Royal Riches: What the Monarchy Costs Great Britain

Royal finances: what the monarchy costs Great Britain

AP/Lefteris Pitarakis

Here’s a paradox about Great Britain. In many ways, it’s a more progressive country than the United States, its colonial offspring. It has a more generous welfare state (including national health care), a more progressive tax structure, and a third major political party to the left of Labour. Most workers are entitled to at least 28 paid days of vacation per year, and same-sex marriage will soon be legal throughout England and Wales.

And yet Great Britain maintains one of the most conservative institutions on the planet: a hereditary monarchy, something Americans would never countenance. This despite the fact that King Charles I lost two civil wars, leading to his own decapitation and the short-lived abolition of the monarchy, in the mid-17th century.

And though the royal family’s political significance has long since been reduced to the ceremonial, the Windsors still have a massive financial footprint. As sovereign, the Queen owns the Crown Estate, a property portfolio worth £8.1 billion ($12.4 billion) as of last month — the first time its value has exceeded £8 billion. It includes a lot of prime real estate — “large parts of London’s West End,” “15 retail parks in various towns and cities,” shopping centers, offices, agricultural lands, forests, and “most UK coastline,” according to the BBC — and 15 percent of its annual revenues is used to fund the monarchy. The rest goes to the Treasury.

As a result of the these assets’ recent performance, the Queen is getting a raise: the Sovereign Grant, as her cut of the Crown Estate’s revenues is called, is set to increase next year from £36.1 million to £37.89 million (more than $55 million) — a gain of 5 percent, and the second consecutive bump to her allowance.

“The Crown Estate as a whole dates from the time of the Norman Conquest,” explains the monarchy’s official website — more than 900 years ago — but the current arrangement came into effect in 1760. That was the year King George III — the intolerable tyrant of the Declaration of Independence — signed the revenues over to the Treasury, and in return, stopped having to pay for the civil government, the national debt, and his own personal debt. Those expenses were covered by something called the Civil List, funded by the Treasury and supplemented more recently by grants from other departments, until the Sovereign Grant Act of 2011. Buckingham Palace called the change “a modern, transparent and simpler way of funding the head of state,” but opponents of the monarchy are unconvinced. “Pegging royal funding to Crown Estate revenue makes no sense at all,” said the group Republic, which advocates replacing the Queen (or King) with an elected head of state. “The two are not related. Crown Estate revenue has always been there to provide funds for the government.”

Rand Paul aide with racist past resigns

By hnn

(The Root) — Jack Hunter, the controversial aide to Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), has resigned nearly two weeks after his previous ties to a white separatist group were revealed. Hunter announced his resignation in an email to the conservative news site the Daily Caller.

He expressed embarrassment for some of his previous racially inflammatory behavior, although he stopped short of acknowledging it as racist. His email read in part:

I’ve long been a conservative, and years ago, a much more politically incorrect (and campy) one. But there’s a significant difference between being politically incorrect and racist. I’ve also become far more libertarian over the years, a philosophy that encourages a more tolerant worldview, through the lens of which I now look back on some of my older comments with embarrassment….

Chicago Politician: “Police Are Killing Some Of These Kids.”

By Chris Agee

Black on Black 300x270 Chicago Politician: Police are killing some of these kids.

It is abundantly obvious Chicagoans have no qualms about electing radical leftists. A ridiculous notion advanced by one state representative from the crime-ridden city, however, illustrates the depravity of area politics.

Monique Davis, addressing the Windy City’s prevailing murder epidemic, shared a particularly deranged conspiracy theory.

“I’m going to tell you what some suspicions have been,” she told listeners of a local radio station, explaining “people have whispered” to her that “they’re not sure that black people are shooting all of these children.”

As if such willful ignorance was not discouraging enough, she suggested the brave men and women in law enforcement might actually be behind the widespread violence.

“I don’t want to spread this, but I’m just going to tell you what I’ve been hearing,” she said, in a transparent ploy to avoid responsibility for the absurd comment. “They suspect maybe the police are killing some of these kids.”

The representative demonstrated a quintessential leftist tactic by making tacit allegations without any tangible evidence. Once such misinformation reaches the public, they know at least a portion of the population will eagerly believe it to confirm their own prejudices.

