Microsoft fills Office Mobile hole with iOS Outlook app

OWA for Apple iPhone, iPad

In an odd bit of doublespeak, Microsoft has released a version of its Outlook Web App (OWA) as a native application for the Apple iPhone and iPad.

OWA for iPhone and OWA for iPad, as the two applications are formally known, are now available in Apple App Store. Not everyone can use them, however—users must be Office 365 subscribers, and their administrators must run the latest version of Exchange Online, Microsoft said. If those requirements are met, users can download the free apps.

Microsoft
Microsoft’s OWA for the iPad, left, and iPhone.

What the apps do, however, is fill a hole that Microsoft left with the release of Office Mobile for the iPhone in June. The “free” Office Mobile for iPhone app also requires an Office 365 subscription and includes the ability to open and edit—not create—documents in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Office Mobile iPhone users could only access Outlook via the web app.

iPad users can now take advantage of OWA for iPad—Microsoft hasn’t yet released a version of Office Mobile for the iPad.

Developers unveil new mobile apps for shopping, restaurant reviews at DEMO Mobile

Snaptiva wants to add a bit more color to the experience of shopping for home design and fashion products, literally. The company’s early-stage mobile app is designed to take photographs snapped by users on their mobile devices and employ a matching algorithm to suggest complimentary products based on color. The idea is that a person could snap a photo of, say, a blue dress, and then be directed to a page of listings from retailer partners of say, necklaces or high-heels that would go with that dress. Or the user could take a photograph of a wooded forest, and suggested furniture pieces for decorating a rustic cabin would appear.”We want to disrupt the $480 billion home and fashion industry to answer the simple question, ‘What should I buy?'” Snaptiva CEO Ramsay Hoguet said. The Marblehead, Massachusetts-based company is among several other mobile startups trying to stand out in the increasingly crowded market of mobile apps.Snaptiva was one of several companies, along with Just.Me, Stash, Traffic Labs and the Monkey Inferno, pitching their social mobile products Wednesday to a panel of Silicon Valley veterans at the DEMO Mobile conference in San Francisco. The trade show, which is put on by the International Data Group, is intended to provide a launch pad and a spotlight of sorts for new emerging technologies in mobile. The panel of judges expressed support for Snaptiva’s app, although some questioned the accuracy of the color-matching algorithm, especially given how subjective fashion can be, and also was unsure whether there were too many steps the user had to take first before receiving a list of matches.Meanwhile, Traffic Labs, another company exhibiting at the show, unveiled its restaurant recommendations app at the conference, which its founders referred to as a stripped down version of Yelp. The app, which is available now in the Apple App Store, uses only the three colors of a traffic light — green, yellow or red — to rate various restaurant listings that its users log into the app.The app, its founders said, is designed to provide more trusted recommendations for places than, say, Yelp, and filter out the resulting noise, because users are seeing only the rating and check-in activity of their friends. Users also have the option to share their posts on Facebook and Twitter, and provide additional comments about the business in 140 characters or less. One judge on the DEMO Mobile panel signaled agreement that the Traffic Labs‘ app achieves what it sets out to do. “I like the less is more aspect of it,” Flipboard cofounder Evan Doll said. “What Twitter is to blogging this could be to Yelp,” he added. Still, Traffic Labs‘ founding team, all former workers in the restaurant business, were questioned how they planned to motivate users to check in and rate businesses when that concept is already so prevalent within other apps like Foursquare and Facebook.Their hope was that the app’s simplicity would solve that problem. One other company unveiled an app that in many ways screams social: Beer

OBJE Begins Work on Scalable Business Model to Capture $9 Billion Mobile Gaming Market

SARASOTA, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Obscene Interactive, the gaming subsidiary of OBJ Enterprises (OTCBB: OBJE), is working on a new game-publishing and advertising platform designed to inject a scalable business model into the $9 billion mobile gaming market.

OBJE is a company focused on growth, and we’re constantly seeking ways to expand revenues significantly without dramatically increasing our cost base,” said OBJE CEO Paul Watson. “We believe that new online publishing and advertising platform would be a key driver to increased profitability and huge growth opportunities for our company.”

OBJE announced last month that it’s exploring potential partnerships with indie game developers to build market share by publishing, distributing and marketing hot new social and mobile titles. Now, the company is turning its attention to the development of online tools to make it easier than ever before for indie game-makers to get their creations into the marketplace and maximize multiple revenue stream potential.

