Pitt

We need help to determine if we are considering the right thing. Our 16 yr old Husky Chow is suffering from arthritis. She has stopped her 2 daily walks and has reduced her food intake to less than half a cup of dry food a day. She will not eat wet food at all. She has also stopped enjoying table scraps which we were doing to get her to eat something. We have her on a pain med and a muscle med along with a couple of herbs, all approved by our vet. Since she is not eating, they are upsetting her stomach and she is coughing up byal. She is sleeping most of the time, day/night and when she is not sleeping she is pacing but cannot lift the back legs and drags her rear paws accross the ground. We can no longer wipe her feet when she comes in from the wet grass. She has never had an accident within the house so she still has her facilities. She is panting all the time and I believe that is due to the pain. We are looking for help making the decission of putting her out of her pain. We truly don’t know if that is the right choice. She is still very affectionet.

Looking for all opinions ~ Thanks Doug

HELP: Mobile Home roof with metal roofing leaking

By xtine

I have a 1950s trailer that we bought about a year ago. When we bought it it had metal roofing on the roof that overhangs about 2 or 3 in. on each side. We tried putting the silver trailer roof sealant on. (Twice) went through and caulked the seam between metal roof and trailer roof as well as the gap between trailer and front patio. Also tried the black spray similar to one on tv that they spray on the boat, in spots that didn’t seem to drain as well. However it just eat through it. Trying to avoid tearing the metal roof up if possible and fix as cheap as possible. You can see the water damage inside mostly in the living room and hallway. Along the edge of trailer.
Considering adding more vents to roof and getting some seam tape for the edges and recaulking bolts. Looked into that rubberizeit stuff but was gonna take like 8 bucktts costing like $2200. So looking for any other advice. Thanks

OpenSolaris GRUB> boot failure HELP

By d_oilen

Hi,

i am running an old Opensolaris 5.11 snv_111b on an x86 server. After almost 4 years of successful service, last night out of the blue started to refuse all connections to it’s services, ssh, http, etc. The only visible solution at that time was a restart. But now instead of booting the machine stops at GRUB> prompt. Findroot returns zfs_read error : 15 File not found. Grub is 0.97 and i’m sure i did not perform any updates over night. Can i recover from this? the machine is pretty important still and i need at least eiter to be able to boot it again or recover the data there.
No hardware issues so far because i transferred the disks in an attempt to see if it is an HW error to a different identical machine and the symptom persists.
Any clues about the issue? How can i fix this?

regards,

Windows 8's lagging phone hampers PC sales, analyst says

The problem with Windows 8 sales isn’t Windows 8, it’s Windows Phone 8, says a Gartner analyst.

As consumers move from PCs to tablets they are more likely to buy tablets with a familiar touch interface, says Gartner principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa.

So users of Android phones are more likely to choose an Android tablet, Kitagawa says, and users of Windows Phone 8 devices are more likely to choose a Windows 8 tablet. But Windows Phone 8 lags far behind Androids and iPhones, so the coattail effect has less impact on Windows 8 tablet and PC sales than it would if Windows Phone 8 were more popular.

LIHEAP Deadline Extended — More Time Available To Help PECO Customers Pay Their Energy Bills

Low-income customers must apply for LIHEAP funding now

PHILADELPHIA–(BUSINESS WIRE)– To help customers deal with tough economic conditions, the deadline to apply for the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) has been extended to April 26. With only about $40 million remaining to help Pennsylvania‘s low-income utility customers pay their bills, PECO customers must apply now before money runs out.

LIHEAP is a federal grant program that provides assistance to individuals or families struggling to pay their electric, natural gas or other energy bills. Homeowners, renters, roomers and subsidized housing tenants may be eligible. The cash program provides up to $1,000 in assistance. The LIHEAP Crisis Program provides up to $400 in additional help for emergencies, including preventing utility service from being shut off and reinstating service that has been shut off.

LIHEAP funding can help struggling families deal with heating bills in this tough economic period,” said Patricia King, PECO manager of Universal Services, the department that oversees low-income assistance programs for the company. “It’s important people know that help is available, and that they need to take advantage of it now.”

To get more information or apply for LIHEAP, customers should call PECO‘s LIHEAP hotline at 1-800-34-HELP-4, visit www.peco.com/LIHEAP, or visit PECO‘s Main Office Building at 2301 Market Street in Philadelphia.

Grants are based on household size and income, type of fuel used and county of residence – and a family of four with an annual household income of $34,575 can qualify for help. To be eligible, annual household income cannot exceed 150 percent of the federal poverty income guidelines, or:

  • $16,755 one-person household
  • $22,695 two-person household
  • $28,635 three-person household
  • $34,575 four-person household
  • $40,515 five-person household
  • $46,455 six-person household
  • $52,395 seven-person household
  • $58,335 eight-person household

Word vulnerability tops Microsoft’s targets for Patch Tuesday

A flaw in Microsoft Word ranks among the top security problems addressed by December’s Patch Tuesday fixes, closing a hole that allows remotely executing malicious code on targeted machines regardless of whether users open the infected file. The bulletin is one of five marked critical by Microsoft in its advanced notification about vulnerabilities this month, and several security experts say the Word vulnerability is the top priority.

HELP: 11 (FREE!) Microsoft tools to make life easier

FIRST LOOK: Surface RT

“In this case we assume the ‘critical’ rating comes from Outlook, which can be configured to use Word to visualize documents in its preview pane,” says Qualys CTO Wolfgang Kandek. “This is an automatic mechanism that does not require user interaction. In any case, this will be an important bulletin to watch out for.”