The left has tried — often successfully — to foment hate toward the majority race in the aftermath of a case involving two minorities. Davis and her ideological comrades take the idiocy to another level by exonerating real murderers in favor of condemning those tasked with keeping citizens safe.

Garry McCarthy, superintendent of the Chicago police force, called Davis’ statements “absurd,” “inflammatory” and “insulting.” In response, the elected official doubled down by standing with the anonymous conspiracy theorists to whom she previously alluded.

Clearing up any confusion, Davis prefaced her statements on a local radio station with this disclaimer: “I’m not a detective; I’m not an investigator.”

She then repeated her previous contention that “many people in my community … believe it is possible that some of these murders are committed by our finest. Now, we can’t say that doesn’t happen.”

Disingenuous arguments often involve promulgating vicious rumors and calling on the accused to prove them wrong. Even in the notoriously corrupt culture of Chicago politics, such crass behavior should be considered beyond the pale.

The Biblical Case for a Libertarian Government

Link…http://www.capitalisminstitute.org/biblical-case/

The emphasis of this article will be on “conservative” views of government — the notion that the government can outlaw activities simply because those activities are sin. Later, I’ll publish an article that explicitly covers “leftist” Christian beliefs — the idea that the government should have strong welfare programs to “care” for the poor.

Peace, Violence, and Jesus Christ

Jesus taught a lifestyle of non-violence, peaceful “tolerance”, and a lifestyle based on love and mercy. When I say “tolerance”, I don’t mean verbally — I mean physically. Christ constantly spoke out about what was evil. He discussed and condemned sin repeatedly — especially the sin of the religious conservatives of the day, the Pharisees.

Jesus taught a remarkable philosophy at the time — that of peace. He explicitly said in the Sermon on the Mount:

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”

Most commentators, including Spurgeon, agree with this on a literal and figurative level. A Christian should be a maker of peace. Of course, being a peace-maker doesn’t mean peace will occur — after all, Jesus died a violent death, and promised that His followers would endure hatred and violence from tyrants.

Self-Defense and Justified Violence

Jesus is often used as an example of pacifism because He allowed the government to kill Him. The idea that this justifies pacifism is absurd, because Jesus explicitely explained that He didn’t fight because He was on earth for the purpose of dying for the world — He had to allow them to kill him.

“My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place.”

Jesus allowed them to kill Him because the establishment of the His kingdom required that He die and rise again three days later. This was part of the plan. His reasoning was not that violence in self-defense is bad — but completely about context.

He literally said: “If it were, my servants would fight.” In other words, when discussing earthly matters, violence absolutely can be justified, even by peacemaker.

There is literally only one example of Jesus using violence on anyone while He was on earth. That example is when He entered the Temple Courts, and saw that there were people in the temple buying and selling and “stealing” by using improper weights and measurements. Jesus’ response was ferocious. He pulled out a whip, and drove them out of the temple, flipping tables, and dumping the money-changers posessions onto the ground. He said:

“‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”

I can’t imagine a more basic example of proper violence than this. Jesus wasn’t just anyone — He was the Son of God, and this was His house. Even then, the only violence done was on those who were literally robbers. Jesus used violence on thieves while they were in the act. And He was the Great …read more

Satan Makes History Twice This Week

By Rev Michael Bresciani

Satan SC Satan makes history Twice This Week

Centuries of British nobility has turned the corner for the worse. In spite of the British Coalition for Marriage having seven times as many supporters as the conservative party, David Cameron and Queen Elizabeth II are proudly announcing the right for gays to marry in England. The gays and the liberals are ecstatic, but the rank and file across the island nation is repulsed and sickened.

Sir Gerald Howarth, a former government minister, said Britain had no right to re-define marriage; and he said it was an “absolute parliamentary disgrace.”

Nobility and disgrace is a perfect non-sequitur on display in the parliament and the apostate Church of England (Anglican). This announcement brings home, in full clarity, the meaning of the last day’s prophetic warnings of the Bible.

The warning of scripture is that, because the nations choose the prurient, the perverted, and all that opposes the commandments of God, they will be given over to reprobation to prepare them for their own judgment and the last day’s tumults and dark days. To use the most fundamental language of biblical theology – it is Satanic, and it will bring judgment.

Britain’s ignominiousness has been outshined only by America’s contumaciousness.