In fact, the company’s new scalable vision is already under construction: Earlier this month, the company signed a letter of intent to help market and develop Bluff Wars, a hysterical social game created by Texas-based indie developers FangTooth Studios. OBJE also submitted Phantasmic—the first game developed through its joint venture with Source Street—to the Apple (NAS: AAPL) App Store last week. An Android version of the app is set to follow.

Apple App Store Submission Could Give OBJE Access to Multi-Billion-Dollar Growth Market

SARASOTA, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– By submitting its debut gaming title, Phantasmic, to the Apple App Store this week, OBJ Enterprises (OTCBB: OBJE) expects to soon gain access to a booming, multi-billion-dollar applications market servicing the world’s growing number of smartphone and tablet users.

According to new data from research firm Canalys, the first three months of 2013 saw the four leading mobile app stores rack up approximately $2.2 billion in revenue, a figure which accounts for paid apps, in-app purchases and subscriptions. That number also represents a nine-percent increase compared to revenue tallied during the first quarter of last year. Total app downloads saw an 11-percent jump over last year to 13.4 billion.

Apple’s App Store remains comfortably at the top of the applications market, accounting for 74 percent of the revenues. That’s why it’s the first platform to which Phantasmic has been submitted for approval. The game is a free-to-play app created by Novalon Games, the developer founded by OBJE‘s joint venture with Source Street, and it’s planned to be the first of many submissions from OBJE.

“The App Store is an essential marketplace for products like Phantasmic, and we’re looking forward to developing and submitting more and more games to Apple in order to capture a big piece of that incredible market growth,” said OBJE CEO Paul Watson.

The next step for the company will be pursuing partnerships with indie developers to publish and distribute additional new titles. OBJE has already begun to pursue this new initiative, signing an LOI to help market and develop Bluff Wars, a hot new game created by Texas-based indie developers FangTooth Studios.

California AG Harris urges app developers to respect users' privacy

The wealth of personal data that mobile apps collect on their users needs to be conspicuously stated to consumers or developers could face legal heat, California attorney general Kamala D. Harris said Wednesday.

Rather than resorting to subpoenas and enforcement actions, the California attorney general’s office is in the midst of a crusade of sorts built around encouraging app developers, and Internet services firms in general, to become compliant with state privacy laws on their own accord.

Last year, for instance, the office reached an agreement with a number of major tech companies, including Facebook and Google, to make the privacy policies for those companies’ mobile apps available to consumers in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store before the download process rather than after. The idea is to encourage technology companies that have access to users’ personal identifiable information such as geolocation and contact lists to better inform consumers how that information is used so consumers can make better decisions about using the app in the first place.

California has some of the strongest privacy laws in the country and is often seen as a bellwether for how other states nationwide will grapple with the ongoing issues surrounding consumer privacy and mobile apps. Striking the right balance between innovation and protecting users’ privacy, therefore, is an issue high on Harris’ agenda.

Is Google Finally About to Get Serious About Messaging?

By Evan Niu, CFA, The Motley Fool

Headless Drive Through Prank

Filed under:

For a company that’s been trying to focus more lately, Google‘s current amalgam of various messaging services is in dire need of some unification. The search giant has a plethora of different offerings geared toward mobile and desktop messaging, and none of them have made major impacts on the market.

Google Talk is a desktop platform for chatting and video calls. Google Voice offers free SMS texting, but requires using a separate number. Google Plus Hangouts are meant for group video chats, and Google Plus Messenger is geared toward messaging on the go. That’s a lot of services that are needlessly distinct, since a unified service would have greater brand strength.

This is nothing new; Google product manager Nikhyl Singhal conceded last summer that the company has “done an incredibly poor job servicing [its] users here,” noting that Big G was planning to merge the services. The name of the unified service has been rumored to be Google Babel, which is expected to be a cross-platform chat service available on Android, Apple iOS, Chrome, Google Plus, and Gmail.

Last week, a Digital Trends report suggested that Google was in talks to acquire popular cross-platform messaging app WhatsApp for upwards of $1 billion. The search giant and the mobile start-up have been at the negotiating table for a little over a month, with the latter still trying to fetch more.

Source: WhatsApp.