At about the same time the queen announced her favor for the gays, Rolling Stone magazine published the picture of Boston bomber suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in full color with dazzling air brushed quality on the cover of their latest edition. Famed musician Ted Nugent, who made the cover of RS himself in 1979, said RS produces mostly dope-inspired leftist tripe, and he blasted the magazine for its cover.

Nugent said, “It is important the young readers of RS know how a fellow dope smoker lost his mind and doped his way into the evil, brain-dead Islamist terrorism and the horror he wreaked on innocent Americans.”

Rolling Stone once adorned their cover with a picture of Charles Manson; we can only imagine that they will be perfectly willing to publish the face of the antichrist, when as prophecy promises, he arrives to turn the world completely on its ear.

Those who still trust their bibles know that Satan has many faces, and his doctrine and message have many modern faces and voices.

This writer, along with a myriad of others, is willing to risk being labeled just another bible thumping, right wing voice decrying the world’s plunge into everything evil to declare that we are allowing all that is nascent to lead us into the ancient prophecies of the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and the judgment of nations.

From Christian sites on the backwaters of the internet to the voices of our best known preachers and prophets, the warnings are faithfully forwarded to a lost and dying world. The advice is simple, but profoundly important; take heed.

The Apostle Peter charged all believers to ‘take heed,’ but especially as we see the last days approaching. Peter emphatically warned that ‘prophecy’ was the key that alone could keep us from failing as these dreadful times unfold. To wit:

Art Laffer's Nearly Right On Taxes But Not Quite

By Tim Worstall, Contributor

Art Laffer’s made a proposal that the US should be collecting sales tax on online sales properly and then using that cash income to reduce personal income tax rates. There’s an article here and the full paper here. His point isn’t so much that taxes on online sales should be higher, only that they should actually be collected: A move towards e-fairness would give states an opportunity to use additional online sales tax revenues to lower rates on more burdensome taxes, such as the personal income tax. This would create a more efficient tax system and correct a fundamental distortion of the retail marketplace, where traditional retailers must collect the sales tax and their online competitors don’t. This has attracted a certain amount of criticism. Sneering criticism even: Art Laffer along with Donna Arduin released some fantasy called Pro-Growth Tax Reform and E-Fairness that claims that if we would tax Internet sales then we could have a huge increase in output and employment by 2022 if we used the extra sales taxes to reduce income taxes…(…)…A lot of conservatives seem to love this idea and why not. Sales taxes tend to be regressive while income taxes tend to be progressive. A switch from income taxation to sales taxation fits the bill if one wants a more regressive tax system. But to claim that this would lead to some magical surge in economic growth rates is a real Laugher. I’m afraid this is rather unfair criticism too. Yes, I know Art Laffer’s over on the decidedly uncool conservative end of the political spectrum but as with his earlier invocation of the Laffer Curve there’s good and well known economic theory underlying this idea. …read more

Video: Document Expert Could Topple The Obama Administration

By Kris Zane

There have been many lawsuits challenging Barack Obama’s eligibility to be President—most based on the fact that Obama is not a natural born citizen, his father being a Kenyan. Other lawsuits challenge the validity of Obama’s PDF long-form birth certificate, riddled with strange anomalies like multiple layers and eight different fonts.

The lawsuits have all crashed and burned in flames for two reasons: 1. The court hearing the lawsuits have treated the cases as a joke instead of a valid question of Constitutional requirements. And 2. The plaintiffs haven’t had Reed Hayes on their side.

Reed Hayes is a forensic document expert who may be the man who finally brings down the Obama administration.

In an extensive and scathing forty page report on Obama’s birth certificate prepared for the upcoming eligibility lawsuit before the Alabama Supreme Court, Hayes concludes the following:

…Based on my observations and findings, it is clear that the Certificate of Live Birth I examined is not a scan of an original paper birth certificate, but a digitally manufactured document created by utilizing material from various sources. In over 20 years of examining documentation of various types, I have never seen a document that is so seriously questionable in so many respects. In my opinion, the birth certificate is entirely fabricated.

You might be saying: Okay, there has been something like two dozens lawsuits. They’ve all failed. The court and Obama’s lawyers always deem any experts against Obama’s birth certificate as quacks. So what’s different this time?

Two words: Perkins Coie.

Sound familiar? It should. It’s the law firm that has represented Barack Hussein Obama in virtually every single eligibility court challenge.

And guess who has done extensive work for and testified on behalf of Perkins Coie?

Forensic document expert Reed Hayes, whose abridged list of training, experience, and court cases goes on for a dozen pages.

How will Obama’s lawyers discredit a forensic document expert that their own law firm extensively relied on?

Answer: They won’t be able to discredit him. If they do happen to try to discredit him, every single case Perkins Coie has employed Reed Hayes for will also be discredited.

How’s that for a catch-22?

But that isn’t the half of Obama’s problems.

The gaggle of Perkins Coie lawyers will be arguing that Obama is eligible to be President before the Alabama Supreme Court, with none other than Roy Moore presiding as Chief Justice. Moore is a conservative and strict constitutionalist who has voiced his concerns in the past regarding Barack Obama’s eligibility to be President. In fact, he is the judge who supported Lt. Colonel Terry Lakin’s refusal to deploy to Afghanistan until Obama provided proof that he was a natural born citizen.

Oh, but there’s one more problem. A very big problem: Obama’s lawyers have produced a birth certificate in their brief to the Alabama Supreme Court. Problem: It differs from the birth certificate Obama released on April 27, 2011!

Whoops!

Will Barack Hussein Obama again slither out of another legal challenge to his eligibility?

Is forensic …read more

Man Faces Charge For Taking Biden’s Advice

By B. Christopher Agee

Joe Biden Words Have Consequences SC Man faces charge for taking Bidens advice

Though he has somehow held an elected office through much of his adult life, Joe Biden’s greatest achievement has not been any sweeping legislation or principled filibuster, but a never-ending supply of gaffes.

The majority of his verbal misfires are good for a laugh but cause no real damage. One of his comments, though, might translate to legal woes for one Washington state man.

When 52-year-old Jeffery Barton saw what he believed to be a group of individuals breaking into his vehicles, he recalled the advice of the vice-president.

Offering input into the debate over gun control, Biden suggested that Americans “get a double-barreled shotgun” for protection. He advised his wife to “fire two blasts outside the house” should she sense trouble.

Barton heeded those words at his own peril. He has since been charged with one count of illegally aiming or disgcharging a firearm, to which he pleaded not guilty.

“I did what Joe Biden told me to do,” he said in his defense. “I went outside and fired my shotgun in the air.”

Clark County sheriff’s deputies, however, dispute the politician’s sage advice, saying that the law doesn’t allow Barton to fire a weapon in the absence of a life-threatening event.

At the very least, this defendant will be able to present a unique argument during upcoming court appearances. Maybe Biden himself will receive a subpoena to appear as an expert witness.

IRS Watchdog ‘disturbed’ Agency Withheld Documents

By Breaking News

IRS Transforming USA SC IRS watchdog ‘disturbed’ agency withheld documents

WASHINGTON — The investigator who wrote a scathing report about the Internal Revenue Service targeting tea party groups says he is “disturbed” the agency withheld newly released documents showing progressive groups may also have been singled out for additional scrutiny.

IRS Inspector General J. Russell George told a congressional panel Thursday the IRS did not provide the documents to his office during a yearlong audit. George said he just received the documents last week.

George issued a report in May that said IRS agents in a Cincinnati office improperly singled out groups with “tea party” and other conservative labels for additional scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status during the 2010 and 2012 elections.

George’s report blamed ineffective management for allowing the practice to continue for more than 18 months, delaying hundreds of applications for more than a year.

Since the revelations were made public, three congressional committees and the Justice Department launched investigations and much of the top leadership was replaced, including the acting commissioner.

To Paraphrase Hank Jr: Are You Ready For Some Race Riots?

By Fred Weinberg

Harry Reid To Paraphrase Hank Jr: Are You Ready For Some Race Riots?

Harry Reid (D-Washington DC Ritz Carleton) has truly come full circle.

That is, he used to represent the state of Nevada; and now he represents the highest political bidder, but is still nominally elected from Nevada.

When I first moved to Nevada from Oklahoma, I was advised by Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe that I would meet Reid, he would come off as my friend (I had just purchased a Las Vegas radio station) and a conservative, and I would soon discover that neither was true.

As usual, Oklahoma’s senior Senator was right on the money.

Harry’s latest outrage was a Saturday comment after the George Zimmerman acquittal urging Eric Holder’s department of so-called justice to re-investigate the incident and, presumably, bring Federal charges against Zimmerman.