WhatsApp has promptly taken off as an SMS alternative, since the service uses existing phone numbers, supports numerous different operating system platforms, and uses existing data plans in lieu of SMS plans. For $0.99 and no ads or in-app purchases, that’s quite a value proposition that wireless carriers are none too happy about, and why the app is the No. 2 paid app in Apple’s App Store currently.

Apple’s iMessage has also taken off in popularity, in part because of its tight integration with iDevices so there are no extra steps required by users. On the last conference call, CEO Tim Cook mentioned that the company now sends 2 billion iMessages per day. iMessage also ties into Apple’s desktop platform, offering another layer of convenience. On the video chatting front, Apple also has FaceTime.

Facebook has also been beefing up its mobile messaging capabilities. Not only does it offer texts and media, but the social network even just added free voice calling to its iOS Messenger app, using the phone’s data connection. Facebook just wants to be the sole communications medium between you and your friends, even if it doesn’t monetize messaging directly.

Apple, Google, and Facebook are all vying for messaging domination, much to the chagrin of wireless carriers. It’s about time for Google to finally get serious.

As one of the most dominant Internet companies ever, Google has made a habit of driving strong returns for its shareholders. However, like many other web companies, it’s also struggling to adapt to an increasingly mobile …read more

OBJE and Partners Submit First Game to Apple App Store

SARASOTA, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Obscene Interactive, the gaming division of OBJ Enterprises (OTCBB: OBJE), is proud to announce that its debut gaming app, Phantasmic, has been submitted to the Apple (NAS: AAPL) App Store in conjunction with its developer, Novalon Games.

The submission is the culmination of months of hard work by OBJE and its partners to capitalize on the incredible rise in popularity of free-to-play games for both Apple and Android devices. According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, the App Store brings in annual sales of $25 billion, driven largely by gaming titles. Earlier this year, the App Store hit 40 billion downloads since its inception, including 20 billion in 2012 alone.

In a joint venture with Source Street, OBJE formed gaming developer Novalon Games late last year to produce exciting new titles primed to succeed in the App Store and Google Play platforms. Once Phantasmic is approved by the App Store, the company expects to begin earning revenue from in-game purchases by downloaders.

“This is a major milestone in our mobile gaming initiative, and we’re extremely excited to go through the submission and approval process for the very first time,” said OBJE CEO Paul Watson. “Going through this process internally helps us to understand the market and hurdles associated with publishing social and mobile applications so that we can deliver economies of scale to our future gaming partners and indie developers.”

Phantasmic is the company’s first submission, but not the last. Hot on the heels of Phantasmic, OBJE and Novalon plan to submit their second gaming app, Stupid Pixels: an open-ended, puzzle-based strategy game that recalls motifs from the classic Lemmings.

Obscene Interactive is a division of OBJ Enterprises, Inc. that is working to develop innovative gaming products for the Apple App Store and Google (NAS: GOOG) Play platforms alongside companies such as Electronic Arts (NAS: EA) , Glu Mobile Inc. (NAS: GLUU) and The9 Limited (NAS: NCTY) .

Chuck E. Cheese’s Goes High-Tech Launching Augmented Reality App – Chuck E.’s Say Cheese!

The family entertainment leader’s first app invites families to interact and take photos with the brand’s updated mascot on their next visit

DALLAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Augmented reality took center stage at this month’s SXSW as many companies debuted apps allowing consumers to pre-plan living spaces or find their vehicle. This week, America’s favorite mouse is getting in on the action with the development and introduction of Chuck E. Cheese’s first-ever downloadable app, Chuck E.’s Say Cheese!, from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Available for free download today, the new Say Cheese! App makes trips to Chuck E. Cheese’s even more fun for kids of all ages. Using augmented reality, the app allows parents and kids to take fun photos with an animated version of Chuck E. Cheese on any visit to the family restaurant and gaming center.

After the meal has been enjoyed, games have been played and prizes have been chosen, a trip to Chuck E. Cheese’s is all about the lasting memories families make by enjoying time together. Knowing that photo sharing helps capture those moments of unleashed joy in a tangible way, family entertainment leader, Chuck E. Cheese’s, began researching and developing a new in-store attraction to enhance that part of the experience.

“What differentiates Chuck E. Cheese’s from other family entertainment options is interaction with Chuck E. himself. Since launching our contemporized mascot last summer, we’ve been committed to increasing the breadth of that interaction for families. Augmented reality is perfect for that,” said Scott McDaniel, chief marketing officer of CEC Entertainment, Inc., Chuck E. Cheese’s parent company. “We know our guests are very mobile, and from their feedback we also know they love sharing their memories and photos with their families, friends and even with us. By tapping into augmented reality technology we’ve created a completely unique experience that brings parents and kids into a Chuck E. performance like never before.”

After downloading the free Say Cheese! App at home or while in stores, guests can look for pink, orange and blue “Say Cheese Here!” signs that serve as in-store hotspots on tabletops, the sides of games and backdrops throughout every Chuck E. Cheese’s location to activate the app’s augmented reality camera. When launching the app for the first time, guests will see simple step-by-step instructions for putting it into action.

Official: NHTSA SaferCar app allows consumers to track safety ratings, recalls

By Chris Tutor

NHTSA SaferCar app

Filed under: While many car shoppers say safety is a big factor in their choice of new car, there hasn’t been an easy to way to access data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The government agency’s website is clunky at best, and close to unusable on mobile devices.

That’s why NHTSA decided to release the SaferCar app for mobile iOS devices. Users can easily access crash test ratings, recalls and complaints about hundreds of cars. Use the app to scan your car’s VIN and it will even alert you to news and recall notices. The app also helps with the proper installation of child safety seats by directing users to the nearest fire or police station and other entities that can assist.

But possibly a more important piece of news from NHTSA today is that it will open up its databanks and Application Programming Interfaces (API) to other app developers so the data can be used in other apps. NHTSA will even publish an online course to teach programmers how to access and use the APIs.

The free app is available now from Apple’s App Store, and you can read more about it in the press release below.

Quick Play: Table Top Racing

By Seyth Miersma

Tabletop Racing splash screen

Filed under:

Studio Playrise Digital has recently launched a clever new micro-scaled racing game for Apple’s App Store, called Table Top Racing ($2.99). As the name indicates, the basic theme for the iPhone and iPad app is that of a kid staging imaginative “races” with toy cars – all along the surfaces of handy, obstacle-dotted table tops. After spending a few days with Table Top Racing, here’s what we thought.

Play Notes

 • The overall look and feel of the game is chunky, charming and easy to understand. Menus are simple and streamlined, and designed so that you’re pretty much always just one step away from your garage, where all of the important car selecting and tuning happens. The graphics are bright, clear and clean, though hardly cutting edge in the ever-more sophisticated world of tablet/smart phone gaming.
 • Racing action is very simple to catch on to. Races happen in a few different formats, but basically this is a Mario Kart-lite experience. Drive wacky cars, fire weapons or set traps along the track, try to survive the race and finish in first place.
 • Steering is accomplished by way of right/left buttons on the extreme sides of the screen. We played Table Top Racing exclusively on the iPad for this test, and found the steering buttons to be a bit on the small side. It’s too easy to “miss” the button zone and then miss your turn as a result. Don’t expect your Micro Machine-style racer to handle with realistic physics, either. This wasn’t our expectation, and the driving is perfectly satisfying for a game of this type with such stylized handling.
 • Difficulty feels spot-on in this app. It’s easy enough to get started and win a few races off the bat, and earning enough money to keep your racer competitive isn’t too challenging in the early going. By the later Championships, the going is reasonably tougher. Of course, TTR allows for you to make purchases of in-game coins using real money, too, so you can buy your way into the top-spec cars whenever you get too frustrated.
 • With all of that said, we would def finitely consider this to be an “all-ages” app. Kids should have no problem with the straightforward controls; adults will find even the enough variation in difficulty to make this enjoyable.
 • At $2.99, this feels like a good buy from the App Store. If our weekend’s worth of testing is any indication, you’ll spend 10 hours or more just working through the Championships, and a few more than that completing every race and buying every vehicle. This is a really good choice if you’ve got a few long flights, train rides, etc. staring you down, with nothing to while away the time.

In addition to our full-length reviews of big-name console racing games, we thought it would be useful to publish brief Quick Play reviews of interesting new racing titles. If you’ve got a tip about a new racing, driving or otherwise automotive-themed …read more

App Spotlight: DialMyCalls automates group calling, texting

Are you managing a sales team? Running a small business with far-flung employees? Looking for unique ways to market to your best customers?

Then you know that email isn’t always the best way to contact all these people, especially if the message is urgent or time-sensitive. But it’s not like you have the bandwidth to pick up the phone and call each and every person.