To paraphrase Hank Williams Jr., Are You Ready For Some Race Riots?

Nobody won the Zimmerman trial.

Zimmerman himself will have to live the rest of his life with the death of a 17-year-old kid on his conscience.

The prosecution will have to live with the fact that they perverted our system to bring charges that had not a shred of evidence, all just to make some race-baiting poverty pimps in Florida and New York with political influence happy.

And Barack Obama will have to live with one of his famous loose-lipped open pie hole comments that if he had a son, he would look like Treyvon Martin, the dead kid.

For the Feds to try and prove some kind of a “civil rights” case against Zimmerman would be an overreach of the kind that could easily ignite the middle class which has seen the President’s so called administration run guns to Mexico, use the IRS to screw its opponents, and justify spying on innocent Americans in the name of national security.

If the animals in Oakland (or anywhere else) who did their best imitation of the race riots in Watts want to spread their gospel with violence, I suspect that in 2013, the people who they will try and commit violence against are ready for it and willing to fight back.

That makes this an even bigger powder keg.

The next Watts or Detroit will probably be met with citizen resistance.  People – all kinds of people – are sick and tired of being pushed into a level of political correctness on the question of race.

We have a black President.  We have one of the most incompetent Attorneys General in the history of the United States who also happens to be black.  The civil rights movement won.  It was a worthy battle, but it is OVER!

What you are seeing today is the race-baiting poverty pimps who cannot any longer live off a movement that won its battles years ago. These are people who need to get a real job and life.

Instead, they seize on a case like this to try and regenerate their pathetic “movement.”

Folks who go to work every day, play by the rules, and may well be …read more

If Sharpton’s 100 Cities Go Violent – Will He Be Held Accountable?

By Rev Michael Bresciani

Al Sharpton SC If Sharpton’s 100 Cities Go Violent Will He be Held Accountable?

The major difference between civil rights movements of the past and those of today is blaringly obvious. Civil rights movements of the 60s were aimed at freeing many people from oppression and injustice. The faux civil rights leaders of today engage in aiming all their resources at one person. The feeling is not so much about justice as it is about vengeance, venting, and (in some cases) violence.

Al Sharpton announced that he will use his networks to rally protesters in 100 cities this coming weekend to call for the DOJ to drag George Zimmerman back to court to face federal charges on civil rights violations. Without arguing whether this is fair, we are prompted by the barest expediency to ask the all-important question – what if it goes wrong?

The nation is charged since the Florida trial of Zimmerman ended with a not guilty verdict. Blacks are not happy with the verdict and are calling for the proverbial pound of flesh. Millions of others think the verdict was fair, and the FBI has concluded that there were no racial motivation connected to the incident. None of this has undaunted the perennial team of Sharpton and Jackson from doing what they do best – riling up the people.

Since every state in the nation has laws against ‘inciting a riot,’ is there a chance that one of these rallies could be the trigger for just such an eventuation?

Several violent incidents have already erupted over the verdict in the Zimmerman case. Purposely gathering to decry the verdict, so soon after the trail, could be the seed for even more bad behavior.

Will Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson be held to account for any violence, injuries, deaths, and destruction of property that may result from these gatherings? This question may not be foremost in the thinking of people today, but perhaps it should be.

In Oakland, Calif., a conservative filmmaker was beaten mercilessly by an angry mob that was demonstrating against the Zimmerman verdict. In Milwaukee, a 34 year-old white male was brutalized and battered by a group of black teens angry over the verdict. He was saved by another black male who pulled him out of the beating.

Although the business of Trayvon Martin’s past, his record, and his attitude was not allowed as evidence at the trial, now it is pouring forth like a flood. Not everyone sees young Martin as a happy little teenager with a hoodie munching on Skittles.

Black journalist and editor of the Daily Rant Mychal Massie, himself a minister, has declared that Trayvon’s problems are rooted in bad parenting. Massie also believes that Trayvon was shot for only the reasons that came forth in the trial and not because of the color of his skin.

Andrea Shea King writes in an article entitled “It Wasn’t Just Skittles Trayvon Was Carrying,” published on WND July 15, 2013, that Trayvon was jacked up on a combination of a Skittles, Arizona Iced Tea, and Robitussin, all which make for a psychotic inducing cocktail that produces episodes …read more

College Students Say Abortion Support Translates To More Sex

By B. Christopher Agee

Planned Parenthood 2 SC College students say abortion support translates to more sex

While some recent research has shown a general decrease in support for abortion, a troubling trend seems to be gaining steam on the nation’s college campuses.

Conservative journalist Caleb Bonham released recorded interviews featuring a number of University of Colorado at Boulder students who expressed a disturbing reason for supporting a woman’s right to kill her child. Many male students referred to a “bro-choice” movement, which they claimed aids in the pursuit of indiscriminate sex.

One budding scholar opined “college is about” wanting “to get laid,” adding that like-minded students “better go with the bro-choice.”

A fellow thinker asked, “What’s wrong with getting laid a little more?” He responded to his own question by declaring himself “bro-choice all the way.”

Their stale rhetoric might hint that they’ve been reading the same talking points, but female students expressed similarly disgusting apathy concerning the murderous act of abortion. Many young women affirmed the contention that a man’s far-left stance on the issue makes him more likely to get lucky.

Describing his own video, Bonham said it is obvious many students embrace a “self-centered mindset … that views abortion as a means to ensure materialistic, responsiblilty-free sex.”

When the government, media, and even the colleges these students attend deny the sanctity of life in pursuit of sexual convenience, it is hardly surprising they express similarly offensive opinions in turn. One can scarcely imagine the incalculable contribution millions of aborted humans would have made to our society if only afforded the most basic of rights.

For the shallow, brainwashed supporters of abortion-on-demand, though, there is no room for such peripheral considerations. The argument has conspicuously shifted away from the well-being of a pregnant woman to the utterly prurient desire for sexual conquests.

As distressing as our nation’s cultural decline has been in recent years, these young adults offer absolutely frightening prospects for the future.

RI high court asked to overturn Legion will ruling

Lawyers contesting the will of a widow who gave some $60 million to a secretive and disgraced Roman Catholic religious order are trying again to have their case heard, filing court papers in an attempt allow the woman’s niece to sue.

The papers, filed Wednesday with the Rhode Island Supreme Court, argue that Mary Lou Dauray has the right to intervene in the estate of her late aunt, Gabrielle Mee, a devout Catholic who gave most of her money to the conservative religious order the Legion of Christ. Mee died in 2008.

The lawyers seek to overturn a ruling by Superior Court Judge Michael Silverstein, who threw out Dauray’s lawsuit last year, saying she had no standing to sue. But he said at the same time that evidence existed that Mee was unduly persuaded to give the Legion her money and detailed how the Legion slowly took control of her finances as she became more deeply involved in the movement.

A church investigation determined that the Legion’s founder, the late Rev. Marcial Maciel, sexually molested seminarians and fathered three children. The Vatican took over the order in 2010 and Pope Benedict XVI ordered a wholesale reform.

Dauray’s lawyers have said that Mee was defrauded by an order whose leaders orchestrated an effort to hide its founder’s misdeeds from her aunt. Silverstein said in throwing out the lawsuit that some of what was before the court raised a red flag because Mee transferred millions to “clandestinely dubious religious leaders.”

In Wednesday’s filings, Dauray’s lawyers argue that Dauray is legally interested in Mee’s estate and that Mee’s most recent will was obtained by fraud and undue influence by the Legion.

Silverstein said in his opinion in part that Dauray disavowed her interest when she said during a deposition that she didn’t want anything for herself from Mee’s estate, but instead wanted it to go to charity. Wednesday’s filing argues that comment should not have been taken as Mee disavowing her interest.

The Legion must file a response with the court by early August. The order has not studied the filing yet but expects to prevail, said spokesman Jim Fair.

Chile's Pinera asks his bloc for unity amid crisis

Chile’s president is asking his conservative bloc to pick a single presidential candidate and quickly overcome a political crisis just four months before the general election.

President Sebastian Pinera said Thursday that his Alliance coalition must be united and rapidly replace candidate Pablo Longueira. The former economy minister quit the race Wednesday to deal with his depression.

Longueira’s resignation further weakened the chances that the conservative bloc will be able to beat former President Michelle Bachelet, the center-leftist who is the frontrunner in the Nov. 17 vote.

The current governing coalition led by the conservative Independent Democratic Union and the center-right National Renovation is the first conservative government since Chile’s return to democracy in 1990.
